Also I must say: I do not like the way Collapse characterized John. Love his interactions with Joseph but I think characterizing his sadistic tendencies as some kind of struggle with violent impulses is actually pretty contradictory with what we are told in canon.
What John tells us in his bunker is "I spent my whole life looking for more things to say 'yes' to. I opened up every hole in my body and when those were filled, I created more. But it was Joseph who shower me how selfish I was being. Always receiving, always taking. The best gift isn't the one you get, its the one you give." That, to me, paints a pretty clear picture. As an outgrowth of his childhood abuse John spent his adulthood engaging in self-harming behaviors, seeking out scenarios where he could recreate that helplessneess and release as a way to feel cleansed. Its pretty clear to me that these habits were primarily self-destructive, even submissive in nature ("always receiving, always taking"). "Things to say yes to" isn't quite synonymous with the American Psycho kind of picture that Collapse paints, John seems to have specifically sought out scenarios where he would lack control, where he would be hurt and preyed upon. Until Joseph convinced him to instead enact those desires on others. Take everything that was done to you, and do it to other people, not only to cleanse them, but to finally save yourself from the sin inside you.
Like to be clear: this isn't me saying John wouldn't do malicious cruel things without Joseph's interference. But making him a knife-happy bad dominant stereotype with an obsession for strangling people both contradicts how the main canon tends to characterize him, and also imo whitewashes Joseph's manipulation. If John is a collection of violent impulses, Joseph becomes not one of his abusers, but his handler. Its kind of a consistent problem with the Collapse where it is wants to continually frame the actions of the siblings as what they probably would have done anyways. Joseph is wrong for gaining by it, but it shies away from pointing out where he not only encouraged it, but at times redirected it into specific, more beneficial channels.
John had his brother never showed up likely wouldn't have been a very good person! He would still be a corrupt lawyer deeply fixated on his own desires and with a very destructive personal theology. But he does not pick up the knife to use on others unless his big brother tells him to.

Biannual rewatch of the Collapse DLC. I get the distinct impression that the writers didn't. Quite understand Faith and defaulted to stock abused cult princess tropes. Obviously every Herald is a lot more volatile and vulnerable around Joseph than they are around the Deputy but Faith I think winds up reading much more. Hapless and naive. What was interesting about Faith in FC5 to me is she always seemed like she was a little more aware of her circumstances than she wanted to admit to herself. More than that she was a talented manipulator and extremely lucid, even holding Joseph at arm's length to avoid jeopardizing her own power/repeating the mistakes which got her predecessors killed. I think there could have been something interesting done if it had dove a little more into Joseph's cognitive dissonance on the subject, on his mental insistence that she remains his sweet innocent (dependent) Faith its clear that she's playing his own game back at him, telling him what he needs to hear to ensure her own survival

If there ever comes another Far Cry 5 renaissance though I have to get more of you onboard with the fact that Nick Rye is bar none the most fuckable man in Hope County. I'm not speaking to you from a feminist malewife "he worships his lady and thats SEXY 🥵🥵🥵" perspective. I speak to you from a sheer animal kind of lust here my heart sank so severely when we found out this man was married. No ill will towards Kim she is also hot and funny but I was backdrafting proposals watching him speak soothingly to his stupid yellow plane. I need him bad

thinking about this again. The thing about Sharky's writing is he's basically just another iteration on the Hurk playbook. Make a guy who's epic and whimsical enough that you, presumed dude player, can engage in antics that appeal to your inner 12 year old. But also make him pathetic enough that he's not a threat to your status as the chad alpha, make him stupid or bumbling or sexually weird or a hick. Something that makes it clear that he will be wingmanning you into eternity whenever the manchild act bores you.
Where they fucked up with Sharky is making him read as both inexplicably faggy and also like. Nonthreatening to the point of being inexplicably adorable. You have to zone out every three comments before he says something with some mid 2000s bro bigotry (brogotry) but between his transparent desire to eat pussy and "you got eyes I could swim in for days". Like what were we as Tumblrinas supposed to do but adopt him. Get him a goddamn Miku binder the author is dead welcome to the revels America.
I'm generally not a fanon supremacy person I generally find the process of turning a character into a fandomized oc pretty obnoxious but Sharky Boshaw is an exception. Every piece of fanart drawn by a transparent bisexual makes me forget this man was written to be epic by straight dudes in 2018. Please give him ADHD even harder its important to my well-being

The faster we tumblrize the more I forget how much he resembles men I grew up around and how much those actually suck to be with. Give him more piercings and fluffy hair. He listens to Mitski now. I sound like I'm being ironic I 100% am not

Had an unfortunate incident today when I was hanging out with Sharky and Staci in the Wolf’s Den and Staci (recently liberated) was having a mild breakdown and chanting to himself “WE ARE MEAT, WE’RE ALL MEAT”
and Sharky chose that exact moment to chime in with “Jerky is the Lords food”

Lrb relevant something about the way each brother is constantly reiterating their trauma in an attempt to subdue it.
Jacob, most direct and long-term recipient of their father's abuse, surrounds himself with people he's conditioned to become violent at the drop of a hat.
But its ok, because he controls the trigger this time.
Joseph, left abandoned by the splitting of their family, creates conditions for his new Family that are so untenable it's only a matter of time before any given member tries to leave him.
But it's ok, because being forced to constantly negotiate, gaslight, and threaten people into sticking with him makes him feel like he has power over his isolation this time.
John reliving his childhood torture every goddamn day, carving himself up when he can't carve up others and having his fear of damnation dangled over his head by his brother god. Constantly repenting, constantly atoning, never forgiven.
But it's ok, because he holds the knife this time. When you hold the knife, you get to say when it stops, and you get to extract sin from others rather than have it extracted from you.

I know he was like suicidal or whatever but instead of just slumping back and dying menacingly would it have killed Jacob to wrestle us into the dirt a little bit before he went

Not to discount the importance of mental health services but it is a little funny to me when people explain their no cult AUs as like "The Seeds went to therapy" like the only thing needed to interrupt that chain of events was some twice a month talk sessions. Maybe a little CBT thrown in for flavor. Damn guys you almost overreacted there :/

John Seed is so much of a character because there are so many things wrong with him but when you look at him in the context of the narrative framework its like

My relationship with Jacob Seed. You know those movies about a guy and an older man where the older man is his tough as nails mentor in a dangerous line of work. Doesn't approve of him at all initially while the main character is like fuck this old timer I'll show him. But over the course of their journey they develop grudging respect, friendship, and eventually some deeply daddy-issued homoeroticism unexplained by science. And then at the end the older man dies or retires and the main character marries his hot daughter who's been in like two scenes beforehand. Mainly to establish she's hot and a chip off the old block and its somehow even gayer because its like you would marry his blood just to touch him by proxy.
Its like that do you guys find this relatable

i think about john and dutch a lot, and i read a really great meta by @paperclipbracelet the other day that made me think a lot.
often times when the dynamic between dutch and john is discussed, people asses that john would have worshipped dutch in return. but what if he didn’t? what if part of what drew dutch to john was the chase and subsequent dopamine hits that came with succeeding in that relationship. arthur makes it easy, all dutch really has to do is call him “son” and arthur would throw himself off a cliff. literally. but with john, i wonder if part of what drew dutch in was figuring him out. both arthur and john are pretty introspective individuals, but i don’t think it’s outlandish to say arthur is a bit easier to figure out as a person and is more emotionally and socially in tune. (of course, they’re both quite awkward and withdrawn, and john he clearly grows a little more into his own by the events of rdr1)
i can imagine dutch feeling like he’s taking on some great challenge in deciphering what makes john tick and how to get him to regard him in the same respect arthur so easily does. when he “succeeds” its like a great triumph. he dotes on him, he goes easy on him, he talks him up, whether it's “deserved” or not because what he learns is this motivates arthur in turn as well. arthur vies for the attention dutch will so frivolously give to john, and dutch notices how much more he does what he’s withholding.
where arthur is like clay, easily molded, john was like stone that dutch needed to chip away at.
