Some Screencaps that have convinced me Mike is def Vecna’s target next season (part 1):
Tumblr media
I have an entire analysis post just for this one cuz it’s my fave but a basic overview: literally why is Mike in a Max flashback that’s showing vecna symptoms, his reaction doesn’t rlly seem surprised… just concerned almost like he relates 🤨, also they’re BOTH WEARING WATCHES ON THE SAME WRIST AND THE SHOT IS SPECIFICALLY POSITIONED TO EMPHASISE MAX’S WATCH LIKE HELLO???
Tumblr media
If you zoom in a little and look closely there is literally a random clock right over Mike’s head and the red minute hand is pointing at 5, and this is literally during a fight where he’s getting defensive and lying hmmmm
Tumblr media
Will “You’re the heart and without heart we’d all fall apart” Byers is saying this line WHILE THE CAMARA PANS ON MIKE. Definition of foreshadowing bro. Also it’s worth noting that Mike’s face is half in shadow again here, just like how it was during the monologue that he lied in hMm
tagging those who requested it awhile back <;3

it's not my fault you don't like el p2 [byler mike-centric one shot]
part one | part three | mike gets vecna'd. music doesn't save him.
No no no no, Mike.
Will Byers had shouted, pleaded, chanted the words so often in the last five minutes that they had lost their meaning. They were only sounds now, background noise like birds singing or cars rolling by or the ticking of a clock.
The first cassette shoved into the Walkman did not wake Mike. El, Jonathan, Argyle tossed him new ones. Song by song, Mike rose another inch from the ground.
Boys Don’t Cry. Heroes. Small Town Boy.
Tape after tape, and still, he was rising.
Mike was moved by none of it. He hovered above the ground, arms outstretched; Christ without a cross, angel without wings, boy without hope.
No no no no mike
Will shoved the Walkman in the front pocket of his own shirt and wrapped his hands around Mike’s ankles. They were thin bone and neon fabric under his hands, pulling away even as Will tried to anchor them down.
At some point, Will stopped crying. At some point, the feeling in his chest cooled to nothing at all. Of course it would be this Vecna took. Their heart. Will’s heart.
Even when Will was on his knees to weigh Mike down, he couldn’t feel anything. There was only hollow expectation for the end. El’s shrieking, Jonathan’s shouting, Argyle’s babbling. They were all just sounds. Nothing.
He spared a hand to smash Walkman buttons. Record scratched, soundtrack silenced. Now Mike would hear nothing too.
Or maybe, he would hear Will.
“Mike,” Will said, the word grown threadbare and scuffed. “Mike. You haven’t been listening to me. For months. So, so,” he wrapped his fingers tighter, buried his knuckles in denim to keep him down, “You better listen now. I swear if you go and you don’t even listen to me once, I will be so mad at you. Do you want me to be mad at you, forever?”
If Mike could hear, if Mike were here, he would have laughed at that. The joke wasn't funny, without him.
“El doesn’t need you, Mike. She's strong all on her own. Nancy doesn’t even need you. She can, she can kill monsters all by herself. And Lucas, Dustin. It'll take a while but they'll be okay without you.”
El sobbed, Argyle whispered harsh, dude, Jonathan hissed Will. The sounds of them floated past, pollen on a breeze.
“But me? I'll never, never be okay. I need you. I’ve always needed you, more than everyone else."
Mike was unmoved. Will waited for the end.
"You can’t make me need you and then leave. I’ll never forgive you for it, and you won't be able to fix it. Ever."
There was water on his cheeks, dripping messy down his nose and chin. He had always been a mess, even with Mike there. He could only imagine what he would be after he was gone.
Will closed his eyes, dropped his forehead against Mike’s calf. He tried to listen for the sound of his breathing, to memorize it. Nothing.
And all at once, something. Everything. Mike gasped, and crashed from the sky.
Will caught him the best he could, hands sliding from ankle to knee to hip. Mike landed bent in his arms, wreckage to wreckage.
Will grasped at his knees, his elbows, testing their bend. Nothing was broken. He yanked his jaw up to see his face. Brown eyes.
And Mike was breathing, big greedy gulps of air.
“Mike. Oh my god. Mike.” He held his head up with his hands, ragdoll limp. “Did you hear it? Did you hear the music?”
Mike went limper, deadweight, and fuck. Fuck. Maybe he was still broken, broken in some way that couldn’t be seen on the outside.
Finally, Mike moved. His arms tossed around him, squeezing palm to shoulder, nail to bone, and Will finally exhaled. “I couldn’t hear it,” Mike said, and then again. He chanted it under his breath, a late harmony to Will’s no no no no.
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry, I didn’t know your favorite song,” Will breathed, clawing his hands into the back of his jacket. That stupid turquoise jacket he wore now. Stupid, wonderful jacket on stupid, wonderful Mike.
They stayed like that a long while, a distant clock ticking the seconds past.
"I didn't hear the music." After fuck knows how long - not long enough, never long enough - one of Mike’s hands unclawed from Will’s shoulderblade. Will prepared to let go before the hand flattened, pressed firm. Mike said, once too quiet to hear, second just a whisper, third a voice, “I heard you.”

ST5 POTENTIAL SPOILERS!!!
GUYS I FOUND THIS ON REDDIT AND ACTUALLY IT'S QUITE INTERESTING
ST5 Leaks/Fleaks
Gen Plot
Season picks up briefly where we left off in 1986 before jumping into either late 1987 or early 1988. The season is contained entirely in apocalyptic Hawkins. Things with the government are shaky. Owens doesn't appear in the beginning of the season and it's unclear if he's returning, but Ellen Stinson is the new Owens. Hawkins is like a combination of the UD and Kamchatka.
Labyrinths/Mazes being important to both the supernatural plot and the interpersonal relationships. They're inherently linked.
Two songs to be featured are 'Listen to Your Heart' and 'Alone,' both of which were apparently foreshadowed in a previous conversation between Hopper and Joyce, similar to how Hopper's "I'm the puppet, you're the master" to Joyce in S3 basically foreshadowed Eddie's 'Master of Puppets' in S4.
S1 and 2 scenes being referenced are "Nancy and Mike's conversation in the bathtub" and "Hopper + Lando Calrissian"
Lots of importance in COLOR CODING and blocking from the final shot of S4, and a good chunk is told in the costuming—like passing the torch from one character to another as their arcs overlap. For example, Hopper and Will share the "am I the curse and therefore putting my loved ones at risk by being near them?" sentiment for S5, therefore their wardrobe in the final shot of S4 is similar. Joyce/Jonathan and Nancy/Mike's costuming also similar for the same reason, whereas Eleven stands out because she's the first one coming into her own this season. The white for her represents shedding of false skins.
Character duos this season will be primarily dressed in colors of blue/green and yellow/red.
There's lots of symbolism and foreshadowing for every character in S5 from the moment Will touches his neck in the last sequence of S4.
S4 focused on themes of lies and miscommunication, and everyone is going to have to work through these lies before they can defeat Vecna.
Murray and Argyle are both back. Dimitri and Yuri don't seem to be in the beginning of the season.
One thing left unresolved with the Russian plot. Something important will happen involving the machine and the green liquid from the Starcourt bunker. Reference of Dustin vowing to die with Steve when they initially discovered it.
Hopper, Joyce, Mike, Will, and El had to be away from Hawkins, otherwise Vecna wouldn't have won.
An important death that they're nervous about given the reception to Eddie (not Joyce or Jonathan—see details below).
Eleven
We'll see her unlike we've seen her before. A badass who doesn't take shit from anyone. Not a Monster, not a Hero, Jane. Think: adult El could be headed for a Charles Xavier type role.
Erica, Lucas, and El will share scenes together.
El has significant blocking and development with many characters this season.
Max, Eleven & Max
The "kaleidoscope of colors" from a script the writers posted makes a feature in both the scene where young El remembers her mother's love in order to defeat Henry in the lab, as well as the scene where El revives Max. This is significant because it's the first time we see El using her powers on someone in a non-violent way.
El was able to revive Max because of she, herself, being revived in the bunker by Brenner and Co. It's a show, don't tell moment from the writers.
Max getting Vecna'd was foreshadowed in the beginning of 2x01.
Will, Henry/Vecna, The UD
Filming was supposed to commence mid-June, but Noah and Jamie were set to begin in May due to more complicated costuming. Will is going to require heavy prosthetics at some point.
Will's character design is blocked in three stages. The more the UD bleeds into Hawkins, the more connected to it he feels. The gates being open will physically influence him, especially when he's not as mentally strong.
He's kind of like "the card up Vecna's sleeve."
It appears they want to confuse the audience about Will.
Will wrestling with his own morality
Henry/Will mirrors. Will will sympathize with Henry because, unlike El, he knows how and what Henry thinks, and he can feel him.
Vecna and Will are very similar, but the difference is Will is made stronger by love not hate. They will play into that duality.
Vecna was nerfed in S4 compared to how we see him in S5. He'll be much stronger.
At the beginning, he'll be taking a hiatus while he plans how to divide and conquer now that everyone's back together in Hawkins.
Soteria will be the key to saving Will. If they want Will to be untraceable to Henry, they'll have to insert it into his neck and it'll be painful. Vecna not having access to Will fucks up his ability to leave the UD.
Byler/Mileven Triangle
Apparently, it's complicated and up in the air as of now.
Mike dealing with guilt this season. He feels guilty/responsibility for El. He feels stuck in a loop that keeps him from a truth he's scared to face.
Will and Mike to spend a good chunk of the season together based on character designs and blocking.
Will telling El that Mike won't like being lied to comes back with the painting. During a pre-time jump scene in 5x01, while everyone's together plotting how to defeat Vecna and brainstorming how to save Max, Mike brings up the painting El commissioned for a D&D analogy. Will has to pull Mike aside and confess he lied about El commissioning the painting. Mike gets angry, because he doesn't know about Will's feelings and feels embarrassed that Will thought he was that pathetic he needed to be given a pep talk. Their own version of a "fight you can't come back from." Immediately after their fight, we get the time skip.
Mike's character motivations are unclear and seem to be kept under wraps. After the time jump, he and El won't be talking as much because he's keeping the details about Will's painting from her. She's gonna ask what's wrong between him and Will, and he lies/is very vague.
Joyce, Hopper, Jopper
Joyce feels immense guilt/responsible over Bob's death since she's the one that asked him to help in S2, which is why she pushed Hopper away at first.
Hopper has a secret from S1 that was never addressed, and it comes back to haunt him.
Joyce sustains an injury in S5 that is reminiscent of the way someone was injured in S3, but it isn't critical and she'll be okay.
Jopper are the most established couple after the time jump. Lots of bickering still, but Hopper trusts Joyce more than he ever has.
Jonathan, Nancy, Jancy
So far, does not seem like a breakup is happening.
Jonathan's still lying about the college letter and distant because of it, and Nancy thinks he's not as into the relationship and that there might be someone else. She confronts him, which leads to a talk. She's touched by the lengths he would go to try and protect her and any of their future children even from himself.
A moment where we're led to believe Jonathan dies but doesn't, like Hopper in S3.
Hopper-Byers Family
These five characters slowly unraveling their arcs together and have always been closely linked. Their perfect endings are together.
We see the family combining, especially in relation to El.
Joyce gets to witness Hopper being paternal and tender towards the boys.
Scenes with Joyce, Jonathan, and Will
Hopper being back lifts a weight off Jonathan's shoulders.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So, now time to shine.
''(...) sentiment for S5, therefore their wardrobe in the final shot of S4 is similar. Joyce/Jonathan and Nancy/Mike's costuming also similar for the same reason, (...)''
Okay. How did we see Nancy in S4? Confused. Confused with the love triangle between Jonathan, her and Steve. Jonathan is her actual boyfriend. And Steve is her posible love interest again.
So, putting this in byler language: Nancy = Mike Jonathan = Eleven Will = Steve
If Mike's and Nancy's character's clothing is important at this point of the time line and that means they feel similar feelings, this could mean that byler has a chance. BUT then we read this: ''(...) He (Mike) feels stuck in a loop that keeps him from a truth he's scared to face.'' And
''Mike's character motivations are unclear and seem to be kept under wraps.''
THIS LITERALLY MEANS BYLER. FOR REAL. Like byler could be endgame. Also, remember Eleven's injury in S3? Do you remember the leak of a shoe covered in blood?
Tumblr media
It's Joyce. ALSO YOU CAN READ THAT WE'LL HAVE SCENES BEFORE THE TIME JUMP. And here it comes. Look at this freaking hair:
Tumblr media
Does this look more like this
Tumblr media
or this?
Tumblr media
The season 4 bowl cut right? So maybe this is right in some part? I dont know. But that could make sense why Will is wearing Mike's pants, because his clothes were in California by that moment. But i really do think that the pic that was leaked a few days ago is before the time jump.
Im so late with this info haha :) but i kinda think some things here make sense. Even if this is too well explained to be a leak.

Things in Stranger Things season 4 (Volume 2) which did not make sense, were forgotten or simply pissed me off.
❗️Spoilers obviously❗️
The whole town was convinced that there was a cult going on and people got up looking for Eddie and seemingly the rest of Hellfire Club because they were convinced it was a cult. Did they just give up? They never showed up again. Also the parents didn't bring this up at the end when everyone was reunited.
Why did Mike believe that the painting was for him and El when he clearly read the letter that said Will was painting it for someone he likes. Additionally, how the fuck did Mike not notice his supposed "best friend" sobbing in the car right next to him? You can clearly see him look in Will's direction but he just doesn't do anything.
Is the police just... dead? Where are they? Why are they not actively going after Jason's crew
Where is Owen? Is he alive? Why did he say that he could get El back in Hawkins in 2 hours tops if the Cali crew said it would take all night to get back, was he gonna call a private jet or something??
Where is the military? They went to that lab and then were never heard of again.
When Nancy was Vecna'd, she was in the laboratory. Why???? She had nothing to do with that place. Why wasn't she robbed from facing her own fears and traumas at the start of volume 2? Also when she got stuck in front of those doors which were blocked off by planks, they were push doors. Why did she rip off all of those planks if she could've just pushed the door and crawled in between those planks. Maybe I'm getting something wrong here but that just seems like such a hard thing to miss while writing the script...
Why did only Jason and his buddy go to Lucas and Erica when he had a whole team? Were the other guys just watching tv?
Vecna survived being transported to another reality and being hit by lightening so much that his skin peeled off, but can't handle Steve and Robin throwing a molotov at him? Or a shotgun? Really?
Did they leave Eddie's body in the upside down? Why is nobody mourning him besides his uncle and Dustin? I thought Mike, Lucas, Steve, Nancy, Robin and even Erica cared.
So El can bring people back from the dead now? That's not telekinesis, that's Mary Sue magic. What's next? She can share her powers with anyone she wants and then they can make people fly with the jerk of a wrist?
We still don't know why the upside down is stuck on the moment Will was taken. With the way this was brought up in volume 1 it really seemed like this would be answered in volume 2. But of course not, because Will Byers just kept getting sidelined in every way possible.
How come it was leaked that 5 people would die in volume 2 but the only important characters who died were Brenner (papa) and Eddie. Max died but she was brought back to life because apparently Eleven can do that now. That's not 5 is it? Or did they count the people in that helicopter who were trying to shoot Eleven?
Were we supposed to care about Brenner's death???? With how the cemra kept focusing so much on him? I was glad to watch him go!!
The timeskip of 2 full days in the middle of the climax???? Wtf was that??????
Mike being a complete asshole to Will these past 2 seasons was just for no reason then? He is JUST an asshole??
Were Robin, Nancy and Steve just choking on those vines for like 15 minutes or was the time where Eleven struck Vecna actually a lot shorter than that?
They actually forgot Will's birthday, I hoped they were just joking but they really forgot. He was the only character with a canon birthday within the series (until they talked about Dustin's) but clearly they care so little about Will that his entire existence is forgotten.
Wasn't the upside down toxic? Why is everyone just fine inhaling the shit?
The queerbait. No, gay people didn't bait themselves. Netflix, the Duffers, and the actors were actively promoting Byler and hyping up Will's sexuality when in reality Byler is just doomed, not just as a romance but as friendship as well. And Will did not explicitly come out to anyone. People are STILL in denial that he's gay and that's exactly why you make characters come out instead of keeping it "up to interpretation wink wink"
Will calling Mike the heart of their group yet Mike's the one who broke their party up the most.
Mike saying he instantly fell in love with Eleven when they met, as if he didn't tell her to shut up, go away and stop being weird back then.
Mike saying his life started on the day he met Eleven, the same day Will went missing, in his face. When Mike said before that the best thing he had ever done was befriend Will in kindergarten.
So did Vecna create the Mind Flayer or did it already exist? Cause if Vecna created it that's so goddamn lame and it adds no new mystery.
The continuous stereotypes and suffering/deaths of outcasts, poor people, queer people and people of color. One black character plays basketball and the other is a sassy one-liner. The brown guy is a funny weed man with barely to no relevancy to the plot. One lesbian gets a lazy background ship with a girl who is an exact copy of herself and the gay character is living in a painful unrequited love story and used as fuel for the main straight couple, without even being given a canon coming out scene. All this while the straight couples get together and have tons of moments together. Eddie who is poor, is seen as a cultist, dies and nobody besides 2 people mourn his death. Max, another poor character who had already lived through trauma and abuse, dies, gets brought back to life, is now comatose, probably crippled, and maybe permanently blind.
Will's endless suffering. He just can't ever be happy can he? Wtf is wrong with the writers...
Did the Russian crew just end up at Hoppers cabin like that in 2 days? No problems whatsoever? Wow that's convenient.
Hopper hugs Mike but not his new stepsons?
Not one, not two, but three jokes about Hopper once having been fat because he's lost weight in the prison.
Comments had some great additions and I came up with some more too so here's more:
Nobody showed up to Lucas' game when he had a very valid reason to want to play, and it was never brought up again. They all stood him up.
Eddie's death was so rushed and predictable. I saw it coming as soon as he said his whole "I'm a coward I run away I'm not a hero" speech. It's typical "I'm a coward so I'll die a hero" foreshadowing which is overused and just horrible. And in the end he didn't even save anyone, it was completely unnecessary. Eddie deserved to live.
Eleven not being able to win the final fight until she got validation from her boyfriend. Why was she not allowed to do this by herself?
The military watching the pizza van drive off and then do nothing about it? I thought they were experts at tracing and tracking, but nope, they just gave up after Eleven escaped the underground lab.
Just the Cali crew being sidelined so much when they once were such interesting characters (besides Argyle)
Steve saying he always loved Nancy and never moved on despite him telling Robin in season 3 that he didn't like her anymore. Let Steve move on and stop having Nancy jump from boy to boy, hurting them both in the process.
Just a nitpick but the sound design was so overly dramatic at times? Like Brenner LITERALLY snapped a pencil and the sound design was like ☄️💥🔥
Tell me what I missed cause I'd love to add it on this shit list.

fic recs!!
i woke up to being on a couple of fic rec lists and really appreciated it, so i wanted to capitalize on the nice energy and make a list of some of my own favs that i've read recently that i didn't necessarily see on the other lists :D check these out because they have some of the best prose/plots/characterization that i've read in the fandom :] 💜
one soft infested summer (M, 18k+, 3/7 ongoing) by @wheelersboy - this one is perfect for all the highler fans out there! it's got stoner byler of course, a music festival, lots out camping, and some really amazing writing! i started it just for the fun stoner vibes because Why Not, but i'm staying for the beautiful writing and the really complex and delicate relationship mike and will have in this one
Light Sleepers (T, 15k+, 2/6 ongoing) by @helioleti - WillEl-centric fic set during the time gap between the end of s3 and the beginning of s4 that explores their dynamic and their respective problems with mike, all while trying to cope with moving across the country from everything they know. each chapter is meant to reflect a certain stage of grief, which fits so well with all the complicated emotions everyone is going through!
drank my poison all alone (T, 4k, one-shot) by silverluminoqity - mike gets vecna'd and has to face his past self who's ashamed of who he's grown up to be, and my dudes the writing goes SO HARD. by far one of the best mike gets vecna'd fics i've read with such a good take on his character
star eater (T, >1k, one-shot) by @lowlightt - another fic where the writing does not play. honestly if you have a few minutes, READ THIS FIC. it's mostly just a confrontation between will and vecna, but it's so so powerful and impactful. and again, i cannot state it enough: the writing is AMAZING
tell me again (you said yes) (M, 32k, 3/3 complete) by @willow-lark - hey remember when cleradin was like a Thing for a brief second a few months ago? well if you miss those vibes, or if you just like great writing and some of the best weaving of canon into a fantasy au i've ever read, please look no further than this fic (and it's first part, fireball him! (cast protection)). i love this one dearly and enjoyed the wonderful ways Lark wove canon (specifically s1) into such a different setting, plus it was nice to see many of the other characters play a role in the events. beautiful, astounding, heart-wrenching - and did i mention there's an elopement 👀
In Undertow (M, 17k+, 3/6 on-going) by @souverian-are-we - this and one soft infested summer have become my summer byler reads~ when i say i love this fic, i mean you will have to pry it from my cold, dead hands 🥰 we've got estranged byler, jancy engagement with some stoncy going on in the background, and most of the characters still reeling from the consequences of their final battle with the upside down. it's all set at a lake house, which provides some breathtaking/atmospheric writing that this author uses to their advantage. it has some of my favorite scenes i've ever read in fic too, ones that have literally taken my breath away
california show your teeth (T, 77k+, 10/19 on-going) by @fireflywitch - what if the Byers and Hopper families were from Lenora and moved to Hawkins? this fic takes this one simple premise and turns it into one of my favorite fics i've ever had the pleasure of following along with. it essentially functions as a retelling of s1 and s2, gives almost every main character that's been featured in the show thus far a lot of time and space for their own plots, all while culminating into one larger story underneath. i don't think i've read a fic quite like this one in terms of its scope, plotting, and characterization, because there are a lot of moving parts, but this author goes above and beyond. i cannot recommend it enough
all i know is pouring rain (and everything has changed) (T, 3k, one-shot) by @willelfanpage - i think i read this one at the beginning of my workday while i was running some report on my computer and had to go about the rest of my day as if everything was fine ahah :'D seriously though, it's 3k words that pack an emotional punch all while examining will's relationship to rain. the writing is just gorgeous, and it's a character study that i haven't really seen done before, which was quite enjoyable~
Chasing Heartlines by (T, 7k+, 1/2 on-going) @cherryisgone - if you liked Tip-Toeing on Lilypads then may i direct you to its sequel, which features so much pining mike that he might as well be a tree? again, if you like cleradin/fantasy aus, then Cherry my beloved has you covered 💜 it fits so neatly with Lilypads and provides some fun contrast between will and mike~
Touch Me Like You Know Me (M, 15k, 4/4 complete) by @starsarefire824 - this exists in the rare pantheon of fics that actually made me cry. imagine an estranged byler reunion with all the emotions turned up to an eleven, and lots of lingering on lost time and how life sometimes takes us places we never thought we'd go. it's absolutely beautiful and is a classic to me :]
come back to me and forgive everything (T, 78k, 18/18 complete) by @howtobecomeadragon - i saw a lot about this one when it was on-going but am only just now getting around to reading it, and all i can say is why did it take me so long to get to it :') this author does such a good job of writing will and mike's relationship with a lot of nuance and complexity while still managing to make them feel like the teenagers they are. basically, will has to spend every july at lonnie's house in indianapolis, and for this summer in particular, the event is a lot more emotionally impactful for both mike and will. there's lots of emotional depth, the complexities of coming out and/or realizing you're queer, and, at the heart of it, how two friends try to mend things between each other. it's so soft and sweet
that's all i've got for now!! i'm quickly running out of time on my lunch break :'D also haven't been writing as much, but it's been fun to read more and relax a bit. hope you guys enjoy these because they're genuinely some of the best stuff i've had the pleasure to read in a while 💜💜💜

Just thinking that even though byler is perfect stunning incredible storytelling etc it's only going to be rewarding if Mike has his own self-realization arc first that's front and center to the story. He needs to get Vecna'd to show the audience what he's been thinking since S3! He needs to become a main character again! He needs a sense of agency!
Since S3, Mike's character has been mainly reduced to being a love interest and not really much more. Where is the smart fearless leader from S1-2? Where is the sassy loyal dungeon master who would jump off a cliff to save his friend? Before byler happens, Mike needs his own arc about coming to terms with his identity-- and in a big way. For being perhaps the main character of S1, he hasn't had much of a plot for a while. It's time for that to change.
The worst way for this to go would be for Mike to hop from being one love interest to another. Done right, he'll regain main character status, be a fully rounded character, and get the boy of his dreams.

I think a lot of situations get interpreted differently based on who is saying/doing something rather than taking the whole situation or relationship dynamic into consideration.
When Steve tells Nancy he wants to marry her and have 6 kids the people who stan Steve think it's romantic. But Steve broke up with Nancy 2+ years prior and has had minimal interaction with her since then. And no one-on-one interaction until S4 (and even then it was minimal). If Jonathan had been in his situation it wouldn't have been considered romantic. If they broke up and didn't see each other again for years and suddenly after 3 days of reuniting he was proposing and saying he wanted 6 kids with her, people would be understandably weirded out by this. The action itself was awkward when you consider their relationship (or lack thereof). The circumstances made that an inappropriate thing to say. It shouldn't matter who is saying it.
If Mike's monologue to El was done by one of the other couples, people would assume that relationship was doomed. If Hopper kept saying generic "it was love at first sight" crap and wasn't able to give any specific examples of why Joyce means a lot to him it wouldn't be good. Hopper has known Joyce since they were younger and not being able to reference any kind of moment that meant something to him would of course be a red flag.
But I can't even picture one of the younger couples saying this instead of Mike. Not even Dustin and Susie who seem like they know each other pretty well even though we don't see much of them. They bond over science and movies. I think they could come up with a speech more specific than the one Mike came up with. And I know Lucas and Max would have done better here. At least the Lucas and Max of S4. They are both more emotionally mature with regard to the way they relate to each other. And if Lucas had gotten a chance to say something like this to Max when she was being Vecna'd he could have. Because him and Max have bonded and they have shared interests and actually like spending time together.
So I don't buy for one second that Mike's speech was just age appropriate because he gave better speeches to Will multiple times - the shed in S2, and in Lenora in S4. And Mike has spent enough time with El at this point that he should be able to clearly explain why he likes her with examples easily. Even a 5 year old can tell you why they like their friend. It may be with basic examples like they have the same favorite color but they can still give reason. Mike's example of her wearing a yellow shirt when they met isn't a reason why he likes her. It's a statement of fact like him saying it was raining and cold. It's not personal.
And that talk in Lenora - the flirty one with Will where he's checking him out and telling him how nothing is the same without him - would have 100% be viewed as romantic if Mike said it to El. Or if Jonathan said it to Nancy. Or if Lucas said it to Max. No one would doubt this for a second. But Mike has never spoken to El like this ever. He has never acted like he's attracted to her (she hasn't acted like she's attracted to him either). They don't have that kind of relationship.
But people's perception is different when it's Mike and Will so they bypass the flirting and make excuses. If you can apply the same action and dialogue to a different group of people the response should be the same. If Dustin had checked out Lucas and told him Hawkins wasn't the same without him I would immediately assume a romantic relationship was being planned there. Because the action itself is inherently romantic. It would also feel completely out of place and random since there was no build up, but Mike and Will have been acting like this with each other for couple seasons now. They have this relationship dynamic where flirting is now normal, but Mike and El don't do this. Not ever. They do not act the way other romantic couples act.
It's not the story being more age appropriate. They are 15 years old and they were separated from each other for months. They would be all over each other when they reunited. But instead we get:
- Mike being super awkward and trying not to get close enough to her to hug properly and avoiding eye contact at the same time all while hyper focused on Will, - Mike asking El if she is going to hang out with her friends right after they reunite (why don't you want alone time with your girlfriend Mike?), - El trying to get Mike to focus on her and her alone and completely ignoring that Will is there and missing his friend, - Mike completely missing the fact that El is uncomfortable around Angela because he wasn't paying attention to her, - Mike not even asking her what she's been up to lately or how she is (they talked about milkshakes for fucks sake. Nothing substantial), - Mike getting distracted when he's trying to look for her to focus on Will and doing the least to comfort her when she's upset. They haven't seen each other in months and this was their big romantic reunion? Again, with any other couple this would spell out the end. It would take a lot for them to come back from this. A forced I love you when things are dire isn't fixing this. It wouldn't fix any other couple either. The situation/circumstances are inherently problematic. No matter who it involves.

Here are some proofs that Noah and most of the cast know that Byler is endgame in season 5.
The Duffer bros already outlined ALL of S5 during the pandemic.
Tumblr media
2. They wanted to film seasons 4 and 5 back to back, but because of time constraints, it was impossible. Why would they want to film season 5 right away if the scripts weren't already ready?
Tumblr media
3. Sadie told a media outlet that some of the casts KNOW what's going to happen to their characters.
Tumblr media
4. Noah, our lord, and savior said that the Duffer bros are building Byler up and that they're at their peak. He definitely knows WHAT'S UP. So does Finn. And David. And Gaten. Basically everyone.
Tumblr media
In conclusion:
THEY KNOW. BYLER ENDGAME. BELIEVE IT.
Side note:
I'm one of those people who think that they've already shot a few scenes for season 5. Because of all the leaks that didn't happen like, Lonnie, the harness, young Mike and Will (not sure about this one), Will at Rink-o-mania, etc. And this.
Tumblr media
It's a prom poster that was leaked a long time ago. Apparently, there's already a casting call for S5 and they're looking for cars that were made in 1988. The Duffer bros said that there would be a time skip. So, that means they'd be Juniors. Also, look at the theme of the prom. "Lovers ball."
It makes you think, huh?
EDIT: Apparently, it's just a draft, but I still think they've already filmed some scenes for s5! This MIGHT be real after all.
UPDATE: Season 5 starts right where s4 left off, and !RUMOR! has it that they already filmed the first 2 episodes for s5. The time skip is after those two episodes.
The second episode of s5 might be Will getting Vecna'd.

What if the reason Lonnie was at a table read wasn't because Will is getting Vecna'd, what if he was there for when Mike gets Vecna'd?
What if we see Mike's memories of Lonnie abusing a little Will or yelling at Will and Mike as kids for holding hands or something? And we get to see that as the origin for a lot of Mike's repression?
I'm always going to believe that Mike getting Vecna'd makes more sense. As I wrote about here pre-vol 2, ages ago, I think Vecna was written to uncover secrets specifically to help make the big reveal about Mike's sexuality.
There wasn't any other reason to make Vecna attack via trauma! Specifically revealing secrets of characters! They revealed Chrissy's trauma, Fred's trauma, Patrick's trauma through Vecna, but they didn't write Vecna to attack that way just to explore characters that were written just to die.
And for Max, her dealing with trauma wasn't a secret to the audience. Plus I really think that they could've explored Max's trauma thoroughly outside of the supernatural plot.
Mike is the one who is such a mystery to the GA that they needed a supernatural being to show just how deep seated Mike's repression is.
