Gluck - “O del mio dolce ardor” Teresa Berganza, mezzo-soprano
Happy early birthday to Christoph Willibald von Gluck, born 2 July 1714 in Bavaria: a major reformer of opera in the 18th Century, and otherwise distinguished by sharing the birthday of yours truly (though he had it first, and by some margin, I must admit).
Most every accompanist and vocal student knows “O del mio dolce” as one of Schirmer’s “24,” and one of my biggest pet peeves as a vocal coach and accompanist is when a singer walks into a first rehearsal wanting to take this aria at a ridiculously fast tempo like q = 100 or some such madness–sometimes even having gotten the idea from a voice teacher. It happens all the time.

From 1961 she began a long association with the Metropolitan Opera, where she was the first African American to be a leading performer.
