EXERCISE WHILE TEACHING? I would love to hear opinions on my idea. Teaching all day long makes it difficult to get good exercise. Even though I ride my bike at night I need to spend eight hours in a classroom so I bought a power plates that shakes your body so much that it's supposed to be equivalent to power walking. Since it puts me in a higher position I can actually see the students better and I think it keeps me energized during classes too. I'm sure I look strange vibrating on top of a machine during class but most students seem to enjoy class more because of it. Has anyone else tried this? WHITE DEW - 15th Korean Season Hey guys I just realized that I didn't upload this Instagram about the 15th Korean mini-season 😅 It is called Baengno and translated as WHITE DEW.. As the name suggests it was the time of year when you could start to see dew at night or in the morning. It was a time when birds started to migrate back down south and when typhoons could happen regularly. 추분 (AUTUMN EQUINOX) Today is Autumn Equinox in South Korea and much like the Spring Equinox it means equal hours of day and night. One thing that really marks this time of year is older Koreans drying red peppers outside. Even though I live in an apartment building I can see parking spaces taken up by tarps covered in red peppers being dried. It is the 16th of 24 Korean mini seasons and it is a time when bugs start to go away and the humidity also drops. A long time ago the king of Korea would have a special ceremony called 노인성제.. which is meant to pray for the longevity of all the people in the country. For me it is it is when fall leaves start to turn in the most northern part of the country. HAPPY CHUSEOK Wishing everyone a happy Chuseok.. which is Thanksgiving in Korea. More important than Christmas, Thanksgiving in Korea is a time for family to get together, eat a lot of food, take some rest, and be thankful for life. KOREAN HISTORY CULTURE CLASS History was probably my favorite subject in Middle School. To me it was a bunch of entertaining stories more than a school subject! As an adult I've come to believe that history is extremely important and in a country like Korea with thousands of years of history and where we are technically still in a state of War I think learning history becomes doubly important. THE POWER OF LANGUAGE I really think many people underestimate the power and importance of language. A person who can use words well has the power to hearts! This can help them become successful in life but can also help them change the world should they wish. I see so many young people these days who seem to be less and less articulate. I don't know what it is about education or culture these days and that has kids being less able to share their ideas but it scares me. Happy Cheoseo 처서 (chuh-suh) It is now the second Korean mini season of fall (14th of 24) and unfortunately there is a small typhoon in Tongyeong. The weather during this mini season is supposed to predict the outcome of rice harvests this year and rain means less rice! I have posted some info from Korea.net about the season. As its name suggests, this solar term represents the end of the summer heat and the beginning of cooler autumn days. Cheoseo generally occurs after the Homissisi celebration (호미씻이, 洗鋤宴, 洗鋤會), the hoe washing festival BbbDuring Cheoseo farmers have a brief respite before they become busy again with the harvest. The weather around Cheoseo should be pleasant and the sun strong enough for the rice to fully mature. Concern about the weather and the upcoming harvest would lead farmers in the past to exploit different kinds of divination methods that could, they believed, predict the outcome of their crop that year. A popular proverb in Tongyeong, Gyeongsangnam-do Province, for instance, states that, "Rain on Cheoseo cuts down 1,000 bags from the harvest. BIRTHDAY IN KOREA I have celebrated quite a few birthdays in Korea and in my opinion people's birthdays seem to be getting more important here. When I first came to Korea I was shocked to learn that many of my students didn't even know their birth date. At that time Koreans said that birthdays weren't so important since everyone here gained a year of age on January 1st. A person's Korean age is always one or two years more than their age in North America. These days I have many more students that know their birth date and expect to do something special on it as well. I was so happy this year to see that my son made me a special cake and also gave me a bunch of camping equipment. IS KONGLISH DANGEROUS? One thing that a lot of North Koreans who escape to the south have trouble with is the amount of konglish that South Koreans use. There are so many words that young Koreans only know in Konglish such as computer, aircon, or pen. While South Koreans might not think much of this North Korean sees it is a beginning of the end for Korean culture. I never thought so much about it before myself but do wonder just how much a language can change before something important is lost. COVID PFIZER VACCINE IN KOREA I finally got my first vaccine shot today here in South Korea. The country seems to be giving them at a later date than others but the virus was never that bad here so I guess it's a decision they made at the top. Either way I'm glad to say the process was painless and I don't feel any side effects at all. FAMILY TIME Now that Zoey is more or less recovered I thought it was okay for her to play with her nephew Hoya. I'm so happy to see that her traumatic experience with a Korean Jindo dog has not made her afraid of other animals. She had a good weekend playing with her golden nephew and three cat cousins. HAIRTAIL FISH Hairtail fish is pretty common in Korea but normally you just get a small piece of it. We found a place that gave the whole thing though it was expensive at about $75 for two people. LANGUAGE LEARNING AND AGE It is never too late to start learning another language. I didn't learn Korean until I was almost 25! There are advantages to learning it at a young age, such as easier attainment of pronunciation, but perhaps there are equal advantages to learning it at a late age. Learning another language helps seniors ward off mental diseases and also gives them a fun activity to occupy their time. ASIAN EAR CLEANING My mama told me I should never stick anything in my ears smaller than my finger. She was probably right but who am I to go against thousands of years of Asian culture? It was shortly after coming to Korea that I found my way to Korean ear cleaners and I've become addicted to them. I will clean my ears out at least several times a week even though it may cause bleeding I can't seem to stop😭 I wanted to check out the damage that I've done over the last ten or more years doing this so I found an invention that actually allows you to see the inside of your ear while cleaning it by connecting to your phone. I was going to upload a video of the inside of my ear but if you saw it I'm sure you would unfollow me so I thought better not to include it😉 It doesn't look so good in there and I should probably go see a doctor to see if anything can be done about the a caring. OUT OF BUSINESS Ever since I started working in Korea I always found it interesting how fast many businesses seem to go under. I am sure that living in a small town with a little population makes it even harder for businesses to earn money. This has never been more true than during the Coronavirus pandemic These days I see so many signs outside stores advertising spaces for rent. I feel sort of bad seeing these places as it is a reminder of how much the virus has affected the economy and local businesses. ZOEY BACK IN ACTION After a vicious sudden attack from a Jindo dog I was worried that Zoey might need to get surgery and would have a huge hideous scar. Luckily her healing has gone very well and there should be no more than a scar smaller than a Canadian loonies. Thankfully the experience has not changed her attitude in any way but I am very apprehensive now about letting her go near any other dogs in Korea. Besides from a Golden Retriever nephew and one or two will raised furry friends all other dogs here growl and snap at her for no reason.
