You Knew What You Were Getting Into
Chapter four- I Can’t Forgive You
Tumblr media
(GIF not mine)
Back in the betting shop you sat around the table with the rest of the family, a very obvious tension around the room as you took a seat next to Polly, opposite Tommy. For the first time he actually looked uncomfortable, he knew he’d done wrong. He knew he’d hurt you in a way he couldn’t make up for.
The pain you were feeling was insane, the betrayal. You’d rather have your eyes taken by his cap that was still sitting on his head. You could hardly look at the man without seeing her with him.
Tommy cleared his throat and stood up offering people glasses of whiskey, Ada refused, the rest of you couldn’t grab a glass quick enough. He sat back down moving his glass around in his hand before speaking up,
“I’ll go first. I think I have a lot of explaining to do.”
He looked at you as he took a mouthful of whiskey,
“Y/N. There isn’t anything I can say to make this better.”
You bit your lip. You wanted to tear into him, but you stayed seated. The better person. You let him speak.
“What I did to you as a husband is unforgivable, I know that. I wasn’t thinking straight.”
He sighed,
“I lost sight of what makes me a better person, one too many drinks, a really bad day and she was there.”
That hurt you. You were always there for him, you’d do anything for him. When he woke up in sweat after terrible dreams, you would sit up with him, rock him back to sleep like a child, he showed a vulnerable side to you that he showed to no one else, to hear he’d had a bad day and she was there was a kick in the teeth.
“You’re my wife, Y/N. And I’m sorry I’ve wronged you.”
“How dare you.”
You shook your head taking your own gulp from your glass. The tension around the table was ridiculous. The rest of them didn’t know why they had to sit in on this. It seemed like a private affair they shouldn’t have been listening in on.
John cleared his throat and spoke up,
“Look, Tommy, I really think we should leave you two to talk this out together.”
You regained your cool and patted your skirt down,
“No. It’s okay John. This is a family meeting after all.”
You glared at Tommy. It was his idea to have everyone here. Part of you wondered if that was so he had a layer of protection. Something to stop you screaming at him, but he wouldn’t be so lucky. You’d had enough.
“You think you can just swan back in and claim me as yours again? Just because you saved me from some warehouse that was also your fault.”
You slapped your hands on the table, standing up. Nearly knocking your chair back onto the floor,
“You are not a good man Tommy. I know you. I see though you. You use everyone, everyone that fucking loves you. You use us all for your benefit even if that means one of us getting hurt.”
Everyone was staring at you. Polly seemed somewhat impressed, little Y/N sticking up for herself for once. You dealt with Tommy and his wrongdoings, you stayed a faithful wife through everything. You’d never hurt him in the way he hurt you. After everything. Everything you’d been through together, sleeping with Grace  really was the final straw and he was staring to realise that. You couldn’t forgive  him for that. It wasn’t something you could ever forget.  Not with her still working in the Garrison, not with him still going there. For all you knew, they were still at it. He liked having someone to go home to, a silly wife that would dote on his every need. Wash his clothes, make him food, be there for intimacy whenever he wanted, be his fucking secretary, nurse his wounds. He liked having someone there for him. Someone that was stupid enough to never leave.
“You push everyone away Tommy,”
You sat back on your seat, calming down. The last thing you wanted to do was show yourself up, though you thought that may have already been done.
“You carry on like this And you’re going to die alone.”
You looked at your own pocket watch Tommy had given you on your wedding night clicking it open looking at the time.
“I have to go. Business calls.”
Tommy reached out over the table,
“Y/N, please. Don’t go.”
You stood up avoiding his gaze, If you looked at him now, your walls would falter, you’d run back into his arms and forgive him for everything. His crystal blue eyes had a way over you, especially when they were sad. You pulled your coat over you, making sure to untuck your hair.
“Y/N.”
Tommy stood up as everyone else watched uncomfortably. You were sure Arthur and John thought you were being cruel. Seeing their brother grovel and beg for forgiveness was surely painful for them.
“See you later, everyone.”
You smiled as much as you could, your glazed over eyes telling a different story as you stepped out of the betting shop, into the Birmingham fog, a tug on your arm forcing you to stay put.
“Please, Y/N. Don’t go. We can fix this, please.”
Your eyes weren’t the only ones glazed over. Thomas Shelby was crying, out in the open too.
“Please. Don’t leave me. I love you.”
You picked your hand up and placed it on his cheek, wiping away his tears. You hated seeing him so sad.
“I love you, Tommy, but I can’t forgive you for this. I’m sorry.”
You pulled away gently from his grip and he let go. He watched you walk into the fog a dread in his heart, wondering if he’d ever see you again. He thought his heart was already broken beforehand, this proved he was wrong. Now it truly was and it was all his fault. A moment of madness left him with a lifetime of sorrow as the only person he truly loved walked away.

You Knew What You Were Getting Into
Chapter three- Fear Takes Over Sometimes
warning; derogatory language and usual ‘Peaky’ stuff
Tumblr media
(GIFS not mine)
The drive was quiet with the odd stretch from the brakes. Your long skirt now suddenly seemed too short. Your ankles showing as you tried to tug at your clothing to cover them. The weather was miserable. The usual Birmingham fog making it somewhat hard to see.
Back at the Betting Shop, Arthur and John were sitting with Polly letting her know that you’d agreed to stay with Ada for a few days. Polly was ecstatic, she always was fond of you. You somehow grounded Tommy. He was cold and cruel and she truly believed you made him a better person. When he was with you, she saw a glimpse of who he was before the war. The fact he threw all that away for someone that worked for him was beyond her.
“Afternoon.”
Tommy strolled in looking worse for wear, but still somehow smart. Glasses on as he poured himself a whiskey. It was a staple in his diet of the best of times, but now? People hardly saw him with an empty glass.
“What are you lot talking about in here? Business?”
He took a large swig from his glass as he leant against the counter. The Shelby’s around the table stayed quiet.
“I thought as much.”
Tommy mumbled into his glass as he finished the contents, picking up his suit jacket, shrugging into it.
John was about to speak up until an unknown face stood by the entrance of the kitchen. A worried, young man, no older than seventeen, holding his flat cap tightly against his side as he heaved. It sounded like he’d been running a marathon. Ada followed after, making sure the Shelby’s didn’t think it was some imposter.
“This young lad saw Y/N get into the car of Billy Kimber.”
Ada’s facial expression told them all they needed to know.
The teen stood forward, anyone would think he was about to be murdered in cold blood with how scared he looked.
“She didn’t want to. She was forced. Someone…”
He stood intimidated, trying to get his breath back,
“Someone was holding a gun on her.”
“Where?”
Anyone that was looking in Tommy’s direction would have seen the colour drain from him. It looked as though an unknown illness had taken over him instantly as he gripped hold of a kitchen chair for balance.
“Where.”
Tommy was losing his patience, his usual demeanour taking over. It was as though he could block all emotions with a click of his fingers.
“It took me half hour to run here Mr. Shelby. I saw your brothers there a couple hours before out of me bedroom window."
The poor boy choked out, still catching his breath. Tommy gave his brothers a glare as they all stood up.
Ada gave the boy a cup of water and sent him on his way with his pockets feeling a little heavier.
“She was at her house.”
Arthur spoke up.
“She was probably about to leave for Ada’s.”
Tommy knew everyone still spoke to Y/N. Even though she was ignoring him. Who could blame her? She was the love of his life and he was really kicking himself now. Not only had he betrayed her trust in the worst way possible as a husband, but he had also put his wife in danger by doing so. If anything was to happen to her. He would never forgive himself. * The warehouse was cold and damp. The harsh temperature clinging to your body as the men around you kept their beady eyes your way. The rope around your wrists and ankles cutting into your flesh every time you moved.
“Not much longer now.”
Billy Kimber was smug, he probably liked the fact you were trying not to shiver. You didn’t wasn’t to show weakness, but in the eyes of him, you were just another female, a lady of the night for all he cared. A silly girl in a skirt.
“He knows where to come. The question is.”
He cocked his gun and pointed it at you. Mocking you.
“Will he come? Or will he be screwing that pretty barmaid.”
He stepped around you keeping his gun close,
“What’s her name? Is it… Grace?”
That made you wince. You’d rather the barrel of his gun in your mouth than be forced to think of Tommy fucking someone else.
“How did you find out? Did you catch them at it… on your bed? The bed you share with him?”
The torment and mockery off Billy Kimber was unhinged, he was enjoying this, he loved to see someone that loved Tommy as much as you did hurt.
“Shut the fuck up!”
He smirked,
“Hit a nerve did I princess? That’s no way to speak to a superior now is it? I think that deserves some punishment.”
Before you even knew what was happening the handle of Billy’s gun collided with your cheek. Your teeth cutting through the flesh of your gums. Leaving you spiting blood. He was about to do the other side when a blood curdling, ‘stop’, echoed against the walls of the open warehouse.
Tommy stood alone, worry plastered over his face as your eyes locked with his, He looked bad, it was obvious he wasn’t sleeping, probably drinking far too much alcohol, but still Tommy. Your Tommy.
“You got what you wanted. I’m here. Let Y/N go.”
Tommy edged forward slowly, with both hands up, clearly unarmed. You had no idea what was happening or what he was doing, Tommy always had a plan. This time, it looked like he didn’t.
“Oh but I’m having so much fun taunting this pretty little lamb over here, you really do know how to keep the right company, I mean look at her. Innocent.”
Billy spoke about you, but didn’t let his eyes off Tommy, even though he was unarmed, be was obviously still aware of what he was capable of.
“You fucked me over. So now you have my undivided attention.”
He inched closer to you keeping the gun locked on you.
“You fixed the race. You fucking Gypsy scum. I run the races. I’m Billy Kimber and I’m going to have your wife, or... ex wife?"
 he sniggered,
"Shot against a post.”
Fear flashed across Tommy's face, something you never saw. You squeezed your eyes closed praying that Tommy wouldn’t anger him more. You didn’t know the ins and outs of what Tommy got up to, but you did know that he angered a whole range of different people.
You were struggling to keep your breathing under control, one of the things Polly taught you to do was never panic in situations like these. It fuels the attacker and that’s something you didn’t want to do. You watched Tommy as he put his hand in his pocket, scared he was going to pull out a gun.
“Look at this,”
He threw something small and shiny towards Billy as he picked it up from the floor. A bullet.
“That is my name. It’s from the Lee family. You are also at war with the Lees family, Mr. Kimber, am I right? They’re attacking your bookies and taking your money. Your men can’t control them. You need help.”
It was Tommy’s turn to inch forward as Billy listened to what he had to say, the grip on his gun against your head loosening a little.
“They’re saying the racetracks are easy meat,”
Tommy continued,
“The police are busy with strikes. Now… we have connections. We know how they operate. Together we can beat them. Divided, maybe not.”
Tommy pulled out a cigarette rubbing it against his lips before striking a match.
 “I admire you Mr. Kimber.”
He took a drag of his cigarette letting it sit deep in his lungs before exhaling. You knew what he was doing. He was feeding his ego, every man loved an ego boost, especially from someone like Thomas Shelby,
“You started with nothing and built a legitimate business. It would be an honour to work with you, Mr. Kimber.”
Billy put his gun away and adjusted himself, shuffled his shoulders and stood proud,
“Nobody works ‘with’ me. People work ‘for’ me.”
He dropped the bullet in front of your feet as he walked off.
“Pick it up, pikey. Get out of this warehouse and take your whore with you. I will be in touch.”
Tommy ran over to you before Billy had even left the warehouse, quickly picking up the bullet and untying you from the dirty chair being careful of your wrists and ankles, not wanting to cause anymore damage, your poor skin visibly torn,
“Y/N I’m so sorry.”
His clear blue eyes seemed genuine. You stayed quiet as Tommy lifted his hand to your cheek, stroking gently with his thumb, over the bruise that was already forming as you pulled away, your eyes glassed with tears.
“Let’s get you out of here and warmed up.”
He helped you off the chair and gave you his coat as he placed his hand on your lower back. You didn’t know what to say to him. He had hurt you more than ever, but you still felt so safe next to him. You wanted to cling to him for dear life, forgive him for everything he’d done, but you held off. You loved him so much, but you couldn’t help but think about him and Grace. Together. You gripped his coat that was around your person as you made your way outside, gathering yourself for the most uncomfortable family meeting yet.

You Knew What You Were Getting Into
Chapter two- You’re Still Family
Tumblr media
(GIFS aren’t mine)
Your head ached, but your heart ached more. Since leaving Tommy, you went to stay at your late mother’s house. It was still yours, you never sold it. You couldn’t bring yourself to do so. It was such a small little thing, but you grew up there. It had a hold on you. A bit like Tommy.
You hadn’t been outside in two weeks, all you’d been doing was picking at groceries you’d bought on the way and drinking whiskey that cruelly belonged to Tommy too. You hadn’t spoken to any of the Shelby’s since walking out, you hadn’t spoken to anyone. It was getting to you, you missed them all. Polly was the best aunt to you, her stern, but loving words got you through so much in the time you had been a part of the family. You missed Arthur and his silly ways, yes he drank way too much, but he always had your back, you missed John and his almost childish demeanour, you missed Finn, he was way older than his years, but being in the family he was. That was no surprise. You missed Ada. You missed having a sister and of course, you really missed Thomas fucking Shelby. After everything he’d done, the ultimate betrayal, something you would never have thought about doing to him. He slept with someone else. Fucked someone else, and he didn’t care.
A knock on the door took you away from your thoughts, you wiped your cheeks that had stray tear marks. You hadn’t even realized you were crying it had become so normal. You patted down your skirt to make sure you looked somewhat presentable as you opened the door with a single click. Arthur and John stumbled in as though they’d been drinking since the morning before.
“Right, Y/N.”
Words rolled off of Arthurs tongue as he pulled out a chair and sat down without asking, at the end of the day, you were family, they were always welcome. Even if you and Tommy were no longer together, you still cared about them all. It was weird seeing them though, two weeks and there still wasn't any awkwardness between you all.
“You need to come with us.”
Arthur continued as John got three glasses and filled three fingers of Whiskey. Picking his up straight away.
“I won’t be going anywhere with you today, Arthur, John.”
You picked up your own whiskey swilling it round the glass. Your alcohol tolerance had gone up which wasn’t a good thing.
“I’m happy in my own company, I’d rather not be faced with more problems right now.”
John sighed and took a seat next to Arthur, leaving you as the only person standing.
“Tommy has been a dick, Y/N. I know it's not my place, but he's moping round there. He's annoying everyone, especially Polly."
Arthur stayed quiet as John continued to fill you in.
"She's been fighting your back, our Polly. She's disgusted with his behaviour. You're a good woman, Y/N. Everyone knows it. Our brother, Thomas has well and truly fucked up. We can’t excuse his behaviour, but you’re family. You’re not safe here on your own. People are…”
John looked to Arthur as you drank the contents of your glass debating another,
“talking...”
“Talking?”
you questioned, putting your glass on the side pulling out a pack of cigarettes. The brothers looked at you in shock which was hard to come by with the Shelby brothers. They were never shocked, but they had every right to be. They’d never seen you smoke. It had helped you tons the past couple weeks, it curbed your hunger when you couldn’t be bothered to eat and it also helped with your stress. Somehow the burning deep in your lungs helped, you could see why Tommy smoked like a train now. You offered the brothers a smoke, but they both turned it down.
“Yes, Y/N.”
John sat up pouring another glass,
“People are putting two and two together. You’re never seen with Tommy anymore, people know something isn’t right. You know how many enemies we have out there. You’re not safe here alone, we can get people to keep an eye on the house, but were afraid that sooner rather than later, something is going to go terribly wrong.”
John took back the contents of his glass before sighing,
“You’re a valuable asset to enemies, someone Tommy loves, someone we love, you’re still family. We don’t want anything to happen to you, you will be safer nearer to home.”
You scoffed taking a drag of your cigarette, more than you usually would, the bright ember burning bright as ash fell to the floor.
“Don’t make me laugh, John. If he loved me so much he wouldn’t be getting his dick wet with some whore would he.”
The brothers almost winced, you’d never been so cold and harsh, but you were correct. Tommy had broken you.
“Please, Y/N. Come and stay with Ada for a few days, you’ll be safe there and away from Tommy. We just want you to be safe.”
They wouldn’t shut up, they would pull you out the house kicking and screaming if it came to it.
“Fine. Okay. I will stay with Ada for a few days.”
You finished your cigarette throwing the end into your empty glass. That was your own way to stop yourself filling the glass with whiskey.
“I need to do some things around the house first though, so I will stop by in a few hours, okay? That’s the best I can do.”
You reached for another cigarette and the boys nodded standing up.
“See you later then Y/N.”
You nodded as they pulled their hats down slightly in a nod.
“Best get back to business, ay John?”
they both left, leaving your house in silence again.
You sat for a while staring at the empty glasses before getting up to do the last few chores around the house and to pack your bags. You were only going to be staying there for a few days so you packed enough for four, just in case. Whilst you were neatly folding your clothes, something you hadn’t done when you left the house you shared with Tommy. You clipped up your suitcase when a stern knock on the door took you away from what you were doing. John and Arthur never said they were coming to pick you up. You were hesitant to open the door, but did anyway. Something just didn’t quite feel right.
“Ello, Poppet. I heard down the grapevine Thomas Shelby don’t want you no more.”
Your blood ran cold as you took a step back into your house, staring back at the steel that was pointed directly at you. You’d been held at gunpoint a few times with being involved with the Shelby’s. It seemed to go hand in hand, but this was different. Billy Kimber. Arthur and John were right. You were in grave danger.
"Now, I'm going to ask you for a favour. Don' even think about saying no. You get your pretty self in the car out front and I promise you won't get hurt."
He clicked his gun,
"Too much."
He smirked. Your heart was in your mouth. You were unarmed. You just hoped someone had seen him at your door, a lot of people hated the Shelby's, but valuable information about one of their own being taken by a rival gang? They would be paid well for information. You swallowed thickly as you followed more of his men to the car. You had no choice. Two weeks away from your home had made you naïve. You always carried a small gun Tommy got you one year on your birthday. You would hold it in the top of your skirt. Hidden away from others and somehow tightly secured. That same gun was upstairs in a bedside table. You closed your eyes as the car pulled away, who knew what you were about to endure.

You Knew What You Were Getting Into.
Chapter one- Did You Ever Love Me.
Tumblr media
(GIFS aren’t mine)
Your life was quite simplistic before you were involved with the Shelby’s. You had a small dwelling near a few shops which was more than enough for you. You spent most days going on strolls, being kind to the locals with the odd man trying to get you to go on a date. Your late mother was a single woman and although it was always looked down on, she had lived her life just fine. You didn’t need a man. That was until you met the notorious Thomas Shelby.
You knew about the Shelby family, who didn’t. Everyone wished to be them, they held power over a lot of people. Anyone would cower in fear when they entered a room, you didn’t really take any notice until you were in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Something had gone south between the Shelby brothers. You had no idea what. You saw Thomas knocking the teeth out of some guy that had crossed his family in some way.
His concentration as he hit this random guy, the knot in his brow. No remorse from him as the man below him pleaded for life. Through punches he caught your eyes which caused him to falter and stop. The man with his face hardly recognisable too done in to even bother trying to get up and win the fight.
“We’re done here boys.”
With one last look, he was gone. Since then you kept bumping into Tommy which got you both talking, which then led to other things and here you were.
A ring on your finger.
Part of the Shelby family.
You fit in well despite being unknown to them several moons ago.
You were a bit younger than Tommy. 10 years younger to be exact, in your 20’s. At the start Tommy was somewhat bothered with it, you were too pure and beautiful for someone like him, you were untarnished. An angel walking the earth in his eyes. You may have been before, but now? You had seen things women definitely shouldn’t have seen. You had seen your husband come home screaming in pain with bullets wedged into his flesh. You had seen the same with his brothers. It wasn’t a life for the faint hearted, but you knew what you were getting yourself into.
Tommy had changed the past few months. Things were getting difficult. Things were getting more dangerous if that was ever possible. He was out all hours of the day and night without a say so. Always coming home with more bruises and stinking of whiskey.
You tried to get him to talk, you tried to get him to confined in you. He always used to so you didn’t understand why he didn’t now. No. You did. You just didn’t like thinking about it.
Grace. The new barmaid. You knew he was seeing her behind your back. You had seen him with her. How he looked at her, damn. He didn’t even look at you like he looked at her. You didn’t know where you went wrong. You had spoken to Polly about it, but she tried to tell you that, ‘men only think with their cocks. He loves you, he just doesn’t show it in the right way.’ Even Arthur and John sympathised with you. They knew how much you loved their brother.
The final straw was when he turned up late on the night of your three year wedding anniversary, stinking of booze and what could only be described as Grace. You stood with your back to him as you looked at the stash of whiskey within the Shelby household, tempted to down a bottle yourself.
“You were with her weren’t you?”
Your cold demeanour could have almost made him shiver. He stayed silent as you turned around. Tears stung your eyes as you watched him. Both of you standing your ground. The look on his face was obvious. He didn’t even have to say he was with her.
“What do you think I am Thomas Shelby? A fucking scullery maid? A whore?”
Your arms flew around in anger as he stay watching you shocked at your language. You’d never spoken to him in that way before,
“What am I in the eyes of the marvellous Thomas Shelby from Small Heath? I tell you what,”
you chuckled to yourself,
“This,”
You stood pointing at him and back to you back and forth,
“Is over. We are done. I am done being here and I am done doting on your every fucking move.”
For a second you thought you saw a glimpse of regret behind his eyes as your own tears made their way down your cheeks, you thought he could actually feel bad for hurting you, but you were mistaken.
“You knew what you were getting into, Y/N. Before we were even married. Sorry if this lifestyle isn’t up to your standards.”
He too was cold as ever.
You smile with disappointment and looked to the floor shaking your head,
“Your lifestyle isn’t what bothers me, Thomas. It’s the way you’ve treated me. Nowhere in my heart did I think you would hurt me in this way. What does she have that I don’t? What has she given you that I haven’t? Was I just not good enough for you, Tommy?”
Your voice was quiet now, you were hurt and that was hard to hide.
“Did you ever love me?”
Tommy stood, silent once again he didn’t even want to fight for you.
With that you left him standing in the hall, not wanting to breakdown in front of him. You didn’t want to seem little and pathetic. You didn’t want him to know he had such a hold over you, though he probably already knew that. Why else would he keep cheating on you.
With that you made your way upstairs to start packing your many memories and to move on and away from the Shelby family.
