Discussion 4: Rhetoric Analysis
I’ve been a small fan of FKA Twigs, her song Cellophane I didn’t expect to be good at first but one sad 3am rainy night and it immediately became one of my favorite songs by her. I still wasn’t super familiar with her discography so I decided that picking up this article would explain more about her to see if it was worth checking her out a bit more. As a first impression, I’m immediately really impressed with the UX of the article. UX design is really overlooked when it comes to blogs and articles. It is super under-appreciated and I was really interested in how this blog was done specifically. The design is visually appealing, striking enough to maintain reader interest.
When we look at the article itself, we are immediately hit with a video in FKA Twigs. Setting us up for an example of Pathos in a second. She dressed in what I might assume to be a Geisha or some type of clothing dating back to southeast asian culture. Looking at it from a different angle, it also reminds me personally of somewhat middle eastern Turkish dancers. Now looking at this, it paints FKA Twigs in this ethereal vail of who she is and how her music is influenced by a mythical sense of herself. Overall, Myers' article is an appeal to Pathos. His use of GIF, Image, and Videos to take up the entire screen is intentional to make the reader see Twigs in a more glorified light. His appeal to Pathos takes form towards the middle of the article, where he writes about the consequences of two of Twigs' former celebrity relationships. The most noticeable of her partners is Robert Patterson, who is most well known for his role in Twilight as Edward, didn’t emotionally support or shield her from the massive amount of internet or media harassment she got while they were dating. So giving a lot of context into her music makes her a lot more emotionally relatable to her audience, allowing for others to want to emotionally relate to her songs. Alongside that, we get  a small glimpse into her personal life. She watches Love Island, plays with her dog, and sings her favorite Frank Ocean song. People emotionally connect to artists that they find relatable plus we use our own sense of Ethos. Since her status of being an artist, we the public whose line of separation doesn’t know how to Adequately separate celebrities from our IRL friendships, will apply our own sense of credibility to the artist. So we take everything they say as a very honorable source.
Overall, I think this article is great at applying Pathos and Ethos to it by letting us see into the personal and professional life of FKA Twigs and seeing how both of these perspectives and aspects of her life influence each other into creating a somewhat balanced version of herself. It was an interesting read for sure and it makes her persona as an artist make a lot of sense.

So I'm entering the Sing Fandom for the first time and honestly this is one of the best fics I've read today. Can't wait to see more out of you.
Hey, can you write a (if you like) "what if" fanfiction? For example: the audition didn't work out so that Johnny wasn't accepted. But the robbery worked with the 25 million...🙈And at some point he confesses to his father about singing
(The story takes place during the heist in the movie. Disclaimer: I don’t own the movie Sing.)
Johnny was waiting for his family at the meeting spot. The thirty seven minutes seemed to drag on. His dad thought he was nervous about the heist when he was quiet the whole way there, but that was only part of it. He turned on the radio, hoping to take his mind off his problems. He turned on the radio and heard the song he auditioned to. He quickly turned the radio off. He sat in silence until his family came. They sped away.
“We did it!” His dad cheered. Johnny winced at the loud cheering of his family.
“What are you so serious about?” Stan laughed.
“Nothing, just glad it actually worked.” Johnny muttered.
(One week later)
Johnny came in from skateboarding to see his family planning another heist.
“Don’t we have enough from our last job? We could put that money to something like turning this into an actual car garage or anything.” Johnny asked.
“I know you’re scared, but we’re the best at this.” Barry said.
“Yeah, someday you’ll even be able to join us on a heist as in actually go into the place.” His dad said.
Johnny stared shocked at his dad. He looked at the faces of his family, expecting him to be happy about this.
“No.” He said.
“I know you’re nervous, but this is the family business, you knew this was going to be your role sooner or later.” His dad said.
“It gets easier with time.” Stan offered helpfully.
“I don’t want to be in your gang!” Johnny shouted. With that he ran off. Johnny’s dad followed him.
“What are you talking about? Is this about you being impatient about not being promoted fast enough or are you rally that nervous about your role?” His dad shouted at him.
“It has nothing to do with that!” Johnny shouted. “I never wanted to be in your gang! I want to be a singer.”
“What?” Johnny’s dad asked.
“I tried out for that contest at the Moon Theatre, it doesn’t matter since I didn’t get in, but I don’t want this life anymore. If you really want to do this, I can’t stop you but count me out.” Johnny said, the anger subsiding. He looked at his dad, hoping he would understand. Tears formed in his eyes.
“If you are not going to be part of the family business; then you’re not part of the family.” His dad growled. Johnny looked at the garage. He thought about all the times he spent with his family. He didn’t know his mom so he knew that if he left, he’d be alone.
“Come on, son, we can figure out what role would be best for you.” His dad said. “We can even just keep you as a lookout.”
Johnny thought about it. He could just go back to the way things were. He saw something in hid dad’s eyes; fear. He could tell his dad was worried he’d turn his back on family, but not enough that he didn’t mean what he said.
“I’m sorry, but I can’t do this anymore.” Johnny said. He hurried away.
As he ran, he wiped tears out of his eyes. The argument still fresh in his mind. He sat on a bench, thinking about what he was going to do.
“Are you alright?” He heard a voice ask. He looked up to see Mr. Moon.
“Yeah, I’m fine.” Johnny said, wondering he would care about him.
“You auditioned for the show, didn’t you?” He asked.
“Yeah. That has nothing to do with this though.” Johnny said. Buster thought about this for a moment.
“It’s getting late, shouldn’t you be heading home soon?” He asked. Johnny sighed at that.
“Things are complicated.” Johnny admitted. The two of them sat in silence for a minute.
“I need a second chance to audition, or at least work at the theatre. I can design sets or anything really.” He offered. Buster looked confused at him.
“Are you sure you’re alright?” He asked. Johnny sighed.
“I told my dad about the audition. He wanted me to be in his family business instead of being a singer and told me that if I refused, he wouldn’t see me as his son.” Johnny admitted. Buster gasped at that.
“It doesn’t matter. I made my choice and I’m not going back.” Johnny said before Buster could say anything.
“Do you still have the song you tried to audition with?” Buster asked.
“Yeah? Johnny replied, wondering where this conversation was going. Buster smiled.
“Rehearsal is at nine o’clock tomorrow. Show up, prepared to sing that song and I’ll handle the rest.” Buster promised.
“Thank you, Mr. Moon; but why would you be willing to do that for me?” He asked.
“I know what it’s like to be at rock bottom.” Buster said, “The good thing about that is that there is only one way left to go and that’s up.”
“Thank you, Mr. Moon. I’ll be there.” Johnny promised. Buster smiled at him and left.
After a few minutes of thinking, Johnny’s phone rang. He checked the caller ID before answering and saw it was Barry.
“Barry?” He said, answering the phone.
“I talked to your dad; he agreed to let you stay at the garage still but he still won’t see you as a son. Are you sure you don’t want to reconsider joining the family business?” He said.
“No, I’ll go back to the garage but I have my own dreams.” Johnny said.
“Alright.” Barry agreed. Johnny walked back to the garage with one thought on his mind.
“When he sees me perform, then he’ll understand, I’m sure of it.”
