I think 华语 can refer to Chinese languages beyond just Mandarin, but in this case and a lot of other cases, it is used to mean Mandarin. I’ve read that the term 华语 is commonly used in Singapore and Malaysia. It’s also often found in the term 华语乐坛/歌坛 (Chinese music world).
Here is some other good vocab to know:
提名 tímíng - to nominate
入围 | 入圍 rùwéi - to get past the qualifying round / to make it to the finals
演唱 yǎnchàng - sung performance / to sing for an audience
演奏 yǎnzòu - to perform on a musical instrument
奖项 | 獎項 jiǎngxiàng - award / prize
得奖 | 得獎 déjiǎng - to win a prize
届 | 屆 jiè - classifier for events, meetings, elections, sporting fixtures, years (of graduation)
本届 | 本屆 běnjiè - current / this year
颁奖典礼 | 頒獎典禮 bānjiǎng diǎnlǐ - award ceremony
名单 | 名單 míngdān - list of names
I have noticed that the GMAs usually use 入围 instead of 提名 to talk about nominations. I’m not really sure why.
The award ceremony will be held in Kaohsiung in July. I don’t plan on watching, but I’m excited to see who wins nonetheless.
The Golden Melody Awards (GMA,金曲獎) are the largest music awards in Taiwan and the most prestigious and influential music awards event in the Chinese world (華人世界) since 1990.
This year, the Golden Melody Awards were held at Taipei Arena (台北小巨蛋), and I was lucky enough to be there!
Taiwan's TV stations also broadcasted live on YouTube, so I'd like to pick up three of my favorite live performances.
(Sorry that the videos are only available on YouTube due to copyright, please click on the link.)
--- --- ---
01. Phum Viphurit
Phum Viphurit was one of the overseas performers this year (from Thailand), and he was also the first guest performer of the whole event. I love how he always has a big smile on his face. 😆

🎵 Welcome Change
02. 葛西瓦、Matzka
葛西瓦(Kasiwa) and Matzka are aborigines of Taiwan (台灣原住民). Although they are both Paiwan people (排灣族),葛西瓦 is from Pingtung (屏東,a county in the south of Taiwan) and Matzka is from Taitung (台東,a county in the east of Taiwan).
Paiwan people have no writing but only language. They sang in their own language in this performance, so I did not understand the lyrics. But even though I don't understand the lyrics, it still touched me and I hope they can create more songs in their own language. 🔥
King Gnu was the other overseas performer this year (from Japan), and it was their first time performing overseas.
I waited for 4 hours until about 11pm when I finally got to see their performance. It's brilliant beyond description, completely on another level, as if it were their own concert. I wish they could come to Taiwan for ONE-MAN LIVE soon. 🙏
I just finished taking an incredibly eye-opening class about Chinese ethnic minority literature. China has a thriving minority literature scene, and it's absolutely fascinating and full of interesting works, so I wanted to share some of the authors that I learned about this semester! This is, obviously, an incomplete list-- it's pretty heavily biased towards what we read about in class, and there's probably a lot I've missed!
For any authors with full works that have been translated into English, I've listed it under their names. Some other authors may also have poems or short stories published in translation online or in anthologies.

More Resources on Ethnic Minority Literature:
Altaic Storytelling: The blog of translator Bruce Humes (translator of Confessions of a Jade Lord, among other works). Has a fairly broad focus, but he's written a lot about ethnic minorities.
Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Institute of Ethnic Literature: China has a thriving infrastructure to support the writing of and research into ethnic minority literature, and this is one of the larger institutions. I believe their research focuses more on oral traditions, but they have some information about contemporary writers as well.
Chinese Women Writers on the Environment: An anthology of eco-fiction by female ethnic minority writers.
Golden Horse Award 駿馬獎: This is an annual award for ethnic minority literature. The wikipedia link lists all the previous winners.
The Leeds Center for New Chinese Writing: Again not specific to ethnic minorities, but features several ethnic minority authors.
Paper Republic: This organization is devoted to translated Chinese writing and isn't specific to ethnic minority literature but has information about and translations of some of the writers on this list.
Poetry International: This website isn't specific to ethnic minorities or even to China, but many of the poets on this list have pages there with a few poems translated into English.
