History of National Ice Cream Day

We have President Reagan to thank for National Ice Cream Day. He wanted to commemorate the treat that more than 90 percent of the population in the United States enjoy, and so he decided he would decree a day for ice cream. He did so in 1984. Doing this actually ended up glorifying the dairy industry in the United States, and so it probably does not come as any surprise for you to learn that Ameircans eat more gallons of ice cream per year than anywhere else in the world.

In fact, they eat 23 gallons per annum to be precise. That’s a lot of ice cream, right? Reagan even created an Ice Cream month because he loved it so much. He described it as a wholesome and nutritious food that the vast majority of the United States loved. And, it is not only the United States that love their ice cream. This is a dessert that is enjoyed all over the world.

We also need to understand the history of this incredible dessert. Ice cream is one of the oldest types of desserts. It is believed that the history of ice cream probably started in Iran’s Achaemenid Empire, in roughly 500BC. This is when different flavors were combined with ice in order to create treats to enjoy during the summer months. In 400C, the Persians created a special chilled food, which was a mix of vermicelli and rose water, which was served to the Royals during the summer months.

The ice was mixed with fruits, saffron, and a number of other flavors. Bastani Sonnati is now the most popular type of Persian ice cream. This is a type of Iranian ice cream that is made from pistachios, vanilla, saffron, rose water, sugar, eggs, and milk. It also often has frozen flakes of clotted cream inside. It’s a real treat!

How to celebrate National Ice Cream Day

Well, first of all, get yourself out there and enjoy a heaping scoop of ice cream! Then maybe an ice cream sandwich, and then a delicious milkshake! Ok, are you sugared up enough yet? We didn’t think so!

Of course, there were the quiet times. Despite the alliances and the breaking of said alliances and love and hatred and complications, there were the quiet times. The people of the life series didn’t really hate each other, after all. It’s just how it was, really. Get thrown into the games, play them best you can, and come back for another round next time. No hard feelings at the end of it all.

In the early days, when everyone’s names were green and yellow, there was a kind of silent agreement that the server needed a place for everyone to come and relax, a general hangout. So one evening, the players brought what they could to spawn- a stack of wood, some stone, some glass. And they created a ramshackle building at spawn, a patchwork of early-game materials, made lovingly by hands who would eventually kill.

It didn’t have an official name, really. Etho called it The Place. Scott kept saying it was the hot girl summer bar. Ren called it The House Of Hanging Out Inside Of. Regardless of what it was called, the idea was the same. Every single person was welcome to the shack. There were drinks of all kinds, when the ingredients were present. A couple of dented musical instruments and music disks stood propped on a raised platform for anyone to play. Chairs and tables that looked like they’d seen war already. Some nights, Impulse and Tango would come in and fire up their makeshift grill, cooking up dinner for everyone. Some nights they all sang or did trivia night. Other times the place was silent, with one person sitting at a broken table, watching the candlelight stutter. It was what was needed, really.

Eventually, names dropped from green to yellow to red, and it wasn’t long before the fire started. The flames tore through the landscape, destroying houses and animals. So it wasn’t really a surprise to see the place go up in flames. Just kind of sad, really.

As time went on and people changed, so too did the building. One night, Scott spent five hours fixing broken boards so it “looked presentable”. Scar came in with some shrubs and flowers from time to time. Pearl kept hiding tiny paper cranes in the nooks and crannies for others to find. The land and it’s buildings were all new, but this place felt worn and loved.

(For context, I was reading It today and there was a building/bar called the black spot and it got burnt down and it’s genuinely been the most horrific part of the book so far. But I think the life series would have something like a common hangout spot for everyone, to make some joy for a while)
