Monaco plays host to probably the most famous of any Formula 1 race each year but, perhaps unsurprisingly for a microstate of less than 40,000 people, it doesn’t have a history of producing its own successful Formula 1 drivers. Louis Chiron won his home race in 1931 but since his last participation in 1958 (the oldest ever F1 driver at 58), only Olivier Beretta in 1994 has represented Monaco in an F1 race. Clivio Piccione and Stefano Coletti have won in GP2 since then, but didn’t make it to the top level.

Charles Leclerc is only 17 but he is probably Monaco’s best chance yet of repeating Chiron’s home streets victory. A long-time protege of F1 driver manager Nicolas Todt, Leclerc was a star in karting and has had no trouble adapting to single-seaters, impressing in Formula Renault 2.0 last year and now taking up the mantle of being the star rookie in European F3. A winner on his debut at Silverstone, he added a second victory at Hockenheim last weekend and is just five points off the standings lead.

A quick history (so far)

Leclerc’s father Herve was a Formula 3 driver in the 1980s, and Charles began karting at the circuit owned by Philippe Bianchi, the father of Jules. Working his way up the ranks, Leclerc was French was French cadet champion in 2009 and the runner-up in KF3 and the Monaco Junior Kart Cup winner in 2010.

The following year, he claimed a CIK-FIA double, winning the Academy Trophy and the KF3 World Cup. Moving up to KF2 for 2012, Leclerc triumphed in the WSK Euro Series and took second in the European and U18 championships.

Together with Max Verstappen, Leclerc took part in the KZ gearbox classes for his final year in karting in 2013, winning the Winter Cup and finishing second to his Dutch rival in the world championship.

Leclerc entered Formula Renault 2.0 for his rookie single-season season, embarking on the Alps series for Fortec Motorsports. He quickly became a frontrunner, making the podium at round two at Pau and then twice again at Spa. At Monza he won both races, and followed that with more podiums to secure second place in the championship behind third-year FR2.0 racer Nyck de Vries.

Some of Leclerc’s most impressive performances last year came in Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 as a guest entry. He took part in six races and finished second in the last three of those, up against lots of drivers with multiple years of experience in the series.

He could have made the full-time move to the Eurocup for 2015 but instead stepped up to Formula 3, and after testing for several different teams, signed with Van Amersfoort Racing. He would essentially replace Verstappen as team leader, working with the same engineer Rik Vernooij.

Leclerc was rapid in testing and demonstrated his pace on his debut weekend at Silverstone, scoring a double position and winning the final race of the weekend. At round two at Hockenheim he extended his podium streak to five consecutive races, and defeated F3 veteran Felix Rosenqvist in a battle for victory in the wet in race three.

Up next

Leclerc is just five points behind championship leader Antonio Giovinazzi, and so far he’s only raced on circuits he hadn’t competed at before. Next up on the calendar are Pau, Monza and Spa, and he tasted success at all of those last season. Therefore, it stands to reason that there’s yet more to come from Leclerc.

It’s a long season (there are 33 races) and plenty could happen between now and the F3 paddock returning to Hockenheim on the weekend of Leclerc’s 18 birthday in October. But based upon the first two rounds, there’s no reason to think of Leclerc as anything other than a serious title threat. Beating the more experienced Rosenqvist and Giovinazzi – driving for bigger teams in Prema and Carlin respectively – will take some doing, but he’s already given them a hard time. Anyway, his season’s hardly going to be a failure if he loses out and finishes up third as a rookie.

Off-track

No doubt assisted by the Bianchis’ tutelage, Leclerc signed with Todt Jr’s All Road Management firm in 2011. At present, Leclerc has no ties to F1 teams, but through his work with Felipe Massa, Pastor Maldonado and Bianchi, Todt has dealt with most of them and will be very well-placed to get his protege a role when the time comes.

A potential stumbling point is that most F1 teams are already overflowing with some serious sub-F1 prospects, but if he continues to impress as he’s doing at the moment, they could begin falling over each other to find a space for him.

Funding-wise, Leclerc benefits from partners usually tied to Todt’s projects, and watch maker Richard Mille (currently a sponsor of the Lotus F1 team) is his loyal main backer. And you’d imagine that being billed as a future F1 star from Monaco could well tempt some further future investment.

Verdict

In just his second season in single-seaters, Leclerc is quickly marking himself out as a star of the future with fine performances and two wins in his first couple of weekends in European F3, making him seriously stand out from a large and competitive grid.

While he’s got plenty in common with his old karting rival and Van Amersfoort F3 predecessor Verstappen, a lesser reputation and sensible management mean he’s unlikely to be making the jump straight up to F1 next year. He will therefore need to sustain this impressive form into an intermediate category like GP2 in order to make the grade.

But the signs are definitely there that Leclerc is one of the very top talents in the junior ranks right now, and that he’s capable of tasting success in F1 in the future.

His lifelong friend Bianchi was so sadly stopped in his tracks last year just when his F1 future was looking promising. In a few years’ time, Leclerc could just pick up where his mentor left off.

However, he asserts that because Avatar is based on historical events, it is appropriate to consider race in casting. The science fiction genre allows greater freedom to explore these issues in unique ways. Avatar's comparison to other movies outside the science fiction genre relates to how these other films adapted historical events with creativity and clarity.  

Adapting the history of colonization doesn't excuse ableism. To survive on  Pandora, humans need to be in Avatar bodies that are bigger and stronger (not just blue.) This dependence on Avatars on such a harsh planet highlights the requirement for the elimination of disabled people on Pandora. "Shrouded in larger discourses surrounding colonialism, environmental collapse,  and Utopia, Avatar makes a complicated argument, when considered through  the lenses of eco-criticism and disability studies together, about the potential to  inhabit environments being predicated upon able-bodiedness." Alcohol - 10 drinks, the highest so far. Was actually surprised when I looked that up. 4 beers on New Year's Eve, my last beers until the race. Doing red wine only in Jan, no alcohol in Feb. Had 2 glasses of red wine on New Year's Day, 1 glass the next day, 3 straight days of no drinking, then 3 glasses of red wine on Saturday while cooking dinner and watching football. I have to drink less if I want to lose weight, but hopefully I don't have to think too deeply about this, going red wine only should naturally solve for this (though I just had 6 glasses of red wine in 6 days, so who knows).

The Basics

First, you need to understand that there's a variety of so-called canons. There's an anime canon, a manga canon, a drama cd canon, a musical canon, and then some other random things that you can't really call canon but exist: such as games, radio shows, tv stuff not written by the author, etc.

All of these canons and non-canon stuff are fine, and you can enjoy them as much as you want, but they're NOT the source material. Source material are only the novels and stories that have been written by Takabayashi-sensei (anything in written form and some dramas also written by her according to interviews).

Takabayashi-sensei is the author of the novels (the source material out of which everything else is derived), and her word is "god's word". By the way, she used this term to refer to herself in regards to the maruma series, I'm not fangirling, but using terminology she herself used.

Please understand that most of the material that isn't 'source material' has been altered in many ways to appeal to a 'larger audience' (manga and drama cds), or to make it palatable to the more homophobic society of the 2000s (in the case of the anime). When the anime began social media didn't exist. And when the anime ended (in 2009), social media was in its infancy. That's how long ago these media were adapted from source material.

The Fandom

The fandom has influenced the source material itself at times (such as Conrad fans throwing a hissy fit when he died in novel 5 to the point that Takabayashi-sensei had to resurrect him and change who the key was and many other plot points since then). Certain shippers still force sensei's hand to write fanservice here and there, and despite that, one thing has been clear from the beginning:

Takabayashi-sensei's 'main couple' is the one she got engaged back in novel 1: Yuuri and Wolf, the royal couple.

The Bias

Before we get into the thick of this, let's take a moment to understand bias. I'm sure that if you're reading this far into this you really like yuuram and don't have a problem with homosexuality, boys love, etc. (I use yuuram to mean the royal couple: Yuuri and Wolf, nothing to do with 'who's on top' or anything like that, just a name for the ship with these two characters).

Despite that, anyone reading this has been born and raised in a highly hetero-normative society where if a girl so much looks at a boy she must be into him, and vice-versa.

Who can forget the "He was a boy, She was a girl, Can I make it any more obvious" lyrics of the 2000s? Same applies to 'ships' all across the board.

If any, and I mean any 'boy-girl' relationship was 10% of what the yuuram relationship is, there wouldn't be a single doubt that those two are in love, dating, married, and living happily ever after.

But when it comes to Yuuri and Wolf it feels like pulling teeth to get people to accept that they’re in a relationship. I blame mostly the anime for including weird non-canon ideas into fans minds, as well as heteronormative societies.

The Royal Couple

Begin by forgetting everything you consumed from other canons (TV, manga, fanfics) if you truly want to appreciate the Royal Couple in its source material form.

1) Romantic interest

The source material has made Yuuri very interested in Wolfram since the very beginning. Of course, at first, he was only interested in Wolfram's physical appearance. But the more he got to know Wolfram the more he cared about him and the less he cared about his physical appearance.

To get a full picture of how madly he falls for Wolf, you need to read the novels, but here are some excerpts to illustrate my point:

"Even if our bodies are evenly matched, when I just glanced up, I've already been defeated. How can he be this beautiful! (どうよ、この美しさ！) At the same time, his head is emitting an aura. Although it's likely that it seemed that way because of his dazzling blond hair. His looks and voice are like an older Vienna chorus boy. His white skin seems transparent, and his irises are an emerald green that make me think of the bottom of a lake, and furthermore he doesn't have a split chin. He's an angel, definitely an angry angel. However, because he's in this place, he's probably a beautiful demon."

-> Yuuri writes a fucking sonnet in his head about Wolf's beauty when they meet.

 From the far side of the corridor, the blond with wavy hair comes running. The intense navy blue uniform suits him; the mazoku Prince Wolfram. I muttered in a sigh 'Although he's a man, he's this beautiful, Günter'.

-> Yuuri complains to Gunter that Wolf is too beautiful.

As for the humanoid ones, there are regular looking ones like me or Conrad, but there are also some who are super beautiful like Günter or Wolfram............. as for the last one, this is just a little bit of my own personal bias, but it makes no difference if he's beautiful or not."

-> Yuuri saying that the beauty he went head over heals in novel 1 for, doesn't matter to him anymore because of his 'personal bias'

I thought about this, literally with my hands on his chest. In fact, with my hand, that was pressed against his chest, I could feel that the speed of my partner's and my heartbeat was the same. Anyone would get blood rushing to their brains when they're seriously thinking about something. When I could calm down a little, I let out a small sigh.

"Or rather, when it comes to things that I can give you, I would give you anything, Wolf."

-> Yuuri tells Wolfram he would give him anything in the world.

2) Sexual interest:

-There are several times when the source material implies that Yuuri and Wolf don't just sleep at night.

Again, please remember that in the novels Greta does not sleep with Yuuri and Wolfram. This was a TV addition to appease homophobic minds. In fact, in the novels, Yuuri forbade Greta from sleeping with them because she's 'too old'. Also source material Greta is rarely in Shin Makoku as she's studying abroad half the time.

"If I leave it up to you, it will never get settled."

"So, what kind of settlement do you want...?" My voice trails off as he sways his hips closer.

The former mazoku prince's face brightens and he pulls me down by the arm.

"Wah!"

"So you finally feel like settling things!?"

I'm scared to think about what sort of settlement this is. I'm not going to lose my life or anything, but I do feel like there's something else I'm going to lose. I desperately extract myself, fly into the bathroom and lock the door.

"Yuuri!"

"Wait wait wait! I gotta take a bath first, okay!? You don't wanna do it with a sweaty guy, right!?"

Do it...? I blanch at my own words.

-> Yuuri's subconscious is clearly working against him.XD It looks like Yuuri doesn't want to lose the v-card yet (he barely knows Wolf at this point), but he still says  to Wolf he should take a bath before they do it. Gambare, Yu-chan

-> Yuuri and Wolfram have been sleeping together for 3 months at the beginning of novel 4! Please! If this was a guy and girl you wouldn't be wondering what they're doing! He has a lock on the door! He can keep Wolf out , order him out, but he never does. Don’t be the gray haired lady!

- "As a measure against Wolfram, who somehow even on our trips sleeps in the same bed as I do, I made a wall with three pillows which also had cute egg shaped buttons. I tucked my shirt into my pants, so that my stomach wouldn't get cold. After all, in the mornings when I woke up, both my clothes and my sleeping posture were always preposterous."

-> Yuuri says he puts some pillows to avoid getting into the weird sleeping postures and getting his clothes messed up and shirt untucked, but he never thinks of 'not sleeping with Wolf'~

- "While watching Wolfram's cheeks get red in excitement, a surprised Josak swallowed the question" You even sleep together when you're out on a trip?".

-> Even Jozak (the spy who's supposed to know everything) seems surprised that they're "sleeping together all the time". They're clearly hiding it from people.

Takabayashi-sensei replied to a question about Yuuri and Wolfram and what would happen once they get married... and she said it clearly: They'll have sex.

"Rather than while you were sleeping, before going to sleep?"

"You mean like, when I do practice baseball swings naked or something?"

"Yeah, naked practice."

"Or maybe like, a picture of Wolf's butt when he's wearing his sexy negligee or something?"

"Ah! If a picture of it peeking out is released it would be bad, huh?"

"Then, I suddenly realized that "secret" might just be a hook. In other words, those trick titles that often appear in sports newspapers."

"Yes, yes."

-> Yuuri talks about Wolfram's butt showing as a common place and about himself being completely naked doing 'baseball practice' in the room with Wolf, whatever that may mean.

3) Illustrations

The 4 wedding pictures. Yuuri and Wolfram have been illustrated as married four times by the series' illustrator:

And I like to add this fifth one (used in There's Valentine's Day in Shin Makoku!? DVD special), since in the black and white version, there's a comment by Takabayashi-sensei that says: "With this we've finally won against the anime team! ", meaning they beat them to the wedding. 

4) Terminology

Yuuri and Wolf are referred to in tweets by Takabayashi-sensei, GEG-san and Temari-sensei as the Royal Couple (ロイカプ). The author, editor and illustrator all know already what they are and that's why they call them that.

Please, please read the source material. But if you won't, at least read some of the analyses I've made to find out more about yuuram. Yuuram is here, it’s canon, and their ship has sailed a long time ago, in novel 1. They were always meant to end up together and they have. (”The dream ending” was how the author wanted yuuram to end, happily married). This isn't clickbait, or fanwork. The author likes the Royal couple and will see that they end up together no matter what.

Hello! For the first Destiel fic post 😊

The first Destiel fic I bookmarked the was the Forth Wall series by Entanglednow, which is lovely and funny. I first started watching the show in 2013 (end of season 7 on UK tv I think?). The first Destiel fics that made me really fall in love with them were probably All Things Shining by askance and standbyme (which is one of my favourite things I’ve ever read - fic or otherwise) and the Holy!Dean series by bunnymaccool.

(from part 1)  Dean Winchester has grown used to God dicking around in his life the last couple years. But this crap? This takes the CAKE … or pie, rather. Now he’s been thrown a whole new curve-ball. The kind that has ended the Civil War in Heaven … but resulted in Raphael taking over, and hunting for Dean’s ass on a silver platter. Not to mention dealing with Balthazar acting like a self-righteous prick, Sam having some big damn epiphany on his big brother’s sexuality, and Cas eying him up like he’s the world’s juiciest cheeseburger. All that mixed with the chance to fix it all and set everything to rights … but only if Dean is willing to sacrifice himself. Again. Seriously, if he ever meets that bastard God he’s gonna- … oh hey, Chuck! What are you doing here?

The first fic I read was All Things Shining by askance and the first fic I did fanart for was A Little Inspiration by Nadiahart. I found the former when I googled free fiction for kindle (I was on maternity leave and bored!) and fell into a Destiel fic rabbit hole. I then did the art for the latter and accidently met the author via a Destiel discord server (a fellow Angel in Profound Bond 😍) and now she's one of my best friends! I squeed, she squeed, we all squeed.

My life full of these two dumbasses hasn't been the same since. ♥

This was it, it was perfect. Exactly what he needed for his final project. Castiel ripped the page out of the campus life newspaper, tossed his paint brushes back into their cup and raced out of his studio. Checking his watch as he rounded the quad, if he hurried he’d be just in time to catch Dean. Sure enough Dean was exiting the gymnasium still in his baseball uniform as Castiel staggered to a halt in front of him. “Woah, Cas, what’s up man?” Dean asked as he helped Castiel back up from where he was hunched over gripping his knees and panting for air. “D...Dean, I-- I--it's perfect.” He gasped holding out the clipping towards Dean.

It was S8 and I'd finally "seen" Destiel (after watching since s4) so I went to a friend I knew shipped it and asked her what I should read first, and that was her recommendation. My first Destiel fic was Real Slick Dean by Trilliath, and it was also the event horizon fic that dragged me into fandom in S8. It was written by a friend, but I put off reading it for a few months because I knew I'd never look back at my old fandoms, and I was right. It was also my first omegaverse, so it opened 2 new worlds for me. I was already in love with the ship before I read the fic because I started watching in s6, but I didn't know there was a Destiel fandom. I was a real newbie :)

There’s a new alpha enhancer drug “Rutter” on the streets that gets used at “exclusive parties” for the worst purposes. Detective Castiel Novak and his partner Balthazar work hard to put a stop to it and other sex crimes in their work as Special Victim’s top detectives. Ellen Harvelle’s Roadhouse is both a bar and a refuge for unmated Omegas. The Roadhouse gives Omegas the opportunity have their heats in peace and, if they so desire, even sell an ‘exclusive supply of high-grade slick for the unmated Alpha on the go!’.Castiel is just such an Alpha, career oriented and having no time for casual sex or potential mates. He’s a regular customer who only buys donor D347’s slick. He’s also a family friend and advocate who helps Omegas in need get connected with Ellen. It’s all fine until one night after a difficult bust he brings Ellen a new Omega about to have her first heat. What Alpha Castiel doesn’t realize is that he’s been over-dosed with Rutter during the fight and is about to go into a rut so bad he may die. And if that weren’t enough to kill him, the embarrassment he’s about to feel will, because he’s about to meet donor D347 face to face and neither of them are prepared for what’s going to happen.

HBO Max New Releases: October 2021

The fall is usually the domain of television. September and October are the months in which networks (and increasingly some streamers) debut all their new series. With its list of new releases for October 2021, however, HBO Max has decided that fall works just fine for new movies as well.

HBO Max’s new offerings this month are highlighted by two enormous Warner Bros. film releases. The Sopranos prequel The Many Saints of Newark opens things up on Oct. 1. The movie is getting a theatrical release as well but you can certainly just watch it via streaming to make Sopranos creator and film purist David Chase mad. Next up is the sprawling sci-fi epic Dune on Oct. 22. It’s long been thought that a faithful and suitably enormous Dune adaptation was impossible. Now it’s almost time to see if director Denis Villenueve pulled it off.

Detective Conan Movie Ranking

Hey so while my laptop has been down I binged all 23 main Detective Conan movies and was gonna give a brief review and breakdown

Favorite (9-10) one of my favs High Medium (6-8) enjoyed, probably will watch again Low Medium (3-5) not bad but forgettable, might rewatch but maybe not Ugh (0-2) just bad, I don’t want to see it again

1. The Time Bombed Skyscraper (1997) [6] Relatively simple bombing plot but some good character action and development. Not as good as I remembered.

2. The Fourteenth Target (1998) [5] Criminal is targeting people close to Kogoro, some good scenes but not my favorite. Liked it more than I remembered which wasn’t a lot.

3. The Last Wizard of the Century (1999) [9] The Kaitou Kid is after a Russian Fabergé Egg. A true classic, one of the best. This whole movie is nostalgic with a good mix of action and heart. I love it every time I watch it. 

4. Captured in Her Eyes (2000) [3] Ran witnesses a murder attempt and loses her memory. Pretty bland and kind of a dumb plot, not inherently bad just not my thing. Expectations were low.

5. Countdown to Heaven (2001) [7] Several key figures in the creation of a building are murdered. The turn where DC movies became a little more action oriented, fairly good mystery, good effects and good character development. Liked it more than I remembered.

6. The Phantom of Baker Street (2002) [9] A rogue AI traps a bunch of kids in a virtual reality 19th century London to solve the Ripper case. As a Sherlock fan this is near and dear to me, like #3 its a warm, comforting movie. Always makes me smile to watch.

7. Crossroad in the Ancient Capital (2003) [5] Conan, Heiji and the rest are in Kyoto when a slew of antique smugglers are murdered, explores Heiji’s first love. Its okay, had some good deductions and bonding btw Heiji and Shinichi but the plot was a bit boring. 

8. Magician of the Silver Sky (2004) [9] The Kaitou Kid is planning on stealing a jeweled ring aboard a plane. Unironically probably my favorite, I just love this one so much for the half batshit/half emotional plot. Best use of Kid in the movies. 

9. Strategy Above the Depths (2005) [7] A series of murders occur on a luxury liner. It takes a fairly simple plot and spins a genuinely compelling murder mystery with som good character moments for Ran, Conan and Kogoro. Liked it more than before. 

10. Private Eye’s Requiem (2006) [8] With their loved ones held hostage at an amusement park, Kogoro, Conan and Heiji need to solve a cold case. The plot is a bit weak but this movie has the second best use of Kid and is hysterical from a meta POV. Love it every time.

11. Jolly Roger of the Deep Azure (2007) [4] One a small island, the group chases after treasure hunters and potentially pirates gold. Such a fun premise that ultimately falls flat but it’s got it’s enjoyable moments. Honestly couldn’t remember any of this movie.

12. The Full Score of Fear (2008) [6] Prior to a big music concert in Japan, a famous singer is targeted. The plot was kind of weird and forgettable but idk, I genuinely liked this. Definitely the calmest of DC movies, kind of a nice break from the usual chaos.

13. The Raven Chaser (2009) [9] A serial killer is on the loose and Conan finds himself competing for clues against the Black Organization. Another classic, a tight, fascinating plot, probably the highest plot related stakes in the movie verse. 

14. The Lost Ship in the Sky (2010) [7] The Kaitou Kid targets a jewel from an airship targeted by bio-terrorists. Kid is a little bit too bastard in this one tricking Ran like that but the plot is pretty interesting and has some nail-biting moments. 

15. Quarter of Silence (2011) [4] A train is bombed and the investigation takes them to a snowy village where an unsolved case resurfaces. Again, has some good moments and good visuals but overall was pretty forgettable. I barely remembered it. 

16. The Eleventh Striker (2012) [5] Soccer stadiums are being bombed and its a race against time in the midst of final matches. Same as above, good moments, good action but kind of boring. I liked it slightly more than when I first watched it.

17. Private Eye in the Distant Sea (2013) [1] A spy has been identified onboard a Japanese naval vessel with promises of more murder and mayhem. I was so bored throughout this entire movie and the plot was boring and meandering and didn’t make much sense. 

18. The Dimensional Sniper (2014) [3] A disgruntled American ex-sniper targets those who wronged him. Japan counters with their own sniper. Centralized on American military culture, it focuses on precision shooting with some nice effects but the plot is laughably bad.

19. The Hellfire Sunflowers (2015) [7] The Kaitou Kid targets van Gogh’s Sunflowers but is he becoming murderous? This one is kind of wild but in a fun way. The criminals motivation is baffling but a morally ambiguous Kid and Kid/Conan interactions are delightful. 

20. The Darkest Nightmare (2016) [8] A Black Org member steals a list of all the spies in the BO but loses her memory and she must decide if she wants to go back. Another heavy BO movie, it’s both poignant with crazy, physics defying action scenes. Really enjoyed it. 

21. The Crimson Love Letter (2017) [7] A Karuta card tournament is being threatened while Kahuza battles a girl in cards for Heiji’s love. This one I hadn’t seen before and it was very interesting, Kazuha got the well deserved spotlight along with some fascinating Japanese culture. 

22. Zero the Enforcer (2018) [1] Amuro accuses Kogoro of bombing a building leading to a legal and physical battle of wits and will. I..... I legit was so lost half of this movie. It jumped around wildly and borderline made no sense. Also I’m just not an Amuro fan so I couldn’t dismiss its flaws like I can with Kid movies. 

23. The Fist of the Blue Sapphire (2019) [2] Kaito Kid targets a sapphire in Singapore during a karate tournament and kidnaps Conan. This is the exception that proves the rule, the only Kid movie I legit didn’t like. Its so nonsensical and Kid again is too bastard to be likable. What even was the plot?

Yuzuru Hanyu Programme Concert ~Music with Wings~

The orchestra concert took place on 6 and 7 Jan 2020 in Tokyo.  There was a broadcast of it in Feb and I ENJOYED IT SO MUCH.

It’s 2 hours+, and it’s like a  journey through Yuzu’s skating life.  I translated some narration briefly and also put down the time for each piece of music so that it’s easy to re-watch certain parts.  Highly recommended to watch when you have some free time to enjoy it fully.  You can watch it in 2 parts of one hour each (there is intermission halfway, haha). 

So here are my notes and partial translation/paraphrasing.  (asterisk * means it’s my own thoughts/feelings)

Starts with Summer Storm, his free programme when he was 12 (2006-2007).

3:55  Yuzu’s video message: (very briefly) he welcomes everyone to the concert and says how music is an essential part of figure skating.  The programme is born from the music and he really wants to express music through figure skating.  This is the first time that there is a concert of the music from his very first programme until the current programmes.  So he hopes everyone will enjoy it.

5:54 - baby photo: Narrator:  This is one year-old Hanyu-senshu.  All of you already know this very well  (*because the audience are all Yuzu-fans, haha)  but let’s look back together.  He was born on 7 Dec 1994 in Sendai.

What an amazing concert!  Besides the music which made me feel intensely all sorts of emotions (I got goosebumps so many times), it was also very interesting to see the musicians and the different instruments that created those beautiful sounds that we are so familiar with (due to watching Yuzu’s skating videos countless times, haha).  The videography is very well done.  Much thanks to the musicians and to Yuzu and to all who made this happen, and thanks to the fans who shared the video!

Avatar’s real CGI legacy

"I see you" is an iconic line from Avatar (2009). It is the Na'vi's way of saying, "I  love you." At the end of the final battle, when Neytiri saves Jake and sees his human body for the first time, the moment is emotional because they love each other beyond race. This message is positive but has been seen before. The thing that separates this film is its use of CGI.  

The film revolutionized the reason to use CGI. It was previously used primarily to make something pop out of the screen. This became a predictable gimmick. James Cameron pioneered photorealistic CGI. His goal was to enhance the story with special effects that had never been seen before. Indeed he succeeded, maybe a little too well. "Thousands of posts appeared on the fan forum site 'Avatar Forums' from people who said they were depressed,  despairing, even suicidal--because they could not live in a world of Pandora." (Holtmeier & Park-Primiano, 4). Why did people react this way? It has to do with Avatar's parallels to real life.  

A tiny portion of the film takes place on a dystopian Earth. It got to be that way through climate change and other world issues we haven't yet resolved. Not only did these people think what they saw was the actual future but also that Pandora was a possible alternate Earth without the problematic legacy of the industrial revolution. Angry Hippie from YouTube  explains, "As someone who's felt this depression after seeing the movie, I can  tell you the depression doesn't stem from the want to be on Pandora. The  depression stems from this Earth is Pandora." (AVATAR: In-Depth Analysis) 

I cannot comment on having such a feeling after seeing the film. So many critics have written about the unoriginal plot of Native people versus Westernization and conquest.

Welcome to Part 4 of The Sumerian Epic! In this episode, our exploration of our history becomes even more unique and interesting, shifting from the stories of the creation of the Solar System, to the legends of the Ancient Gods as planets, to actual beings. The legends tell of beings called the Anunnaki (also called Anunna), who supposedly engaged in a number of adventures long ago, and among their many deeds, also created humanity in the process.

There are so many questions that arise when faced with claims such as this, and today we are beginning the exploration of our origin story by going over the essential concepts that have been laid out before us. These ideas have been discussed by a number of scholars over the last several decades, and as we’ve previously explored, a lot of these interpretations of the Sumerian Tablets were initially laid out by Zechariah Sitchin.

Sitchin believed that the planet Nibiru was inhabited with life, due to a strong atmosphere and a lot of internal heat from the planet's core, they were able to survive in the far reaches of space for a long period of time while their planet traveled far outside of our solar system. However, eventually their planet began having a problem, they were losing heat through a weakening of their atmosphere, and they needed a solution. Eventually, the idea was put forth to put gold particles in their atmosphere, creating a heat shield that could allow them to continue to live out in deep space.

Unfortunately, their planet didn’t actually have any gold on it, and so they looked for another solution until they found it on a planet they called Ki, the planet we know today as the Earth. The Anunnaki are believed to have come here roughly 450,000 years ago, where they began mining the Earth for its gold and shuttling it back to their planet. They mined for a very long time, but eventually, the workers grew tired of their task and rebelled against their bosses.

The outcome was a solution that would change the fate of life on Earth forever… The creation of a slave race to mine the gold for them. How will things turn out? Enjoy this brand new episode of The Sumerian Epic, and keep an eye out for part 5 in 2 weeks!

Blog Post #4 Intersectionality; Schmidt’s Funny, Flamboyant, and Sassy Personality

Media continues to improve upon the characters' representation because every viewer should have someone to relate to. New Girl shows a representation of race, class, and gender, which was mentioned in a previous blog post. Still, the producer Elizabeth Meriwether also incorporated representation of religion, body image, and identity. These are essential topics that should be covered in television shows because they are discussed every day. People should not be afraid to discuss these crucial conversations. Schmidt has the most representation throughout the show that many viewers can relate to.

First, Schmidt is Jewish, so New Girl is continuously talking about religion because Schmidt loves his Jewish faith. Schmidt makes Jewish jokes throughout the show; he talks about how he loves matzo and his bat mitzvah. Mandy Berman writes, "His Jewishness, from the start of the show, is always prideful. He peppers his language with Yiddish, posts a heavily edited video of himself on his JDate profile, and proclaims an unabashed love for kosher yogurt. Any time there's a less-than-complimentary allusion towards his Jewishness, he's quick to call it out". Schmidt never fails to defend himself and enjoys his Jewish upbringing. In one episode called "Santa," the first scene shown is Schmidt decorating the loft for Christmas. Nick, Jess, and Winston discuss Christmas as a kid, and Schmidt chimes in and says how it was terrible for his reputation to tell kids Santa is not real. Schmidt may joke about being Jewish during Christmas; however, Jewish characters could relate when they were younger, keeping Santa a secret from children who celebrate Christmas. Schmidt mentions his Jewish religion many times throughout New Girl because he wants to make it known he is Jewish and normalizes being a different religion from his friends. Nick, Winston, and Jess never seem to make fun of his religion, but they may joke in response if he makes a joke.

Second, Schmidt grew up as the "fat kid," and he did not have many friends growing up. So during episodes, Schmidt will discuss his past as being the "fat kid." Most of the time, he makes jokes about being fat and self-deprecating himself because he never wants to be at that stage of life again. In the show, his character is thin and dresses nice, so he mentions how he worked hard for his lifestyle and did not want to be fat. This is why he is a womanizer; he thinks that girls did not like him because he was overweight, so when he changed his lifestyle and became skinny, girls were more attracted to him. Now he sleeps around with women and treats women as objects because he believes he is superior to them. For some reason, being fat is a negative aspect of the show; he continues to make fun of himself when the show should have spoken positively about his life changes instead. Steve Sohn writes, "Thus, the mass media produces unrealistic images of the ideal body shape while sending out a false impression of how real and attainable these body shapes are. As a result, the media affects our own body perception and satisfaction through constant depictions of extremely attractive individuals. In other words, media depictions of such ideal body shapes increase the distance between our actual self-perception and our ideal self" (20). Viewers watching may find it funny, but it would be hard to relate for someone going through that struggle because he only talks about how great looking he is and how he never wants to go back to being fat. Landford Beard writes, "Greenfield said that Schmidt's weight loss "has a lot to do with who he is today" — for better or worse. "He thinks he's a different person now, but he's not. I think he was far more lovable and likeable when he was a little bit bigger. Now that he's lost the weight… he thinks he has to act a certain way. It doesn't always come off the best." Schmidt's whole attitude changed when he became skinny, and yes, the jokes may be funny, but he turned into someone who would bully him when he was younger. So, New Girl could have done a better job at representing body image more positively; however, that is Schmidt's character, and that's how he copes with it.

Third, Schmidt makes a new definition of identity. In the show, Schmidt is a straight guy and goes after so many women. But, Schmidt is very flamboyant and likes nice things, so viewers may think Schmidt is gay or bisexual, but he sleeps around with many women; he redefines the stereotypical role of a womanizer. Most womanizers in sitcoms like Two and a Half Men drink all day and do not have a job, but Schmidt has a good job and only goes out on the weekends with Nick, Winston, Cece, and Jess; he enjoys buying lavish things. He comes across as very OCD, and in many episodes, he is controlling the situation by doing extra cleaning or cooking. New Girl does an excellent job at representing identity because Schmidt is a character that does it all, and viewers can relate a lot to Schmidt. He is a funny character trying to discover himself, what he enjoys in life, and controlling his friends. Schmidt is a character everyone can relate to because he is Jewish; he was the "fat kid," he overcomes body image issues and is successful in his career. He is stubborn and can be insulting overall; he means well and can be a character people look at positively. Schmidt wants to be the best and strives for it, which is very successful.
