summary: based on the song “i want your video” by djo

you get a little too drunk on a night out with your friends. they call your boyfriend joel to come to the bar to pick you up, but you beg him to stay so you keep dancing for another song or two or five. and of course, he obliges.

warnings: NO USE OF Y/N, no/pre-outbreak, established relationship, use of pet names, alcohol use

a/n: i literally love this song and just imagine joel being the one holding your bag every time i listen

“I’m not going anywhere, darlin’. I’m here to take you home, so I will take you home when you want to go,” Joel speaks in his low, affectionate timbre into your ear, his head bent down so you can hear him over the pop music blaring around the bar.

“Just one more song, I promise. Unless the next one is really good. Then you can take me home, handsome,” a small drunken burp comes out as you pull away and wink flirtatiously at him, a laugh slipping out as you stumble back towards your friends. Halfway there, you turn back a bit too quickly, nearly tripping over yourself.

Joel steps forward, ready to swoop in and catch you. You balance back on your feet before he can make it over, taking short, exaggeratedly careful steps back to him.

“I forgot to ask. Can you hold my bag? It’s just been so annoying and I just wanna dance and it’s so heavy on my arm and --”

Joel’s light chuckle cuts off your drunken rambling, nodding as he holds out a hand for the small shoulder purse that is hanging on your shoulder.

“Course I can, sweet girl. Gimme your bag, I’ll be here waiting for you.” He looks down at you tenderly, with no annoyance on his face about the fact that you’re keeping him here late or about the fact that your friends had to call him to pick you up in the first place. His large hand dwarfs the bag, holding it by the body of it and tucking it against his chest. He crosses his arms over it, leaning back against the high-top table where your friends and yourself have discarded your empty glasses. Many empty glasses, he notices.

Joel’s attention is pulled back to the dance floor at the sound of your voice singing over the music. A grin pulls at his lips, watching you as you move to the beat of the music. It’s rhythmic, and the alcohol in your system has lowered your inhibitions enough to make you completely carefree. There are no rigid movements, only fluidity. Hips sway back and forth, nearly hypnotizing him as he hones in on them.

Your laughter pulls his eyes away from your body, gaze falling on your face. It’s lit up with elation, your eyes sparkling in the lights of the bar and your smile wide on display. Your hands hold onto your friends to your left and right, all of you now jumping around and singing to some Spice Girls or Destiny’s Child song that he doesn’t know the name of.

He’s completely enamored with the sight of you, an affectionate smirk quipping up the side of his mouth as he chuckles to himself. There’s a beaming light inside of you that is shining unobstructed through the joy you’re sharing with your friends and even the strangers around you. He can see people staring, unbothered by any guys checking you out cause he knows that he’s the one that’s getting you overnight. He’s the one holding your bag, the one who’s got your back until the end of the night and beyond.

In the midst of his admiration, you’ve separated your hands from your friends to peel off the platform sandals you’d decided to wear out. He warned you before you went out, knowing that he’d end up putting band-aids on your blisters in the morning. The sight gives him another chuckle, shaking his head when your eyes find him and send him a pleading pout. Your hands hold your sandals out by the straps, swinging them back and forth.

He concedes and waves you over, meeting you at the edge of the dance floor to take your belongings. You send him a grateful smile, eyes glazed over by still holding the warmth they always do when you look at him.

“Thank you, baby. You’re the best boyfriend ever! One more song, I mean it!” your words draw out in the most minor slur.

“Whenever you want, darlin’. But be careful, please. Don’t want you to step on any glass.” He gives you a serious look, concern in his eyes as he takes your shoes from your hands.

“I will be. Thank you, love you!” Your words are punctuated with a quick kiss pressed to his lips, soft laughter trailing behind before you turn around and run back to your friends.

Gone in a whirlwind again, he just sighs contently to himself, returning to his post at the table. He spends the next twenty minutes just watching you, in a state of being that is completely who you are. You move like you know what to do, each motion confident and carefree.

God, he was in awe of you. Always yourself. And he feels so lucky to know so much about you, and to be the one you chose.

He’d let you know what he’s been feeling tomorrow night in the comfort of your shared home, but for tonight, he’s content to wait until you’ve danced til you drop and he can be the one to carry you home.

A few more songs pass before you say your goodbyes to your friends, all of them hugging you and sending Joel an appreciative wave. He smiles and sends a short wave back, eyes focusing on you as you stumble towards him.

“Ready to go, pretty girl? Danced out?”

Your eyes are half-lidded, the drowsiness from the activity and the drinking of the night finally catching up with you. Your head lulls in a nod, gentle grin growing on your face.

“I’m ready. Thank you for indulging my need to dance. And for coming to get me,” you hiccup and take your shoes, slipping them back on without doing up the straps. Joel keeps your bag in his hand, clasping his other with yours to start guiding you out to his truck.

“You wanna know a secret?” you lean into his side, tumbling over your feet for some steps. He holds you tightly, walking slower to stay slightly behind you in case you trip.

“I always wanna hear secrets from you, sugar. You always got the good gossip.” His small jest makes you laugh, the sweet sound pulling the corners of his lips up into a wide smile. He squeezes your hand, leading you out of the double doors of the bar into the cool night air. He quickly separates from you, shrugging off of his jacket and draping it on your shoulders before intertwining your hands again.

“Not gossip, sorry. But still a good secret,” you grin impishly, swinging your hands between you as you approach his car, “I asked my friends to call you. I know you gotta work tomorrow but I wanted to see you sooner, and when you were awake 'cause you probably would’ve been sleeping by the time I got home.”

Opening the passenger door, he gazes down at you with adoration, his wide smile still plastered on his face.

“I’d come to get you any time, anywhere, baby. And you can always have one more dance.”
