Daily excerpt from today's writing, chapter 15 of A Stain that Won't Dissolve:

'I just don't think it's fair that you implied you were an option,' Sebastian said. 'Like he was just shocked when I told him you were the straightest guy to ever come out of the Valley. You told him you just weren't looking right now?' The straightest guy to ever come out of the Valley... Alex could've laughed. So straight. So super straight that he was jerking off to a guy back when he was in his teens.  'I didn't mean to lead him on,' Alex said.  'You're driving me crazy, Alex, I don't know how to have an actual conversation with you. I know I'm not a person who can really throw stones about this kind of thing, Wentworth made it clear that I'm not the best communicator either, which is really saying something. But you're like a brick wall. I mean, you are straight, right?'  Oh shit.  He wasn't supposed to just ask like that. Those words were never even meant to be in Sebastian's mouth. And Sebastian's expression was changing, like he was answering his own question, and Alex couldn't handle that either. For too long, Alex's mind was blank, because he knew the correct response was to lie smoothly, and the wrong response was to sit there in silence because he knew that was its own answer. Damn it.  'I don't really see how it's any of your business,' Alex forced himself to say, while Sebastian stared a hole into him.

I don't really enjoy fanfiction. It's not something I read in my spare time, but I believe in the value of a varied media diet, and I enjoy seeing what my internet acquaintances are reading.

As someone with a more traditional literary education fanfiction is bizarre to read. It's like an entire mode of writing that completely missed the boat on narrative multivalence and complex figurative language, but has an absolutely scalpel-fucking-sharp hand at pacing.

I find that fascinating! Maybe it's just the things I've been exposed to, but I feel like theres a pattern. I've found that even lackluster fanfiction prose tends to be delivered with a fairly advanced understanding of narrative pacing.

I don't know much about the broader culture of fan authors, but if I had to hazard a guess, it probably comes from a culture of discussions around what could make an existing story better. That would be an excellent trial-by-fire for getting a sense of when the important beats should happen.

#fanfiction #symbolism #writing #also bears noting that in the case of authors from non-English backgrounds #not everyone is coming to the table with the same media background #and just because you aren't seeing those references and that symbolism doesn't mean they aren't there #I see plenty of fic authors reference non-English poets and songs on the regular #and mythology #I quite frankly love getting to jump into a field of media that isn't so heavily reliant on Christian metaphors #and references #whereas when I was studying English lit that's such a large chunk of what you're forced to deal with #like yeah plenty of fics still do that because Christian supremacy and all that bs #but it's far less so comparatively than you get with quote unquote literature canon #I do always think more folks would benefit from studying poetry but I don't assume they haven't just because their writing isn't for me #as someone who was angry I was signed up for a poetry unit I will say it was one of the most beneficial college courses I took #this is just making me think of all the Japanese authors in particular writing fanfic on the regular like #it's a very English specific take #and maybe I don't always jive with what I read but I do enjoy people living their best lives writing it #also I know the everything is fanfic topic is a whole mess but like #even if you're reading whatever version of high literature or whatever #a lot of it is arguably fanfic #you aren't escaping it just cause you avoid Ao3 #humans have been writing self-insert fanfic for about as long as we've existed #and love letters to our favorite artists and authors #Dickens literally got into scandals about writing people he knew into stories #and I mean Dante's Inferno? #Wicked the musical is literally fanfic of a fanfic book series #we take stories and things that speak to us for one reason or another #and turn them into something else #and that's really neat
