Atreus had been traveling for a little while, looking for the other giants. He'd known it was something he'd had to do on his own, but that didn't mean he didn't miss his father and the friends they'd made, especially recently. Truth be told, Atreus had very much wished that his father could have come with him….., but he had to do this himself. He knew it with all of his being.
The boy had heard rumours that there were strange beings in the mountains, that if you looked just right, you could see a huge face, especially if you'd hurt yourself or were in some danger, and he knew that he had to go check it out. It could be an actual giant giant, after all, and he couldn't just let this opportunity pass him by.
He'd asked a few locals about the rumours, and he'd made his way to the place they'd mentioned, heart beating rapidly in his chest. What if they were only rumours? Or what if it was something entirely different and not another giant? He had to know.
"Hello?" he called out, hoping that there would be an answer.

Anonymous asked: Atreus - Has your father ever told you of his first wife? What of his daughter?
Send My Muse Anons About Their Relationships // Accepting!
Tumblr media
The question comes as something of a surprise.  He thought back to the time after they had scattered Mother's ashes, after the two of them had finally started to figure out how to be a FAMILY without her. His father had told him that he was a god, the first time he had really said much about his past.
Atreus knew that it was......painful for his dad to talk about his time in his homeland, but there had been one night, when they'd been staying warm around the fire, enjoying a moment of companionable silence, that his father had spoken first, telling him more about what had happened to bring him to this land.  He wasn't naïve enough to believe his dad had told him everything about his past, but he had mentioned, at least briefly, that he had had a family before, that it was their deaths had started the killing spree that had led him to kill his own father.
"He didn't tell me much, but I know that his first wife's name was Lysandra....., and that I had a sister named Calliope."  His father had sounded so sad when he talked about them, and Atreus had been able to FEEL his regret.  The sadness and pain that had washed over him as his dad had talked...., it was different than how he felt when Kratos talked about Faye.
"I hope he'll tell me more someday."  He didn't want to make his father sad, or force him to relive his past if he didn't want to....., but he wanted to know more about his dad, so he could TALK to him, the way they'd finally started to be able to.

Spartan Rage
hey look, this fic is a bit longer and actually happens after the game, not before it. this is roughly my theory of what is going to happen, mixed with the suggestion an anon gave me of Atreus fighting on his own/protecting his downed father.
So we came out with this. Lemme know if i’m still writing the characters correctly, also if I did a good description of fighting cause I haven’t as much practice with it ^^
After Atreus found out he was god- and a giant, and a mortal- he felt that he and his father could take on anything. Anyone. No matter who or what they are. This was only heightened after he found out that they had beat Magni and then Baldur. He had, honestly, felt invincible. Even if Father tells him not to keep that mentality- it's hard not to when they haven't been beat as of yet.
Though, of course, Atreus knows that his father is far stronger, far more invincible then he could ever be. His father is just so insanely strong- and now he knows it's not normal to be as strong as his father is.
So when they found Thor outside their house, lighting crackling all around him, Mjölnr held in his hand at the ready, Atreus was scared, of course, but he knew that his father could face him. With his help, too.
“Father,” he said, tugging on the large man’s wrist, holding his bow tightly in his other hand. “That's Thor!”
Atreus can see his father’s eyes narrow and his hand move towards his axe. He can also see the Thunder God pull his hood down, revealing his face.
“So, you are this… ‘tattooed man’,” Thor’s voice is deep, but not as deep as his father’s. Though it does echo more. But Atreus honestly isn't as intimidated by Thor as he is with his father. But then the eyes glowing with lightning to turn to Atreus, lightning flashing across the sky. “And you…” he trails off a moment, eyes narrowing and Atreus doesn't like his full attention. One of his father’s hands raises, pressing him back a little bit behind him. Atreus lets this happen, a bit nervous. “Are you the child… that the Giants call ‘Loki’?”
Atreus swallows as the name is brought up and looks to his father questioningly. He isn't sure what he should- or if he should answer.
“What do you want with us,” his father demands, ignoring the question and Atreus believes he should as well. He shifts his bow in his hands, readies himself to grab an arrow from his quiver.
“And so he is,” Thor said and Atreus swallows again, shifting on his feet nervously. “That explains many things that have happened, then.”
His father growls softly and tenses as Thor takes a step forward, pulling Mjölnir from his belt. “It also explains why I must destroy you,” Thor’s voice has deepened and booms around them, rolling like thunder. Then he meets eyes with Atreus’s father. “And you… you killed my sons. That cannot stand.”
“They got in our way,” his father states simply, replacing the axe with the blades Atreus has just gotten used to seeing. “As are you.”
“We shall see,” Thor said.
And then, all in one flash, lightning is shooting from Thor’s hammer and hitting Atreus’s father square in the chest, sending him through the air. And as Atreus’s mind catches up with what just happened, Thor appears in front of his in another flash of lightning, grabbing him around the throat with a meaty, calloused hand and lifting him from the ground. He chokes, feet kicking at the air instinctively.
“You are who brings on Ragnarok?” Thor demands, fingers closing tighter around Atreus’s windpipe. “Why, you're so fragile. Like ice!”
Atreus has to say something back. This is the perfect opportunity and he just can't not, even if he does know it's going to provoke the god. “You… you couldn't… break the ice… by Thamur’s corpse… how am I any… different?”
Thor growls and tightens his grip further, making Atreus gag and claw at the rough hand. “I ought to break your neck for that,” the god hissed. “But the Allfather wants you. Alive. So I guess I'll have to hold off on that, for now.”
But Thor doesn't even get to turn, he doesn't ben get to twitch a finger after that. Because Kratos bursts through a group of trees, grabbing one by its roots and hurtling it at the Thunder God with a loud bellow. It his Thor, sending the god one direction and Atreus in the other as he loses his grip. Atreus lands in the snow and gasps for air, grasping at his throat as heavy footfalls sound on either side of him followed by familiar, comforting hands grabbing his shoulders and pulling him back. Thor has slammed into one of the rock walls and is now peeling himself from it, eyes flashing dangerously.
“Deep breaths, boy,” Atreus can hardly hear his father and has to focus on his voice, forcing himself to draw in breath as Thor starts towards them once more. “That's it.” Once he's caught his breath again Kratos stands, bringing Atreus up with him. “You well enough to fight?” at his nod Kratos points to his discarded bow nearby. “Then hang back and fire when you can. Remember our fight with Baldur.”
“Ah yes,” Thor said, regaining Kratos’s attention as Atreus scurries to grab his bow, throat burning and neck aching. “You are also the ones who murdered my brother when he simply wanted to talk.”
Atreus’s eyes narrow and he's speaking again before he can stop himself: “He tried to kill us!”
Thor laughs, the sound bellowing through the clearing. “Correction, half-breed-” Atreus’s eyes narrow further and he quickly sets an arrow to his string- “he was trying to kill his mother and and your father. Not you, though.”
“I wasn't just going to let him-!”
“Boy, enough,” Kratos snaps and Atreus falls silent instantly. He holds his bow and arrow up at the ready, keeping his eyes locked on their opponent. “Hold your tongue for now.”
And then Thor launches himself at Kratos once more. This time, however, his father was ready and unfolds his shield at the last second, causing a loud, metallic ringing to fill the clearing as stone hits metal. Atreus takes this moment to run behind Thor and fire electric arrows, shouting, “þruma!”
But perhaps using electric arrows on the God of Thunder wasn't the best idea. As Thor leaps back from Kratos- Atreus rolling across the ground just before getting stomped- the god throws his hammer at the boy, catching him off guard just as he's leaping back to his feet and sending him to the ground.
As Atreus is trying to gather himself back up, he can hear the continued fighting nearby. He can hear another slam of hammer on shield followed by flames roaring to life as his father draws his blades against the other god. He leaps up just as Thor slams his hammer into one of Kratos’s shoulders, hurting him into a wall and Atreus runs forward, leaping from the ground and catching his bow just beneath Thor’s chin, using all his strength to try and choke him. He just needs to give his father time to get back up.
“Get off!” Thor shouts, grabbing his arm and yanking him forward, tossing him to the ground.
Atreus rolls through the snow as the god tries to stomp down on him, stumbling back to his feet and this time crying, “Ljösta!”, calling upon the light to try and stun Thor.
As the god begins to approach Atreus, raising his hammer to swing at him, Kratos comes out of nowhere, tackling the other god. They end up in a stalemate of sorts, both pushing at the other, weapons abandoned. Atreus fires more arrows, hitting Thor’s face and stunning him long enough for his father to get the upper hand and to push him down to the ground, pinning him to begin smashing his face in. Atreus readies himself in case Thor were to get back up.
But, instead, Atreus can hear thunder rumbling, can see lightning flashing above and as he glances up he can see dark clouds gathering in an angry funnel just above where his father and Thor were. But before he could call out in warning, seeing Thor’s plan, a large bolt of lightning strikes down directly on his father, sending the God of War backwards, skin burning.
Atreus’s eyes widen and he runs to his father’s side when the god doesn't get back up. His heart stops when he sees his father actually struggling to breathe, to stay conscious and he falls to his knees beside him, grabbing at his shoulders and shaking him.
“Father, get up!” Atreus cries, grunting as he rolls his father onto his back, swallowing to see his amber eyes so unfocused. So oddly unfocused. There's not even recognition in them and this terrifies Atreus. It's how his mother had looked when she was- He shakes more, faster and harder. “Father, please, get up!”
“Pathetic.” Atreus’s entire body freezes as he remembers the current situation they're in just as a large hand grabs his shoulder and throws him aside. He lets out a yell and crashes into a tree, body erupting with pain. He groans and pushes up to see Thor standing over his father’s still body, hammer in hand. “I was hoping for more of challenge, seeing as you killed my sons. Ah well. Perhaps they were just weak.”
And then time is slowing as Thor raises his hammer above his father’s head and Atreus can't breathe, can't think about anything else except for how he wants it all to stop. He suddenly can’t see anything but red and Thor’s face and how he wants to smash it in. He screams, heat exploding through his entire body and suddenly he can’t feel any pain as he flies forward with a rush of adrenaline, slamming into Thor’s side and forcing him away from his father, clawing at the god’s throat with his nails.
His nails tear and scrape at the skin of Thor's neck, digging deeper and deeper and for some reason the Thunder God isn't simply throwing him off again. Not that he cares right now. He continues to claw until his fingertips are caked in blood and then he stands, grabbing the handle of Thor’s hammer and lifting it as far above his head as his arms would allow, letting it fall with a sickening crunch on top of the God of Thunder’s face.
Red stains the snow and Atreus still doesn't stop. He lifts the hammer again, brings it down again. He does this again and again until finally hands wrap around his wrists, forcing him to drop the hammer and to hold his own hands at his sides despite his struggles. He yells and shouts and bites and hisses against whatever is holding him because he wants to continue smashing Thor’s face in he needs to because he was going to kill his father he needs to he needs to-
Next thing Atreus knows is he's being pressed against a warm chest, large arms wrapped tightly around him and a shaky breath breaks through his lungs. He is suddenly aware of the hot tears streaming down his face and the shaking of his body and the pain in his chest and the shaking of the body holding him.
He can also hear heavy breathing and a deep heart beat through the chest he's pressed against.
He realizes in the next second who it is that's holding him: his father.
His lips tremble and the tears pour faster from the corners of his eyes and he reaches up, tightly grabbing onto the armor his father currently is wearing like a lifeline. He lets out a small sob because he had been so, so scared. And so, so angry. He had never been that angry before- it had been so consuming and the only thing he could feel, could think. And now, he was so tired and in so much pain and he sinks into his father’s arms, having always craved affection such as this from the large man but needing it even more so now.
“That's it, son, breathe,” his father was instructing in one of the softest tones Atreus has ever heard him use. He breathes in another shaky breath, pressing his forehead into his father’s shoulder. “Let the anger leave you. That's it.”
Atreus latches onto his father’s voice and instructions, continuing to shakily breathe in and out. He focuses on his father’s breathing, forcing himself to mimic the pace he's breathing at. He swallows heavily and can feel his body slowly easing as the stress and anger leaks from him. He follows the feeling and can notices how it's like both the stress and anger are dripping into the snow around them.
It takes a minute or two, but eventually, Atreus catches his breath and has calmed somewhat. Once he had, his father slowly, hesitantly pulls away from him and Atreus let's him go despite wanting to hold onto him still. His father then stands- he had crouched to embrace his son-, keeping a hand on Atreus’s shoulder as he walks towards Thor’s still body. Atreus’s body tenses at the sight- out of anger or fear he can't tell- and his father’s other hand gently presses his face into his side, keeping it out of his view.
“He is dead,” his father announces a moment later and Atreus flinches at the news. He had killed another. His third victim. Sure he had killed Modi willingly unlike the man before, but the act of killing someone still leaves an impact. Especially with how he had just killed Thor; by repeatedly smashing his face in with his own hammer. “Boy, you did what you had to.”
“Let's just go back inside,” Atreus forced himself to say, hating how terribly shaky his voice is. He's afraid his father isn't going to comply, but let's out a relieved sigh as his father turns both of them from the body, towards their home.
“There will be consequences for this,” his father reminds him softly and Atreus knows it was a necessary thing to say. There are always consequences to killing a god, as his father has told him. And this is their fourth to kill.
“I know,” Atreus murmurs tiredly.
He is going to need a long sleep after this. He could hardly even stand.
He hopes the consequences could wait.

"So I guess I'm staying in Cabin Five," Atreus said, looking around at the Camp. Seemed a little awkward for him to stay with the kids of the god his own father had.....essentially dethroned, but he supposed there wasn't really a better place for him.

When he had been younger, Atreus never would have imagined that he'd live this long. He knew his father had been older than he looked, but not nearly the extent of his age. It was only after his mother had died, after they had gone on their journey to spread her ashes form the highest peak in the realms, that his father had told him that he was a GOD, which made Atreus half-god, too.
So much had happened since then. They had managed to (mostly) stave off Ragnarok, and he'd gone off on his own to find the rest of the giants. And while he hadn't quite managed to find all of them, he had recovered quite a few of them.
Occasionally, there were still rumours of giants elsewhere in Midgard, and Atreus would set out to see if he could find them, to bring them home.
But he'd never been this far east before. He was fairly certain that he was on the right mountain; it had been a long time since he'd gotten lost….., but as unlikely as it was, it seemed like he'd been going around in circles for the last little while.

Atreus (or should he be using Loki on his travels? Perhaps in other places he would be Loki, but in his father's homeland, it felt only right to use the name his father had given him) had not expected his search for the rest of the giants to lead him back to Greece.  And yet, here he was, the place his father had come from.  That was still a full story that he needed to ask his father to tell him, but that would have to wait until he went home.
He had thought that one of the giants was here, but he'd had yet to find them, something that frustrated him.  Atreus knew full well that his journey wasn't going to be EASY, but he'd expected to find SOME sort of clue as to where he needed to go.
The young god let out a little sigh, adjusting the bow on his back as he tried to figure out where to go from here.
But before he could do much more, a voice called out behind him.  He turned in the direction it had come from, wary, but not yet drawing his bow.
"Not yet," he replied to the question.  "But I haven't had a chance to look that much," Atreus admitted.  The young man hesitated for a moment, then decided to ask, just in case this woman might know something.  "Have you seen anything around here that might have a different sort of writing on it?"  It was the best starting place he had, while he was still figuring out the writing of his father's native tongue.

@dragetunge asked: "There's a reason I slip out as often as I do." Atreus seemed like he could be trusted to not tell anyone where he went. "I'm looking for someone. A dwarf." Hiccup was nervous about it regardless in case someone else were to hear. "He's the one who apprenticed me. Everytime i get a little close he's gone." He had a hunch the other knew who it was he was looking for. It was a long shot but it was one he needed to know. (For atreus)

Atreus sat on the wall of Asgard, high above the rest of the realm, one leg dangling over the edge. Now that he'd been granted leave to stay for a time, now that he was a guest, being up here didn't bother him as much. When Heimdall wasn't here, anyway; he was staying as far away from him as possible. He didn't like the way he looked at him, how he seemed almost able to see what Atreus--Loki, in Asgard, was thinking.
But right now, he and Hiccup were the only people up here. His friend had told him he had something to say, and he didn't exactly want to be around other people, and coming up here had made the most sense.
He listened as Hiccup said there was a reason he left Asgard as often as he did, the he was looking for someone. A dwarf, the one who had apprenticed him, something that gave Atreus pause. Brok and Sindri were the greatest blacksmiths he knew…; was it possible Hiccup could be talking about one of them?
"Yeah, dwarves can be tricky like that," he agrees with a little grin. "This dwarf who apprenticed you have a name? Maybe I've heard of him."

@trenchedstars asked: ❛ i don’t mean to be rude, but this is not as easy as it looks. ❜ (from apollo to atreus.)
Tumblr media
Truth be told, Atreus was still getting used to meeting other people, let alone other gods. Before Mother had died and he and Father had set out on their quest to fulfill her dying wish, he had really only ever seen his parents, after all. Which was why he was still kind of figuring out how to react to others in a way that wouldn't be seen as naïve or rude.
At the other's words, Atreus starts, realizing that he'd kind of been staring again.
"Right, sorry!" he exclaims, slinging his bow across his chest to help him carry the large deer. He wasn't nearly as strong as his father (yet, he hoped), but he could still help carry a deer.

Atreus watched the king of the gods curiously, his eyes wide. He hadn't expected him to come to Camp Half-Blood, and with the stories his own father had told him, he was very interested in meeting his grandfather. He was pretty sure that Kratos' stories had been exaggerated, and now that he was here, Atreus wanted to see for himself.
"Are you really Zeus?" he asked, utterly unafraid of the god. He had faced quite a few things in his lifetime, and he was more curious than scared.

calledkore asked: ❛  i suppose you think you’re brave, don’t you ?  ❜ / for atreus
Tumblr media
When Atreus had journeyed to his father's homeland, he hadn't expected to find any of the gods, considering the stories of his father. His father had killed the gods before he left, but apparently only the ones who had wronged him, something that Atreus was glad to learn.
Of course, the gods Kratos had killed had probably thought they'd been in the right, but it was nice to know he'd been provoked, at the very least.
But when he met Persephone and Hades, he was surprised to learn that they were the rulers of the Greek underworld, which was a different place than Hel, with different rules. And his father had escaped from the Underworld several times, which was apparently unheard of here.
They had apparently come to some sort of understanding with his father, that had allowed all three of them to live, to go their separate ways.
At her question, he stood up straight, despite the fact that he was not early as tall or imposing as his father.
"I'm definitely trying to be brave," he told her. "I know I'm not as brave as some, but I don't have much of a choice." If he didn't put his fears aside, to make this journey, then his people would continue to just be lost. He had to be as brave as he could be……for them.

While it was true that Atreus was out in the world, looking for the lost giants, when he'd come to his father's homeland, he'd had something different in mind.
Kratos had told him a little bit about his sister, Calliope, and Atreus knew that, if there was any way to rescue her, it would be in the Underworld, a place his father had apparently journeyed to quite a few times. And having been to Hel and back several times himself, at this point, Atreus thought that he might be able to do something about his sister, if he could just find her.
But he had run into a goddess instead, one that his father had left alive. She and her husband ruled over this place, and they had been spared his father's wrath. Which had to mean something, didn't it? She certainly seemed nice enough.
He'd talked with her a little bit, and she bent to press a kiss to his forehead before trying to send him on his way.
"I think there is someone down here for me to find," he said by way of protest, doing his best to be polite. After only a moment of hesitation, he admitted, "I was hoping to find my sister…., and if this is your domain, then maybe you can help me."

"Freya's family," he says, as though that explains everything.  "She could have killed me when I went to see her, but I KNEW she wouldn't."  He hadn't answered the question, not really, but it was ..... complicated.  No one could replace his mother, but he'd be lying if he said he didn't care about Freya.
If they'd spent more time together when he was younger, it might be different, but he and his father had had to learn how to be a family without Mother, and while he wouldn't say he didn't still miss her, he didn't NEED her as much as he had before.
But Freya was still very important to him, and he loved her like she was family.

Send My Muse Anons About Their Relationships // Accepting!

It wasn't a question he'd fully expected, and he looks up at it, offering the stranger a small smile.
"She's a good friend," he replied.  "Super strong, really good in a fight.  Thrud's gonna make an amazing Valkyrie someday."  But his smile faded as he thought about his friend, about how upset she'd been at seeing her father in the mead hall again.
"I wish our families weren't fighting," Atreus said, his voice soft.  "I think our dads could actually be friends if things were different.  She's been through a lot with her dad, and I can tell she cares about him.  And even after all of Mimir's stories, I'm pretty sure there's more to Thor than most people think, though Thrud's probably one of the only people that sees that."
He cared about his friend a lot, and he wanted what was best for her, wanted her to have a better relationship with her father, the way she so desperately wanted.

Anonymous asked: Atreus - what do you remember of your mother?
Send My Muse Anons About Their Relationships // Accepting!
Tumblr media
The expression on Atreus' face shifted, so full of sorrow for one so young.  It was clear he had been through the tragedy of losing a parent, one he had thought would live for a much longer time.  He hadn't expected to have to deal with losing his mother when he did, especially with the relationship he and his father hadn't had, at that point.
"She was always teaching me.  How to read runes, how to hear the forest...., the stories of gods, giants, men.....," he started, a faraway look in his blue eyes.  "Mother was always so kind, even when the lessons she taught me were about surviving."
A soft smile slipped onto his face, sad as it was.  "I miss her," he murmured.  "I can't help but wonder what else she would have taught me if she'd lived."
And part of him couldn't help but wonder if she was still out there somewhere, if he might be able to find her, to talk to her, in some way.  But he also knew that that was likely impossible.  He should just concentrate on remembering the sound of her voice, what her smile looked like, and how SAFE she'd made him feel.

"I.....don't know," he admitted, looking away from the goddess.  "I thought.....I thought I was doing the right thing, but I think I just made things worse."  Atreus' voice was soft, and it was clear that he felt.....shame for what he'd done.  He really had been trying to do the right thing.
They'd needed information, hadn't they?  They had needed to try to get ahead of Odin...., but he was pretty sure he'd accidentally given away more than he intended.  Atreus hadn't been accounting for Heimdall or his ability to read minds.
"How did you manage living in Asgard for so long?"  There were definitely good people there, but....., everyone seemed to have their own agendas.

@warpaiint asked: Stop being so stubborn before you bleed to death! - Atreus
More Random Dialogue Prompts // Accepting

He was bleeding profusely, but he didn't have time to deal with it; his dad was out there, fighting right now, and he needed to help him.  The prophecy was still hanging over his head, and he needed to make sure to be there to offer his dad support, to make sure that nothing happened to him.  Odin could be anywhere, and he did not believe that the Allfather would hesitate to hurt his dad to try to control him, not after what he'd seen.
"I don't have TIME for this!" Atreus exclaimed, pushing past Aloy. "I have to find my father!"
She was right about one thing, though; if he didn't stop for just a second, to FOCUS on healing himself, he wouldn't be much good to his father when he DID find him.
Atreus closed his eyes, putting a hand over his chest as he focused, the way his father had taught him, concentrating on healing the wounds he'd sustained.
