Nearly every single modern computer utilizes cobalt, a mineral whose supply chain is so heavily dominated by slave labor that it's practically impossible to ethically source. Ignoring AI, it is even ethical to do digital art at all? The production of a drawing tablet is not a victimless crime.
I feel you when you want to reduce this to something as simple as a comparison. But bear with me (or alternatively, I put a tl;dr/conclusion at the end).
Much of capitalism is unethical - yes. I agree with this point completely. It's impossible to completely avoid unethical consumption in the world we live in. But it's good to be thoughtful of it and I think businesses and governments responsible for bad practice should be held accountable. Sadly I can't change the world on my own in any meaningful way, but i'll do my part where I can & vote people into power that care about this too.
Taking your comparison for a second, I feel like the art project of that OP was asking a much more direct "I bought cobalt I didn't need and then turned into a children's toy, could this be art?". And my reply was basically yeah sure it could be art, but was it worth it? My point is that I'm not sure on that last part, and leaning towards a 'no'. They specifically sourced it unethically and made that the center piece, which is distinct from the utilitarian nature of consumer electronics we need to get through our lives. Unethical sourcing of art can be a goal or statement (like here cw dead pets) but will then of course still be a part of it. I don't think ethics were considered for the post we're discussing though and it instead only discussed the very unproductive 'is it art' discourse. This, of course, matters about as much as my "dick" being objectively "long" or not.
Maybe getting a little sidetracked, but I also want to mention that cobalt is an extremely useful metal, whereas AI.. well.. i've mentioned the very human cost of mturk and the wholesale theft of the entire internet. There's also:
the power required
the jobs in art it threatens and therefore the skilled labor we stand to lose if we're not careful
the inevitable price hike and betrayal of the public as soon as alternatives are out competed (this will happen)
the risks of biases (racism, ableism, sexism) in an opaque weighted system like AI & the fact we cannot deal with this except for slapping some extra prompts in front
AI poisoning our actual collective knowledge with untrue shit. Recent cases in point being the hilarious fake mouse dick science being published and the ai generated inaccurate servals on google, but there's a lot more going on
the risks of companies and people in power using AI to more efficiently screw everybody over and hide behind 'machine told me so' accountability loopholes
the risks of AI being used in all sorts of malinformed use cases
But what are the gains? What do we stand to win? Call me cynical, but we already had an infinite amount of pictures at our fingertips, as well as all the mediocre writing you could ever want (but actually much better because someone loved writing it). I feel like all these general AI's are good for is filling the pockets of some very rich robber barons and grifters, as well as diluting everything that's beautiful and true in the world.
Quick sidenote - Some specialist AI have genuinely already improved the world, like with medical screenings, but even then it's hard to really call it a win because reverse engineering the reasoning of an AI is so fucking hard. And again, they're a slippery slope with insurance companies wanting a piece of that pie badly, just so they can apply their 'justified' penalties to people not even sick yet.
tl/dr; So in conclusion, no, I don't think your comparison holds up. I agree that it sucks that so much of necessary consumption is unethical in ways we can't easily fix as consumers. But one thing bad does not equate other thing good. If anything, it should inspire you to do better where you can make a difference and hold the ones responsible for the exploitation in this world accountable.
Don't let it eat you up though. I'm not even saying you can't use it for inspiration ever. But any art based on these generated pictures cannot be divorced from the ugly side we'd rather not see: the underpaid army of technically not slaves and the wholesale theft of everything.

I've been thinking a bit about my OCs since their all champions and what was that "it factor" for them that allowed them to claim to the title For Jack, it's surprisingly his work ethic. I say surprisingly because he is a royal and the majority of royals tend to have a silver spoon stuck in their mouths. He does have as well, but he manages to actually work on building his team and training them compared to say the likes of Sordward and Shieldbert. And feeding them curry so they have a strong bond with him. That also makes the whole turning his team into shadow Pokemon in a last-ditch effort to attempt to ensure his victory over Leon even more heartbreaking. Adding to that, Jack is easily one of the most ruthless of my Champion OCs...but he's in line with other older champions (think around Mustard and Alder's age, like Professor Oak) who were incredibly ruthless battlers. Then you have little miss Calla who is by far the most tenacious of my champion OCs. She has to be as a poison-type specialist in order to make up for the lack of offensive presence. It took her a lot of effort into crafting strategies and movesets to allow her poison types to shine and secure wins especially under the strict rules of the Galarian League challenge which meant she could only lose to any gym leader 3 times before automatically being kicked out. This also makes Calla one of the more outright strategic battlers in cactusverse especially in Galar which tends to focus a bit more offensive techniques. Valen is easily my most adaptable champion OC. His AI allows him to quickly scan the battle field, the various conditions and be able to come up with plans for his Pokemon. If a plan fails, no problem! He can come up with another one faster than the human mind can think. He's also incredibly friendly. Like generally my champion OCs all have good bonds with their Pokemon, but Valen takes it to like Red Levels of bonding if not higher. His ability to bond with wary legendaries like Mewtwo and Ultra Necrozma and calm down the various Ultra beasts gives him an absolute edge in battle as his Pokemon are willing to fight for him no matter what
Jabari, being a huge user of mega evolution and bond phenomenon also prioritizes high bonds with his Pokemon making them that much more in sync and allowing them tank hits and statuses they otherwise wouldn't out of affection for him. Jabari is also the most experimental of my champion OCs as he is willing to test out various strategies, moves, items, and gimmicks to see what works and what doesn't for his team. Marsha is easily my most daring of the champion OCs. Given that she's not afraid to punch the lights out of the likes of Lusamine and Rainbow Rocket Giovanni and Ghetsis it stands to reason that her daring attitude would transfer over to her battling style. While she is very calculated in battling she's not afraid to put it all on the line and at the highest levels of battling sometimes that's what it takes to secure the win. She also tends to be very opportunistic as she takes advantage of any statuses that may hinder her opponent. Cami is extremely resourceful and hardworking of the champion OCs. She's no battle prodigy by any means so she had to be willing to learn from others and take what she liked from them to make her own unique battle strategy. She wasn't afraid to take it slow, tackling the gyms and eventually the league in between her rigorous medical school classes. She's also probably the most cautious of my champion OCs owing to her medical background. Sometimes this has definitely worked against her in battle but many times it's worked in her favor as it allowed her to take advantage of her opponents who favored riskier strategies

Digital Narration from Apple Books
Apple just launched digital narration service using voice synthesis!
From the Forbes article:
The initial target: long-tail books that will never be worth paying a human narrator for.
“More and more book lovers are listening to audiobooks, yet only a fraction of books are converted to audio — leaving millions of titles unheard,” Apple says. “Many authors — especially independent authors and those associated with small publishers — aren’t able to create audiobooks due to the cost and complexity of production.”
Apple is releasing four voices to start, two female and two male. Voices are optimized for specific genres of books, so Jackson is intended for fiction or romance with a deep, somewhat husky voice, while Helen is a soprano designed for nonfiction and self-development.
If you click though to the Apple authors announcement you can hear samples of the 4 voices. They are in my opinion, extremely listenable.
Understandably, I've seen a lot of people railing against the move. People worried about putting voice actors / narrators out of work. Other commentators question listener fatigue and the sort of attention level that can be given to an AI generated voice over a long period. But also, good for small authors, the cost of producing and audio book (even if you do it yourself) is colossal. I think AI voiced long tail / self published books will be really popular.
I know people (Ross I'm looking at you) who use over cranked TTS voiceover voices to read PDFs and other non fiction to them in the car when they are driving around, this voices are much more natural and will be popular if *built in* to devices int he near future.
Growing up in the 90's AI / Computers speaking were supposed to sound like HAL, Marvin the Robot or Stephen Hawking.
Instead we got the the TikTok lady. Which had its own crazy 'ethics in AI model creation' story a few years ago.
I was thinking recently that the TikTok lady has - at this point - got to be the most famous voice in the western world? An order of magnitude more famous than any living person surely?
Also I'm still laughing about the 'Boiling my husband alive in oil 🥰' post I reblogged yesterday.
Anyways, I built my own voice model last year using the 10's of hours of podcast's I've recorded. I've been sneakily using it for replacement here and there in my new interview show. Unless you looked at my working files, no one will ever ever know. I wonder how many professional voice actors who narrate for a living also have their own custom models too?
Whats interesting to me about Apple's move is the 4 voices optimised for different kinds of genre out the gate?
The chirpy upward inflection of the TikTok lady voice is optimised to deliver meaning as clearly as possible inside the typographic container of TikTok's media environment.
Audiobook producers of course have been making casting decisions for years around content and narrator but it seems significant to me that right out the gate there are certain kinds of voices best suited for certain kinds of content?
Theres a big difference of course between hearing and listening (cf Pauline Oliveros, R. Murray Schafer, Deep Listening etc).
Comprehension is always an active process. The philosopher Mortimer J. Adler talks about how teaching and learning are a reciprocal process
“Just as teaching will not avail unless there is a reciprocal activity of being taught, so no author, regardless of his skill in writing, can achieve communication without a reciprocal skill on the part of readers.”
The same is also true of effective storytelling. There is the teller of stories and the person being told.
I want AI voice Narration to be turned up to 11 - tomorrow. The optimisation of Human-Like voices to deliver meaning I'm convinced could be pushed a lot further.
Why not create a Human-Like voice that is optimised to deliver meaning at 2/3x speeds?
What does a synthesised voice that reaches 'I know kung-fu' levels of comprehension to a willing and active listener even sound like?
At that level of speed and active comprehension do we need to tweak for realism or optimise for something else?

New wars, new weapons and the Geneva Conventions
In the wars in Ukraine and in the Middle East, new, autonomous weapons are being used. Our Inside Geneva podcast asks whether we’re losing the race to control them – and the artificial intelligence systems that run them.    “Autonomous weapons systems raise significant moral, ethical, and legal problems challenging human control over the use of force and handing over life-and-death decision-making to machines,” says Sai Bourothu, specialist in automated decision research with the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots.   How can we be sure an autonomous weapon will do what we humans originally intended? Who’s in control?  Jean-Marc Rickli from the Geneva Centre for Security Policy adds: “AI and machine learning basically lead to a situation where the machine is able to learn. And so now, if you talk to specialists, to scientists, they will tell you that it's a black box, we don't understand, it's very difficult to backtrack.”  Our listeners asked if an autonomous weapon could show empathy? Could it  differentiate between a fighter and a child? Last year, an experiment asked patients to rate chatbot doctors versus human doctors.  “Medical chatbots ranked much better in the quality. But they also asked them to rank empathy. And on the empathy dimension they also ranked better.
