LANGUAGE LEARNING AND AGE It is never too late to start learning another language. I didn't learn Korean until I was almost 25! There are advantages to learning it at a young age, such as easier attainment of pronunciation, but perhaps there are equal advantages to learning it at a late age. Learning another language helps seniors ward off mental diseases and also gives them a fun activity to occupy their time. Many people use age as an excuse not to learn another language but in this day and age of rechnology, where anyone can be learning at home - - at least to an intermediate level, I think it's time to stop using age as a reason not to learn. #esl #english #englishteacher #grammar #eslteacher #teachesl #teacher #Canada #선생님 #teacherlife #언어 #교육 #영어 #영어공부 #영어회화 #생활영어 #초등영어 #영어잘하고싶다 #영어학원 #영어교육 #캐나다 #원어민 #학생 #영어수업 #korea #통영 #asia (at South Korea) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSf2-TGhAba/?utm_medium=tumblr

AWARDS FOR ESL Most adults studying English as a second language in Korea are doing so because they retired and and think of it as a hobby or they are trying to get a higher score on a test or something similar so that they can make more money money money money money! Middle school students or high school students are mainly studying so that they can get better grades in school. But unless you're in a very big city where students can be talking to foreigners everyday I think for younger students awards are extremely important. it gives them something to look forward to and motivates them to study a lot harder than they would otherwise. if you're a good teacher and you're teaching young students English you MUST have some sort of a award system in my OPINION. #esl #english #englishteacher #grammar #eslteacher #teachesl #teacher #Canada #선생님 #teacherlife #언어 #교육 #영어 #영어공부 #영어회화 #생활영어 #초등영어 #영어잘하고싶다 #영어학원 #영어교육 #캐나다 #원어민 #학생 #영어수업 #korea #통영 #asia https://www.instagram.com/p/CPQjjTMB-eJ/?utm_medium=tumblr

BUDDHISM CULTURE CLASS Since Buddha's birthday is in May our culture class for this month is about Buddhism. while I am not a Buddhist myself I am vegetarian and seem to have a lot of the similar ideals though from what I can see here in Korea there are a lot of ummmm... let's say "loose" monks who do whatever it is that they want to do. since a large portion of the Korean population seems to identify themselves as Buddhist I think it's important for students to know about the culture and a lot of the main words in English. I was surprised by how well a lot of them are at meditation, which apparently is taught at the Taekwondo academies. I think it is important to share culture in addition to grammar and vocabulary when learning a new language so that's why we have culture class every single month. #esl #english #englishteacher #grammar #eslteacher #teachesl #teacher #Canada #선생님 #teacherlife #언어 #교육 #영어 #영어공부 #영어회화 #생활영어 #초등영어 #영어잘하고싶다 #영어학원 #영어교육 #캐나다 #원어민 #학생 #영어수업 #korea #통영 #asia https://www.instagram.com/p/CPa3WneBTFg/?utm_medium=tumblr

EXERCISE WHILE TEACHING? I would love to hear opinions on my idea. Teaching all day long makes it difficult to get good exercise. Even though I ride my bike at night I need to spend eight hours in a classroom so I bought a power plates that shakes your body so much that it's supposed to be equivalent to power walking. Since it puts me in a higher position I can actually see the students better and I think it keeps me energized during classes too. I'm sure I look strange vibrating on top of a machine during class but most students seem to enjoy class more because of it. Has anyone else tried this? What do you guys think? #esl #english #englishteacher #grammar #eslteacher #teachesl #teacher #Canada #선생님 #teacherlife #언어 #교육 #영어 #영어공부 #영어회화 #생활영어 #초등영어 #영어잘하고싶다 #영어학원 #영어교육 #캐나다 #원어민 #학생 #영어수업 #korea #통영 #asia (at South Korea) https://www.instagram.com/p/CUNGybQBLqR/?utm_medium=tumblr

KOREAN HISTORY CULTURE CLASS History was probably my favorite subject in Middle School. To me it was a bunch of entertaining stories more than a school subject! As an adult I've come to believe that history is extremely important and in a country like Korea with thousands of years of history and where we are technically still in a state of War I think learning history becomes doubly important. In my opinion Koreans should be learning history in English if they have the ability to do so rather than wasting time on overly difficult grammar and useless vocabulary. #esl #english #englishteacher #grammar #eslteacher #teachesl #teacher #Canada #선생님 #teacherlife #언어 #교육 #영어 #영어공부 #영어회화 #생활영어 #초등영어 #영어잘하고싶다 #영어학원 #영어교육 #캐나다 #원어민 #학생 #영어수업 #korea #통영 #asia https://www.instagram.com/p/CTFYOtlh-ho/?utm_medium=tumblr

THE POWER OF LANGUAGE I really think many people underestimate the power and importance of language. A person who can use words well has the power to hearts! This can help them become successful in life but can also help them change the world should they wish. I see so many young people these days who seem to be less and less articulate. I don't know what it is about education or culture these days and that has kids being less able to share their ideas but it scares me. Another benefit of having a strong command of one's mother tongue is the ability to learn a new language much more quickly, thereby gaining the power to change the hearts of even more souls. #esl #english #englishteacher #grammar #eslteacher #teachesl #teacher #Canada #선생님 #teacherlife #언어 #교육 #영어 #영어공부 #영어회화 #생활영어 #초등영어 #영어잘하고싶다 #영어학원 #영어교육 #캐나다 #원어민 #학생 #영어수업 #korea #통영 #asia https://www.instagram.com/p/CTBVsk9hOST/?utm_medium=tumblr

IS KONGLISH DANGEROUS? One thing that a lot of North Koreans who escape to the south have trouble with is the amount of konglish that South Koreans use. There are so many words that young Koreans only know in Konglish such as computer, aircon, or pen. While South Koreans might not think much of this North Korean sees it is a beginning of the end for Korean culture. I never thought so much about it before myself but do wonder just how much a language can change before something important is lost. Opinions??? #esl #english #englishteacher #grammar #eslteacher #teachesl #teacher #Canada #선생님 #teacherlife #언어 #교육 #영어 #영어공부 #영어회화 #생활영어 #초등영어 #영어잘하고싶다 #영어학원 #영어교육 #캐나다 #원어민 #학생 #영어수업 #korea #통영 #asia (at South Korea) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSt94Wbh4mW/?utm_medium=tumblr

WHY SCHOOLS FAIL WITH LANGUAGES As a Canadian I grew up taking French in school for many years but still think that my Korean is much better than my French. This is coming from a person who has a french name and whose father spoke much better French than English! My mother did not allow French to be spoken at the house ( she was raised as an English speaker in a French community and I think always felt bad having french girls teasing her) but I was always motivated to learn at school. I tried hard but couldn't understand why My school studies never got me to an advanced level. Living in Korea I never took any courses at school but I did my best to learn the Korean language and have done succeeded. After teaching English for 20 years I really think that learning a language is an individual adventure. School might be helpful for learning some vocabulary or an unknown grammar rule here or there but to learn a language as fast and efficiently as possible you need to take it upon yourself to do so! When dealing with kids in a classroom atmosphere, where everyone has different abilities and motivations, it takes a really dedicated teacher to get results. #esl #english #englishteacher #grammar #eslteacher #teachesl #teacher #Canada #선생님 #teacherlife #언어 #교육 #영어 #영어공부 #영어회화 #생활영어 #초등영어 #영어잘하고싶다 #영어학원 #영어교육 #캐나다 #원어민 #학생 #영어수업 #korea #통영 #asia (at Asia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSUYrvuhKxL/?utm_medium=tumblr

A NEW SOUL? I don't know about a New Soul but I do believe that learning another language shapes you into another person. I've met lots of Canadians and Americans here in Korea and I believe that most Americans seem to be having more fun learning Korean. I think perhaps this is because many of them can't really speak any other languages other than English. Most Canadians speak French to some degree so learning Korean might seem less magical to us.. One thing for sure is that when you learn a second language for the first time you really do feel like something magical is happening. #esl #english #englishteacher #grammar #eslteacher #teachesl #teacher #Canada #선생님 #teacherlife #언어 #교육 #영어 #영어공부 #영어회화 #생활영어 #초등영어 #영어잘하고싶다 #영어학원 #영어교육 #캐나다 #원어민 #학생 #영어수업 #korea #통영 #asia https://www.instagram.com/p/CSHJxSph57-/?utm_medium=tumblr

CALM BLUE OCEAN. CALM BLUE OCEAN! I remember reading about positive affirmations when I was younger thinking that people were crazy repeating positive sentences to themselves over and over again in some sort of attempt to gain some false HAPPINESS. But as I get older I do definitely think that happiness has got little to do with what's going on around us and more to do with the way we THINK. However the way we think is without doubt connected to language... not just in second languages but the way we talk to ourselves in our own native tongue! So if you think about it the only way we can can see the world in a better light is by being careful about the language we use. #esl #english #englishteacher #grammar #eslteacher #teachesl #teacher #Canada #선생님 #teacherlife #언어 #교육 #영어 #영어공부 #영어회화 #생활영어 #초등영어 #영어잘하고싶다 #영어학원 #영어교육 #캐나다 #원어민 #학생 #영어수업 #korea #통영 #asia https://www.instagram.com/p/CR61ifgh1U_/?utm_medium=tumblr

THE SAFEST WAY TO "Travel" As a person used to traveling several times a year overseas I find it very difficult to stay in one place these days. While it is not exactly the same, speaking in another language helps me feel a bit like I have left the country. I know other travel bugs cannot wait to get on planes but until it is safe to do so using another language, especially with native speakers living near you, may help with that itch until we win the battle with covid-19. #esl #english #englishteacher #grammar #eslteacher #teachesl #teacher #Canada #선생님 #teacherlife #언어 #교육 #영어 #영어공부 #영어회화 #생활영어 #초등영어 #영어잘하고싶다 #영어학원 #영어교육 #캐나다 #원어민 #학생 #영어수업 #korea #통영 #asia https://www.instagram.com/p/CRgiGFYBLB-/?utm_medium=tumblr

CCTV IN CLASSROOMS I remember about 15 years ago or so when my hagwon owner wanted to put CCTV cameras in every classroom. I thought it was a horrible idea and it made me feel like I could not be trusted. But over the years I've learned that CCTV in classrooms can have great advantages including naturally controlling students who might behave badly otherwise and giving teachers a peace of mind in case students end up getting in a fight and a consultation is required. what do you guys think? #esl #english #englishteacher #grammar #eslteacher #teachesl #teacher #Canada #선생님 #teacherlife #언어 #교육 #영어 #영어공부 #영어회화 #생활영어 #초등영어 #영어잘하고싶다 #영어학원 #영어교육 #캐나다 #원어민 #학생 #영어수업 #korea #통영 #asia https://www.instagram.com/p/CRY2Qq7hVKy/?utm_medium=tumblr

SPONTANEOUS TESTING The whole purpose of testing is supposed to be to determine a student's abilities and help them study those things which they don't know very well. My friend Miki visited me this weekend so before we ran off to get away from civilization I had her interview a bunch of my students. Some of them were nervous but I think everyone had a good time. In my opinion this is how English should be tested. so many hagwons in Korea do "fake" interviews and take videos to show mother's so that it looks as though the students are superstars and everything is prearranged and prepared and rehearsed. I understand that certain skills need to be tested through test like toeic, however when it comes to conversation having a spontaneous interview here and there without any preparation is the best way to keep kids motivated and determine what they should be studying next. #esl #english #englishteacher #grammar #eslteacher #teachesl #teacher #Canada #선생님 #teacherlife #언어 #교육 #영어 #영어공부 #영어회화 #생활영어 #초등영어 #영어잘하고싶다 #영어학원 #영어교육 #캐나다 #원어민 #학생 #영어수업 #korea #통영 #asia https://www.instagram.com/p/CROQB5ohNAg/?utm_medium=tumblr

REMEMBRANCE DAY CULTURE CLASS Originally meant for the end of June today my students had their Remembrance Day culture class. In Canada we celebrate Remembrance Day in November recognizing the end of World War 1 however of course in Korea it comes in June and in recognition of the Korean War. I try not to get political on sns but it does drive me crazy every year when I see Koreans celebrate Peperro Day on November 11th... This is especially considering how much many Koreans complain about Japan and how much they dislike them. I know lots of Koreans do not know the facts and are not purposely ignoring Remembrance Day but.. It looks bad in my opinion for them to have a Day celebrating a Japanese product when, on the same day, many people are remembering those brave soldiers who came here and gave their lives to help South Korea. What do you guys think? #esl #english #englishteacher #grammar #eslteacher #teachesl #teacher #Canada #선생님 #teacherlife #언어 #교육 #영어 #영어공부 #영어회화 #생활영어 #초등영어 #영어잘하고싶다 #영어학원 #영어교육 #캐나다 #원어민 #학생 #영어수업 #korea #통영 #asia https://www.instagram.com/p/CQ0OA6zBiGq/?utm_medium=tumblr

ESL TYPING SKILLS While typing skills are obviously required by most people these days I have found a number of teachers who don't seem to think that typing is so important as part of an ESL program. I disagree! I think that in addition to learning phonics a person learning English as a second language should learn how to type in English as soon as possible. Using the computer a person with fast typing skills can learn vocabulary much more quickly then by pen and paper Am I the only ESL teacher out there who makes typing skills a requirement? what do you guys think? #esl #english #englishteacher #grammar #eslteacher #teachesl #teacher #Canada #선생님 #teacherlife #언어 #교육 #영어 #영어공부 #영어회화 #생활영어 #초등영어 #영어잘하고싶다 #영어학원 #영어교육 #캐나다 #원어민 #학생 #영어수업 #korea #통영 #asia https://www.instagram.com/p/CQqq9jGBAM3/?utm_medium=tumblr
