BPM for LIFE
1.ウォッチメン/HBO(2019)
原作は、核戦争の危機迫る冷戦下、ヒーロー活動が非合法となった1985年のアメリカを舞台にしたグラフィックノベルの名作で、1986年にDCコミックスから出版され、その後2009年に映画化されている。
このHBOによるドラマ版の舞台は、原作の34年後(2019年)の世界。単に原作コミックの焼き増しではないという点でも、映画版ウォッチメンとは一線を画す。
原作に基づく、パラレルワールドとしての「51州ベトナム」「ロバート・レッドフォード大統領」の延長線上に、史実としての「タルサ暴動(1921年)」、ドラマのオリジナルプロットとしての「黒人/女性の当事者性」「覆面警察」「オクラホマに降りつけるイカの雨」を取り込み、アップデートしながら唯一無二の世界観を作り上げている。
そして、原作でも重要な役割を担うDr.マンハッタンの存在意義をも更新しながら、”卵を割らなければオムレツはつくれない”事を、あるオムレツの視点から描く。
マーベル全盛の現状と今世に対するDCコミックスからのカウンターであるのと同時に、”Who watches the watchmen?(誰が見張りを見張るのか？)”という、black lives matterに通じる、現代の世相とそのコンテクストを理解する為にキーとなる主題。
Netflixで配信されている「裁判とメディア」「13条」「マルコムX 暗殺の真相」と合わせてみる事で、アメリカの虚構、姿勢、歴史の複雑性に対する認識のスタートとなる。2020年に見ない訳にはいかないだろう。たぶん。

2.DAMN/ケンドリック・ラマー (2017)
ケンドリック・ラマーの「Alright」は既に、Black Lives Matter運動におけるアンセムでもあるし、その「Alright」も収録されている「To Pimp a Buttfly」はhip hop史にその名を刻む金字塔だが、アルバムとしては次作となる2017年のこの「DAMN.」こそが、概念としての「白人」と「黒人」の溶解を目指す先にある世界、まさに変わり続け、同時に全く変わらない今の世界を表した作品として2020年に響く。
私たちの「Lust」という「Element」。
killer mikeの痛ましいスピーチに耳を傾けながら、多くを語らないケンドリック・ラマーの思いに触れる、55分間の壮大な並行世界。

3.フェイク・シティ/FOX(2008)
原題Street Kings。脚本家/原作者でもあるジェイムズ・エルロイの作品はLA4部作と呼ばれる小説群や、その3部目「LAコンフィデンシャル」映画版でも名高いが、今作でもエルロイの全作に共通する権力の腐敗と警察組織の内外から溢れ出る��生が全編に渡って描かれている。
見張りがつくるルール。それに抗い、もがき苦しむ、自傷的ノイローゼ患者としての登場人物達。アメリカの闇を、加害者性の中の被害者性という視点から描く、これぞエルロイというプロットとストーリーテリングは、暴力的に愛に飢える。
撮影、編集、音楽は凡庸で見ごたえは多くないが、ジョン・ウィックを筆頭に、キャプテンアメリカことクリス・エヴァンスや、今やズリことフォレスト・ウィティカー、the gameやcommonといったラッパーまで登場する豪華出演陣の、鋭く空虚な眼差しには一見の価値がある。

4.単一民族神話の起源 -<日本人>の自画像の系譜-/小熊英二(1995)
歴史が、如何に現権力によって作り上げられるか。
今「日本」と呼ばれる磁場に育まれてきた、複雑な土壌と多様性に傾注しながらも、その豊かさを押し殺し、虐げてきた「略奪者」「加害者」としての史実を理解し、自らの血と無知に向き合う事が出来るのか。
脳内をアメリカに植民地化された他者として自己と、そのアメリカの「種」という厄介を理解しつつ、日本の歪な現状を当事者として自己を理解するための気づき、手引き。

5.ラディカルな意志のスタイルズ/スーザン・ソンタグ(1969)
現代のアメリカを象徴する知性スーザン・ソンタグのエッセイ集。その中の一編「アメリカで起きている事」で、ソンタグは以下のように述べる。
「外国人がアメリカの”エネルギー”を讃えるのは、それがこの国に無類の経済的繁栄をもたらし、活況を呈しているアメリカの芸術やエンターテインメントの原動力であると考えるからだ。だが、そのエネルギーが根源的に悪いものであるのは確かで、私たちは、全ての人の神経をズタズタにするような、超自然的かつ人智の及ばぬ大きな変化を引き受けるという、とてつもなく高い対価を支払わなければいけない。これは暴力のエネルギーであり、流動的な敵意と不安のエネルギーであり、それを解き放つのは、恐ろしいまでに純化された、慢性的な文化的断層である。」
「白人種は人類の歴史の癌そのものである。そのイデオロギーと発明によって、拡散する先々にある自律的文明を絶滅させ、惑星の生態系バランスを転覆し、今や生命そのものの存立を危うくしている。-中略- こうした事を一部の”若者”は感じているのだ。私は改めて、彼らは間違っていないと信じる。彼らが勝利するとか、この国に何か大きな変化をもたらしてくれると言いたいわけではない。ただ、自らの魂を救いうるもの達は少なからずいるだろう。」
これが、半世紀前に書かれたという事実。2020年春の季節。

6. 25 years later/Blaze (1990)
マルコムXの暗殺から25年後の1990年にモータウンから発表されたBlaze伝説のファーストアルバム。
「BPMは”Beats Per Minites”ではなくて、”Black People’s Movement”なんだ。そしてそれは、他のカルチャーを蔑む事なく、ブラックコミュニティを含めた全てのマイノリティとそのコミュニティをアップリフトするためにある。」という力強いステートメントと共に、ソウル、ファンク、ハウスを縦横無尽に旅する最強のストリートアルバム。
「25 years later」のさらに25 years laterに、タナハシ・コーツの名著とケンドリックラマーの名作が生まれた事が感慨深い。

7.世界と僕のあいだに/タナハシ・コーツ(2015)
2015年に全米図書館ノンフィクション部門を受賞した本作は、前作”the beautiful struggle”がケンドリック・ラマーの”DAMN.”にも通じる父とタナハシの対話だとしたら、今作はタナハシから息子サモリへの語りとして描かれている。 アメリカの見る「ドリーム」の屍。その蓄積の上に成り立つ「黒人」の「ライフ」。日々に潜む、垣間見える、そしてあからさまに牙を剥く暴力と共に生きる肉体の息遣いが、世界の片隅、忘れ去られた東京にも聞こえてくる。
ジョーダン・デイビス。 トレイボン・マーティン。 エリック・ガーナー。 プリンス・ジョーンズのjeep。 アマドゥ・ディアロの41発。 歴史に刻むべきでなかった名前のリスト。

8.これがすべてを変える 〜気候変動vs資本主義〜/ナオミ・クライン(2017)
端的に言えば、種と格差、気候変動、ウィルスと人の共存に至る現代の命題は、全て「資本主義」という構造の問題に集約される事を伝える本書。 「ゲーム・オブ・スローンズ」「アヴェンジャーズ」「パラサイト」。今の時代を代表するそれぞれの作品が時代背景や文化は違えど、全て種と気候変動をテーマにしている事を考えると、ナオミ・クラインの問題提起はタナハシ・コーツの著作同じ方向を向いているように感じられる。
圧倒的なリサーチと行動力に基づいた気候変動と資本主義に関する文章だけではなく、ナオミ・クライン個人の母性と母なる地球のそれがリンクしていく終盤は、美しく、気高い。
