StackedNatural Day 59: 7x09, 10x06, 11x07
StackedNatural Masterpost: [x]
November 18, 2021
7x09: How to Win Friends and Influence Monsters
Written by: Ben Edlund
Directed by: Guy Bee
Original air date: November 18, 2011
Plot Synopsis:
Something is turning all of the people of a small town in New Jersey into cannibals.
Features:
Glamping, the Jersey Devil, Ranger Rick, supercharged adrenal glands, Dean’s drug sandwich, Edgar the leviathan, hyperadrenalised cannibalism, Bobby is kidnapped by leviathans.
My Thoughts:
I fully forgot that Bobby dies in season 7. Not looking forward to watching the next season 7 ep, at least we get a couple week’s break.
In good news, Bobby looks very cute in a little suit and all dressed up. I love him.
This is kind of a boring episode but at least Dean gets microaggressed and has a little crush on Ranger Rick. I stand by this, he said he liked Rick when he was stoned and thus not repressing. No filters, love and light. Also, textual evidence that he’s been sadder since Cas left. And then Bobby gives the least useful pep talk I’ve ever seen.
There are plenty of issues with the leviathans as villains, but the actor for Dick Roman really nails the delivery of charming but sleazy CEO in a big way.
Notable Lines:
“You think the world wants to end?”
“ Dad had a case, he'd just dump us on you."
“Ever since my head broke... and we lost Cas. I mean, you ever feel like he's -- he's going through the same motions but he's not the same Dean, you know?"
“...at least all my crazy's under one umbrella, you know? I kind of know what I'm dealing with. A lot of people got it worse."
" I'm talking the way a person talks when they've had it, when they can't figure out why they used to think all this mattered."
"You're not a person. [...] You tried to hang it up and be a person with Lisa and Ben. And now here you are with a mean old coot and a van full of guns. That ain't person behavior, son. You're a hunter, meaning you're whatever the job you're doing today. Now, you get a case of the Anne Sextons, something's gonna come up behind you and rip your fool head off. Now, you find your reasons to get back in the game. I don't care if it's love or spite or a ten-dollar bet. I've been to enough funerals. I mean it. You die before me, and I'll kill you."
Laura’s (completely subjective) Episode Rating: 6.0
IMdB Rating: 8.5
10x06: Ask Jeeves
Written by: Eric Charmelo & Nicole Snyder
Directed by: John MacCarthy
Original air date: November 18, 2014
Plot Synopsis:
Dean encounters a surprising message on Bobby's phone, and Sam and Dean investigate.
Features:
Dead heiress, the boys as Bobby’s next of kin, shapeshifter kid, basically Clue.
My Thoughts:
I don’t remember this episode at all and you know what? That was fine. They’re trying for camp, fair enough, but none of the guest stars are talented enough to pull it off, and neither is Jared.
The bottle episode style doesn’t really work with the established rules of the universe - there’s no way one of the boys wouldn’t have been able to distract the one or two cops long enough for the other to sneak out and at least get the EMF meter from the car. For that matter, they’ve handled enough silver for werewolves and shifters that I don’t buy them not noticing that the knives are stainless steal. And they’ve handled enough cursed objects to not instantly dismiss an ornate piece of jewellery left to Bobby, famously a monster hunter, by a mysterious heiress. It just hits weird that they take everything at face value. Also, crazy that the cop didn’t run their real names that they used and come up with the serial killer stuff.
I watched this episode with my best friend from high school, Bella (who no longer watches Spn), and my brother-in-law, Lyall, who watches with us a lot but doesn’t have the bug.
Bella hated this so much that they convinced me to give it an even lower rating than I was already going to give it.
Lyall said “this show loves camp but hates gay people” and “I’ve never watched an episode of Supernatural that made me forget about the overarching plot more”.
All true and reasonable critiques. I think Sam should have hustled the MILFs at poker instead of playing Go Fish and I thought it was funny when he held his knife like a gun. Also, the shifter effects looked way better and creepier in season 1, so call that a failure.
Basically, this was a good idea executed very badly, which to be fair is trademark Supernatural. Also, with this and 7x09, Stacked today said that Capitalism Is Bad.
Notable Lines:
“Our surrogate dad, Bobby Singer...”
“Being a monster is a choice.”
Laura’s (completely subjective) Episode Rating: 3.5
IMdB Rating: 8.1
11x07: Plush
Written by: Eric Charmelo & Nicole Snyder
Directed by: Tim Andrew
Original air date: November 18, 2015
Plot Synopsis:
Sheriff Donna calls Sam and Dean for help after a horrific murder with supernatural elements happens in her town. Sam continues to have visions and asks God for help, which frustrates Dean.
Features:
Killer bunny, the return of Donna, cursed mask, evil jester, cursed costumes of a children’s performer, burn the furry heads, Donna is a hunter.
My Thoughts:
I was expecting this to be a rare late-season Samgirl episode, but it wasn’t really because it dropped all of the emotional resonance for the bulk of the episode and tried to just sandwich it in there at the beginning and the end. Not much exploration of what Sam is really going through.
This one also felt super divorced from the overarching plot of the season, which makes sense because it was written by the same duo. I’ll have to see if this is a valid critique of all their work when I do my analysis at the end of Stacked.
I love Donna and I enjoyed watching Dean compete (and lose) at masculinity with a high schooler. I liked seeing a little bit of Sam’s hell trauma come in near the end.
Otherwise, I was mostly bored. And mad that they named the heroic jock after Brad Buckner and it wasn’t even a Buckleming episode.
To be honest, I watched these episodes in advance and am writing this review the next day (life 14ish hours later) and I can’t remember that much about the episode except that Donna was cute, so. Shows you what I felt about it when watching.
Notable Lines:
“I spent my whole life sticking up for my brother. But what if I couldn’t see him for what he really was?”
Laura’s (completely subjective) Episode Rating: 4.5
IMdB Rating: 8.2
In Conclusion: Why did I watch these episodes in advance, you ask? Why, because I am working for 14 hours straight today <3
