Design Flaws
The snowy hawkbats should have been Cipher Thirteen’s first clue that this was a bad idea.
They were cute. Just like his own little hawkbat form, except white and fuzzy (not to imply that his hawkbat form was cute).
Covered in a downy layer of fur, like the finest of winter fashion, they clung along the walls of the ice canyons as if they were granite slug-infested ferrocrete and not … frigid and forbidding wastelands (he wondered what they ate). They didn’t have the echolocation horn that he did, or the bioluminescent, environment-sensing fronds, but they did have the tiniest little, fur-covered triangular ears, which he, of course, did not.
Adorable.
With shorter, broader wings, and claws more like miniature icepicks than something reasonable, they nestled together in overlapping layers, covering the exposed, pale skin along the lower third of their wings in fuzzy warmth. Every so often the bottom layer of snow bats would take flight, maybe locating some kind of nourishment, before flitting sporadically back to take their place at the top of the column, tucking in and making the whole colony readjust as they chased the rising line of the falling sun. Neat.
Thirteen turned from the window and went to locate Watcher Five.
* * * * *
The fact that even tauntauns refused to traverse the landscape at dusk should have been Thirteen’s second clue.
“The sun’ll be down in an hour,” the animal keepers told them. “Tauntauns won’t do it. They won’t. Lookit ‘em. They know. It’s a five-hour trip anyway by mount. Did you try the speeder bay?”
Yes, they tried the speeder bay. All were down due to climate-related mechanical issues. That’s why they were here.
Five and Thirteen were forced to abruptly step aside as a tauntaun retreated, with loud complaints, into its not-all-that-warm, yet somehow preferable, stall in the ice cave.
Time for plan, uh. C.
* * * * *
They had, of course, what the tauntauns didn’t, which was thermal clothing embedded with thermal heat packs, specifically made for this planet, for this weather.
Well, Thirteen didn’t, not anymore, not for Plan C. But that was fine. He had thick skin and he’d flown in the cold before. Five packed a duffel with extra winter clothing and gear, while the monstrous, dragon-sized hawkbat looked on, and they were ready to go.
Intel, and Intel’s finest, don’t wait for daybreak.
Thirteen launched them into the fading dusk, and the winter air wrapped around his wings in a cold embrace. The low clouds on the horizon were tinged pink.
Delightful.
Three hours by air to the next installation, max. It would be easy.
* * * * *
Nobody told Thirteen that massive wings capable of resisting blaster bolts can still lose heat like a sieve. And so can large, unfurred ears, like the ears he has to accommodate the echolocation that he’s trying so hard to use right now in the face of the blisteringly cold wind and the downright blistering, driving snow.
The snow stings his eyes and sharp gusts batter them about in the dark. Thirteen does his best to smooth the journey for Watcher Five, and he thinks he succeeds, but he can feel the air yanking and shoving his wings, and it’s an effort to keep them even. His muscles tremble.
How long has it been?
Well, they’ll be there soon enough. If Thirteen is cold, then Five certainly is. He just needs to persevere a little longer.
Tiny icicles form on his eye ridges, and across the rim of his ears and inside them, from the steamy plumes of his hot breath. Not for the first time, he shakes his head to dislodge them, snapping his beak in futile annoyance and grimacing at the burning of his chafed skin. They interfere with his hearing - with what he can see in the sound. Far below, he perceives the slopes and edges of the landscape.
No base, yet.
A little further.
His wings are stiff from the cold, and he pumps them regularly to keep speed and keep blood flowing. This is fine. He’s flown in the cold before. Not like this, but … still cold.
The wind howls and makes the icicles sing, and he shakes his head again. Five beats on the base of his neck.
It’s fine. He screams into the wind to tell him so.
It bites back into his lungs.
It’s … painful the way the delicate fronds at the back of his head seem to transmit the frigid air straight into his skull. Had he ever had the problem before? He can’t remember. Maybe he should speak to Five about … a hat. A hawkbat hat. For a giant hawkbat.
The idea makes him chuckle. Oh, but this snow is annoying. It makes his eyes water. Five has goggles, doesn’t he? Thirteen needs those too. For now, maybe he’ll just close his eyes. He doesn’t need them, anyway, can’t see anything even with all the extra spectrums his eyes have access to. Premium design choice, and for what?
No, he can hear the landscape just fine.
The ache of his body fades into the wailing monotony of the wind.
An hour later - or is it minutes later? - he tries to open his eyes and realizes they have frozen shut.
Well, that’s … dastardly. And unfair.
A good shake does nothing for them, neither does a second, longer and more vigorous shake. He could beat the ice free, perhaps, with a wing, or a claw, maybe. But that’s not really conducive for flying or for passengers, is it?
Damn it, Five.
Well, he still has his ears. They’ll be there soon. Won’t they? He’s sure they will. How long has it been?
Five is still there. Isn’t he? He should be. He’d be an idiot if he let himself fall after all this time. Well, he’s wrapped up in enough thermals that they’d cushion the landing and he’d still melt a crater into the ice like a superheated meteor. It’s fine.
He thinks he feels Five patting his neck again. He thinks he hears Five saying something, which his giant ears would definitely pick up, even with the wind. Yes, it’s fine.
It’s fine.
His wings are heavy. He beats them. He thinks he does. He listens, hard, for their destination to appear. He doesn’t hear anything.
The clouds muffle everything. Should he go lower?
No, he can hear through clouds. He can hear through that annoying ringing, he can hear past the heaviness of his breath.
He can. He was made for this.
He was.
Except, he wasn’t.
He thinks of flying with a giant winged wolf, soaring among mountain peaks, under a clear, starry sky. She has the aurora wrapped like a shawl in her mane and her tail - the sparkling banner of a comet. He hears her, in the wind. Howling.
Howling.
She was made for this.
Gradually, his head and wings droop.
The flight comes to an abrupt end.
Thankfully, he doesn’t notice when he plows, headfirst, into the icy slope.

I had a perfectly wonderful Easter weekend in San Francisco with my very best friend. I sat in the sun, and made new friends, and drank wine- both with and without bubbles - and watched seminude people dancing in the park, and ate bread, and laughed until I cried, and spent money I don’t have, and ate more bread, and drank more wine, and spent time with people who understood what I was saying, and what I meant when I said it, and cried myself to sleep, and was crushed by the weight of 13 years, and then came alive again.
Every time I go back it’s the same, and also a little better, and also a little worse. I’m always stronger, but the magnitude of my absence is always greater. I forget how truly suffocating it is to be where I am, and to suppress myself as much as I do. The escape is as cathartic as it is gutting - I’m not where I belong, and I’m letting time go by. I am not supposed to be here. I am not supposed to be wedged in the rut between my apartment and my grocery store, planning my days around the avoidance of extreme weather conditions 8 months out of the year.
But this time, for some reason, for the first time in a very long time, the burden of rescuing myself does not seem so daunting.

35. where was the weirdest place your muse has fallen asleep?
36. has your muse ever fallen asleep or been extremely tired in a situation where it isn't safe to be (ex. while driving)?
I’M VERY SORRY FOR RESPONDING SO LATE things came up and i got distracted! im very sorry for this! but, here they are, i hope u like them!
1.what size bed does your muse typically prefer to sleep on? (ex. twin, full, queen, etc) Their bed is two full-size beds pushed together to make a super mega jumbo monster-size bed, made of two different mattresses; a medium-firm mattress for Liet and his back problems, and a medium-soft mattress for Matty.
2. does your muse find it easier to sleep in a warmer room or a cooler room? Matty prefers to sleep in a warm room. Liet prefers to have the fan on max cooling, while also being wrapped up in a blanket burrito. Also, I feel I should add that Liet's feet are perpetually freezing, and he puts his ice-feet on Matthew's legs when sleeping :/
3. is your muse typical about where they sleep or can they fall asleep just about anywhere? Liet, yes, a little bit; but, his sleeping spots are not *all* just in his bed. His sleeping spots are also in the car, on the sofa, in his chair at the meetings, and in his hammock in the yard (though, it has to be warm and sun-shining for this). He also might fall asleep sunbathing occasionally, though.
4. what position does your muse usually sleep in? Liet like to curl up wrapped in nice, thick, blankets. Sometimes, he wants to be spooned. And, he prefers to be the little spoon. But, most of the time, Liet drifts off while resting on Matty’s chest. Matty likes to sprawl out, and also likes to hold Liet in his sleep.
5. does your muse tend to prefer firmer mattresses or plushier ones? Liet prefers medium-firm mattresses for his back problems, and Matty prefers medium-soft mattresses
6. does your muse snore? do they sleep talk or make any other sounds in their sleep? Matthew doesn’t really do any of that, but Liet on the other hand. Liet tends to talk in his sleep a lot, and often even whimpers, yells, and cries a bit. He also drools on his pillow, but like, it’s a more normal amount of drool, so Matty isn’t annoyed.
7. is your muse a still or active sleeper? do they move around a lot in their sleep? During normal dreams, no; they would be mostly just staying still and cuddling. But when Liet has a nightmare, it’s like he gets in a full-blown brawl with the blankets!
8. does your muse typically prefer sleeping by themselves or do they prefer the comfort of having another person in the room with them? Either way, Liet still has really really really bad nightmares, but having someone comfortable like Matthew there with him makes him feel a bit better. And, Matty also likes sharing a bed with Liet, even if he does have TERRIBLE, terrible, terrible, nightmares often.
9. does your muse like sharing a bed, or do they prefer to have their own space? Again, Matty doesn’t mind sharing his bed with Liet. And, Liet doesn’t mind sharing a bed with Matty. And again, either way, liet still has reallyyyyyy bad bad bad nightmares often times, but Matty makes him feel a bit better about them.
10. how many pillows does your muse sleep with? are they comfortable with just one or do they like to be cozy? They both love pillows.
11. what type of blanket does your muse prefer (standard blanket, quilt, comforter, weighted blanket, etc)? Liet has a plush weighted blanket. It is colored in mossy green, and reminds slightly of moss. It looks kinda like this (see image below), but thicker because it is weighted.
Though, while Liet absolutely LOVES his comfort moss (weighted) blanket, the one downside is that, when he is having a nightmare that causes him to struggle around a lot, he tends to get trapped underneath it in his sleep!
12. how long does it typically take for your muse to fall asleep? For Liet, it doesn’t actually take long at all! But for Matthew, he will be scrolling the internet for a couple hours at least with Liet already snoozing on his chest, before he falls asleep too.
13. how often does your muse dream? are they mostly pleasant or is their sleep more likely to be filled with nightmares? Well, as you know by now, Liet has bad bad BAD nightmares. Matthew on the other hand, has some really weird Alice-In-Wonderland-esque dreams.
14. does your muse take any sleeping aids (ex. pills, melatonin supplements, etc)? No, not really.
15. how many hours of sleep does your muse typically get? Um.. I don’t know.. If Liet is working still during night, he probably won’t sleep at all. But, often times when he does sleep, he doesn’t sleep well at all 🙁Matthew gets around 7-4 hours of sleep.
16. does your muse wake up in the middle of the night often or can they sleep through the night? Well, usually, Matthew sleeps well until morning, but Liet wakes up in the middle of the night really often, and in a PANIC too. 🙁
17. does your muse like to take naps during the day? how often and for how long? If Liet has a chance to nap and also feels like napping, then maybe, but only maybe. Matthew, on the other hand, naps quite often!
18. does your muse have insomnia? have they ever experienced insomnia? to what degree of severity? No, but they’ve had it before. Liet doesn’t have insomnia, he just suffers severe nightmares. 🙁
19. has your muse ever been diagnosed with any sleep disorders? Well, if it counts, Liet is diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety disorder and PTSD. And, most of his really really REAllY bad nightmares, come from PTSD. They’re PTSD nightmares. 🙁
20. does your muse have any pre-bedtime rituals or routines (like facial care, meditation, shower, medications, etc)? do they have any pre-bedtime activities like reading, playing video games, going on their phone, etc? Well yes, of course. Liet takes some mental health medicines, and then likes to have a scorching hot bath before bed, brush his teeth, clean his face, tie up his curly hair, use the toilet, and watch Matthew scroll on his phone for a little bit before falling asleep.
Matthew takes a shower, combs his hair, washes his face, brushes his teeth, uses the toilet, and then gets into bed to scroll his phone for a while while Liet rests on his chest and watches.
21. does your muse wear a sleep mask? No
22. is your muse sensitive to light while they sleep, or do they not mind it? I wouldn’t say so– though, Liet sometimes drapes an arm over his face to subconsciously block a little extra light from his eyelids.
23. does your muse prefer to sleep in complete silence or hear some kind of background noise? Liet likes a bit of white noises. Not to be cheesy or anything, but by “white noises”, I mean the sound of Matthew’s breathing & heartbeat. Matthew likes ASMR.
24. does your muse listen to music while falling asleep? No, neither of them do this. Matthew may occasionally listen to ASMR, though.
25. are their any conditions in where your muse absolutely cannot fall asleep (ex. bug in the room, temperature, smell, etc)? Liet cannot and will not sleep if he sees a roach or spider in the room, or if it has any heavy smell.
26. does your muse have any odd or atypical sleeping habits? Liet puts his ice-feet on Matthew’s legs, drools, talks, yells, yelps, cries, and fights with the blankets. And, Matthew is a hugger.
27. what does your muse typically like to wear to bed? does it depend on the season/weather outside? Pajamas. It depends on the season, but generally, Liet likes long-sleeved but loose and airy and cool pajamas, and Matthew likes warm pajamas.
28. does your muse tend to wake up with bedhead? YES. Liet especially.
29. does your muse have any routines they follow when they wake up (like makeup, facial care, stretching, shower, medications, etc)? do they have any activities they like to do immediately after waking up? Liet uses the toilet, brushes his teeth, washes his face, puts on his blobfish slippers Matthew gave him as a joke present on his birthday once (it’s ok, he gave him plenty of real, non-joke presents too), and goes to the kitchen to get breakfast. Most mornings, Liet just doesn’t feel like fighting with his hair though :/
Matthew also uses the toilet, brushes his teeth, washes his face, and goes to the kitchen to get breakfast. Except, he doesn’t wear funky blobfish slippers, and he also fixes his hair.
30. how long does it typically take your muse to wake up in the morning? can they make it by without coffee or do they need caffeine? NO.
31. does your muse wake up hungry or do they need some time to feel hungry?Yes. They both wake up hungry.
32. what is your muse's mood like when they wake up? are they grumpy, cheerful, confused, etc? Liet is just tired, but not grouchy. Matthew is a bit disoriented when he first wakes up.
33. when sharing a bed with someone else, is your muse a cuddler? YES.
34. has your muse ever cried themselves to sleep? Liet?? HELL YES. Matthew?? Sometimes.
35. where was the weirdest place your muse has fallen asleep? Liet fell asleep lying on a bed of moss while watching clouds once. Matthew fell asleep while playing the violin once; yes, WHILE he was playing the violin. Bro drifted off while drawing the bow across the strings.
36. has your muse ever fallen asleep or been extremely tired in a situation where it isn't safe to be (ex. while driving)? Tolys definitely fell asleep while floating in water, with some tiny little bait fish nibbling his toes & fingers. At least a few times. Luckily, he did not drown, but it scared the shit out of Mattie to see him snoozing while floating in the water.

As a former background actress can I just say I am so glad the actors are on strike as well?
Like, first off, getting hired then scanned for your likeness for AI to use for eternity is already horrifying but we also deserve better work conditions AI or not.
People always thought I would go into acting and for a long time I wanted to be a professional actress, but after my experiences it put me off forever.
I was a background actress for a film called "Middle School: The Worst Years Of My Life". This production was filmed in Georgia which is a right to work anti-union state. We would work 12-20 hour days 5-7 days a week. Arriving at 3am and being taken by bus away from our cars so we couldn't go home and sometimes not finishing until 12am. We weren't allowed to bring snacks or food and we had to use their crappy lunch service to eat and sometimes, we wouldn't get lunch at all. Some days, we were kept in "holding" all day which was usually a small room filled with all of us background kids without ever touching set. Other days, we would be out in 90 degree heat or freezing weather. We were 13 years old during this production.
There was wadge theft like crazy and kids would get violently ill from the food served and the extremes we were put in. And that's not even the worst of it. You want to know how much I made in total after four months of this bullshit? I broke just $1000.
So all I'm saying is, good job actor's union. We deserve better pay and we deserve better working conditions and AI is not a replacement.

A LATE WOODLAND (EFFIGY MOUND CULTURE) WINTER HOUSE BASIN: Keeping Warm in Frigid Winter
December 2022 brought a true winter blizzard propelled by the weather phenomenon known as a “bomb cyclone.” Below-zero air temperatures and sustained winds of 20-40 mph dropped wind chills to -40 F. Prolonged outdoor exposure was life threatening. Most of us were fortunate to be cocooned in warm dwellings with a predictable heat source and good winter attire. Even so, it was a frightening situation--and for some people, a fatal one. Especially for people in rural settings, in an emergency, help might or might not be on the way.
So how did people survive harsh Midwestern winters centuries ago? The Cade 5 site in Vernon County, Wisconsin, offers an intriguing possibility. The site is attributed to the Effigy Mound culture, an archaeological term for peoples who constructed a stunning array of animal/spirit-shaped burial mounds in western Wisconsin and surrounding areas during Late Woodland times, ca. A.D. 750-1050. Archaeological studies have provided insights into daily lifeways of Effigy Mound related peoples. There is good evidence that they were heavily invested in hunting and gathering wild plant and animal resources (wild rice, fish, and deer) harvested on a seasonal cycle across the landscape. Corn horticulture appears to have developed rather late during this time, and corn is thought to have been a lightly used supplemental resource.
Effigy Mound related peoples sometimes used south- or east-facing rockshelters during cool-season deer harvests and camped along rivers or lakes during the warm season. They probably built houses similar to a traditional Ho-Chunk house type called a ciiporoke (pronounced chee-POE-doe-kay). These rounded, wigwam-style structures, made of bent saplings covered with bark sheets or cattail mats, would have been suitable for a wide range of conditions. (For a photo of a ciparoke, see https://www.wisconsinhistory.org/Records/Image/IM64092.)
A house basin found in 1996 at the Cade 5 site (47Ve643) in Vernon Co., Wisconsin, raises another possibility for winter— a covered, semi-subterranean house that might have served as an emergency shelter during severe cold snaps. An apparent house basin (Feature 3) found beneath the disturbed plowzone soil was 11.5 by 13 feet in area and 30 inches deep. The bottom had fire-cracked rocks, a projectile point, and a few pottery sherds attributable to the Effigy Mound culture. Several feet away was a large hearth (Feature 1), partially excavated in 1995, that contained 600 pounds of burned limestone (dolomite) rock lying on a bed of oak charcoal. Radiocarbon samples dated both Features 1 and 3 to about AD 1000.
The excavator (Jim Theler) was initially unsure about purpose of the basin, but he now thinks it was a winter house for extreme cold weather. It might have had a flat or low dome covering. Hot rocks brought in from the outside hearth would have warmed the interior without the smoke produced by an interior fire. Similar “winter” houses of a “keyhole” design, with long, narrow entryways, were excavated at Late Woodland sites in Dane County, Wisconsin, by the Wisconsin Historical Society.

Devin Katzfey, Wisconsin inmate, born 1996, incarceration intake in 2017 at age 21, sentenced to 27 years, died in custody 09/01/2018 at age 22
Murder
A Milwaukee man convicted of a brutal beating death he recorded on the victim's Snapchat account was just over a year into a 27-year sentence when he killed himself in prison.
His family is suing prison staff they say had ample reason to know Devin Katzfey was suicidal and didn't take actions that could have prevented his death.
"Katzfey’s suicide was not an anomaly," the federal lawsuit states. "It was the product of endemic practices at Columbia (Correctional Institution) — well known to prison supervisors — whereby staff looked at prisoners who harmed themselves with disdain and routinely minimized or ignored requests for help."
After Katzfey tried to overdose on 90 Tylenol tablets, he was returned from the hospital to the same cell in segregation, over his pleas and claims that he was still suicidal. That's where he hung himself early on Sept. 1, 2018. He was 22.
His mother, Natalie Smith, is the personal representative of Katzfey's estate, which is the plaintiff in the case. It names as defendants almost two dozen wardens, supervisors, guards and psychologists who worked for the Department of Corrections.
The suit accuses the officials of violating Katzfey's civil rights by failing to provide proper medical attention, to protect him from himself, to intervene when others were failing in their jobs, and makes a claim of supervisors' liability. It seeks unspecified damages.
Katzfey, his girlfriend and his brother were all convicted in the death of Delvin Mendoza-Chaparro, 20. He had come to visit the trio and smoke marijuana in December 2016, and when Katzfey awoke the next morning, he found paraphernalia in the victim's pocket and accused him of stealing.
Katzfey and his girlfriend beat Mendoza-Chapparro, forced him to eat kitty litter and left him to die in a snowbank in 14-degree weather. Some of the attack had been recorded on the victim's own cellphone.
Sarah Zakzesky, Wisonsin inmate 658222, received 10 years in prison, and Branden Katzfey, Wisconsin inmate 658274, was sentenced to 13 years.
As the leader and recorder of the attack, Devin Katzfey got a 27-year sentence from Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Jeffrey Wagner after pleading guilty to first-degree reckless homicide, as a party to the crime.
He first arrived at Dodge Correctional in May 2017. He was determined to need a mental health assessment and sent to Wisconsin Resource Center, then back to Dodge.
"Katzfey was referred to the Resource Center because prison staff recognized he posed a very serious self-harm and suicide risk, and because he had tried to kill himself by drinking bleach while at the Milwaukee County Jail a few months earlier," the suit states.
After his condition stabilized at WRC, he was returned to Dodge, then sent back to WRC again, then transferred to Columbia Correctional Institution in Portage on June 22, 2017.
According to the suit, "Katzfey’s prison record was replete with evidence of his suicidal ideation, his need for care, and his ability to respond positively to care and accommodations."
On June 4, 2018, as punishment for a disciplinary infraction, Katzfey was sentenced to serve 180 days in segregation.  According to the suit, prison staff dismissed Katzfey’s requests for help as misbehavior, and characterized him as “extremely manipulative” and “narcissistic.”
Katzfey made repeated written requests for help, saying he was depressed, couldn't sleep and was losing weight. In response, he was sent a "self help packet list," but was not seen by a psychologist.
Later in June, Katzfey tried to overdose on Tylenol he had slowly accumulated and hidden in his cell. He spent two nights in a hospital, was returned to segregation and again began asking for more psychological help and to have more phone contact with his family, which was severely restricted in segregation.
He mostly got written responses, but did have one appointment with a prison psychologist on July 17, after writing, “Im having a hard time coping[.] I need to be seen. Its an emergency. I’m beyond depressed. Listen, I’m beyond depressed. I need to talk to a psychologist NOW.”
But after that, he got more written responses, like, "You need to be patient. This is an excellent opportunity to work on developing alternative coping skills. See attached packet.”
On Sept. 1, 2018, Katzfey was found hanging in his cell by a rope braided from bed linen tied to a ceiling vent. The lawsuit states that, given his mental condition, his linens should have been restricted or checked more frequently.

A Surge of Floodwater For Owens Lake California's Owens Lake has been mostly dry since the construction of the Los Angeles Aqueduct in 1913. The project siphoned water from the eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada range and Owens River Valley to the city of Los Angeles, 220 miles (354 kilometers) to the south, drawing down the lake. That changed in March 2023 after floodwaters pooled on the west side of the aqueduct, eroded soil that supported the concrete-lined channel, and contributed to the collapse of three of its sections near Olancha. To drain and repair the damaged section of the aqueduct, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) opened spill gates letting water run downstream. According to news reports, some of that floodwater joined with water from other sources and poured over the lakebed of Owens Lake. Two weeks later, on March 25, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this image (lower image) of Owens Lake. The image is false color, which makes the water (dark blue) stand out from its surroundings. Snow appears light blue and vegetation is green. The image on the left shows the same area in March 2022. This is the first time the Los Angeles Aqueduct has been breached by extreme weather, according to the Los Angeles Times. But it is not the first time the lakebed has flooded since the construction of the aqueduct. Since the early 2000s, LADWP has occasionally flooded parts of the lake with shallow water to prevent dust from becoming airborne and potentially affecting human health. However, the aqueduct’s breach came after an atmospheric river brought 5 to 13 inches of rain to parts of Central California on March 9 and 10. Heavy precipitation in the state in 2023 led to a record amount of snow on the southern Sierra Nevada range (shown in light blue in the image above). Yet, the past three years have been some of California’s driest. Recent research indicates that climate change has made these water cycle extremes more common. Matthew Rodell, a hydrologist based at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, led a recent study that used data from the NASA/German Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and GRACE Follow-On (GRACE-FO) satellites to characterize extreme wet and dry events over the past 20 years. GRACE satellites monitor miniscule, month-to-month changes in Earth’s gravity field that scientists can use to determine where on Earth water is accumulating or diminishing. The researchers ranked 1,056 extreme events during the two-decade period and found that the most intense droughts and wet events were becoming more frequent. During the first 13 years of the study, there was an average of three major extreme wet or dry events per year. Yet between 2015 and 2021, seven of the planet’s 10 warmest years, there was an average of four such extreme events per year. According to Rodell: “What we’re seeing in California—this weather whiplash between extreme dry and wet conditions—is becoming more common as a result of climate change.” NASA Earth Observatory images by Lauren Dauphin, using MODIS data from NASA EOSDIS LANCE and GIBS/Worldview. Ulefone Armor Pad 3 Pro: Durable Tablet with Long Battery
Tumblr media
The Ulefone Armor Pad 3 Pro is a recently released tablet. The individuals who require a device capable of withstanding severe outside weather conditions are the ones responsible for its creation. There is a proposed asking price of $300.
What makes the Ulefone Armor Pad 3 Pro stand out are:
Manufacturer’s specifications indicate that the substantial 33,280mAh battery offers 181 hours of talk time and 1812 hours of standby time.
Water and detritus ingress is prevented by the tablet’s IP68/IP69K certification, which attests to its sturdy construction. Furthermore, with a maximum depth of 1.5 metres, it possesses the ability to remain entirely submerged in water for a period of thirty minutes. Invalidating the product’s resistance to a fall of 1.2 feet, the certification provides additional evidence of its durability.
The Ulefone Armor Pad 3 Pro comes with everything you need, plus a few more. Along with a headphone port, this smartphone boasts 8GB of RAM, 256GB of microSD-expandable storage, a front-facing 8MP camera, a rear-facing 13MP camera, a fingerprint sensor, and a 10.36-inch 1200p display supporting 60Hz refresh rate.
There are a number of things to think about before buying the Ulefone Armor Pad 3 Pro:
Central Processing Unit: The MediaTek MT8788 CPU falls somewhere in the middle of the crowd of chipsets, so it’s not exactly the most powerful choice. If one is required for intensive duties such as video editing or gaming, it may be prudent to consider purchasing an alternative tablet. With a weight of 1.2 kilogrammes, the capsule is not the lightest offered.
So yet, only AliExpress has the Ulefone Armor Pad 3 Pro available for purchase. Only at this market will you be able to find it.
With an extremely large 33,280 mAh battery capacity, the Ulefone Armor Pad 3 Pro stands out among its competitors. An output power of up to 66W is capable of charging it using a USB-C connector. We will celebrate the battery’s outstanding features, such as its 1,812 hours of standby duration and its 181 hours of talk time. Even better, when connected to a wire, it is capable of reverse charging.
The 10.36-inch display on the Ulefone Armor Pad 3 Pro will feature Gorilla Glass 5 protection, a resolution of 1,200p at 60Hz, and a maximum luminance of 500 nits. An LCD, it seems.
One chip that will drive the Armor Pad 3 Pro is the MT8788 from MediaTek. The device will come with 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM, 256GB of UFS 2.2 storage (which can be upgraded to 2TB with a microSD card), and Android 13 preinstalled. Samsung will produce both the front-facing (32 megapixels) and rear-facing (50 megapixels) cameras included with the device.
Two camping lamps with a lumen output of 1,100 are affixed to the rear of the sturdy tablet. The left side of the frame is where you’ll find the dedicated button to switch these lights on and off. In addition, the tablet will ship with an HDMI connector and a customisable key for easy connectivity.
Aside from its Near Field Communication (NFC) capabilities, the Ulefone Armor Pad 3 Pro has a fingerprint scanner that is attached to its side and supports dual-SIM LTE connectivity. Certifications for MIL-STD-810H and IP68/IP69K will be included, and it will weigh approximately 1.2 kilogrammes.
As part of the retail package, you will receive a screwdriver and a hand strap with the Ulefone Armor Pad 3 Pro. Despite this, the company will supply a variety of tablet accessories, such as a cordless Bluetooth speaker, a multi-function bag, and a flexible stand.
Approximately $300 (or €280 or INR25,010) will be the price tag when the Ulefone Armor Pad 3 Pro hits AliExpress on May 13.
Users looking for a tough tablet that can handle tough conditions can consider the Ulefone Armor Pad 3 Pro. The weight and processing power constraints are still factors to think about.
Armor Pad 3 Pro availability and pricing
It has been speculated that the Ulefone Armor Pad 3 Pro could be made available for purchase at some point in May of 2024; however, there has been no official confirmation of this as of yet. The anticipated cost is somewhere about $300.
Ulefone Armor Pad 3 Pro features

2024 Texas Hurricane Season Predictions
2024 Texas Hurricane Season Predictions
Tumblr media
Predictions Show a Very Active Hurricane Season
Tumblr media
Texans well know about the damaging high winds and flash flooding from tropical storms. This year's TX hurricane predictions show a very active season. Learn why this season could be one of the toughest.
Apart from hot summers, one thing Texans know all too well about is hurricane season. Flooded streets, damaged roofs, and your Texas electricity is out. Towns hit hard in the past like Rockport, Port Arthur, Houston and others shudder when skies darken over the Gulf of Mexico. This season's hurricane predictions look like it could be another tough one.
Officially, the Atlantic hurricane season begins on June 1 and runs through the end of November. But due to the potential for global economic disruptions from these powerful storm systems, everyone wants to know how to prepare well in advance.
AccuWeather's March 27 forecast warns of an "explosive season" where forecasters may even run out of names.
Tropical Storm Risk (TSR), which makes forecasts in December, released their updated prediction on April 8.
Colorado State University researchers released their annual hurricane forecast on April 8, also.
NOAA's Climate Prediction Center (CPC) usually releases forecasts in late May.
Given this past year's record warm temperatures and a La Niña expected to emerge in the Pacific Ocean, these weather services now expect "a very active" hurricane season ahead.
Are Hurricane Predictions Accurate?
Bear in mind that storm predictions are based on the probability for the environment to spin up tropical storms. So, predicted storm numbers are not iron-clad. But while some year's predict too many; in the past 30 years, we're seeing predictions fall short. For example, the 2023 hurricane season forecast only 13 tropical storms. But due exceptional warm sea surface temperatures, there were 20 and it became the fourth most active season on record. Dire-sounding, true but of the 20 tropical storms that formed, only three made landfall in North America. Several stayed at sea and disipated as they wandered north.
However, there have been more extremely active hurricane seasons since 1995 than there has been since 1900. And two of the most active seasons occurred in 2005 with 28 storms and 2020 with 30 -- eleven of which made landfall in the US causing $37 billion in damage.
With all that in mind, the 23 tropical storms predicted this year is twice as many tropical storms that occur during a statistically "normal" season. And this makes the consensus for the potential number of storms compelling. As we'll see, conditions going into the 2024 season have more in common with 2020 than last year.
Why So Many Storms?
Tropical storm systems need three things to spin up:
LOTS of calm, warm water. Sea surface temperatures (SSTs) at least 80°F (26.5°C) to a depth of about 150 feet.
Dry, thirsty air. When a firm, dry trade wind blows across warm sea water (at about 11 mph), it has an easy time evaporating that water and taking on its heat. As this warm, humid air begins to move upwards and organize, it can quickly develop into a moist and unstable atmosphere that supports sustained shower and thunderstorm activity.
A nice, calm upper atmosphere. Tropical storms like winds that move horizontally and spiral up in nice, stacked layers (stack of pancakes). Vertical winds that cut or shear across that horizontal structure can tear it apart. Wind shearing happens everywhere but as long as it's about 23 mph from the ocean surface all the way up to around 60,000 feet, the tropical storm will be fine.
The ENSO (El Niño/Southern Oscillation) also plays a role. To be clear, El Niño, ENSO Neutral, and La Niña don’t prevent or cause hurricanes. Rather, it is an ocean-atmosphere system at the equator in the Pacific Ocean that can shift atmosphere's circulation (called the "Walker Circulation"). El Niños usually produce wind shears in the Atlantic that blow apart tropical storms or shift them to the middle of Atlantic (as we saw in 2023). ENSO Neutral and La Niñas, however, shift those wind-shear patterns far to the east, leaving a nice, calm upper atmosphere over the Atlantic where tropical storms develop.
Current Conditions
This past February saw record global temperatures, especially in the Atlantic Ocean. Currently, sea surface temperatures remain warm. In fact, there's a band of 80°F (26.5°C) water stretching all way from west Africa to the west coast of Cuba. All three hurricane predictions cite warmer than normal SSTs as a reason for more storms. And given NOAA's temperature predictions for the summer, it looks like much of the US Atlantic coast will stay like bathwater. That may sound like good news for beach goers (and sharks) but it's also perfect for building tropical storms.
There is a lot of dry air coming off the African west coast. Actually, too much right now. The Saharan Air Layer (SAL) lies about 5,000 and 20,000 feet up in the sky that transports plumes of dry, dust-laden air from west Africa to as far west as Texas. It usually forms in the late spring/early summer when hot dry winds blow across the Sahara desert and move over the Atlantic Ocean. As result the SAL can impede tropical storm formation:
Big dust plumes can warm the atmosphere but block sunlight from warming the ocean surface below. That reduces evaporation.
The dry air can create down drafts or sinking air. These can interfere with moist air rising and organizing into low pressure systems.
SAL winds are strong enough to carry dust. So, their winds can also produce vertical wind shears that blow out storm formation.
Although the SAL begins in the spring it don't blow all summer long. All the same, in both 2022 and 2023, the SAL helped keep a lid on storm formation for about 2 months. The pattern peaks in June and fades in early August. Each plume usually last 3 to 5 days. But once the SAL pattern ends, a warm ocean can spin up a storm in only a few days, if not hours.
All three hurricane predictions also cite the weakening El Niño. This shows that sea surface temperatures in the middle of the Pacific Ocean at the equator are getting cooler. NOAA predicts that they expect ENSO Neutral conditions between April and June. Already, cooler water temperatures as deep as 200 feet are being detected in the eastern Pacific. So change is coming.
While ENSO Neutral means there's no giant mass of warm or cold water in the Pacific affecting the atmosphere, it allows other atmospheric conditions to exert a bigger influence on hurricane seasons. From 2016 through 2020, summer time ENSO Neutral conditions produced some of the most active hurricane seasons on record. In fact, some of the biggest and deadliest storms to hit the US occurred during ENSO Neutral conditions: Hurricane Harvey (2017), Hurricanes Katrina and Rita (2005), and Tropical Storm Alison (2001).
NOAA predicts 70% to 80% chance for La Niña will emerge in August. Again, all three hurricane predictions suggest a La Niña can produce conditions that spawn the most tropical storms will most likely align. And in many ways, this suggests similarities to the 2020 season.
Hurricane season 2020 also began with above average sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic. Trade winds were weak across most of the Atlantic. ENSO Neutral was firmly in place and would slowly turn into La Niña by autumn; so there was little wind shear. Some tropical storms first formed at a liesurely pace from mid-May to June. But in mid-July, storm systems began forming in bursts.  The most occured in September. At one point there were five named storms spinning in the Atlantic. All told, 2020 saw 30 tropical storms. Eleven struck the US; six of them were hurricanes.
So August and September could be dangerously busy.

Learn what's driving hurricane predictions this summer and what you need to know to stay safe.
Predictions for a Hurricane Hitting the US in 2024
Because hurricanes are creatures of heat, water, and wind they are reliably unpredictable. Once they spin up we can only guess where they probably will go. After all, these storm systems form in an area that stretches from the west coast of Africa all the way to the western shore of the Gulf of Mexico.  That said, given the number and potential strength of the storms forecast and the things that sustain their formation, it's logical to anticipate a few coming ashore. But, predicting just how many with any accuracy is a dicey gamble.
While weather services do their best to tease details out of the hundred or so years of record keeping, most won't forecast the number and locations of landfalls.
NOAA predictions usually don't predict landfalls.
CSU also does not predict the number of landfalls but estimates probability. For example, this year, they estimate a 62% chance for a storm making landfall somewhere along the the entire (Atlantic) US coastline.
Accuweather forecast that the US will see 4-6 direct impacts.
TSR says 4.6 tropical storms or hurricanes will come ashore.
One other important thing to remember here is that electricity prices in Texas could surge if tropical storms shut down off-shore natural gas production in the Gulf of Mexico. Some natural gas platforms are located more than 100 miles from shore.
Tropical Storms - What Are the Biggest Dangers?
Tropical storms and hurricanes can unlease three dangerous events: storm surges, high winds, and flooding.
Coastal residents face the greatest danger from storm surges. Because of increasingly higher tides, storm surges are now more likely to cause flooding in any coastal city, including those in major bays and estuaries. Texas and other Gulf coast states have seen past storm surges as high a 10 to 24 feet deep that move inland for miles. So residents living on the coast will face a good chance of needing to evacuate at some point this summer.
Because water and heat fuel these storms, they lose power once they move inland. That doesn't mean they're any less dangerous. For those who live further inland, high winds, tornados, and flooding are all potential dangers. Weakened cyclones can turn into slow moving storm systems that dump enormous amounts of rain as they go. This makes flash flooding more likely and extremely dangerous in areas like central and west Texas.

Banka Bioloo: The company Supporting Access To Clean Sanitation in Rural India
Tumblr media
The climate crisis is heightening inequalities. Vulnerable populations on the frontlines of climate impacts are often those already suffering from difficult living conditions, such as poverty and limit access to natural resources. For instance, water scarcity and extreme weather events such as droughts and heat waves, can exacerbate disparities and impede access to water and sanitation, directly increasing the risk of water contamination and proliferation of pathogens and diseases.
To date, in India alone, around 50 million people continue to be unable to access proper sanitation. In rural India, only 50% of schools have adequate toilets for boys and girls affecting access to education. Moreover, lack of sanitation disproportionately impacts children under two years old, who account for 13% of all deaths per year by diarrhoea linked to water-borne diseases caused by poor sanitation and open-air defecation.
The climate crisis and its effects on water scarcity is already impeding advancement of sanitation that relies on traditional resource-consuming sewage infrastructure. Despite the magnitude of the challenge, the social enterprise Banka Bioloo, partner to Resilience First and Race to Resilience, is determined to reach remote India with sanitation using innovative climate-friendly technology.
The Banka Bioloo bio-toilets are affordable, easy to install, required very little maintenance and have a life span of 35 years. The bio-toilets consist of a bio-digester tank attached to a toilet seat with a pre-fabricated shelter. One single Bio-toilet can reduce 90% of solid waste as it does not require a septic tank or external sewage, while at the same time is capable of generating recycled water suitable for gardening, and colourless, odourless biogas that can be used as energy for activities like cooking or heating.
Banka Bioloo has installed 10,000 bioloos in 22 Indian states over the last eight years and has made a core part of its purpose to increase the education of people through capacity-building programs that build the understanding of the nexus between good hygiene, health and the environment.
“Our bio-digester technology makes it possible for users to manage waste on site and reduce dependency on resource-consuming sewage infrastructure while decreasing the risk of sanitation-related diseases” Banka Bioloo
The company is also championing efforts to improve the quality of life and dignity of children. Banka Bioloo has provided 1,500 schools with bio-toilets across India. This support has led to an increase in health conditions for school children, the reduction of waterborne diseases, a major cause of mortality among children, and the increase in school attendance of girls during their menstruation cycle, as adequate access to sanitation allows female students to better manage their menstrual health.
“The biggest opportunities for value creation must include developing sustainable strategies and outcomes”. Sanjay Banka, Executive Chairman Banka BioLoo Limited.
