Momoiro Clover started as a fairly standard jpop idol group back in 2008 (I've been following them since then, it has been a while lol). In the following years, one of their members decided to leave to pursue an acting career instead. They switched the group name to Momoiro Clover Z and all the videos took such a turn, it was quite the whiplash. And it was for the BEST, they're aliens in the idol world, including the fact that some members are pushing 30 now! Their style is mostly back to normal nowadays, but they've still produced gems

lee sangeun historical moment where she got the best new female artist prize in 1988 for dam dadi and she won with 55.5% of the votes.

the korean title of this video is "1988 lee sangeun - singing dam dadi wearing a dress" because this is the first time she ever wore a dress in any public appearance ever and it was a p big deal. this was a fancy end of year awards ceremony tho so they put her in a fancy dress and heels and it's so funny seeing her getting the award and handing it off to someone and getting the mic in time to start the song and the female backup dancers come in and they're all a full foot shorter than her. and her vocals r so gritty and boyish in this performance compared to her outfit it's rly so fun. her headscarf that's meant to hide how short her hair is slowly unravels throughout the performance and when it's over she just holds it onto her head and both sides of the fabric swing as she walks off the stage. she's so charming!

this chart is so crazy... lee jiyeon got 20.5%, yang sookyung got 14.1%, kim wansun got 3.4% and those are all super famous singers of the late 80s. lee sangeun was literally an overnight national pop star

Soribada ‘Flower Bookmark’ Interview (May 2014)

Welcome to Soribada! It’s your first time meeting Soribada members, please do a simple introduction of yourself.

IU: Hello, Soribada members. I’m IU and I’m back with my ‘Flower Bookmark’ album.

The concept of your newly released remake album ‘Flower Bookmark’ gives off a fresh and natural feeling while exuding analog emotions. The album cover concept seems to have been popular mainly in the 70s and 80s and I'm curious about the background behind how you decided on the concept.

IU: First of all, since it’s a remake album, I wanted to do both a new interpretation of the songs, as well as to capture the emotions back then at the same time. So there are parts here and there that preserve the emotions of those days. For the album cover too, I wanted to reflect the retro reeling back then, while showing a new interpretation of Kim Wan Sun sunbaenim’s hairstyle and fashion.

I think the faint, yet pure tone is enough to evoke nostalgia for the 70s and 80s and to create a sensation among young people. But there must have been challenges to satisfy older generations and younger people at the same time, so what did you use in order to connect seamlessly between them? (If you tried to resolve this issue?)

IU: The songs in this album are such classics that anyone can sing them. Even without having something in particular to connect the generations, there are emotions that young people will enjoy listening to. Since good songs will always be good, whoever listens to them, whenever you listen to them and when you listen to them again^^ In a way, the song itself seems to connect young people to the emotions of those days.

If we take a look at your previous albums, you have collaborated a lot with senior singers. In this remake album, senior singers even participated in the remake itself, so how did that happen? What do you gain from working with senior singers?

IU: When I told them that I chose my favorite songs and planned to do a remake of them, all the seniors happily agreed and from the moment I drew out my emotions until the completion of the song, I was able to learn a lot about the background behind writing the song and the emotions they felt at the time. It was also nice to hear those emotions (Note: from the songs) right in front of me. And even when I asked them to feature and work on the teaser with me, I was so thankful that they gladly came to the studio. The best part is that while working together with my seniors, I can listen to their stories. It's really not easy to listen to their stories in person. That helped me a lot and during that period, it allowed me to grow a lot. While working on this song, I was being hard on myself and also felt quite lost, but I gained a lot of strength from the seniors cheering me on and telling me ‘fighting’. Thank you very much for that.

You said you usually visit your Uaena (official fan cafe) at midnight because you are ‘lonely’, so what is IU's loneliness amplification device? (music or books that you listen to when you're lonely) Also, what kind of music makes you forget your loneliness?

IU: I don't know. Hehe my loneliness amplifier is just lying in bed and stoning? I think that kind of behavior amplifies my loneliness. As I’m thinking, I get to face myself and that makes me feel more lonely. Or the other way around, meeting someone can be an amplifier of loneliness too. The loneliness you feel when you're alone and the loneliness you feel when you're with others are different. I think the loneliness I feel when I meet someone feels much worse.. ^^

After your recent showcase in Hong Kong, you released photos and a video about ‘The Story Only I Didn’t Know’. You brought small happiness to your fans with the tiny details about the song, so how was it like meeting your Hong Kong fans? Are they different from your Korean fans? Do you have any plans to promote globally?

IU: It was really good.^^ Recently, I had no special events other than working on my music, so I was spending a break that wasn’t a break and I felt a lot of lonely emotions like in the previous question. During such a time, I had a fan meeting with my Hong Kong fans and I thought to myself, “I’m someone who is so loved like this. I shouldn't get tired♥”. The strength I received from their support was beyond my expectations and Hong Kong food suited my taste, so I refreshed my body and mind before I returned. I went to give joy to my fans, but on the contrary, I received healing instead. Since I meet Koreans often, they feel comfortable like my family and friends, whereas overseas fans cheer for me so enthusiastically (as I don’t get to meet them often in person) ^^ I don't have a specific plan for promoting globally yet, but for my fans who want to meet me, I'm always willing to go anywhere to see my fans in person, like at my Hong Kong fan meeting. I want to have more conversations when we meet, so I am studying languages a lot these days.

You debuted at a young age and have already entered your 7th year. Perhaps that's why, in the lyrics of "Ice Flower," which drew attention for your collaboration with figure skating queen Kim Yuna, it goes “If you look back and see all those footprints, you'll see how far we've come. That's enough. I'm doing well because it's my life and it's my way.” I think you must feel that keenly and more deeply. What does being a ‘singer’ mean to you, as a singer in your 7th year since your debut?

IU: I don't know...^^ I think this is a very difficult question. I'm still a rookie to be able to give an answer. Now IU has become another persona of mine which is as familiar as my real name ‘Lee Ji-eun’ and compared to 7 years ago, I’ve gotten a lot closer to those who love the name IU. I've become more confident and responsible myself too, actually that has relieved the burden from my shoulders. In the past, I used to think that burden and responsibility were the same thing, but now I’ve come to realize bit by bit that they are different. So without burden and purely with responsibility and a healthy energy, I’m trying my best to sing happily because I want to present a nice voice to those who love me, IU.

What does ‘flower’ mean to you and why?

IU: How should I put it? It's hard to express. There's no particular word or phrase that comes to mind ...^^ I think it's 'oblivion' (Note: the condition of not remembering). The reason being that everytime you look at a flower, it's still as pretty as the first time you saw it. Obviously they are the same flowers you saw last spring, yet the flowers this year still leave you in awe as if you're seeing them for the first time. And when this flower withers, it falls to the ground in a mess. Knowing that people will trample on it, it feigns ignorance and in that moment, I think to myself, wow it's really pretty and fall in love with it, so that's why the word 'oblivion' comes to mind.

(Note: A uaena asked the 29-year-old IU who produced the album LILAC whether the significance of ‘flower’ to her has changed since the time she answered the question at 22 years old.

IU: Flowers are strong. Even if they bloom somewhere that would go unnoticed, they have their own values. Their tenacity to bloom in time every year is beautiful.)

[ARTICLE] Lay Zhang Signs With Range MEdia (EXCLUSIVE)

Range Media Partners has signed Chinese actor, singer-songwriter, dancer and fashion icon Lay Zhang and will represent him globally across all areas.

The 31-year-old star, who operates under multiple pseudonyms including Lay and Little Sheep, rose to fame as a former member of K-Pop boyband EXO before launching a solo career, already is a household name in Asia, boasting more than 80 million followers across social media.

As an actor, he stars under his full name Zhang Yixing in the Chinese box office smash “No More Bets,” which has earned more than $527 million in China to date, becoming the country’s biggest hit of the summer. Zhang is now the youngest and fifth-ever Chinese actor to reach this box office milestone. “No More Bets” also received a limited release in the U.S. on Sept. 1.

Next year, he will be seen starring opposite Jackie Chan in the film “A Legend.” His other film credits include films “The Island” and “Kung Fu Yoga,” and he has also appeared on the TV series “Go Fighting!” and “Idol Producer,” serving as a judge and host on the latter.

Since his rise as a core member of EXO, he embarked on a solo career, with his debut EP “Lose Control” hitting No. 4 on Billboard’s U.S. World Albums chart. He is the first Chinese solo artist to hit the Top 25 on the Billboard 200 and the first Chinese solo artist to hit Top 5 on the Worldwide iTunes Album Chart.

In August, Zhang’s “Grand Line Tour” concerts in Shenzhen and Beijing immediately sold out, with more than 30,000 tickets purchased within seconds of going on pre-sale, leading to additional concerts being added in Shanghai, Nanjing and Chongqing.

As a global brand ambassador, Zhang is currently working with Hublot, Sprite, Fila and Bang & Olufsen. He was Calvin Klein’s first Chinese global spokesperson for their underwear and jean lines and the first Valentino, Converse, Perrier, MAC and Daniel Wellington spokesperson in China.

“Lay Zhang is exactly the type of artist Range was built for. He’s a true multihyphenate with global appeal,” said Range Music managing partner Cory Litwin and Range co-founder and CEO Peter Micelli in a joint statement. “With the recent breakthrough success of his latest film, ‘No More Bets,’ his presence onscreen shows big box office potential.”

Zhang, who is fluent in Mandarin, Korean and English, joins a Range Music roster that has made impressive strides since its inception two years ago. The division launched its own label in partnership with Capitol Music Group and Virgin Music & Artist Label Services and represents a wide range of talent including Jack Harlow, Saweetie, Justin Tranter, Cordae, Midland, Murda Beatz and Nicky Romero. The division earned seven Grammy nominations this year, with Nova Wav nabbing two awards for its production and songwriting work on Beyonce’s “Renaissance.”

Thank you for your posts about the Billboard article. I hadn't seen it and I find the whole Billboard conversation fascinating (albeit frustrating at times).

I thought the NYTimes had a much more nuanced and less judgmental take on the whole Billboard thing, talking about how country music stars including the “Rich Men North of Richmond” singer and Jason Aldean have recently benefitted from tactics perfected by Taylor Swift and BTS fans to rule the charts -- especially the use of digital downloads. (Quote below because I couldn't link to the article)

"[T]here was a more targeted digital savviness at play, too. Much of the consumer activity that drove the track to No. 1 came via 99-cent digital downloads from outlets like the iTunes Store — an outdated format that is declining in popularity faster than CDs.

Despite streaming now accounting for more than 80 percent of music consumption overall, paid downloads are weighted more on the charts, a quirk exploited regularly by pop superfans devoted to acts like Ms. Swift or the South Korean group BTS. In often coordinated efforts, they use downloads to show support and earn chart milestones that are celebrated like wins in sports or political elections."

I feel like Billboard is just unhappy that they're being outsmarted by fans and instead of trying to figure out a way to truly determine which songs are most popular (whatever that even means anymore), they're just trying to blame it on Jimin and BTS. What else is new?

I agree. Until fans began directly impacting the charts more, Billboard was fairly comfortable with music labels, streaming platforms, promoters, and other industry middlemen being the sole arbiters of what’s deemed popular and profitable. But now that fandoms are able to show that the artists they support (and with k-pop these artists are increasingly non-white and non-American), have enough demand to show up in the top 10 - an achievement historically relegated only to artists with the influence of the middlemen who always got their cut, Billboard is now in a tough spot having to explain to those industry middlemen and labels why their usual tactics no longer guarantee their artists the top spots. By making a scapegoat of non-American artists and fandoms using the same tools that white, American fandom-supported artists like Taylor Swift continue to rely on in broad daylight, they successfully redirect the blame, when all Billboard really has to do is revamp their charting paradigm completely to account for active and real demand as it’s shown in the 21st century / digital economy. It’s just easier to tap into good ol American prejudices about Asian artists, “rabid blue-haired 14 year old girls”, “Chinese femboys”, “easy to manipulate and bait female dominated fandoms”, etc. Like, the ending conclusion of the Billboard article was that Western labels should lean more into merch and building/leveraging active fan communities to spend more money lmao. Compare that to the NYTimes article that more comprehensively showed the landscape of music charting year to date, pointing out how American conservative politicians have moved their front in the culture war to music charts, pushing racist country artists to the top of the charts with tools Taylor Swift, k-pop fandoms, and other American and Latino/x artists already use.

Everybody knows exactly what the Billboard article was, because every year since 2019, we’ve gotten an article almost exactly like that one. It’s just this time, they were less shy about naming names and had an easy time painting a compelling picture given the evidence from Jimin fanbases and funding they easily linked to, to justify deleting all his D2C sales forever from charting considerations. Since ARMYs / BTS are the non-American pioneers on those charts we’re certified persona non grata lmao. In fact, going by the end conclusion of the Billboard article, I won’t be surprised if considerations for other k-pop groups are pushed this year at various awards, instead of for Jimin, or even any artists related to HYBE since they had no issue naming NewJeans. It would give them the engagement and then some, while neutralizing some of the worst criticism of their prejudices that we’re all seeing play out.

Like I said, it’s a gutter job. But one that’s unfortunately par for the course. This won’t stop BTS, Jimin, or the fandom. Not one bit.
