Lighthouse in L'Alfàs del Pi (Alacant, Valencian Country).

This lighthouse was built in 1863 very near to the remains of Torre Bombarda, a watchtower from the 16th century used to watch out for North African pirates, who often attacked the Valencian coast to sack the towns and capture and enslave the population or ask for ransom.

So I really loved @sky-of-starflowers fic meetings-that-weren’t where Hob meets up with Dream in different forms in between the 100 year visits and had to draw all the different forms. It’s an incredibly well written story with a lot of depth to it, definitely give it a read!

my toxic trait is that i saw a “fun fact” on a girl’s profile in a dating app, went this doesn’t fucking sound true, and spent over half an hour hunting through primary sources linked on wikipedia and learning the etymology and history of word-usage just to prove the very specific and meaningless thing she said was false and then tell her that through the dating app. she’s not even my type

#she claimed the reason we call trains ‘trains’ is because they’re named after George Train #who ran a prominent railway company in the mid-1800s #but not only is the earliest usage of the word train to refer to locomotives 4 years before train’s birth #(according to merriam webster) #but the usage of the word train to refer to a series of units being pulled along a path #actually dates back to referring to soldiers animals and wagons potentially as far back as middle english #meaning that it’s entirely possible that when the first gravity driven wagon rails were invented in the 1500s #that people were calling those shits trains too #because they were pulled. by trains of horses #train comes from an old medieval french verb meaning to draw or pull #it was used to describe things pulled along in linked succession long before steam locomotives existed #the idea that we could ever possibly attribute the naming of trains to one failed presidential candidate #who ISNT EVEN LINKED on the wikipedia’s history of trains page #is fucking preposterous. and frankly this person really should have fucking sensed that #like how do you hear a fact like that and just believe it whole cloth #you should have the sense. to know that we use the word train for other things #it’d be fucking insane if that man invented an extremely common use word and was never taught about in schools #like. what the fuck. that’s so intuitively misinformation #but you’re still???? sharing it?????? why????? #oc #if a girl was 100% my type and i really liked her and then she confidently shared this misinfo with me #it would like. sour my attraction to her a little bit

Ambrose grew up in the Castle Cromwell, being related to Thomas Cromwell had its perks. He then was sent to his relative Thomas to be educated in the best household she could afford. She grew up in the lap of luxury during the Tudor Era

Mother: Jane Marie Cromwell, neé MacMillan 

Of the Sacred Twenty-Eight family, she was beautiful, erudite, well-mannered and wealthy on her own right. The youngest of fifteen children, she made a less auspicious match than her sisters and had more freedom in the choice of husband. She was betrothed and married at the age of 14 in 1483. In 1485 she turned sixteen and was allowed to live with her husband, but was advised not to consumate the marriage until she was eighteen at least. Given the many wars, her husband wasn’t much at home and was always tired and she nursed his wounds and illnesses until in 1499 he declared his wish to be her husband. At 24 he was married to the young Jane MacMillan. She was fairly beautiful, daughter of a fertile woman and of a high-standing family and reputation. They were married when she was 14 and in his marriage contract, he was not allowed to be alone with her in a room, but often came to visit her and joked together, and went on low-key dates with her ladies. From the end of the Wars of the Roses in 1486 to the many pretenders trying to invade England, John was often away and came back tired and wounded. He took few mistresses and with his wife’s knowledge. He appreciated that she wasn’t jealous and in repayment came back to her. In 1499 he expressed his wish to have an heir when she felt ready and in 1500 she fell pregnant with their firstborn, a son, Ambrose. The labour was difficult, and Jane was terrified of the ordeal, but in 1502 fell pregnant again and he supported her and though he was not allowed in the birthing chamber, he sent her food, water and goods to let her know that he wouldn’t leave her. They tried for more children, but all ended up in miscarriage or stillborn. One of them survived for a while, little Henry, who died at three years old. He doted on his son Ambrose, the very picture of his mother, and trained him to be the next baron.

Though no great beauty, she was a great example of a Rennaisance lady and the two of them had become enthralled with each other and promised to marry one another, her being the only daughter of a viscount and he, the only son of a baron. They were young and in love, and though they did not consumate their relationship fully, they were engaged in some endeavours of the sort. When he read that she had married another three years after his departure, he was mad with jealousy and heartbroken. He swore off another woman until he was 25.

Ambrose had heard rumours since he re-entered Hogwarts about two cursed sisters that everyone kept forgetting about, but didn’t truly meet them until he was sat in Potions with Minnie. They instantly cliqued but, the moment he woke up the next day, he forgot about her. The next time, something inside told him to write down who she was ( “Miss Minnie Ives, beautiful potions partner”) and soon figured out how to communicate: apart from talking when they were close, he also wrote her lenghty letters, and to his delight, she quickly responded, and soon they began falling in love. 

Ambrose always fought her cursed and soon began appealing to the British government to give him the barony of Altergham, since it had been inhabitated since the 1600s. After a few months, he won it back and was once again Baron Altergham. With that, after graduation, he asked Minnie to marry him, and she accepted. They married the next year and lived a fairly happy life, despite the curse. With his resources, he started digging a way out of the curse and spent thirty years that way. He came close many times, but always failed somehow. He did find a way to make sure that, if they died before undoing the curse on Minnie and Kitty, at least their children wouldn’t go through that. 

At the age of 48, he became suspiciously ill and, by November’s end, he died, leaving behind a possible cure for his wife’s curse. 

Friends: Ezra Greenaway 

Ezra and Ambrose met while rescuing his sister Lucie, and soon found several things in common and Ezra became a good friend of his future in-laws. Ezra also escorted him during his searches for a cure for the curse, and wrote about it as well.

plague au really is just me searching up ‘do 1600s 17th century peasants do x’ every five minutes

#youd be shocked on the lack of knowledge. i mean ofc there was the plague keeping people busy then the great fires of london not long later #but theres mostly info on middle ages eg 15th century #the 1665 plague outbreak was in the early modern period (approx 1500 to 1800) where there were a lot of big developments in things #so it makes sense there isn't as much easily available info abt that time as there is abt earlier periods #it's just very frustrating for me who is just trying to write fast and not have to fact check whether peasants locked their doors or not. #so. in summary. this au is not the most accurate thing ever but the big things are accurate and i tried really hard #the fic isn't gonna end up being super long but i'm like. really proud of this this may be one of my favourite things i've ever written #plague au
