self-para of kalani opening cieran’s gifts… 

it was the morning after the halloween party, her head was pounding and she had been rudely woken up by a knock on the door. getting out of bed, she made way to the front door. glancing out the peep hole, she doesn’t see anyone there. opening the door, she spots the gifts left at her doorstep. her eyebrows rises in confusion as she glances around before taking hold of the gifts and bringing it inside. first, she place the sunflowers on her kitchen table to mentally remind her to place it in a vase later before grabbing the rest of the gifts heading back into her bedroom. placing it on her bed, she climbs back in. she opens the bag, pulling out the two cards in there first. picking up the first card and just by the handwriting she already knew who it was from. her body instantly grows cold and she feels sick. he remembered her birthday. even if they weren’t exactly on speaking terms, she would of thought he’ll forget about it and it’ll be any other day to him. of course, each year he always mentions that it’s his favorite day and when she finally grew curious and asked him why, he simply informs her it was because she was born. her hands slight shakes as she slowly opens the card, her eyes scanned the card reading it over and over again. her heart would pick up every time she sees the crossed out words and she couldn’t help, but form tears in her eyes. kalani couldn’t understand why, all her emotions just bundled up and she was there on her bed crying. letting out everything as she sniffles slightly, after a couple minutes she went back to the gifts.

the first thing she pulled out was the tennis set, a slight gasp escaped her lips as she recalls what he wrote in the card, ‘hope to see you on the court with these soon?’ granted, she did miss a few practices with him after the night of the party, but it was simply because she couldn’t face him and it wasn’t like he truly made effort on contacting her. when kalani unwraps the box that held the dress, she smiles lightly at the memory of how she pointed out how beautiful the dress was and continued on with her stroll, when she noticed cieran wasn’t following along stating he forgot something and asked her to hold his bags. little did she know that he vanished to get her the dress she wanted. every now and then another tear will stream down her face as she went through the gifts. what pushed her over was the care-bear. she lets out a small giggle as tears fell from her lips. her own personal cier-bear. kalani knew that the blue bear will now forever live on her bed, placing it down besides her on the bed she boops the nose of the bear before smiling softly before a frown came upon, realizing their state. she miss him, she misses him more than anything.

she opens the second card next and in mrs. brooks handwriting, she smiles reading the card. she was always like a second mom to her. opening up the charm, she smiles warmly, staring at it. each year the brooks would pick out a charm to add onto her charm bracelet and it was like a little time machine of her past birthday’s with them. each charm had a story behind it and she enjoyed telling it to people whenever they ask. could she even consider herself a honorary brooks when she can’t even talk to the boys? it seems that cieran was ignoring her and she couldn’t speak to kai because he reminded her of him too much or he would bring him up without realizing it. regardless, she still added the charm to her bracelet, the one she always had on. wiping her eyes, she places everything back in the bag, placing them on the floor besides her bed as she lays back down. memories from that night flashes through her head as she took hold of her phone. her finger hoovers over his contact as she debating about calling him to thank him for the gift. it hoovers over it for a couple minutes before she sighs and clicks out of it, going to his mom’s contact instead. she decides to send his mom a text that read, ‘thank you for the lovely thoughtful gift. i love you lots, also, tell all your lovely children i said thank you for the gifts, especially cieran… he didn’t have to spend a fortune on me. also remind me to give you a call later, so i can thank mari too. xo.’

she didn’t know if his mother knew they weren’t exactly speaking to each other and kalani wasn’t going to be the first one to reach out, she took it as a sign that he didn’t feel the same way. she wonders if things would ever go back to normal… or this is their new normal. it doesn’t feel right, life’s just bland without cieran in it. of course, they spent months without speaking to each other when they were younger, but they were always in contact someway. this? this was different. it was like all contacts been cut between them. after sending the message, she goes to her instagram, clicked on her story and photographing her room where there were lots of balloons and gifts everywhere. she made sure that in the photo you can see the little blue carebear on the bed. snapping the photo, she types of ‘thank you for the birthday wishes & gifts, love you all,’ before posting it. with a sigh, she locks her phone and places it down on the nightstand, grabbing hold of her new favorite thing – her cier-bear, pulling it to her chest, closing her eyes hoping she could make the pounding headache go away with more sleep.
