like i know this is one of those "we all know why" posts but tbh i think it is because we fundamentally undermine the american dream.

the only way to believe in the idea that anyone can be financially secure if they just try hard enough is predicated on the idea that people in poverty can't possibly be trying hard enough. and disability isn't considered a "good" reason to be impoverished either because well look at all those #inspirational stories of people who "don't let their disability hold them back."

there is a LOT riding on the myth of the american dream. in fact all of american capitalism is riding on it. if people knew that the grind would never make them rich, would never give them the security they were promised, would never even get their heads above water, well, fuck. there goes the entire working class.

and the very thought that people in need deserve to have those needs met by collective kindness just doesn't vibe with our whole bootstraps patriotism 4th of july home of the brave fascist shit stew of a national identity.
