Demystifying the Moon
Tumblr media
Phases of the moon over the ocean. Artwork by Raven E. Marshall
Article By Sabriyya Ghanizada for EcoNews.
The word lunacy is derived from the latin word, lunaticus, which translates to moonstruck. Fables of the moon causing intermittent insanity in humans have taken on many iterations; for centuries tales of werewolves have been told around the campfire and silver screen alike, to warn of the mythical creatures’ arrival at the full Moon. Some theorize that our bodies being made up of 60 percent water equates to an emotional or physical effect on humans since the Moon has proven effect on the Earth’s tides. While there has been very little in the western and scientific world view of the Moon to prove any of these claims, there is data to back up that the light from a full Moon can make for more sleepless nights. One thing is for sure, the Moon, Earth’s one and only natural satellite, affects Earth’s tides and its light can have effects on biological rhythms here on Earth...
Though you may be familiar with the full Moon and new Moon, the Moon experiences several phases throughout its orbit. Lecturer in the department of Physics at Cal Poly Humboldt, Tyler Mitchell, explained the cycle that a moon goes through in an entire month, or a ‘moonth’ if you will. “If we are starting at the new Moon,” Mitchell said, “we start with the waxing crescent and move on to the first quarter Moon, then its half Moon, waxing gibbous, onto the full Moon. From the full Moon it wanes to waning gibbous and the third quarter Moon waning crescent back to the new Moon.”

Piecing Together Humboldt County’s Housing Problem
By: Sabriyya Ghanizada for EcoNews
There is a housing crisis in California and Humboldt County (HumCo) is no exception. With Cal Poly Humboldt prospecting to double its enrollment, it will impact an already scarce market. Housing in HumCo greatly affects students and faculty of Cal Poly Humboldt, with many struggling in their search for sufficient accommodation. One reason is that there is not enough supply to meet the demand. To mitigate this, Cal Poly, the local government and community members are each working as stakeholders in the effort to create solutions that will cultivate sustainable housing that is made with eco-conscious ideals.

Feminist Icon Dorothy Pitman Hughes Visits Campus
Tumblr media
Photo & Article By Sabriyya Ghanizada for The Viking, Long Beach City College’s Student-Run Newspaper. May 2, 2019.
Dorothy Pitman Hughes – activist, co-founder of Ms. Magazine and overall icon – spent a day split into three parts discussing social issues with the community of Long Beach City College on May 2 thanks to the help of Trustee Virginia Baxter, counselor Debra Petersen and a few generous donors and event organizers.
“This all started with a phone call,” Petersen said.
Possibly most recognized for her 1971 portrait in Esquire magazine with famed feminist Gloria Steinem, Dorothy Pitman Hughes’ true work was in was in child advocacy and women’s rights which began early on in her life.
“I got in the women’s movement at the age of 8. I found my university sitting under the porch hearing the women of my community talk. That’s how I got to know what was contributing pain to the community. That’s how I became the fighter I am now,” Hughes said.
Born in Lumpkin, a small town in Georgia, Hughes family stayed satiated by planting crops and raising pigs.
She explained to the circle that because Lumpkin was segregated, instead of receiving U.S. currency, the black population were given a currency coined ‘bozine’ to use in the shops in town.
“It was sad, but I grew up listening to the complaints of the women. I just thought it was my job to make a change,” Hughes said.
