could you tell us some Red Hawke stuff? I’m really curious to see how you would write a red hawke. (I also want to see because I rarely see red Hawke’s and I’m sorta wanting to write one myself, but am unsure how haha)

I fucking love red Hawkes.

Putting this under a cut while I vomit red Hawke meta at you. 

In particular I love the red warrior dynamic. I usually play warriors as being the most directly confrontational – rogues, more inherent problem solvers; and mages more practiced in self-control, but warriors just bull-rushing into things head first, consequences be damned. So if you combine that with a character who is both angry/hurt and deeply fearful, I think you can get a Hawke that simmers at a low level of violence pretty constantly. Red Hawkes flirt with being the anti-hero of their own stories. (Think renegade Shepard if you play Mass Effect.) Plus I tend to play red warrior Hawkes as aggressively pro-mage (even more so than my mage Hawkes).Overall I think Red Hawkes are still nuanced. Not just aggressive, or evil or mean, but reactionary. 1000% DONE WITH THIS SHIT. The kind of person who is apologizing a lot in the side-lines after being a dickhead (and I think who at the end of the night has a lot of internalized regrets) but also fiercely protective and loyal and willing to be front-and-center when shit blows up. Plus there are some pretty badass moments/actions that are reserved for Red Hawkes, like face punching the Rock Wraith Boss in the deep roads.

The first thing Red Hawke encounters (any Hawke really) is loss – the loss of a sibling. I play Margot as having been closer to Carver than to Bethany. I think a warrior Hawke got paired early on with their brother and were taught early on to protect the mage of the family. Coming from a mage father, this might have even been their defining purpose to an unhealthy degree. And then Carver’s gone, and for Margot it’s like missing a limb, and then Hawke’s personal story continues to be one of loss and failure. (DA2 follows the trilogy formula where the second installment is one where the heroes end that story segment on a loss – think Original Star Wars, LOTR… etc.) And while I re-loaded the fuck out of my game to keep my sibling alive, I accidentally killed them in the deep roads on my first playthru, and I think that has always had an effect on how I view Hawke’s (particularly red Hawke’s) story. I love that DA2 gives Hawke a new family, but it does so as it’s actively tearing out everything that Hawke once had.And I think that chips away at Hawke’s ability to control their own worst personality traits. People are pretty reactionary when their fearful, and I see red Hawkes as being pretty terrified at the prospect of more loss, and more failure, and thus more fuck you consequences be damned mindset. And it just a good thing that given the nature of the game, so much of what Hawke needs to accomplish is through physical conflict, because other wise, Red Hawke’s would be so fucked.I had Margot friendmance Anders, (I am frankly not a fan of the rivalmance with anyone except for Sebastian and to a lesser extent, Fenris)  but I ship all the ships, and have thought through the dynamic with a lot of the other love interests. But I love the Anders/ red-Hawke dynamic. I think Anders pre-justice is exactly the kind of person Margot needs, caring, selfless, optimistic, light-hearted, and well versed in personal tragedy. But I think Vengeance-Anders, (particularly when Vengeance takes control) is downright unhealthy for her – they’re too much alike in their base, reactionary desires. I’ve always seen DA2 Anders as a smeary sort of personality that weaves between the two extremes of his state of being. And I think both he and Margot get to a place where they’re all fuck it, everything sucks, this terrible, self-destructive thing might as well happen, because at this point I don’t know what else to do. Anders remains one of the last people that Margot can be truly vulnerable and tender around, while also being wrapped around him with a big sign that reads: Mine. If you hurt this, you die. And it’s fucking poetic that at the end of the story they both sort of have nothing but each other.So like, that’s my view of Red Hawkes. :)
