at long last, I present my headcanon about Luis's education/career timeline + why he kept working for Umbrella while knowing how fucked all of it was

First off there's enough 16 and younger high up Umbrella scientists that it's easy to just accept that shit in the RE world is just Like That and a 12 year old Luis rocking up to enroll in university just makes sense within the logic of the world, but my personal headcanon is way more expansive than that. I like to imagine him actually going to a school operated by Umbrella. The Umbrella boarding school in the Arklay Mountains was shut down, but I headcanon that it wasn't the only one. Umbrella having boarding schools for child prodigies just makes perfect sense- I mean just read a file about the Executive Training School. 

Going after/investing in younger kids is a logical thing to do because they're so much easier to manipulate and brainwash into being exactly what Umbrella wants. 

And since Umbrella Europe had that rivalry where they were always trying to compete with their sister branch, I can imagine them seeing what happened to the Executive Training School as an opportunity: Umbrella US fucked up the concept, so they can outdo them by simply running their own competently, without it completely falling apart.

Now you're probably thinking there's a hole in my headcanon, the fact that Hunnigan's report mentions Luis enrolling in university and working for Umbrella after graduating. 

My counterpoint is that Umbrella is sketchy as fuck. The whole "James Marcus being a crazy person and performing fucked up experiments on his own students" shit show happened when Luis was just a toddler. So I like to think that inspired them to get a little more cautious when it came to their fucked up child prodigy shenanigans, in time for them to have a solid system worked out by the time Luis is orphaned. And by that I mean they'd find a university to bribe into giving them cover. A new child prodigy graduates from the Umbrella school, Umbrella coughs up some cash, and suddenly that kid attended a university they never actually stepped foot in, and has a diploma with no direct ties to Umbrella. They 100% had the resources and pull to swing some type of arrangement like that. 

And Luis is literally the most perfect target for a school like this. He's not just young, he's from an extremely isolated place, making him even easier to manipulate. He also has nothing. They can single him out and crack the whip and push him harder than any of his peers, and he'll just accept it, because what else can he do?

It's Umbrella, or the streets for him.

And I think he probably caught on to the fact that he had made a deal with the devil pretty quickly after starting on the Nemesis Project, but he had made his bed and had to lie in it. Because even after he graduates/becomes a legal adult, they have him completely locked in. There's literally no paper trail or anything official supporting the fact that he's a person who exists. The only thing is the university records Umbrella paid for. Umbrella can hand over some chump change and make those go away too. He wouldn't even be able to start from scratch without a degree, because they could go after him for fraud too. Claim he showed them his degree when they hired him, but discovered it must have been a fake, because the university has no records of him. Who would the courts side with, the kid without a birth certificate, or the pharmaceutical giant that can afford an army of lawyers? It's probably not enough to be all that life ruining, but threats don't necessarily have to be true to work. With Luis's unique life, he's most likely going to be scared of any threat like that, he just doesn't have any experience or context to help him get a grip and really think about it, he's just scared shitless at the thought of going to prison.

And ending this with a point that's independent of my other headcanons in the post and can work on its own. When discussing why Luis stayed for years, we can't forget about Rockfort Island.

On the island, there is also a prison camp and an airport. The prison camp especially, represents an especially dark side of Umbrella. Potential industrial saboteurs and traitors to Umbrella are captured and sent there to be used as human guinea pigs in biological experiments. Once inside, prisoners are held there indefinitely.

I think the common assumption is that Luis fucked off back to Valdelobos because of Raccoon City and being afraid of governments/law enforcement coming after Umbrella, but I really think it was actually Umbrella he was running from. Umbrella would have seemed untouchable at this point, they had the blessing of the government to do what they did in Raccoon City, I doubt anyone there genuinely thought there would ever be legal consequences for any of that. Legal consequences were maybe a far-off possibility that wasn't guaranteed, while Umbrella was very much a real, present, active danger.

But if he got to a point where he couldn't handle the guilt of what he was doing anymore, his options were to disappear completely, or risk being captured and taken to a concentration camp. (Even just resigning normally, without taking any actions against Umbrella, would leave him terrified. A well-liked rising star like him just suddenly resigning, and offering no explanation, likely would have seemed suspicious, and given that Rockfort inmates were a resource for experiments, I can't imagine the bar for what makes someone a "traitor to Umbrella" is very high.)

alright does anyone else ever think about the fact that the "Navarro" comes from Luis's maternal grandfather, who actually fucking raised him when his father (Serra) obviously isn't someone he cares about at all, and yet he introduces himself as Luis Serra? like why not Luis Navarro??

I like to make this man suffer so naturally my headcanon to explain it is angsty; The anger stage of grief had hit Luis the hardest. now he was alone in the world, and he blamed his grandfather for making a mistake and getting sick.

Eventually he gets out of that angry stage of grief and wants to be Luis Navarro, but everyone in his new life knew him as Luis Serra, to the extent that he would have felt weird just suddenly being Luis Navarro again. (I know he did use both names and was technically Luis Serra Navarro for university documents, but since "Navarro" shows up in it once and then it's just "Serra" from then on, so to me it seems like a thing where he'd acknowledge himself being Luis Serra Navarro in super formal/official contexts, but in any other context it was just Luis Serra.)

Going back to Valdelobos initially would have been a great opportunity to reclaim Navarro, no awkwardness of an overnight name change. There was yet another opportunity when he introduced himself to Leon. But he doesn't take any of these opportunities. After the horrible shit he's done he decides to stay Serra, not wanting to disgrace his grandfather's name. Plus the fact he abandoned the name in the first place makes him feel guilty, like he doesn't deserve a second chance after rejecting it without any valid reason to.

bonus layer: Luis idolized his father. as in, idolized his imaginary version of his father he made up. I headcanon that he does take after his father in one way- his father was never in his life because he hated life in the village and decided to run off to a big city before Luis was born. (I flip-flop a bit but tend to imagine him as a deadbeat who knew Luis's mom was pregnant when he left and just didn't care) so all Luis knows about his father is that he left the village, so he turns into this blank slate Luis can project whatever fantasies he wants on to. Like if his grandfather told him he couldn't do something, he'd imagine his dad being the cool parent who would say yes. Whatever Luis is interested in in the current moment, he can imagine his father shares the interest.

Another thing I go back and forth on is whether Luis knows his father left knowingly. I can see his grandfather lying to him and saying his father didn't know, to spare him the pain of rejection. But I can also see his grandfather just being honest, to prevent exactly what ends up happening: Luis building up a mental image of his father that reality would never hold a candle to. But that wouldn't work; Luis is a really creative kid who loves heroes, and his imagination has no trouble spinning stories about how his father is a hero who fights bad guys, and wants to have Luis in his life, but it would put him in danger.

So when his grandfather gets bit hunting, and then sick from it, he imagines his father would be a perfect hunter who would never make a fatal mistake like that. Making "Luis Serra" an even more appealing option in the midst of his grief.

alright Serrennedy being dads headcanons because my brain is so fucking rotted

Some of these are specific to the AU I imagined for my drabble, but at least some of them can work more generally. AU TL;DR: Luis and Leon were in Raccoon City together, but everything goes right after and they have normal lives (and custody of Sherry)

Them having twin girls is 100% general btw not just in my one AU they're girl dads in my brain, I physically cannot imagine them with sons ok

Even once they're both on the same page when it comes to kids, i.e. wanting a baby, they hesitate to actually start trying for a long time, because they're worried that a baby would take up too much of their attention, making Sherry feel ignored like she did with her bio parents. But eventually they talk to her about it, and she's actually excited about the idea of having a sibling.

Obviously twins do take up a lot of their time, more than they had planned on when first thinking about a new addition to the family, but they make sure that she still gets one-on-one time with both of them regularly.

Luis isn't an overly strict parent, but between the two of them, he's definitely the stricter one. He'd be a bit more flexible during the day, but for things like bedtime he'd be really consistent. If the kid(s) asked for him to read just one more chapter of a book or sing just one more lullaby before going to sleep, he might give in occasionally, but he really would leave after a single chapter or song. Whereas Leon would cave a lot easier, and just keep reading (Leon wouldn't sing to them, he feels like he's bad at singing and, even though the kids wouldn't care, he'd feel too awkward about it, so singing to them is just Luis's thing.) until either the kids are asleep or Luis finally just comes in to tell them all (including Leon) to go to sleep or they'll be tired and cranky tomorrow.

Obviously it's important to Luis that they learn Spanish too, but since Leon barely speaks it, he's careful to make sure Leon doesn't feel left out. So usually he'll talk to them in Spanish on the days Leon is gone, but only in English on the days Leon is home. (Leon's a firefighter in the AU so, even though it's not as bad as if he was an agent, he is gone for 72 hour shifts regularly.) He'll switch to English early in the day before Leon is even home, because sometimes Leon gets home early and he tries to sneak in quietly to eavesdrop. It starts off because Luis talks to the babies with his normal voice, and never uses any type of baby talk or anything, and Leon is convinced that Luis does it in private, but gets too embarrassed to do it in front of Leon. So Leon tries to catch him in the act. It turns out that he's wrong, and Luis genuinely just talks to them with his normal voice 100% of the time. But Leon still keeps doing his weird eavesdropping routine occasionally, just because he likes listening to Luis and the kids. Leon isn't as stealthy as he thinks and Luis 100% knows that Leon does that, but he pretends he doesn't know because he thinks it's cute.

Luis wouldn't care about what the babies call him. Leon would, and bring up that they can't both be called Dad or it'll be confusing. Luis isn't concerned and says they can just wait until the babies start talking and roll with whatever they decide to call them. Leon's response is that "They're going to think your name is 'Shut Up' if I don't call you something in front of them." Luis knows he's 100% right about that and they decide to just keep it simple, Daddy and Papi.

Luis's favorite kid related purchase they make is a baby carrier that lets them wear both twins at once, one twin on their back and the other on the front. Luis starts off just wearing them when he needs to make a run to the store while Leon is working or exhausted, but becomes a way bigger Thing. People are weird about babies in public, so ofc on that first trip Luis gets randos coming up to compliment the babies, talk about how they don't know how Luis can handle taking twins out on his own because their one kid is demonic, etc. And Luis is an attention whore so he just eats that shit up, and starts taking the babies with him on most errands. He also just enjoys sharing part of his routine with the babies, so instead of always putting both of them in their swings at home when he's cooking or doing chores, he'll wear one and just narrate what he's doing.

They're both overprotective. For the most part, Luis is only overprotective when it comes to people. He gets scared to leave the babies with people he doesn't know well, because from his time at Umbrella he knows that people who seem really nice, seem like good people, people he genuinely bonded with, can still be capable of really fucked up stuff. But he's fine with most other situations, because of his own childhood experiences going into the wilderness with his grandfather from a young age. Leon's overprotectiveness is sort of the opposite, he's got some trust issues too, but it's other stuff that he's most likely to freak out over. Like if one of the kids managed to slip out of their sight, Leon would be panicking and looking frantically, and Luis would be like "this happened when I was 3. I was lost in the woods for 2 days before my grandfather found me, she'll be fine." (Luis would be concerned and want to look obviously, he just wouldn't be panicking.) But if they left the kids with a babysitter just for a couple hours, Luis would be freaking out and wanting to call and check on them every 10 minutes and Leon would have to tell him it's fine and confiscate his phone before he blows up the babysitter's phone.

Luis hates baby clothes with any sort of words or slogans on them, so naturally Leon would buy the cringiest inappropriate baby clothes he could find and put them on the twins to see how long it takes for Luis to notice. Shit like this:

AU where Luis sabotages the Nemesis Project, gets caught, and sent to Rockfort Island.

Alfred Ashford notices that Luis was a child prodigy and thinks that's neat because he's a weirdo and Alexia was a child prodigy. So instead of being executed, Luis is forced to be his friend until Alexia wakes up from her cryo stasis thing. (And being his friend is not a good time, because he's a weirdo and threatens to get his sniper rifle and hunt down Luis for sport a lot.) Luis gets out when Claire does, and goes back to Valdelobos after to hide from Umbrella, meaning RE4 will still happen, although slightly different. Luis is much colder and very hesitant to help Leon, because trying to do the right thing previously got him sent to a concentration camp.

Leon notices him trying to leave and says fuck that and argues with him, insisting that he will come with Leon.
