one of my favorite things about A Series of Unfortunate Events is the way it approaches the ideia of "noble" and "villainous" people.
murder, for example, is something that could very easily be discarded as a villainous act, but those extremes are never used as measurement, because the Volunteers understand the complexity of situations where one must commit a terrible act in order to survive. they understand the nuance behind right and wrong.
so, how do they define the difference between Volunteers and Enemies, between Noble People and Villains?
villainous people are those who purposefully take a glass out of the coaster and leave it at the wooden table to make a ring. they are those who make no effort to hold open the elevator doors for someone who has their hands full. they are those who mock people when they express an opinion or ask for help. they are those who refuse to read or otherwise seek information and just go around enforcing their harmful ideals onto other people. they are those who don't say 'thank you' when served by a waiter at a restaurant, and who never say 'good morning' to the bus driver.
villainous people are those who are constantly given opportunities to be decent and actively choose not to be.
meanwhile, the noble people aren't this indescribable heroes who have never done wrong in their lives. they the people who seek and share knowledge. they are those who offer someone tea when they had a rough night. they are those who give you space to share your opinions and ideias and have respectful discussions about it. they are those willing to offer a helping hand for those who need. they are those who stand up against harmful ideas, or at the very least try to with all their might. they are those who create and consume art and bond over it.
being noble is about taking every opportunity you can to be kind, and to turn that kindness into routine, but it is not about having never done something bad.
and it is also not just about being well-intended. there's no point to being a good person 'deep down' if your actions and their impacts are nothing but harmful. there's no point in never pulling the trigger if you're still the one setting up the target and yelling 'shoot', or if you simply close your eyes and ignore the spilled blood.
being good is about doing the best you can.
you are noble enough. as long as you're trying, as long as you choose to be kind when there's room to be, even if it's hard, you are noble enough.

i think the reason i love studio ghibli as much as i do is because it encompasses everything i love about life. wearing clothes that make you feel young and free that you can run and jump and climb trees in. the sense of peace that only comes from sitting on a train watching scenes move by the in windows, walking through the city at night, reading on a bench. the way there is so much grief and pain and hardship in each movie, and the world being torn apart but in spite of that, there is wholesomeness and warmth in bowls of noodles and dinner with your family and singing loudly without worrying about what your voice sounds like, and if you love someone enough it doesn’t matter that the world is falling apart around you. it’s about romanticising the little things in life, the hot mug of tea, that moment in the streetlight in the rain, the sunrise looking pretty through your little window; and it’s about the quiet, soft, warm moments you share with other people through those. those the things i cling onto in life, the small moments of joy that make life worth living.

I'm finally watching banana fish and all I have to say is Ash is WAY too good of a person for all he's been put through. he doesn't kill people when it isnt't necessary, he cares for those around him, he was ready to put his life at risk for Eiji after knowing him for 5 minutes, his first instinct when he found out that Shorter bretrayd them was being mad at himself for putting them at risk and recognizing that Shorter didn't make that decision lightly and they probably had some sort of power over him. the way he hugged Michael and apologized for making him have to remember that night?? he gave the kid the apology he never fucking got for himself. he's too good. he's way too goddamn good.
he's proof that all those sad backstorys for villains is just bullshit 'cause that kid -may I remind you he's fucking 17- has not known a second of piece in over 10 years and he's still one of the most kind hearted and level headed people I've ever seen, and he really didn't have to be. I've never been so upset and just straight up angry watching an anime in my life. every single one of those absolutely disgusting men who took advantage of him CAN CATCH THIS MF HANDS
