캐나다: 내 모래에 뭐 하는 짓이여?!

중국: 모래가 부족하다능.

전세계적인 물자 부족 + 물가 상승을 소재로 한 에피소드. COVID-19로 인한 칩 부족과 기후 변화/전쟁으로 인한 각종 공급 부족이 맞물리면서 2022년은 식량 위기와 함께 시작되었다. 당장 한국에서도 우크라이나 전쟁이 시작되자마자 치킨집들이 해바라기씨유를 싹쓸이 했다던가, 식용유 구입 제한이 걸렸다던가 하는 일이 있었던 것을 떠올려 보자. 휘발유, 칩, 식량... 모든 것이 부족하고 가격이 치솟는 중이다. 심지어 모래까지도.

모래가 부족하다니 이건 또 뭐하는 일인가 싶겠지만, 날로 거대화되는 도시가 엄청난 모래와 자갈을 필요로 하는 통에 1년에 소모되는 양이 400억 t이 넘는 반면 의외로 사막에 지천으로 널린 모래 따위는 별로 쓸모가 없는지라 갈수록 많은 바다 모래를 퍼올리는 상황이다. 심지어 대륙의 스케일이 이 문제를 피해가지는 않아서, 2010년대 말 중국에서 4년간 채취된 모래의 양이 미국이 지난 100년 동안 소비한 모래의 양과 맞먹는다고. 그러고도 모자라서 UN 안보리 결의를 위반하고 북한산 모래를 사오기까지 한다. 사실 모래가 돈이 된다고 하니까 남미 같은 곳에서는 범죄 조직들이 어린 애들을 동원해서 모래 광산을 굴리기까지 한다니 말 다한 셈.

영어로 "모래에 머리를 처박다(bury/have your head in the sand)"는 현실을 외면한다는 의미의 관용표현. ↩︎
