WEEK 4: Reality TV and Social media

This week’s discussion follows the concept of Reality television and how in turn it may create digital publics via social media platforms. It addresses the way in which social media has created channels for audiences to interact and consumer reality tv. For example, social platforms have now become a space where viewers can discuss and share their thoughts and opinions about certain television programs in real-time. This results in a more immediate and engaged viewing experience. Personally, I think that this can be a positive implementation as fans of certain shows can come together and create a digital public community, however there can be negative side effects as this access can cause ‘hate’ posts and bullying via an online space and this is “something that reality TV producers need to be aware of when casting contestants and monitoring audience responses,” (Deller, 2019). It is also discussed that social media has now become a useful tool to produce and create hype around reality television series. Producers and creators can utilise social media platforms as a way of marketing due to the wide and engaged audience online. It also enables them to target certain digital public communities. Producers are looking to “seek out individuals who have a strong online presence.” Overall, social media has become essential to the success of reality tv, audiences can “boost niche interests into relevance” and even form together to “resurrect” cancelled tv shows (Bone 2020). Reality tv and social media also go hand in hand when reflecting on digital publics as it creates a sense of community as they can “discuss, debate and dissect every aspect of their favourite television shows,” (Mogg 2018).

⚰️ 16th March 1485, death of Anne Neville, English queen, wife of Richard III of England, and daughter of the "Kingmaker" Richard Neville. Dying probably of tuberculosis, Anne’s death was recorded as being followed by an eclipse, which observers noted as being an ill omen to her husband Richard III, who despite openly weeping was subject to rumours that he had poisoned her in order to marry his niece Elizabeth of York. This supposed omen played out five months later as Richard III, the last King of the House of York was killed at the Battle of Bosworth Field; the last decisive battle of the Wars of the Roses, which marked the beginnings of the house of Tudor, and the end of the Middle Ages in England. ⚔️ 16th March 1792, at a masked ball on the stroke of midnight, Swedish King Gustav III is shot by Count Jacob Johan Anckarström, who came upon the King holding a sword and a pistol. Prior to his ascension to absolute power, Gustav had been a mediator between the political groups supporting the peasantry and clergy (the Caps), and those supporting the aristocracy and military establishment (the Hats). In 1772, a Coup d'état led by the Hats, led to Gustav claiming absolute monarchy, his actions in the next twenty years alienated both political factions, including his declaration of war against Russia. On this day Gustav attended the masked ball at the Royal Opera House in Stockholm, despite being warned of an assassination attempt earlier in the evening. He was shot in the hip by Count Jacob Johan Anckarström, and died as the wound became infected on the 29th March.
