it's so... idk. sad? infuriating? that jaime's golden hand is 100% decorative

he mentions earlier that a hook would've served him better and like. this thing is ornate, heavy, and totally non-functional. i'm sure lugging around something so heavy on his stump hurts like hell. but it's also completely useless. it can barely hold the weight of a wine glass, and no wonder if it's strapped to his wrist.

he could have been given a functional prosthetic that allowed him to grab and hold things and was secured at his shoulder/chest

but a lannister needs to be SEEN to be whole!! a lannister needs to be decorated and elevated and refined!! an actually functional prosthetic would've given him away as a cripple!! we can't have that

so instead we've tied a paper weight to his stump. it hurts and does nothing. the fingernails are mother of pearl.

is brienne dying by lady stone heart?

She might. She might not. I hope not.

What I think is that Brienne's going to wind up protecting someone successfully. If that's Jaime, then yes, she stands a real chance of dying at Lady Stoneheart's hands. Though again, I would not consider that a sure thing - I tend to think that the Jaime/Brienne relationship needs some resolution, which requires some time not fighting for their lives, and which I suspect is most logically placed after the conflict with Lady Stoneheart.

If Brienne ends up protecting someone else, that's most likely to be one of Catelyn's children, and the sheer logistics involved mean that Brienne's likely to survive a fairly imminent conflict with zombie Catelyn.

ultimately like it or not asoiaf’s perspective on gender is that it is entirely constructed and prescribed by society and must be performed (by you or on you) and that performance is almost always a domain of unending horror and violence. and very few seminal fantasy works contain similar perspectives. so

the thing i find the most compelling about both a feast for crows and tales of dunk and egg is that very like. humidity-heavy sense of low-grade doom just throughout. every chapter starting with someone alone reflecting on an act of violence they witnessed. the sense that something is fundamentally wrong. everyone knows it. the world is dying. it is so askew that nature is responding in kind and becoming increasingly inhospitable.

and even though everyone knows there’s something horribly horribly off the question the narrative asks is not “how do we stop the world from falling apart” it’s the much more intimate “but how do we live through a time when the world is dying.” how do we endure all that and decide to be good anyways. deeply profoundly human!!!!!!!!!
