15 question OC interview [Fynn edition] 🕑

Tagged by all the lovelies @ghost-town-story @fanged-solace and @willtheweaver -- thanks, guys! I love writing these they're so fun :) Today we're going to interview Fynn!! I'm very excited for this as his character recently got a bit of a behind-the-scenes makeover and has some new backstory. :)

Previously on, in case anyone wants to view, are Antonio's interview, and Paris's.

"We gather here today..." Antonio intones, holding his notepad and lantern as though he is the sole survivor of a doomed expedition in the jungle. "For a bold and momentous occasion."

"Speak for yourself," Paris says, leaning against the wall behind him. "Some of us gather for the entertainment." "Being me," Fynn says dolefully, trying not the clutch the armrests of his chair so tight that he ruins the fabric.

Are you named after anyone?

Not a terrible question to start off with, all things considered. "Yes," Fynn says. "My grandfather. He died when I was only a few years old."

When was the last time you cried? And a terrible second question. Fynn eyeballs Antonio, but he just looks normal. Which is to say, like an utter loon. Behind him, Paris and Velia knock their shoulders together. Only Lewis has some measure of sympathy on his face. Probably because he knows he'll be next before too long. "I don't remember," Fynn lies. He did remember. It had been the night before he'd decided to leave the city. Antonio raises an eyebrow but scribbles the answer down.

Do you have kids? "Booo," Velia says loudly. Antonio twists around in his seat to glare at her. "My older sister has children," Fynn says before either of them can start a fight. "I've only met the oldest two. They are some of my favorite people in the world."

Do you use sarcasm?

Fynn sighs. "Alas yes."

What's the first thing you notice about people? "I don't really," Fynn apologies. He tries not to wilt under the four confused gazes suddenly latched on him. "I'd make a terrible detective." "Not at all?" "Leave him alone, Antonio," Lewis says, and what do you know, Antonio moves on.

What's your eye color? "--I don't know," Fynn says, thrown. When has he ever noticed, or cared? Lewis scurries over and kneels before him. "Gray," he says. "Like steel beams. Or coal smoke." Fynn smiles down at him. Lewis winks.

Scary or happy endings? "I don't like endings," Fynn says honestly.

Any special talents? "No," Fynn says, frowning. "But I've skills. I'm a mechanic by trade, I know my way around an engine and the tools needed to maintain her, and a fair bit of carpentry as well." "And you're good with kids," Velia adds. "That's a skill alright."

Where were you born?

Fynn can't help but grin, thinking of home. "Norway."

What are your hobbies? Fynn frowns. "I'm a working man--" "Oh shut up," Antonio whines. "Live a little, Fynn. You're here with us, aren't you?" "Then you're my hobbies," Fynn says, just to see their faces. They don't disappoint.

Have you any pets? "I can hardly feed myself on a good day," Fynn says, realizing he's calmer now than he expected to be. "Can you imagine a dog trailing after me?" "How about a rat?" Paris suggests unhelpfully. "Since they're already your roommates?" "Or a pigeon?" Velia adds. Fynn rolls his eyes. The two of them, honestly.

What sports do you play/have played? "This is ridiculous," Fynn mutters. "Yes, ridiculous," Paris says, almost like he's been waiting for it. "Quite right, Fynn." Antonio shoots him a look. "I didn't invite you, you insisted on accompanying us. At least get out and leave us be." Paris leans down, grabs the notebook and reads off the next question.

How tall are you? "Fynn," Paris finishes, laughing a little. "Have you a measuring tape in your pocket?" "Yes, actually," Fynn says sheepishly pulling it out. He hands it to Antonio when he sees how large his grin is. Paris throws his hands up. "Might as well actually measure then." "Six foot one inch!" Antonio says triumphantly. "Good lord you're tall."

Favorite subject in school? "I stopped going to school when I came to America to work," Fynn tells them. "I can't say I miss it."

Dream job? "My job now," Fynn says. "With my family nearby and well and a steady paycheck." "And a flamingo," Antonio says promptly. Fynn stares. "Just to spice your plans up a little," Antonio elaborates. "Worry not, I will supply it." "You're going to make me steal from a zoo, aren't you," Velia says grimly. Antonio smiles.

Are you named after anyone? I'm named after Charles Darwin. If I'd been a boy, I would've been called Charles. My father is an environmental scientist and apparently my mother didn't have strong opinions about what to call me. She chose my sister's name though. Amber. It was more of a self-fulfilling prophecy than mine.

When was the last time you cried? Last night. It was late. Everyone else was asleep and I was very quiet. I don't cry in front of people. There's no point.

Do you have kids? No, and I'm not planning to. I'd be a terrible parent and I don't want to put a kid through that.

Do you use sarcasm a lot? Not really. I either say what I mean or don't say anything at all.

What’s the first thing you notice about people? If they're safe. If they're useful. If they're a potential escape route.

What’s your eye color? Blue.

Scary movies or happy endings? I'd rather have happy endings than be scared, but happy endings make me sad. I think I prefer endings that are supposed be sad and then actually are.

Any special talents? I'm academically gifted. I've been hearing that all my life. I'm so sick of it. And I'm absolutely wasting it, which is oddly satisfying.

Where were you born? Covenkirk near Aberdeen in Scotland. The writer says it's based on a real place but she's weird about using actual place names in stories.

What are your hobbies? I love reading. It's always been my favourite way to ignore reality and let myself live someone else's life for a little while.

Have you any pets? A white cat called Hazel. He sleeps on my bed and when I'm lonely or scared I bury my face in his fur and everything feels a little less awful.

What sports do you play/have played? I'm not into sports and never have been. I hated being made to do PE at school.

How tall are you? 5ft 4in

Favorite subject in school? English Literature, which was the greatest disappointment to my father who refuses to get over me not wanting to be a scientist like him.

Dream job It should be writer, shouldn't it? But I don't want to make up stories. I just like reading them. I'm not sure what I want to do and I don't suppose it really matters. I'd be happy just working in an office somewhere with no stress or pressure, going home at the end of the day and leaving work behind, with no-one expecting anything of me.

Nickname: Meg, MegMeg, Meggle, Nutmeg, Butmeg, and hubby likes to call me Trixie (because that would be my stripper name, he started using it as a joke to make me giggle, and now he can't stop using it.)

Sign: Libra

Height: 5'3"ish, which is around 161 cm

Last Thing I Googled: inches to centimeter conversion (the one before that was Indian embroidery, since I'm reading a book that features that quite heavily.)

Song stuck in my head: Boom Boom by Vengaboys

Number of followers: ....I don't know? Don't really care to find out either, honestly. I'm here to carefully cultivate my trash heap, so if anyone else wants to enjoy my trash heap, by all means.

Amount of sleep: Typically average around 4 hours at a time, as my body naturally wakes up then. Which is why I sleep half at night, half during the day. Yes, people are rude about it. Often.

Dream job: Trophy wife, hands down. Trust fund baby would be a nice second.

Wearing: a dark purple shirt with "Me crazy? I should get down off this unicorn and slap you" in rainbow block letters on the front. I made it!

Movie/Book that summarizes you: Is there a book or movie about an average 30-something wife/writer/mom that likes food, is a pack rat, and loves Tony Stark? Because I wouldn't read/watch that, all the fun stuff happens in her head.

Favorite song: Can't pick a #1 fave, but my most recent obsession is with sea shanties. The Last Shanty by Nathan Evans has been on repeat for several days!

Favorite Instrument: Geez, no idea. I like several of them for specific and/or similar reasons. Clarinets for good bouncy music, pianos and cellos do really pretty and/or melancholy so well, mandolins make me feel all !!! inside, ukeleles are a different, calmer bouncy.

Aesthetic: Uh, probably glitter. Colorful glitter.

Random Fun Fact: I have a scar on my knuckle shaped like a J! I named it Jarvis, and it doesn't even have a cool story. (I also thought this was asking for like... a generic random fun fact for a second and I sat here trying to decide between an animal fun fact or something else.)

1 - Are you named after anyone?

Yes, my dad. I even stole his childhood nickname. I was almost named after my biological father instead and I don’t think that would have gone nearly as well. My middle name comes from St. Nicholas because I was supposed to be born a couple days before Christmas(I was born a week after). 

My pen name came from some Latin words I threw together that I liked the look of for a character for a space pirate story I had been writing at the time that has since been abandoned if that counts?

2 - When was the last time you cried?

A bit more than a week ago. My wife and I were going through some boxes of crap in our shed and I found a note from my mom who I’ve had a falling out with.

3 - Do you have any kids?

Only the kind with four paws that say meow, woof, or squeak.

4 - Do you use sarcasm?

Far more than I should. I’ve also discovered working in customer service not many people can pick up on it. So not well I guess.

5 - What's the first thing you notice about people?

.Usually their shirt. I have an issue with making eye contact so I rarely look up above the collar bone. 

6 - What is your eye color?

7 - Scary movies or happy endings?

Both? I LOVE scary movies. But I’m also really into romcoms. I guess Happy endings since I don’t like reading things that don’t have a happy ending. 

8 - Any special talents?

Aggressively supporting my friends. Not just liking and sharing their shit but like, one time at comicon someone at one of the booths mentioned he didn’t get to look at the art a friend had before she she had moved to another table. I just go “hang on.” And walk up to my friend and grab her portfolio from her without even a ‘please let me’ and make her come catch up to me to talk to this dude. And like, most of my friends are artists in some form or another. SO they all get the ‘this is shit because I made it’ and I will 100% spray them with a spray bottle because “It’s great you dumb b*tch post it online or I’ll do it for you.”

Western Colorado, United States

10 - What are your hobbies?

besides writing(and reading which seems to universally go hand in hand), I play various video games(P.F.Magic Petz being the one I sink the most hours into and mod).

11 - Do you have any pets?

Yes! I have a long haired dachshund mix, Wrangler(Wrang), a chihuahua Bama(technically he’s my wife’s dog), 3 cats - Smudge(who was my wife’s cat but he likes me better so he’s mine now), Ace, and Stray, and a mouse named Trauma.

I also volunteer at a rescue ranch my friend runs so while they’re not mine there are quite a few animals there I know just as well as I know my own.

12 - What sports do you or have you played?

.I played basketball in elementary school. I had to quit though. For the most part I avoid sports though. Especially any that requires equipment. Turns out you can forget to ride a bike. Right into a pole I went. 

13 - How tall are you?

.5′7″

14 - Favorite subject in school?

I really liked...math. Shhh. Don’t tell anyone. I also enjoyed art and English classes.

15 - Dream job?

Full time author ideally. But barring that, I’d be good with anything where I don’t have to deal with people on a day to day. Give me data sheets to type into a computer or something. No more customer service.

Honestly, it’s been a while. Definitely over a month, and I’m hoping to keep it that way for longer.

Nope.

Depends on the occasion and circumstances. Sometimes.

5. What sorts of sports do you/have you played?

Professionally, none. But I’ve always loved badminton.

Honestly, hair. Since we’re talking about “first thing”, that’s something I always first notice about others.

No scary movies for me. I prefer happy endings, or at least ones that really make me think.

1. Are you named after anyone?

Not that I know of. I suppose there's probably someone in the family tree named Kristopher, but as far as I know it wasn't a super thought-out choice. My middle name is definitely a family name, though.

2. When was the last time you cried?

I don't know. I was probably drunk at the time.

3. Do you have kids?

No. I've never really thought about having them, and I'm not at all in a place to have them right now.

4. Do you use sarcasm?

Yes. Pretty often. My parents hate it.

5. What’s the first thing you notice about people?

How they greet me. It says a surprising amount, especially about what they want from me.

6. What’s your eye color?

Brown. Not very exciting.

7. Scary movies or happy endings?

Happy endings. It's nice to see them somewhere, since they don't happen in real life.

Pissing people off? I don't know.

9. Where were you born?

The castle in Westcliff, Oryn.

Riding, drinking, archery, and swordsmanship. Usually not all at the same time.

No, I'm not. My parents told me they just liked the sound of my name.

2. When was the last time you cried?

The last time was when my whole world burned to ashes.

3. Do you have kids?

I don't have any, no.

4. Do you use sarcasm?

"Do I use sarcasm?" Of course I use sarcasm.

5. What's the first thing you notice about people?

The gait of their walk can tell me a lot about a person, like their current general mood and any sort of training they took.

6. What's your eye color?

I've got blue eyes, but I much gem-like colours, like Master's ruby red or Aliah's emerald green.

7. Scary movies or happy endings?

Happy endings, if they existed.

8. Any special talents?

I don't think I have any.

9. Where were you born?

A little countryside town in the Kingdom called Moonfair, though I suppose that doesn't matter any longer.

10. What are your hobbies?

I suppose anything to occupy the mind, cooking or carpentry, for instance.

What's a sport? Recreation? I don't have time for that.

About 180cm, or 5'10".

There wasn't a school in town because there were barely any children. The only schools I know of are the academy cities, if they're still around. And Master didn't teach me anything you could call a "subject", but I did like working with food when I had the chance.

I don't have time for dreaming. I already have a job to do and that's hunting demons.

(Author note: One of my favourite writing hacks is making characters the same height and build as my husband so I have a 3D working reference model at home for those "Could you lift that thing/throw that guy/jump off that and be OK?" moments. Not sure I ever outright stated it, but Noah in November Breaks is also 6ft 4in and a big solid dude for the same reason.)

I saw people posting this, and most everybody said to treat it as an open tag, so I decided to do it too! Tagging (with no pressure at all!!) @mjparkerwriting @kainablue @karimac @melusinewrites @mayonnaisepudding and also ANYONE who wants to do it!

The concept for this is to write responses to the following questions as if you are your original character answering, or just as yourself. I haven't talked about myself much outside of my writing on here, so might as well do it now, right? So! Answering as me!

1 - Are you named after anyone?

My first name (Avery) was just a name my parents liked. My middle name is actually my grandmom's and my great grandmother's name. My mom didn't want to name me that as my first name because she thought it was better as a middle name. So that's my name!

2 - When was the last time you cried?

I cry A LOT. Over songs, commercials, movies, shows. I make myself cry sometimes because I think it's healthy to let it flow. I literally started tearing up at a book I was reading today. The last time I cried cried though (for real, not because of content or something) was when I had a super bad panic attack. I have OCD, and sometimes you get so panicked you just melt :(

4 - Do you use sarcasm?

Ehh, I have tried. But I am not sarcastic. I'll do it as a joke sometimes when someone says something obvious about me (i.e. Whaaat? Me? Liking books? That's crazy!) but not in any real way.

5 - What's the first thing you notice about people?

Definitely the way they carry a conversation. If they interrupt people, seem rude or ill engaged. I like talking, but I realize that conversations involve two people. It's a big red flag when someone can't share a conversation.

6 - What is your eye color?

Brown! Lovely, if I do say so myself.

7 - Scary movies or happy endings?

Happy endings, no doubt. I can't actually handle scary movies (because of my OCD. Hate to blame everything on it, but it's definitely true. I ruminate way too hard on scary, violent things). I'm a sucker for a happily ever after! It's what I hope I can have one day, so I like seeing it in my media.

8 - Any special talents?

Besides writing (which I am learning to accept as a talent), I craft and sew for cosplay. I sing too, and I think I have a nice voice. I have a lot of hobbies, but I don't think most of those qualify as a "talent." I'm pretty dang good at building houses in the Sims. I think that's an underrated talent.

9 - Where were you born?

Maryland, USA

10 - What are your hobbies?

Ah, yes. I mentioned them before but let's list them: Cosplay (sewing and crafting and all that), reading, writing, drawing, painting, playing video games, baking, collecting items (is that a hobby? I do it so much I think it must be), jewelry making (it sounds so fancy but I just make little bracelets and earrings with shrink plastic sometimes).

11 - Do you have any pets?

My family does! We have four cats: Ash, Whistler, Taffy, and Pike. I grew up with cats, and I miss the ones we've lost every day. (RIP Rainier, Nauset, Odell, Asia, and Ebony.)

12 - What sports do you or have you played?

I am not a sports girly. Like AT ALL. But I did run cross country for a semester back in my freshman year of high school. I absolutely hated it. Instead, I picked up musical and children's theatre. That's almost a sport...? Generally, I like to swim and dance (I'm not good), but it's not like a "sport" really. Just for fun to move my body when I feel like it.

13 - How tall are you?

Honestly? No clue. Haven't measured in many years. Somewhere between 5'8" and 5'10" I would guess?

14 - Favorite subject in school?

I've always been really into English. (My dad was an English teacher so it was only natural.) Also, any English extracurricular like journalism and creative writing. I was actually a journalism major until halfway through college. I switched to focus on English and picked up minors in journalism and linguistics instead.

15 - Dream job?

I'm about to ship off to grad school to get my masters in library sciences, so the hope is to become a librarian. It's realistic, so I'm excited to do that someday! On the side, I really hope to be a published author. I don't expect to make much money (if any) but I just want to get my work out there for people to find if they need it.

1 - Are you named after anyone?

No. I think it means calm melody, so perhaps as the fourth child I was named in hopes my personality would match.

2 - When was the last time you cried?

I am over do for it. I probably should let myself cry it out more.

3 - Do you have any kids?

Not yet.

4 - Do you use sarcasm?

Rarely and probably improperly. Not a very royal way to speak.

5 - What's the first thing you notice about people?

Their eyes. I've always found you can tell more about a person from watching their eyes than anything. Well, aside from the things they do of course, but I can hardly notice that first.

6 - What is your eye color?

Brown. I didn't inherit my father's lovely blue eyes like my brother did.

7 - Scary movies or happy endings?

I probably should prefer a happy ending, but I don't mind a good startling I guess.

8 - Any special talents?

I am rather good with plants. Probably the druid ancestors.

9 - Where were you born?

The Adullam Palace in Haebrook.

10 - What are your hobbies?

My main hobby was gardening, but that's not a very practical hobby when the ground dies. Cooking is rather fun though I don't know much about it. Royals don't tend to cook their own food.

11 - Do you have any pets?

No I never have. I think I would like one.

12 - What sports do you or have you played?

I don't get to play much as a princess but my brother Mircea would indulge me with some sword fights. With sticks, of course.

13 - How tall are you?

Not quite as tall as my oldest sister, but not short. I think 5"5'.

14 - Favorite subject in school?

Dancing was always fun. For actual learning I always found the natural sciences the most interesting.

15 - Dream job?

If I could indulge my most whimsical inclinations I suppose I would want to be a poet.

1. Are you named after anyone?

Yes, the Greek Goddess of the night, Nyx. My mother loved mythologies.

2. When was the last time you cried?

A few days ago when I watched a movie with the guys. It happens more than I would like to admit.

3. Do you have any kids?

No and I don't want to. They scream and they smell and honestly i don't feel like I would be a great parent.

4. Do you use sarcasm?

Sometimes, but only around people I know.

5. What's the first thing you notice about people?

Their body language. Like if they avoid eye contact, if they play with their hair or hands when they're nervous, etc. It helps me understanding them since I am bad at communicating with words.

6. What's your eye color?

Brown.

7. Scary movies or happy endings?

I don't really care. I only care about enjoying the story.

8. Any special talents?

Call me crazy but I can understand and communicate with the creatures of the cosmos, as if we were speaking the same language.

9. Where were you born?

I don't remember. The writer never stated that but I suspect that he is planning to reveal it at some point. But as far as I'm aware, somewhere on Earth.

10. What are your hobbies?

Reading and studying, learning new things! And not only space things, but everything! I love being able to tell my friends random facts about things they probably don't care about!

11. Have you any pets?

Technically he's the crew's pet but Orion spends most of his time with me. He is a kind of cat we found on another planet.

12. What sports do you play/have you played?

I'm not really a sports person...could napping become a sport?

13. How tall are you?

1,58m, writer gave me the same height as him, in a world full of giant aliens!

14. Favourite subject in school?

It's no surprise but I loved physics as well as biology.

15. Dream job?

I used to not know, or maybe not care, thinking I would never have the chance to do anything good. But then I have been given the chance to work with the Asterian crew and I'm on my way to become a pilot and I think I could say that this is what I was meant to be.

When was the last time you cried? .... it was recently actually, after complaining that I couldn’t cry, I had a breakdown but it was a good breakdown?

1. Are you named after anyone?

Not my first name. However, my middle name, Adelia, was my grandmother's first name, and I'm proud to have shared it with her.

2. When was the last time you cried?

I'm not sure. The last time I majorly cried was after my mother's funeral. I've probably cried over a few smaller things since then, but nothing I remember super clearly.

3. Do you have kids?

No, not yet. But it's expected that I have a child at some point, be they by birth or adoption, to continue my family line. I don't see myself having more than one, though.

4. Do you use sarcasm?

Not often. My words can be cutting at times, but sarcasm is not my preferred way to speak. Besides, it doesn't exactly provide the best impression of me as Queen.

5. What’s the first thing you notice about people?

Physically, their eyes. You can tell a surprising amount about someone from their eyes. Otherwise, their posture.

6. What’s your eye color?

Dark grey, with a hint of maybe blue. I've been told they remind people of stormclouds, on occasion.

7. Scary movies or happy endings?

Happy endings. Sometimes you just need hope that things will be okay in the end.

8. Any special talents?

Not that I'm aware of.

9. Where were you born?

The royal palace of Anvia, a couple of miles outside of the capital, Carisfell.

10. What are your hobbies?

I don't have time for many hobbies, but when I have the time I enjoy reading, walking in the palace gardens, and riding through the countryside.

11. Have you any pets?

Aside from my horse Alena, not really.

12. What sports do you play/have played?

None. Unfortunately my upbringing didn't provide time or space for sports.

5'6"

14. Favorite subject in school?

I always enjoyed my dancing lessons. I'd probably say those were my favorites.

15. Dream job?

The only dream I ever had was to be Queen. It came true a little sooner than I would have liked, but now I try my best to do things that would make my mother proud.
