i'm watching a kurt cobain docu and he's kinda autistic.

disclaimer, this is just for funnsies, i'm not actually diagnosing him, obviously. just some things in common with autistic people. some might just be adhd things (which he's diagnosed with, according to the internet), since they're so comorbid, they might be a little confused in my head

didn't like his schedule broken (insisted his family did the usual weekend game night even when his family wasn't in the mood)

liked the games but only when he won (seemed insensitive to others)

the internet says he was diagnosed w adhd. autism and adhd often go together

didn't know how to make his family to like him

doesn't understand relationships (the situation with the girl w a learning disability)

didn't understand at all that [the girl who later became his girlfriend] had a crush on him - bad at reading social cues?

his girlfriend Tracy said that she nurtured him, was sort of motherly to him, that she helped him mature (and autistics are often considered immature)

it was difficult for him to keep a job

in this one video he was preparing for a concert and asked his friends to be in the first row, so he wouldn't be looking at strangers and literally said "i dislike strangers"

Plan Incliné de Saint-Louis-Arzviller

This is going to be a rather long post as there is a lot to say about this thing! But the short version is: this is a boat lift.

Built in the 1960s, this "inclined plane" was designed to carry barges as part of the fluvial coal transportation industry. However, that trade declined pretty much during the edifice's construction, and today, it almost exclusively serves leisure boats. But if you're going to do a canal cruise, this thing gives it quite the difference!

Its function is that of a lock, taking boats from the lower water level to the higher level, or vice-versa, but it does this by technically being a lift or elevator. A caisson carries the boats and the water up and down, using counterweights to ease the travel.

In fact, the caisson will take on more or less water in order to be heavier or lighter than the counterweights. Though the total mass of the caisson and counterweights is enormous, the difference in mass between them isn't, so very little power is needed to get the system moving, and gravity does most of the work. Two relatively modest electric motors (centre of photo below, steps to the right for scale) start the movement and control the speed.

As such, the system uses comparatively little power, for impressive results. The boat lift was built to bypass a "ladder" of 17 locks which required a whole day to go through, while the travel time of the lift is just 4 minutes. The ride is seamless and very comfortable, effortless even, for reasons mentioned above but also because the effort is distributed across 5 times as many cables as physically required to hold everything together!

Water-tightness is also extremely important, not just for the caisson obviously, but also for the other doors, particularly the top door, which is holding back a whole length of canal. A serious incident in 2013 has led to further reinforcement of redundancies and the construction of an emergency dam closer to the lift in the event of major leaks.

With a lot of freight traffic in mind, the structure was actually designed for two caissons, side-by-side, as evidenced by a second gate hole visible at the top of the ramp (4th picture), and extra space at the bottom, visible in the final picture below. Doubling the caissons would have meant doubling the counterweights, and a second set of rails were laid for that scenario and are visible in the 4th picture. As mentioned earlier, demand dwindled as the lift was being built, so it never operated with two caissons.

For a long time, this place was a childhood memory, visited during a school trip. In my hiking spree after the 2020 and 2021 lockdowns, I sought this place out again and was glad to see it was still working. And just this week, I returned with my parents and rode the lift! It's without doubt one of my favourite pieces of engineering.

Atsumu, terrified at the prospect of dinner with Kiyoomi's very traditional parents for the first time, desperately calls Osamu for help. Osamu, completely clueless about old customs himself, forwards him a link to a website on British monarchical traditions.

The dinner is at Kiyoomi's parents' penthouse in the heart of Tokyo, and there are a couple of sharply dressed middle-aged men standing in front of the imposing double doors.

Oh god, Atsumu thinks. His worst fears from bingeing The Crown the night before are coming true.

"Quick, Omi," he mutters under his breath. "Who's the head of your family? Your mom or your dad?"

"Huh?" Kiyoomi only has time to throw him a quizzical look before the housekeepers- nay, footmen- throw the doors to the dining room open and announce their arrival.

The dining room is high-ceilinged and overlooks Tokyo, a sea of lights from the shiny glass windows. Atsumu is sure that the gleaming crystal chandelier costs ten years of his salary.

Kiyoomi's parents are already seated at the table, both of them in pressed suits. Kiyoomi's mother is seated at one end of the rectangular table, and her husband is seated beside her. They both smile as Kiyoomi and Atsumu walk in.

A matriarch, then, Atsumu thinks, grimly. He turns in the direction of Kiyoomi's mother and sinks into a curtsy.

"Ma'am," he says gravely. He does not rise from the ground, and keeps his gaze fixed downwards. After all, Netflix has taught him well.

And yet Kiyoomi's mother does not motion for him to stand. Atsumu's thighs are pro-athlete standard, and are definitely not aching. Was this some kind of test? Did all of Kiyoomi's boyfriends get this treatment, or was he singled out because of his comparatively humble background? He didn't count on Crazy Rich Asians coming to life, but-

Then Kiyoomi is yanking him upwards. "What the hell are you doing?" he hisses.

"Payin' my respects," Atsumu whispers back. "'Samu said that I'd be beheaded if I-"

Then he realises that Kiyoomi's parents are hiding their barely concealed mirth behind their hands. "What did I say about watching dramas before bedtime?" Kiyoomi admonishes.

Ah. Well. Atsumu still wants to flee the country, but now for a very different reason.

Kiyoomi's father lets out a huge guffaw, and then Kiyoomi is laughing, too, and Atsumu thinks that he'd gladly embarrass himself ten times over if he could make him laugh like that every day.

The rest of the dinner is smooth sailing, with Kiyoomi's parents being completely endeared by what they call Atsumu's "boyish charm". Atsumu claims that it'd been his plan the whole time, and Kiyoomi rolls his eyes but squeezes his hand under the table.

bonus: Atsumu, having been put on the planet for the purpose of making his brother's life miserable, tells Osamu that the website is right. Osamu, when meeting Suna's parents for the first time, pulls exactly the same move to equally disastrous results.

The rest of this chapter is under the read more, but can be skipped/ come back to. It is a slow start and I just don't believe it is interesting enough for a first time reader. It gives a bit of insight on the dwarves personalities, and includes a short segment on explaining how a teleport rune works.
