Reputation Chapter 2: Dress (Part 1)
I know it’s been a long time since I’ve updated this story, and, to be honest, I’m not exactly sure where I was headed with this story when I started it over 3 years ago. However, hopefully it’s still enjoyable!
This can also be read on AO3 and FFN.
Inescapable, I’m not even gonna try. And if I get burned, at least we were electrified
–Taylor Swift, the icon
It’s twelve past seven in the morning when she wakes up in an unknown bed accompanied with the worst headache she’s had since the Giant Squid Incident of ’76. She takes note of the sheets adorned in badgers and the stuffed badger she was holding close to her chest, and she recalls the horrors of the night before. Teasing his posh accent, the mischievous look in his hazel eyes as they flirted, her embarrassment after their kiss, and—most importantly—the vast amount of badgers. And yet, despite the badger fascination, James Potter still didn’t even make the top 5 on the list of weirdest guys she had ever gone home with. Although, he did hold the top slot for the most frustrating . . . for more reasons than she cared to admit.
She should be more embarrassed about the previous night, but well . . . it’s hard not to find it endearing when a cute guy takes you home and tries to sober you up, especially someone as incredibly wholesome as James Hufflepuff Potter. She turns over and sees his tousled head that—even in her hungover state—she would kill to run her hands through. Her fingers touch the edges of his hair, which is quickly disrupted by the sound of a chuckle coming from the corner of the room. Her heart rate accelerated . . . maybe she would have to kill.
She quickly sits up—dropping Bludger in the process—not focusing on who the intruder was but rather on protecting them. (This was war.) Despite her wandless state, she begins uttering the first curse that comes to mind, ‘Furnun—’
‘Really, boils?’ The unfamiliar voice interrupts. The sound sending a sharp pain to her head. Bloody. Fucking. Whisky. After taking a moment for the throbbing to slow down, she notices the curly hair and the leather jacket from the night before. Her heart rate slows down, and she feels the body next to her move. So, she was finally meeting the notorious Sirius Black.
She heard stories about him during her time at Hogwarts. Stories about the grey-eyed boy who looked like he wanted to destroy the world, stories about the boy who seemed to hold a hatred for most people. She would hear girls whisper in the loos, comparing his beauty to that of the Greek gods: beautiful with pain and anger. Most people wondered how such an angsty person managed to claw their way into Hufflepuff in the first place (as ludicrous as it sounded, it was even rumored that he bribed the sorting hat itself). However, she hadn’t given him much thought during their overlapping years at Hogwarts, well . . . besides the fact that he hung out with the cute Hufflepuff chaser.
Yet, she could hardly regard him as someone capable of such angst as he made his way over to the bed she shared with said chaser, a grin on his face as his eyes shifted to the stuffed badger.
The corner of his mouth twitched. ‘Really, Prongs? You do that with Bludger present?’
She heard a groan, followed by the sound of the stuffed animal in question being thrown as James shifted onto his side. For a Quidditch player, you’d think he’d have better aim. But, she supposed this wasn’t the first time Sirius Black had uninvitingly disrupted his friend’s peace when the latter had company over—albeit this was likely the least eventful session he’s disrupted. Nonetheless, Lily laughed as she turned onto her side, now facing James. And without a shred of hesitation, she breathlessly—perhaps with a bit of dramatisation—said: ‘How dare you treat Sir Badger that way?’ With a pout, she reached for the wand that lied forgotten between them and summoned Bludger from the space he landed next to Sirius’s leg. ‘He deserves better,’ she said, clutching Bludger to her chest once more.
James eyed her, an eyebrow raised with his lips twitching now, ‘What are you going to do about that, Evans?’
Her eyes turned to him, gazing briefly at his lips. ’I—‘  The sound of a cough disrupted her. She threw an annoyed glanced at the boy who simply shrugged and smirked.
’Seriously,’ James uttered, sitting up and glaring at the unabashed party. ‘Don’t,’ James warned as a twinkle in Sirius’s eyes grew.
‘You’re no fun.’ Sirius pouted.
‘As much as I enjoy your company first thing in the morning, Padfoot, is there a particular reason you decided to grace us with your presence?’
Lily noticed the quick glance he shot her way before saying, ‘We’ve been called in to work.’ She took his raised eyebrow as an indication that it was time for her to get going.
She saw the pair of them exchange glances and quickly got to her feet.
‘Fine,’ Sirius said before turning around.
She shot James a puzzled look. ‘He doesn’t happen to be a legilimens, does he?’
James laughed as he got up as well, stretching his arm in a way that would have had anyone drooling. Really, men with attractive arms had an unfair advantage. She could image lic—. His reply interrupted her train of thought. ‘No, he’s just been around me for over a decade, so he basically knows my reactions to most things.’
‘Your fellow Hufflepuff.’ She picked up her shoes and dress from the floor before meeting his eyes again. ‘Does he have extensive Hufflepuff decor in his room, too?’
‘Oh, it’s much worse.’ He enunciated as he came closer to her. ‘Puts the entirety of Hufflepuff house to shame . . . I’ll ask him if I can give you a tour sometime, if you’d like.’ He ruffled his already distraught hair.
Bloody fucking hell, even his sheepishness was cute. That was not fair, no one should look so cute that her ovaries were at risk of exploding. Fuck.
‘Anytime.’
***
‘So, Lily—‘
‘Said the funniest thing,’ Sirius interrupted three weeks later.
James pouted from his place on Edgar Bones’s sofa, ‘That’s not what I was going to say.’
The former arched his eyebrow, ‘Oh, really?’
‘Well . . . she did owl me a funny story the other day. You know how—‘
Sirius sighed heavily, ’Just ask the bird out already, Prongs.’
’It’s not that easy. It’s not like I can just say “I think you’re brilliant and would love to take you out, but I’m actually a member of a super secret Anti-Voldemort organization and might be called in for secret missions at any moment. Also, the hours are terrible.”’ Sirius laughed. ’Plus,’ James continued. ‘Have you seen her eyes, Sirius? They’re so green. Like I have no bloody idea how I held it together that night.’
‘Post-mission adrenaline?’
‘Unless you slipped me some liquid luck.’
Sirius scoffed. ‘You think I would waste liquid luck on your love life?’ He shook his head. ‘No amount of luck could help you there.’
‘Oi, don’t make me jinx you,’ James teased.
‘What’d Padfoot do now?’ Remus asked, taking a seat next to James. Peter followed suit, taking a seat next to Sirius on the floor.
’The usual,’ James said at the same time that Sirius uttered, ‘Why do you always think I’m up to something?’
‘Because we literally made a map that says we’re up to something,’ Peter reminded him.
‘And, we’ve met you,’ Remus said with a knowing look.
Sirius pouted. ‘Prongs is in love with the bird he met at the pub a few weeks ago, and—like a good friend—I’m encouraging him to ask the bird out.’
‘I’m not in love,’ James objected as more Order member began infiltrating the livingroom.
All three of them shot him skeptical look; all three of them had experience with how fast and headfirst James fell in love.
‘I’m not,’ he repeated as Dumbledore began the meeting.
James’s mother had always had a saying about being careful what you say because things so easily become a reality. Had he known that, he would have said her named a long time ago, would have prayed it even.
The room quieted as she made her entrance. Her green robes appearing to swoosh around her, her red curls seeming to bounce energetically, and James couldn’t imagine anyone not instantly falling in love with her.
‘Lily Evans,’ he whispered.
‘Oh, this should be good,’ Sirius chuckled.
‘Ah, I’m glad you could join us tonight,’ Dumbledore said as Lily took a seat next to a tall, slender lady with striking, platinum blond hair. ‘I’d like all of you to give your warmest welcome our newest member, Miss Lily Evans.’ She gave a small wave and looked around to observe the other members. She thought she’d recognized a few members from Hogwarts—Professor McGonagall, of course . . .  a boy with mousy brown hair . . . and a boy with sandy brown hair who she thinks had been the prefect a few years her senior. She was a moment away from looking away before she noted the boy next to the former prefect.
‘Oh god,’ she whispered as she heard Dumbledore introducing her as a former Head Girl and current potioneer at the Ministry. Her hands began shaking as their eyes locked, their secret moment in the crowded room going unnoticed as Dumbledore continued with whatever logistics he had been discussing before her arrival.
‘All right, Evans?’ he mouthed. Everything stop around her for a moment.
Finally, she responded. ‘All right, Potter,’ she mouthed back.
She turned back to focus on Dumbledore, but a ball of anticipation bounced around in her stomach as she waited for the meeting to be over.
‘. . . and, lastly, James and Sirius, Lily will be joining you two on your next undercover mission.’
A torturous, earth gravitating, lovely, fucking bloody hell.
‘Yes, sir,’ she heard Sirius say, a hint of amusement in his voice.

You've already answered flaws, so what are the things you like most about Sirius? :)
Thanks for this (I always love your questions)😊😊
1. How deeply he loves. He pauses his murder plot, numerous times for Harry. To catch a glimpse of him at Privet drive, to watch him play Quidditch and buy him a firebolt.
2. How selfless he can be- leaving his tropical island to eat rats in a cave just so he can give Harry support.
3. His relationship with animals. Sirius, Crookshanks and Buckbeak are the only gang I’d ever join.
4. How clever he is.
5. How emotionally intelligent he is (although this also gives him the ability to be very cutting).
6. How resilient he is- surviving Azkaban and being on the run.
7. He’s funny- the couple of dry comments he makes are really funny.
There’s so much more, but that’s the few off the top of my head 😊

I've started thinking about "Reputation" again but had no idea where I was going with the story considering I wrote the first chapter about 4.5 years ago (how???), so I had to start chapter 2 again. However, today I ended up stumbling upon the original beginning of chapter 2 (only 200 words) on my hard drive, so that's interesting.

Okayyyyy, so I have a new oneshot idea I’m excited to write later this week. The title is “A Series of Unfortunate Breakups,” and it’s a Jily “Childhood Friends” muggle AU.
One line I’m excited for is: “You don’t have to see other people, but you can’t see me.”
It’s terrible and James sucks at breakups.

Hi, how are you? It's so wonderful to read your new writing again!! I was wondering if you were thinking of continuing your older stories, like Reputation? I loved that one a lot <3
Hello!! Sorry for the late response, I'm in grad school right now so sometimes my weeks are a bit hectic. But I'm doing well, thank you so much for asking!! I''m glad to hear that you've enjoyed my new writing. As for the question, I will be returning to old stories. I'm hoping to revamp "Disconnected" and I will definitely be continuing "Reputation." I think the hardest thing right now is that I was 20 when I started Reputation and I'm turning 24 next month, so it's weird to know where I was heading with the story. So before continuing it, I want to brainstorm and outline a bit. I'm hoping to have a new chapter for "Reputation" by March though.

Yessss. I’ve always headcannoned Sirius as aromantic and James as demisexual.
Aro / Ace / Aroace representation in The Marauders Fandom
First of all I'm not here to invalidate your headcanons or force you my own personal ones. You can headcanon any sexuality for any character. I'm just here to give my opinion.
The Marauders Fandom is known to be filled with queer people. We love The Marauders and give them our own struggles as queer people in a very yet heteronormative world that fits everyone into a gender role. We had found our comfortable place here.
As an Aromantic Asexual, I feel the The Marauders Fandom is lacking of Aromantic and Asexual representation. Or is very bad. At least in the side of the fandom I am used to.
We talk about Gays, Lesbians, Bis, Pans, Trans, Non Binary, Genderfluid characters. And we love creating headcanons about them.
And there's Aro Ace / Ace Peter.
Most of the fans that I've seen on TikTok, Tumblr and other platforms headcanon Peter in the ace espectrum. And that's totally fine. But as an aroace person, I really don't feel very well represented with Peter.
Peter is the most hated Marauder, because he betrayed his friends. Peter is usually portrayed as dull, onedimensional, someone who interacts too little with the rest of the Marauders. Even ATYD, the most popular Marauders fanfic now a days, doesn't make Peter a complex character. Remus, Sirius, James and the Marauders Girls, even Regulus have rich story lines, they experience relatable things, they have a back ground, personal problems, insecurities and such. Not Peter. He feels like a side character most of the time, or isn't even there.
Also, there's another side of Peter that I've seen a lot too. A phsyco Peter that murders Marlene and ends up betraying everyone because he felt powerful or he secretly hated them.
Now imagine being an Aro / Ace / Aroace Marauders fan and seeing that the most common representation is in this character. A dull character that everyone hates or don't care about, or a phsycopath.
For me, it just feels like Aromanticism and Asexuality are being invalidated. It feels like people put Peter into this spectrum just to include it, just as a default, because every other character is so rich and complex to be asexual or aromantic.
And we love to create more and more queer head canons . Pan James, Bi James, Bi Lily, Bi Remus, Gay Remus, Trans Remus, Nonbinary Dorcas, Pan Sirius, Genderfluid Sirius, Lesbian Marlene, Bi Mary, Trans Sirius, Trans James, Pan Regulus, Bi Regulus, Gay Regulus etc. But not about Peter. Peter is ace by default. Or at least that's what I feel.
Again if you headcanon Peter as ace, aro or both, that's completely valid. But we need to start having good representation in an Ace Peter. The struggles, the confusion, the fear of not being "normal" or not fitting in, perhaps Peter trying to have allosexual relationships and not being able to. You know what a mean? A complex character with a good story line that has the aro/ace/ aroace experiences. Not just a dull secondary character that everyone hates or ignores.
I personally don't headcanon Peter as aroace. I have my other personal headcanons. Trying to find comfort and representation for my sexuality and identity.
I don't know if other Aro / Ace / Aro Ace Marauders fans feel this way, but I feel like we need better representation in headcanons and fics. With Peter or any other character.
Thank you very much, have good day.

Mr. Winter
Here goes my contribution for December 2021's jilychallenge.
JILY CHALLENGE | @siriuslysnuffles vs @dizzy--bird
winter trope + "hold me please i'm cold oh wait you're too close i think i'm having heart palpitations bc since when were you hOT?"
can also be read on ffn | ao3
February 1977
Lily’s eyes roamed the common room as she made her way down the girls’ staircase. A couple third-years sat directly in front of the fireplace in their winter robes, giggling away. Her eyes moved to the middle of the room where a group of fifth-years consisting of Mary Macdonald and friends played Exploding Snaps with blankets wrapped around themselves. One of boys sneezed causing one of the cards to fall over—a small explosion ensued, singeing his eyebrows. Lily threw a pitiful smile his way. Her eyes finally made their way to the corner of the room where a recognizable black-haired boy sat.
She strolled up to him, a grin on her face. “Where’s the rest of your posey?”
“Hello to you, too, Evans,” Sirius said tapping his quill against the small table he made use of. Glancing up from the crossword, he offered her a small smile and motioned for her to take a seat (she did). A year ago, sitting next to Sirius Black would have garnered the pair quite a few stares. Now, people were used to the sight of Lily Evans and the Marauders. When she wasn’t around her best friend April, she could often be found working on puzzles with Peter, studying with Remus, booing James’ Quidditch practices with Sirius, or practicing spells with James by the lake. A year ago, she never would have thought that she could love these boys so much.
Sirius took her out of her thoughts, gaining her attention once more. “Remus is upstairs sleeping; poor bugger isn’t feeling well today. Peter is in detention for being late to McGonagall’s on Tuesday. And James scheduled a last-minute Quidditch practice before we defeat Slytherin next week.” He raised his eyebrows at her. “He should be back soon, if you were wondering.”
She gave him a look—the look that only friends who truly knew one other could decipher. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she lied. He shot her a knowing look but remained silent as she grabbed his newspaper from the table and separated the crossword from the rest of the Daily Prophet. She placed the crossword back on the table and began scanning the articles.
He focused his attention on the crossword once more, filling in another answer. “Nothing interesting today.”
“No deaths you mean?”
“Not much of anything—not sure whether that’s good news anymore.”
She opened her mouth to reply when the sound of footsteps approached and a new body slumped next to her, nudging her slightly.
James grinned down at her, “Hullo, Evans.” He shot a smile at his best friend, “Padfoot.”
“Potter,” she grinned back. “How was Quidditch practice?”
“Rather productive.” The corner of his lips turning up. “You see, when some people,” now grinning like the Cheshire Cat his eyes drifted to Sirius, “don’t boo my Quidditch practices, the team actually memorizes our moves.”
“Yeah, you should really work on that issue,” she quipped back, green eyes shining.
Sirius snickered as James gazed down at her affectionally.
“I should,” was all he said.
The James’ look, soft and in awe, sent a shiver down Lily’s spine—which is definitely, surely, one hundred percent platonic.
“Cold?” he asked.
Again, she lied. “A bit.”
Sirius grinned wickedly at her. A look his best friend missed. “It’s the coldest day of the year, Prongs.” Seeing she was bundled in her warmest winter coat with a red turtle neck underneath and her favorite maroon and gold scarf wrapped around her neck as many times as it would allow, it wasn’t surprising that Sirius wouldn’t let the cold comment pass. “You should probably get her a blanket.”
“Right,” James said standing up. “I should probably change anyway.” A moment later, he disappeared.
“Lily gave him a stern look, “Sirius.”
“What are you up to?”
“Nothing,” he said innocently—far too innocently. “As a friend,” he emphasized. “I thoughtfully suggested that our other friend should warm you up a bit, Evans.”
“Oh yes, how thoughtful and with no ulterior motive. How gracious of you.”
“I know.”
“You git.”
“I’m feeling so much love from you.” She couldn’t help but laugh.
“What’s so funny?” James asked, reclaiming the seat he had vacated. He wrapped a large blue blanket covered in white deer around the two of them, his shoulder brushing against hers. Another shiver passed through her.
“Are you all right, Evans?” he asked, concern in his voice.
“Fine, just cold,” she said before making a remark to Sirius that she only half-recalled, even as she said it.
He gave her a strange look before throwing his arm her shoulder and running his hand up and down her arm. “Is this okay?” he asked, a hint of blush creeping up his neck.
“Of course, friends—“ she cleared her throat, not sure where she was going with the rest of her sentence. Friends platonically put their arms around you and move their hands up and down your arm to prevent you from dying at the hands of Scottish winter because the look in their eyes made you shiver? Lily didn’t think she could pull that off so casually.
He was so close that she feared he could feel the way her heart thudded frantically, in such a way that she almost believed it was possible for her heart to escape her chest. After all, if magic was real, was one’s heart fleeing because James Potter looked at them like that really out of the realm of possibility?
And even as he chatted away with Sirius, he would look down at her with that look that she couldn’t quite understand. When he’d look away, she would watch him. Watch the way he’d talk with his free hand, as if he were a puppeteer putting on a show. Watched how animated he’d get to the point of his glasses almost, just almost flying off his face. It took all of her will to stop herself from adjusting them herself. For once, she could actually make out the spots where his dimples appeared and note the hints of green and blue in his hazel eyes. It was making her breathless. For Merlin’s sake, it wasn’t fair how fit she found him right now. Not fair at all. (Platonically, her brain reminded her. Liar, she felt her heart say with each palpitation).
He was so close that she could smell the faint hint of pine tree and mint and a mixture of an earthly smell (was that wood?) and leather whose combination had no right being as intoxicating as it was.
Without realizing it, she moved closer to him. (Sirius Black 1 | Lily Evans’ self-restraint 0).
“I’m going to see if Moony’s awake,” Sirius said swinging his bag over his shoulder.
“Bye,” Lily heard herself say.
There was a silent moment—a moment where she looked up at him and he gave her that smirk that she swore could save them all. For a moment, she tilted her head and for a millisecond he eyed her lips, leaning down. A second that came and left as the footsteps approached. “James! Lily!”
“Hi, Wormtail,” James glanced up at the smallest member of his group. “How was detention?”

Birthday Boy
Here's a fic that was supposed to be published on Sirius' birthday (grad school is chaotic as finals approach).
Enjoy and let me know what you think!
***
(November 3, 1977)
Despite falling on a Thursday—the most unforgivable day of the week next to Wednesday—Sirius’s last birthday at Hogwarts was nothing but extraordinary, to no one’s surprise.
Of course, no Marauder birthday could pass without the entire castle having to acknowledge the holiday, if only because it inconvenienced them. And believe it when I say that the Marauders did not believe in nepotism when it came to mischief. To the displeasure of most of Gryffindor Tower (and the paintings surrounding the tower), they were awoken by the sound of the Gray Lady’s horrid off-tune singing.
“For he's a jollllllllllllly goooood feeeellow, and so saayyy all of us.”
“Awful, the lot of you” Lily uttered once they got far away from the portrait that she no longer had to hold her palms against her ears.
James pulled her close to his side, placing a kiss to her forehead. “That’s not a nice thing to say, cariad.”
She rolled her eyes at him, a small smile tugging at the corner of her lips before turning to the birthday boy. “Did you know about this, Sirius?”
He batted his eyes at her innocently, “I had nothing to do with this.” He shared a grin with James, “Whose idea was it, Prongs?”
James paused in his strut to look toward where Remus and Peter were walking a few paces behind them. The pair seemed to be in a deep conversation about whether blood-flavored lollipops were made with real blood (the former believed that was ludicrous while the latter argued that made vampires seemed to be very fond of the treat). “Wormtail’s.”
“Brilliant,” Sirius grinned, letting his head fall back in laughter. He waited for the remaining Marauders to catch up and ruffled Peter’s mousy hair.
“Thanks, Wormtail.”
The smaller boy simultaneously blushed and glowed. “Well, there’s still a bit more.”
Lily’s voice carried from where she and James had continued making their way toward the Great Hall for breakfast. “How did you get the Fat Lady to agree to it anyways?”
“We told her it’d be a pity if no one got to hear her lovely voice.”
“Didn’t take much convincing after that,” Remus added. Sirius noted the usual look of mischief in his eyes and wondered how anyone could ever mistake his friend for anything other than a marauder, a troublemaker.
***
The moment they sat down at the Gryffindor table, Nearly Headless Nick approached them. Sirius resisted a grin as he began bellowing. Instead, Sirius bit into a piece of bacon as if a nearly headless ghost singing to him occurred every day.
“Forrrrrr he's a jolly good fellow,” the ghost screamed, startling the little ones at the table. “For he's a jolly good fellow,” Nick paused as if waiting for an applause, which James being the idiot he is, Sirius thought tenderly, obliged him. “And so say all of us / And so say all of us, and so say all of us / For he's a jolly good fellow, for he's a jolly good fellow / For he's a jolly good fellow.” He paused once more before concluding, “And so say all of us!”
“That was wonderful, Sir Nick,” Lily said through her place across from Remus. Sirius could see a handful of Hufflepuffs and Gryffindors cheering and, to his amusement, Professor Dumbledore applauding. He could swear he even saw the hint of a smile on the face of their headmistress.
“Well, Nick certainly does sing better than the Portrait of the Fat Lady.” Sirius admitted. Right when he was about to take a sip of his pumpkin juice, he saw something fly past him. Whispers started spreading as the inhabitants of the Great Hall turned to notice Peeves the Poltergeist heading toward the Slytherin table.
“Is this part of Sirius’ surprise?” Lily whispered, a hint of an edge to her voice.
“No,” James whispered back in confusion. His eyes meeting Remus’ for confirmation.
At that moment, Peeves dropped dungbombs in the direction of the seventh years. Sirius grinned as he saw the dungbombs hit Snape, Mulciber, and Avery.
“Best birthday ever,” Sirius roared.
“I heard they were rather rude to Peeves the other night,” Remus added, answering Lily’s previous question. “You’d think they’d know by now not to mess with a poltergeist.”
***
Sirius heard various ghosts the Marauders had bribed singing to him throughout the day. Some had stuck with the same song Sir Nicholas and the Fat Lady had sung while others had taken more creative liberties with the song. His favorite had been Moaning Myrtle’s rendition when he had stopped by the Prefect’s loo for a shower—courtesy of your best mate being HeadBoy—before dinner. Although, that had quickly turned into Myrtle bursting out into tears about how no one had ever sung to her on her birthday—not that she had one anymore, she was quick to add. That had made for an uncomfortable shower as he told her to bugger off.
However, his favorite part of the evening had finally arrived.
“A Sirius game of Quidditch,” he announced after arriving to the Quidditch field.
“How Sirius?” Lily asked with a small smirk.
“Very Sirius,” he responded.
“The rules, for new players,” he began.
“I wonder who he’s referring to,” Lily jested to James as she motioned to the other two Marauders to her right. James grinned at her, “No idea.”
“As I was saying,” he faux glared at them. “The rules for a Very Sirius Game of Quidditch ….”
As he got onto his borrowed broom, Sirius knew that being surrounded by the people he loved most in the world would always triumph any party or copious amount of alcohol. He smiled genuinely as he observed his friends, as he watched James trying to convince Peter to join his alliance after Lily proposed they should all-team up against James.
“I’ve been your mate for seven years,” he heard James argue.
Sirius flew off up to meet them, “Eh, I agree with Evans here. Four against Prongs sounds like an entertaining evening.”
“Gits,” James mumbled as he flew away from them.
“I mean, he is the birthday boy,” Lily shouted after him, tailing him with the bat firmly in her hands.

Happy birthday, Sirius Black!! Here's the little BlackEvans friendship moment we've all been waiting for. Enjoy! Also let me know what you think.
(January 1977; Sixth Year)
“This is ridiculous, Sirius,” Remus sighed, but, to no one’s surprise, complied with Sirius’ request of fetching a piece of parchment.
“Well,” Sirius said dramatically. “I need a notary to make it official and you’re very notar-ish.”
“If I had to guess,” Lily interrupted. “I think he’s talking about the contract, Sirius, not the notarization.”
He gave her a faux-stern look that was reminiscent of Professor McGonagall’s. “Well, that’s just ridiculous, Evans.”
She grinned at him affectionately, “Oh, yes, I’m the ridiculous one here.”
“Peter agrees with me.” He called over to the mousy-haired boy on the floor who seemed to be working on a puzzle of Lord Draben, “Don’t you, Wormtail?”
Peter finished joining two pieces together before replying: “Prongs said that if you ever asked me that I should run.” Lily giggled at the look of disbelief on Sirius’s face.
“Bloody prat,” Sirius mumbled. “After all, I do for him.” He sighed dramatically, clutching at his chest, “Words! Mere words! How terrible they were! How clear, and vivid, and cruel! One could not escape from them. And yet what a subtle magic there was in them!”
“Dorian Gray? Really?”
“It’s a classic, Evans.”
“I agree, I just didn’t realize you’d be a fan.”
He grinned, “Of course I’m a fan—Wilde writes nothing but master pieces.”
“While I’m always willing to discuss Oscar Wilde,” Remus began. “Let’s just get this absurdity over with, Padfoot, before James comes back.” He walked towards Lily and Sirius with a piece of parchment whose ink had not finished drying quite yet.
“Don’t get your knickers in a twist, Moony,” Sirius teased, motioning for him to read from the parchment.
“I, Lily Evans, herby agree to the following terms of, what shall be referred to as, the James Potter Custody Contract”—“How original,” Lily snorted.—“One, Sirius Orion Black”—“Did you have to include my middle name, Moony?” Sirius interrupted with a pout.—“Stop interrupting, you two.”
Remus cast them a look reproachful look, “As I was saying, Sirius Orion Black remains custody of James Fleamont Potter for two-thirds of Hogsmeade visits. However, he is willing to share James during those two-thirds if Miss Evans agrees to partake in any mischief during the aforementioned time.”
Lily aimed a grin at Sirius, “How generous.”
“I know,” he smirked. “I do so much for the people.”
Remus cleared his voice.
“Continue,” Lily said, amusement clear in her voice.
“Two, Lily Evans must keep any information she discovers during her time with the Marauders—Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew, Sirius Black, and James Potter—a secret or face dreadful consequences.”
Lily raised an eyebrow. “Dreadful?” she questioned.
“Death,” Sirius nodded ominously.
“Death!” Peter squeaked, his hand tightening on his remaining puzzle piece.
“We do not mean death,” Remus said with an eye roll. “I’ll keep reading. “Three, Sirius Black gets custody of James for every major holiday, but Lily Evans is invited as long as she agrees to tease James.”
Remus waited a moment, expecting an interruption. When none followed, he continued: “Four, Lily Evans must visit the Marauders—especially Sirius Black—at least once during break.” Remus looked up to see Lily’s eye begin to water and the way she squeezed Sirius’s hand. “And lastly, when Lily Evans and James Potter begin dating, this contract will be null and a new contract will need to be drawn.”
No one questioned the use of “when”. There was no use denying it when some things were inevitable, things fathead to happen even—or maybe especially—when everything seemed pointed in the opposite direction.
“Give me a bloody quill,” Lily demanded, wiping a stray tear from her eye. Sirius grinned down at her affectionally, handing her a bloody quill.
“Signature and initials, please,” Sirius said, a playful spark in his eyes.
“You’re a git,” she utter while elegantly initialing the parchment.
“I’ve been called worse.”
“Don’t doubt it.” He roared with laughter, a laugh that could rival a Gryffindor’s. She handed him the quill, “Your turn.”
He took the quill from her and signed the document in the same fashion Lily assumed a diplomat would. “It’s official,” he said cheerfully. “You’re one of us, Red.” He threw an arm around her shoulder.
“Merlin, what did I get myself into.”
“Being around Padfoot can do that to you,” Remus said sympathetically.
“Tosser,” Sirius mumbled.
“A minor side effect,” Peter said.
“Do I at least get a better nickname than Red?” Lily pouted at them.
“We’ll do that at the next group meeting, Red.” He grinned.
They heard the boys’ door open rather loudly and could hear cheers coming from down below. They looked at confusion as James appear, broom in hand.
James stared at them with a look of shock on his face. “Were you tossers not at the match?”
