Who knew. ..  who knew... As of April 2nd, 2018, Edmonton has our own little version of Paris Baguette ( x Tous Les Jours)!!! 

First off, Paris Baguette & Tous Les Jours are (2 of the many) South Korean bakery/café franchises- there’s locations across the globe now but unfortunately, none in Edmonton. A few weeks ago, I was gifted some goods from Christina for my birthday: a box of customized bakery products from this place, Jun’s Bakery. & immediately, I was like. .. this looks so Korean! I don’t know how to explain it; the packaging style is unlike western bakeries. For those who have been to bakery/café franchises in Korea or just cafes &/or bakeries in Korea, you can relate, right? 

Anyway, here we are~ Jun’s Bakery. It’s inconveniently located in a south side development area, where there’s literally nothing around it. It’s situated in a small/short strip mall that doesn’t have all the spaces occupied yet =/

Inside. There’s a small bench seating table facing the window, where you get a lovely view of the strip mal parking lot haha there’s like 5 chairs, so relly, no place for dine-in. 

The store is quite small, consisting of a middle display table, & 2 shelving units on either side of the store. The smell of the shop is . .. I don’t know how to explain it once again. It’s not the Asian bakery smell, nor is it the western bakery smell. It’s just unique! 

Let’s take a look at some of their products :)

Pre-packaged gift boxes. You can also pick your items & ask for a gift box (at no extra charge). They do an excellent job at fitting your order in (into a box of suitable size) bcos their products are already in plastic boxes of the same size already. 

They have some teas & honey, as well as candies. On this shelf, there’s tea, meringues, & 6inch diameter cookies.

Not truly an open kitchen concept but you can clearly see all the action that places in their kitchen. Things are very neat & clean. 

They have an assortment of cakes as well. They are pricey though; sitting at $40/cake. 

Their middle display table has all sorts of breads/buns & a handful of tarts. Just to name a few, they have mocha cake, organic green tea tart, brownie bar, onion bread, almond squares, almond & sesame snaps. .. mung bean bread, etc. The variety is unlike other bakeries I’ve been to in Edmonton. What I can say (as a general statement) is that it’s very similar to the types of items you see in Korean franchises. I don’t like to use the word “fusion” & apply it to baked goods; & I feel like it’s not very appropriate here either. But it’s what you’d find in Korea, locally. 

On the other shelving unit, cookies are the main type of product (there’s 1 type of scone in bottom left & 2-3 buns). 

*Note: I’ve tried several items from here, & so far, my fav has been the German vanilla crescent cookie (located at top left corner of photo). A box of those is $10. 

A small selection of loaves of breads are available too. 

You have nooooooo idea how happy I was to visit this place. I really miss the coffeeshop scene in Seoul. .. 

Tbh, I do find they are overpriced, but you’re paying for uniqueness of their goods. Their flavours are very mild, not too sweet, & doesn’t have that buttery or yeast-iness which I really don’t prefer. I’m not much as of a sweet-tooth so I find their stuff very suited to my personal taste.

2018 Year In Review

Another year, another review 💕(I actually typed most of this up before 2019 and then got distracted, whoops)

To put things short, 2018 has been AWESOME :D Exhausting and fast, but awesome.

I started it off pretty uncertain how things were going to go, dreading it would be a repeat of 2017′s boring TAFE courses and endless job rejections. But the miracle happened - a 2D animation studio opened up near me, I applied, did an animation test and got the job!

The job was a contract from 1st of April - 21st of December, so I spent the majority of my year going to work to animate characters for a really crazy but hilarious new kids show called Spongo Fuzz and Jalapena, due to air mid 2019 :) 

It was honestly the most fun job I have ever had and I can’t wait for the next project! 🎉 I have never been this exhausted in my life, though. 😅I had already booked a whole bunch of conventions before I got the job, and didn’t want to cancel them so I was working nonstop - Animation during the day and intensive convention prep every night. 

I also had the bright idea of creating a full colour 26 page comic -with a tight deadline - so I was madly working to the point I didn’t even have time for dinner half the time :’) I am sort of happy with the comic, but also kind of wish I never had the idea in the first place. 😅

I tabled at a ton of conventions; Melbourne Supanova, Central Coast ComiCon, Other Worlds Zine Fair, Sydney Supanova, SMASH and Canberra Gamma Con. If next year doesn’t go so well on the job side of things I’m hoping to add a few more conventions to that list - Brisbane Supanova, Oz Comic Con and Animaga to name a few. I’ve already booked Sydney Madman Anime Festival!

2018 was the year my partner and I celebrated our 4th year together, and he never fails to amaze me with his continuous love and support. I was too sick to attend the first day of SMASH, so he set up and ran the whole stall for me while I stayed at home. Same with Sydney Supanova, I was too bogged down in animation work and couldn’t afford to take the Friday off, so he set up and ran the stall for me on Friday, then we ran the stall together on the weekend. He also tended to my every need when I broke my toe, cooked all my meals when I was busy with work and even packaged + posted all my Etsy orders every day because I was always working during post office hours. He listened to all the problems I was having with my stall setup and helped make shelves and decorations to make it look and function better. I was getting stressed because my desk space was too small, BAM he bought me a brand new desk with plenty of storage. I was getting stressed that I had so much on my convention to-do-list and couldn’t keep track of all my project ideas, BAM, he sets up a whiteboard and helps me brainstorm everything so I can keep track of all my thoughts and ideas and what to prioritise for future conventions. I didn’t even ask him to do any of this, he just loves to help me and make me happy and I am forever blissed and happy to be able to spend my life with such a wonderful human!

Arsty Highlilghts / accomplishments:

🌸I designed 9 cute Houseki no Kuni acrylic charms which have been doing really well at conventions!

🌸I also drew a cute series of ‘Sleepy Gem’ Houseki no Kuni / Steven Universe holographic prints, which I’m quite proud of 😊

🌸I created my 2nd enamel pin design, which already needed 2 reorders because they were so popular! ;w; I never knew I could make something that so many people love *sob* I’ve already planned to make these into a series! (already designed some deer ones, and thinking of doing foxes next ^_^ )

🌸I also tried getting gold foil prints done for the first time, which was pretty cool! I got the american sizes mixed up though so I might try for the bigger size next time :) (grainy photo cause its a screenshot from a video)

🌸I’ve been taking steps to make my stall look more ‘professional’, and got a really neat wooden sign made for me by my friend as_sweet_as_jasmine!

🌸I’ve started revamping my favourite series of posters - the Eevee Gijinka girls :) I plan to have them all done and ready for 2019s conventions! 

🌸This was the year I got an iPad, so I could do digital art on-the-go. Honestly its helped me so much, and I can’t wait to be able to use it more (sorta didn’t get a chance to touch it while i was working!)

🌸I got Copic Markers for my birthday so I had a whole new medium to play with! These mixed with using a brush pen for inking really make my inktobers pop and I’m eager to draw more with them  :) 

🌸Speaking of Inktober, it was a huge accomplishment for me to put effort into a decent artwork every day this year! Usually theres a few dud ones when I lacked inspiration, but I somehow managed to make it work ;w; So when it came time to printing the books, theres 31 illustrations rather than 25 like the others :) Also the whole rainbow theme idea came from how cool I think it would look flipping through a rainbow book - so I managed to make that happen and couldn’t be happier!

🌸I passed 1000 sales on Etsy!! 😱As well as 1000 followers on instagram! Crazy right??

General 2018 highlights

🌸2018 was the year one of my best friends got married! I made cute little clay wedding cake toppers for her :)

🌸The year Owl City’s 7th album Cinematic came out!! All the tracks are so GOOD and exactly the sound all us hootowls were longing for. Also Be Brave is a tearjerker, in a good way. What an amazing human Abbey is to Adam <3 

🌸The year Spyro Reignited Trilogy came out!! It’s absolutely amazing, and I love every second of it. Every time I play it I just can’t help but stand there looking around at every detail because everything is just so gorgeous *_* And the nostalgia is so real.

🌸Not exactly a highlight but the year Tumblr went NSFW free, and lost hundreds of thousands of users 😂I’m still here though. Got a dumb tradition to keep up ya know.

🌸The year I tried doing Halloween for the first time - I bought a bunch of lollies and chocolates and decorations on my letterbox/door to let people know I was participating. I got 2 different groups of people at the door, 5 people all up 😂More than I expected tbh!

🌸I tried Ruby chocolate for the first time! It was ok .. just kinda tasted like berry yoghurt flavoured white chocolate though ;w; 

SO! What’s coming for 2019?

I’m not really sure at the moment, but I have high hopes for Cheeky Little Studios (the animation company I worked for) - so I guess I’ll just have to wait and see if any of their next projects get concrete start dates :) I’m not as terrified of the year as I usually am when its just one big question mark. I know I can make decent money through conventions and commissions in the meant time so I’ll just continue doing what I love!

Describe the last (or current) object you sat on. It’s my black work chair. It was initially a quick, last-minute purchase from when I started an internship with my now-employer just so that I had somewhere decent to sit on when I reported to work, so it’s quite cheap and not the most comfortable to sit on for 8–12 hours; I definitely need a much nicer chair that would help with my posture.

What was your favourite toy when you were a kid? I liked any toy that was interactive or had a lot of features that I could explore, so that said I liked toys like cash registers that had a lot of buttons or super detailed dollhouses.

What weird thing do you eat that most people dislike? Balut. Which isn’t weird in my culture, but I’ve seen enough people gag over it.

Would you change your name if you got married? Depends; I don’t seem to have a firm opinion about it. I was set on hyphenating my name with my ex, but my mind could always change should I ever get another partner in the future.

Were you in any clubs in high school? Which ones? Yeah, but this is also because it was required. I joined the table tennis and yearbook clubs.

What time do you generally wake up? 6:30 AM on the dot, no alarms. Sometimes I’ll roll back to sleep, other times I’ll already start trying to wake up properly just so I don’t feel like a zombie once I start my 9 AM shift.

Do you share a bathroom with anyone? Yeah, everyone in my family uses the upstairs bathroom.

Are there any songs you know every single lyric to? Paramore’s entire discography and most of Beyoncé’s songs. A few punk rock songs here and there.

How many amusement parks have you visited? Not a lot. I can think of four unique ones I’ve been to.

Who is your favourite character from the show Friends? Chandler, followed very closely by Monica. Then Rachel, then Ross, then Joey, then Phoebe.

Do you have any leftovers in your fridge right now? So many. I ultimately bought too much food for my birthday dinner, considering we’re only 5 in the household – two trays of takoyaki, two party-sized pizzas, two trays of tteokbokki, two orders of gimbap, one family-sized tray of paella; and then we also have three large cakes (one of them I bought, one that my manager got, and one from my parents). But given this was my 2nd pandemic birthday, my 1st birthday employed, and my 1st birthday without Gabie, I wanted to have a big and memorable celebration for it.

What was the last job interview you attended? The one I had for what is my job now. It happened via video call, though.

Have you ever had a panic attack? A few, but fortunately the last one had been more than a couple of years ago.

Where do you keep most of your clothes? In my closet.

What's your favourite kind of frosting? Any kind of chocolate frosting is good with me.

Who is the most annoying celebrity in your opinion? I’m not feeling that way towards any celebrity in particular at the moment.

Do you prefer watching movies or TV shows? When it comes down to it, movies. I’d rather be able to digest an entire story within two hours than wait for a week for a new episode, and a year or two for a new season.

What decorations do you have in your bedroom? I have some photos of V up on my corkboard, and wall decors of Audrey Hepburn on my wall. I’m planning to spruce up my room soon though, and I’m thinking of already putting up floating wooden shelves or something of the sort up on my walls to make my K-pop ~shrine~ look extra pretty. I already ordered a shit-ton of merch that’s supposed to arrive from Korea by May or June, and I want them to have a home by then.

What was the last notification you got on your phone? It was an update to a buy-and-sell chat group I’m part of on Messenger.

What career or study were you really interested in but didn't pursue? Political science/law.

Where do you buy most of your groceries? My parents split up the groceries depending on where they can get a particular item for much cheaper, since the prices differ per store. I know they alternate among SM, Robinsons, and a local grocery we have near our village.

Have you ever taken a painting class? I don’t think so, but that would sound lovely to take.

Is there a store or restaurant where you're considered a regular? The folks at Omakase probably already know me since I usually get my tuna salad and sushi from them on Friday nights.

How far do you have to travel from home to get to school or work? On the two times I was able to drive to work, it only took around 20-30 minutes. When I was still in school, the duration definitely depended on how heavy the traffic was that day; it ranged between 20 minutes to 2.5 hours.

Did you use Vine back when it still existed? Regularly. I’m still they shut down :( TikTok is great too, but it’ll never be the same.

Are you more creative or analytical? Analytical.

How do you like your eggs? I just want the yolk to be runny. I wouldn’t touch a crisp egg with a solid yolk. As for omelettes, I prefer mine with cheese, bell peppers, and bits of ham.

How old were you when you started wearing a bra, if ever? Around 10 or 11.

What was the last video game you played? I think it may have been The Sims 4, a couple of years ago.

Are there any recipes you really want to try? I’d love to try baking my own macarons, but I know I should probably start with something a lot simpler.

Has anyone asked how you feel today? Kinda. Andi and I had a conversation at around 2 AM today and we took a few minutes to ask each other how we’ve been doing.

Well, how do you feel today? Cranky because of the weather; but otherwise, I’ve been feeling pretty content.

Have you ever received a speeding fine? No. I don’t think we get fined for that here. We do have speed limits especially on expressways, but people break that allllllllllll the time and I have never seen someone get stopped.

What's your favourite cookie? Chocolate chip cookie.

Do you have a doorbell at your house? Yups.

What percentage charge is your phone on right now? 1%, which is why I haven’t been touching it hahaha.

Beware before you read this fan account! -My English is not great. I’ll do my best but there is a possibility of miss-translation. -I recorded the whole event but the quality is not good. I'll definitely reference it but there could be some errors anyway. -This is not a translation of other fan account. Just credit me. -Since it's super long, I decided to divide to 2 or 3 parts. 1. Before entrance Fan meeting was held at Olympic Hall in Seoul, 7:00 pm 2017.08.05. I arrived there around 11:00 am to buy official goods. (twitter.com/itn..686400121413632) I left the venue after buying goods, so I couldn't see it but SNSD members came out later for filming Entertainment Report. I entered the venue around 6:30 pm, and audiences received pink lightstick, and photo cards which contain Girls' greetings for 10th anniversary. 2. First Stage: Holiday Fan meeting started around 7:10 pm. Lights turned off, then Holiday teaser was shown on the screen. After that, girls appeared from the upper side of the stage. Lights on, intro of Holiday was played, and girls walked down to the lower side, lined up for the performance. And with the music, they performed Holiday in front of the fans for the first time. I love Holiday already, but hearing it with choreo made me love it even more. That 360 degree rotating part (you can see it in the MV) is quite cool even on stage. Girls all wore slightly different outfits, but all of them had 'gg' mark on the left chest. 3. Second Stage: Party After first stage is over, 2nd stage 'Party' was immediately followed. in early march, i did my belated 2017 recap post, mostly (no, let’s be honest: entirely) for my own edification, but then i kept forgetting to post it on here because i live in a house without wifi and when i do have wifi i don’t have my laptop, but i spent the weekend housesitting and so i’ve been aimlessly on my laptop for an hour and i just remembered, oh, hey, that thing! i should do that thing. 

so. anyway. 2017:

from 2013 to 2016, i ended each year (or started the new one) with a recap post in some form. there were years where i didn’t feel much like doing it, but i always felt like the act of forcing myself to sit down and reflect, or at the very least remember and record, would be a useful one, if not in the present moment then certainly later. and it’s already proven true: every so often, bored and scrolling my own tumblr to try and see what it tells me about myself, i stumble upon these yearly recaps and remember something about the year that i had forgotten. sometimes it’s a specific event. other times it’s a feeling or something as specific as a food. and on a few occasions it’s been particularly delightful to see a self who has no idea what’s to come -- in 2013, for example, i visited d.c. with a friend. we spent hours walking around the supreme court building, hoping to spot a justice, to no avail -- until the moment we left, at which point we saw clarence thomas from a distance, and mainly just the back of his head. and it was thrilling.

so for all these reasons, i wanted, or felt that i should want, to write a brief post recapping my 2017, in words or in photos or in memes, watercolors, you name it. and i never did. and since the new year began, every week or so, i’ve thought to myself, well, hey, this one in particular is kind of an arbitrary deadline, you should still do a lil recap. and i’ve also spent a few evenings reading the super-old entries of bloggers i’ve followed for a few years - not even people i know well personally! - because watching people learn and grow online, if that’s how they should choose to do it, can be fun.

(is this a healthy framing? i don’t think i’m wrong, but i could probably stand to be more generous to myself, except that i don’t want to be generous, i want to have the willpower of teddy roosevelt, he who cured his own asthma basically through sheer force of will, absent all of the historic toxicity and baggage with which he must also be inextricably associated? except i also know better than to frame recovery/health narratives as a matter of willpower?) i’ve lost the thread completely at this point, assuming i was ever holding a thread in the first place?

anyway. here’s some free association about 2017, the year i keep accidentally thinking it is, after reminding myself that it is not 2016, which is the year in my heart that i believe it to be.

i. the beginning of 2017 feels like it was a hundred thousand years ago, and at this point last year i had no idea that i’d be in alaska and out of my old field completely, and at this point this year everything that happened to me in the first half of the last one feels like a dream.

when i think about the months of january through may, i remember the weeks on end where each day i woke up and felt a void in the center of my stomach where normally the feelings that motivate me go. i had a hard time with basic self-care. on more days than i am comfortable admitting, i would go home at the end of a workday where i’d achieved nothing, sit on the couch in my living room, surf the internet until i fell asleep, and then wake up, only to do it all again. i felt empty and blank, and underneath those thick layers of emptiness and blankness i felt the licking flames of self-hatred and terror, and so there i would sit, watching the hours go by, on my couch.

sometimes i saw my friend nathalia, and we would laugh, and that would take some of the edge off of the tension that was winding its way around my stomach and my throat.

(eventually, i saw a psychiatrist, and started treatment - and medication, which, by the way, please talk to me if you’re reading this and feel some weird internal resistance to taking medication for mental health issues, because i get it and i’ve been there, and your feelings are valid, but oh my god it was absolutely the right decision to start taking medication and i will gladly tell anyone why - but the point is that eventually, i broke down, and my dad got me into an appointment. i have never felt more exhausted than when i was trying to navigate health insurance and the mental healthcare system in this country while mired in a particularly vicious period of anxiety and depression. and yet: i could afford it. and yet: i had a parent to call, who had the time and energy and means to help, who had a friend in D.C. who made a recommendation, who was able to get me an appointment two weeks after i finally broke down to another person on the phone. i cannot imagine how i would’ve gotten through the past year without the many, immense privileges and outside support systems that i so often take for granted. i’m fighting with my own brain every day, still, and yet i am still luckier than i will ever know.)

i can still picture my short walk from the metro stop nearest my office to the building where i worked. my stomach sunk every day.

but there were some good days, too, where i didn’t have to go to the office, or even worse, the capitol, and instead got to go to my favorite building in the city, and do something i knew i was good at. they don’t let you keep the tickets you get when you’re admitted to the supreme court as a member of the press corps, because you have to turn them back in to the security guard once you’re seated, but after my first visit i tried to remember to take pictures. i knew what i was doing, and i felt like it mattered. i got some work linked by a website i admire. on at least one occasion, i wrote a story that included the voice of a source none of the national reporters on the case had chosen to include, and it was an important voice, and i felt pride in the story and in myself. in february, rupsha came and visited me and the rest of her friends on her birthday, and mollie flew into town for the celebration. we got day drunk at a local bar, and successfully begged off a slice of birthday cake from the strangers who were celebrating their own camaraderie at a different table. i found a framing co-op near my neighborhood, and it felt very adult to know how to get to the place where i could get nice things framed. nathalia and i fell in love with an exhibit at the hirschorn about ragnar kjartansson, so we went twice and stayed for hours, and both times it mattered less that i’d spent so many nights and weekends unable to muster the willpower or even desire to leave my apartment, to explore the city where i lived. sometimes, often, i felt afraid. i never went to the monuments at night. the first five months of 2017 proceeded apace.

another shiny moment in the muck: i spent new year’s eve and new year’s day in brooklyn, first at a neighborhood bar and later on a rooftop and eventually in my best friend’s apartment. i made nathalia laugh so hard with a joke about potatoes that she snorted champaign out of her nose. i slept in a tent set up on the kitchen floor, and did almost nothing, but very happily. we had a spontaneous bachelorette lunch at the MoMA.  i spent the night of january 2nd curled up on a tiny loveseat in a tiny apartment, with my college roommate and her boyfriend, and the next day i borrowed a blue dress, and the three of us took the bus to city hall and bought flowers on the way, and then we helped another of our old roommates get married. i could write about my memories of this day for a very long time. it was easily one of my happiest memories of the year. after the vows, we went and ate italian food in a near-empty restaurant. after we parted ways, i went to books of wonder, made my way to the bus that would take me back to dupont circle, and read a book bobby gave me for graduation, and cried and cried and cried.

later in january i covered the protest beat at the inauguration, and watched about 50 reporters swarm a single burning trash can, and later one single burning car. i wondered how many other cars were burning in the city for reasons less obviously political. speaking of, i read this poem about four billion times. the things that bothered me at the end of 2016, including but not limited to the privilege of perceived neutrality, continued to bother me well into the new year. they bother me still. on the day in the present that i am writing this, it is international [working] women’s day, according to whoever decides these things.

also in january: after five reporters covered every conceivable angle of the inauguration, i was sent alone to cover the women’s march. i made the front page and i thought the print headline was weird and off-putting. i don’t think back on any part of january with fondness, except for the part where i saw a drunken astronaut give an amazingly concise speech. the president tried, and mostly succeeded, to ban refugees from entering the country. my brother slept over in DFW airport, passing out water bottles and screaming at the top of his lungs. my parents got home, weren’t sure where he’d gone, and then spotted him in the background of the coverage on the TV news. my cousin got her first period at the women’s march.

in february, zach was deciding where to go to college, and we gathered in austin on the flimsy pretense of data-gathering. it rained the whole time. most nights, on my walk home, i’d pass by protests. i went on a handful of unmemorable dates. rupsha’s aforementioned birthday, the best weekend of the month by far. more work.

in march and april: coverage of a new supreme court justice. some watercoloring and some beautiful weather with nathalia, and some time, but nowhere close to enough, with others. three different passover seders, many hours spent listening to aimee mann. the white house press secretary referred to concentration camps as “holocaust centers” and said, out loud, to other educated adults, that hitler “didn’t even sink to the level of using chemical weapons.”

just kidding: four different seders, including the best one, with rupsha, in new jersey. boo wore pink and miles found the afikomen. the anchor stayed in my stomach until the very end, but i saw more live music: overcoats with liz, the wild reeds with nathalia, where we stood right in the front, holding a plate of nachos and singing along.

in may i could see the light at the end of a tunnel and i flew to san francisco and i wanted to stay forever. at brunch, the young couple to our immediate left let us hold their sweet baby while they ate chicken biscuits. we went into a pirate-themed store and the department of imagination and we found a man in a storefront at the alleyway, embroidering at the end of the world. my stomach was hurting but it felt inevitable and fine.

i left my job two weeks early and drove home and didn’t feel better, and my brothers graduated high school. josh spent the week wearing dresses that suited him and walked the stage at graduation in well-fitting black heels.

the summer was a mixed bag. i sat and felt anxious in a workplace in which i felt i was not thriving, and sometimes i went home and had panic attacks. but my roommate was a comical nightmare, and i felt loved and embraced by a community that spread its arms in all directions. i crashed on couches and in beds every night of the last three weeks. i went to museums with my college roommates. we went to clubs and stayed out all night. K, still happily married, prodded me onto a surfboard. we went to lake placid and it was wonderful; we were in brooklyn and it was wonderful; i studied for the LSAT i still thought i would eventually take and stayed out late and it was wonderful. S visited and it was sometimes wonderful, and we had a conversation we had needed to have for a long, long time. by the time he reached the point he’d been avoiding, two days later, we were separated on the phone, and i stood on the street outside of rupsha’s apartment. i took notes and cried.

and then...what? i spent a week in malala, oregon, sleeping outside and flinging myself as far away from everything as i possibly could. i cried again in the airport and i wasn’t sure why. i moved to anchorage, alaska, and gradually fell in love, and maybe a post about this city is coming another day. i wrote a tiny bit about my job. i take two buses to work every day, and two buses home. i decided to run a 5k, and i half-walked half-ran with some regularity, and felt good about my body and also weird about my body. i ran the 5k. i went on more dates. i felt happy and unhappy. i went on a handful of hikes before the snow came down. i slept in a freezing cold and wind-battered tent. i made toddlers laugh and then i learned their names. we threw a birthday party for avril lavigne and watched old meg ryan movies on VHS. i listened to more great music. i made latkes and sufganiyot for hanukkah. one day erin and i came home from the gym one frosty morning only to find everyone standing on the back porch, watching two moose, a mama and a baby, taking a nap in our back yard.

on the last week of the year, i house-sat for a family with two high-energy dogs and one low-energy cat. i took allergy medicine and made good use of the borrowed car. i walked the dogs past streets named after the solar system and i drove the car down the highway and to frozen patches of beach along the coast. i spent new year’s eve in sweatpants at the blue fox. none of us wore any makeup and erin sang three karaoke songs with gusto. the countdown to 2018 took us all by surprise. i started reading more often. that was also very good.

During the filming, what really struck me was "light!" They were able to use lighting to create the morning light that shines into the classroom. I was really amazed at having being able to see it for real with my own eyes.
