The June 1784 edition of the Connecticut Courant and Weekly Intelligencer newspaper displays a letter to the editor warning its readers to beware of ‘quack doctors’ , who proclaim that families who dig up their recently dead relatives and burn them, will be spared more deaths from the deadly disease of consumption. Lydia’s Story Continued (part 4) A true Story. 19th May 1817 - England had been suffering from poor harvests for at least two years, following the eruption 🌋 of the Tambora Volcano in the spring of 1816. Widespread hunger, malnutrition and increased mortality. Life was difficult for everyone. 1817 was also the year that Sophia Mayhew the elder (my 5th great-grandmother), was due to give birth to her 6th child. Her eldest, Sophia Mayhew the younger was illegitimate and the daughter of her lover, James Rager of Bedingfield. The young Sophia was not treated kindly by her step-father Zackariah Gooderham. This became clear on the morning of 19th May 1817. Sophia the elder had gone into labour, and the birth did not fare well. 🥀 A new baby girl was brought into the world as the mother slipped away from it. 😥 Sophia has died. 🥀 She was buried that same day, her child baptised alongside the funeral. 19th May 1817. Sophia the younger was afraid. Her mother had always been her protector, but now she was gone. She was 13 years old. Just a child. Suddenly she heard the new name given to the baby. To her shock, She was named Sophia. As if this child were her replacement. Two living siblings sharing a name was not common practice in Georgian England, usually one has to die. It meant only one thing, 13 year old Sophia was about to be sent away, cast out of her home in the pouring rain to fend for herself. She was a bastard, The prodigy of a dashing foolish young man, whom the NOW dead Sophia loved. Zackariah hated her for that. With just the clothes on her back and very little in coin. The door to her home closed forever. Young Sophia, #cold #afraid and unsure of the world that lay out before her - set forth on a journey south. She must find shelter, work, food - A new place to call home. Somehow, she will find the strength within. Somehow, she will find it. 13th July 1527, birth of Anglo-Welsh Enochian magician, alchemist, occult philosopher and astrologer Dr John Dee, court astronomer and advisor to Queen Elizabeth I. As owner of one of the largest libraries in England at that time, Dee amassed a wealth of knowledge upon alchemy, sorcery, Hermetic philosophy and astrology; and attempting to communicate and summon angels with what he believed to be the universal occult language of Enochian. In 1564, Dee wrote ‘Monas Hieroglyphica’, detailing his view of a cosmic harmony, alongside detailing his use of astrological and alchemical symbols. For these activities Dee was arrested multiple times, but managed to evade prosecution, the first being in 1555, for "calculating", and then treason for his horoscopes of Queen Mary, and her half sister Princess Elizabeth. Later he would serve as Elizabeth’s court astronomer and advisor, advising the creation of a "British Empire", a term coined by him. In his youth Dee had been a student of Dutch physician, mathematician, cartographer, philosopher, and instrument maker Gemma Frisius. Another of Frisius’ students was the founder of modern human anatomy Andreas Vesalius, author of De humani corporis fabrica (On the Fabric of the Human Body), published in 1543. On the same day in 1579 (13th July), John Dee’s eldest son physician and alchemist Arthur Dee was born, who served as physician to both Tsar Michael I of Russia and to King Charles I of England. In 1629, Arthur Dee wrote ‘Fasciculus Chemicus’, a collection of writings upon alchemy and its application. The work was translated from Latin into English by Elias Ashmole in 1650, sparking a reemergence of alchemy and esoteric interest. 16th August 1817, Beginning on this day, the coastal towns of the North Shore of Massachusetts were the scene of near continuous sightings of a strange sea serpent. First appearing in Gloucester harbor the creature was seen near the harbor every day for a month. Witnesses claimed it was between 60 and 100 feet long, with a chocolate coloured body, and a large snakelike head the size of a horse's head. All eye witnesses claimed that it moved through the water with the vertical movement of a caterpillar. Responding to the sightings the ‘New England Linnaean Society’, which had been formed in 1814, formed a committee to "collect evidence with regard to the existence and appearance of any such animal". Zoologically naming the creature ‘Scoliophis Atlanticus’, (Atlantic humped snake) the committee became the first cryptozoological investigative organization. The creature was seen every year in the North Shore for the next 100 years. The art shown is a reproduction of the Salem Gazette report of the sighting, and is for sale at the mythology section of the website where other cryptid creatures, ghosts, and vampires can also be found.
