TAMATO says : “ To put it bluntly, life here on earth is pretty darn fragile. It’s now been a couple of weeks since the passing of our surfing world’s most iconic & best water cinematographer/videographer who had ever graced the heavy ocean lineups with his presence. To say the least, Larry Haynes was a one of a kind, with charisma oozing out of his stocky little frame. Larry always loved to put himself in the most death defying situations to make sure he captured the image. His friends called him the Walrus. Larry literally captured my first proper 8 foot barrel out at Pipe when I was 14 years old. From that day forward, Larry always believed in me & would continue to film & document my rise to the top in the Pipeline hierarchy. About 2 weeks before my friend Larry passed on, we had an awesome little conversation about one of the better waves he had the opportunity of capturing of me during the later part of my career… ironically enough, Larry sent me this nostalgic clip that is posted here in & I am forever grateful to The Walrus for always believing in me & the good trips & times I got to spend laughing with him & enjoying his company. TAMATO says : “ I went to my favorite one stop shop @waialuasurfshop yesterday. The ambiance at this place is mentally soothing & literally has everything your little #surf heart desires. Much to my wonderful surprise, my good friend & #surfing mentor @brewerchapmansurfboards came out of his legendary shaping room to gift me with a #magic #surfboard . The twist here is that this 6’ 7” surfboard wasn’t shaped by the Master himself, but rather, it was shaped by his hard charging Pipe nephew & apprentice @kalooneytunes who is also a really good friend of mine & very much so, like my little brother. The Legendary Owl 🦉doesn’t sugar coat anything & in fact, he is very real & critical about good surfing & good shaping. Put it this way, just because Kalani is his blood relative, he would never let Kalani put the legendary Brewer/Chapman Surfboard logo on a Kalani shaped board unless Kalani was absolutely wholeheartedly ready & worthy to put the iconic logo on his board. Owl in his subtle ways has always given me gracious compliments about my surfing abilities & thought me worthy to showcase his nephews new & amazing talents as a shaper.
