actually before starting s2 I rewatched s1 finale, and I'm insane about how Wesley took the prophecy that said Angel was going to die.
He and Cordy were sad and worried, but Wesley quickly took on the approach that there was nothing they could do about it, "it's written in a prophecy, of course it's going to happen no matter what we do", so he just kept re-reading it hoping he interpreted it wrong. He didn't even believe they could do something to cheer Angel up, "he is like that, it is what it is".
Meanwhile, Cordy was the completely opposite, she got angry with him "you go around boring everyone with your scrolls and then say there's nothing we can do?"
In a way, his attitude is a reflection of his low self-esteem and how he was raised to obey authority and the rules no matter what. In a mix of feeling like he shouldn't try to change it and feeling like he is unable to make a difference, he won't even try, even if that's what he wants.
I'm insane about it cuz I don't think this Wesley would have taken Connor! He just wouldn't have had the confidence to! But during this season and the next Wesley gains a lot of confidence: he takes charge of the investigations, he gets better at fighting, he is shot and get back up! And he is inspired by Angel, Cordy and Gun a lot, people who constantly go against "the rules" if it means doing something good.
So even this good thing Angel did: inspiring people to do good defying the rules, was a big part of why Conor was taken from him 🤪
