most annoying thing is that, as someone who doesn't like keeping quiet when people are misinformed, i found myself defending "both sides" (pro/anti cancel culture), which was confusing... not that i ever have to pick one side, nothing is black and white, but how could i defend/disagree with opposing forces? but the way op puts it there's not even a clear line between two sides. there's not even two sides to pick from with how loosely defined it is. with that in mind, it makes so much more sense that i agree and disagree with elements of each part of cancel culture. shit's exhausting lol. definition 1 from op shouldn't even be considered cancel culture. that's just morality.

i hate the word cancel culture because it literally means whatever the person saying it wants it to mean which is to say it means absolutely nothing. for some people it means “facing consequences for your actions” (which isn’t a bad thing) for others its “targeted harassment campaigns based on nothing/useless purity culture nonsense” (which is a bad thing) and for others its “big tech censorship” (lol) (this one is usually republicans/right wing people) and most of the conflict i see surrounding this is people just saying “cancel culture” and not specifying further, which obviously sounds bad if you’re using completely different definitions
