What's ur opinion on killing off the main character at the end of a series?

Killing off the main character.

The only time you should ever kill of your main character, is if the story can’t possibly end any other way. Allow me to explain:

If you reach the end of your writing or outlining, and suddenly go “hmm, you know what, if I kill the main character, it’ll be a huge shock to the reader, and that’ll be cool” then you should stop yourself right there.

If however, you reach the end, and realize that the most impactful follow through for your main character’s overall development and the heavily interwoven themes of the plot involves the character dying, then you’re doing yourself a disservice by keeping them alive.

Character death in general is a very tricky thing to pull off well, and when the character you’re killing is your main character, then any wrong step might lead to a reader too angry at you to consider picking up your next book.

Bad reasons to kill off your main character:

For the shock value. 

Because it’s edgy or “original.”

It sounded like a cool thing to do.

You have an epic death scene in your head.

Its a dark book so the main character “must” die. 

You don’t know what to do with the main character after the climax.

You want that sweet, sweet angst.

Good reasons to kill off you main character:

The path they’ve set themselves on from the beginning, (whether good or bad), has always been leading up to this, to the point where the most (or sometimes only) satisfying outcome is for that character’s ultimate demise or total self sacrifice.

The theme of the book is dependent on or otherwise heavily linked to the main character’s death.

For a deeper look, think about your favorite death scenes. Where was the character at emotionally when they died? Where were they in their character arc? What else could have happened to them if they hadn’t died, and would this other path have felt more satisfying? What themes did their death build upon? (For non-main characters, what internal and external development did their death create in the characters around them?)
