Next thing I knew I was being woken up from Mat shifting in the bed next to me. Feeling like I was still in a dream, I decided to ignore it and tried to fall back into the sound sleep I was in.
“I’m going to practice with Dennis, the kids are coming too. You shouldn’t have a problem leaving. I’ll talk to you later, have a good day.” I heard Mat whisper into my ear before planting a kiss on my temple. I smiled at the feeling and statement but needed at least two more hours of sleep to function, and his bed was way too comfortable for me to move from.
After officially waking up, I checked the time that sat a quarter after 10:00am. It took me a couple seconds before the time had actually sunk in. 10:15am? I was only supposed to wait until just after 1:00am to leave. My hands hit my face and rubbed my eyes awake. I couldn’t believe I accidentally slept the whole night in his bed, and was now completely alone.
I knew Mat wouldn’t be back from practice until after noon, and thankfully I vaguely remembered him telling me Dennis was bringing the kids. I combed through my hair with my fingertips, roughly putting it into a bun, ponytail thing. There wasn’t much else I could do as I didn’t plan on staying there overnight. I took a couple more minutes to check my phone as my brain woke up before heading out to go home.
The basement was utterly dark but I somehow managed to get up the stairs in one piece only using my phone light. I opened the door that led to the main floor, double checking to make sure the coast was clear, just in case. After waiting several moments without hearing a sound, I quietly stepped from behind the door and gently closed it behind me. I then slowly paced to the kitchen side door that led to my parents house.
“Cassie, funny seeing you here.” I heard Rebecca call from behind me. It felt like my heart had dropped, hitting every organ on the way down. I froze with one hand on the door handle as I felt her eyes stare through my back like a burning fire. I began to sweat and tried to decipher if my best bet was to make a run for it, or make up some crazy story.
“Rebecca. Hey! How are you?” I stuttered out, turning hesitantly to watch her. She came from the hallway I had just exited and took a seat at the kitchen table. Seeming almost unphased by my presence as if this was normal.
“That’s so funny I️ could have sworn Mat said you went home before we got back last night.” She inquired. At this point I was sweating so bad it probably looks like I had just run through a rainstorm. Every second felt like an hour and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t pull myself to respond.
“You do realize you can tell me the truth and I️ won't kill you right?” She laughed taking notice to my nervousness. I let out a hard breath that I didn’t realize I was holding, feeling like an elephant fell off my chest.
“Did Dennis tell you?” I questioned figuring he was the one who ratted me out about the other night. I decided to join her on the other side of the table coming to realization that this was definitely conversation we needed to have.
“Please. This house is littered with security cameras. Which I just so happened to check up on to make sure the kids went to sleep on time. Stumbling upon some scary movie neither of you could keep your eyes on.” She responded jokingly to answer my question. My cheeks warmed with embarrassment knowing now that she’s seen our heated make out session in her basement.
My hands hit the top of my forehead. Figuring this was it. This was how I was going to get fired. I knew it was a bad idea but I couldn’t resist, and you know what? I don’t regret a thing either. It was worth it.
“Like I️ said I'm not mad I️ promise. And I️ respect that you at least waited until the kids fell asleep first.” She added, reaching her arm across the table to rub the top of my arm in attempts of calming my clearly stressed state of mind.
“I’ll make sure it doesn’t happen again I’m sorry. It was kind of hard to resist.” I explained to Rebecca. I tried to say it jokingly to convince her I wasn’t stressed to the point of swearing I have 70 new grey hairs.
“As long as the kids don’t see it then I’m fine. I️ support it actually. He seems to be a really nice guy. I️ know you both, you’re compatible. And I’d be lying if I️ said I️ didn't expect this before agreeing to let him live here.” She continued. The more she talked, the better I felt.
“But Dennis seems so serious about it.” I replied, referring to his cold attitude towards us the past couple of days.
“He’s uptight like that he’s fine. He already knows, we’ve talked about it.” She concluded with a giggle. “Besides. Mat has made it very obvious that he seriously likes you.”
Her words made my stomach flutter. He’s made it obvious he liked me, but I still have yet to figure out if it’s serious or not. It’s still too soon to tell, yet having her reassure me that he’s definitely interested was something I didn’t realize I desperately needed.
“You really think so?” I added wanting to hear her say it again.
“Definitely. He hasn’t stopped talking about you. He’s really bad at keeping secrets with people he’s friends with by the way.” She confirmed. My mouth pulled into a smile hearing that he’s been talking about me, and the fact that they were ok with it. It seems as if nothing could go wrong now, right?
“Thank you Rebecca. You always know how to calm me down.” I finished before standing up from the chair to give her a hug.
“Anytime Cassie. Please know I’m always here to talk, okay?” She promised. I nodded my head before we said our goodbyes and I was finally walking out the door to return home.
Upon arriving at the train station my phone began to ring. I pulled it out of my pocket while Mat’s number played across the screen. Absentmindedly, a grin appeared across my face while my thumb slid across the glass to answer it.
“Hey, how was practice?” I questioned sweetly as I swiped my metrocard through the ticket machine.
“Surprisingly went very well. I️ think I'm starting to get used to the new pace.” Mat answered. I could hear in his voice that he was smiling on the other side of the line.
“Well that’s good!” I responded enthusiastically walking up to the platform where my train would be arriving shortly.
“I️ actually called because I️ have a question though.” Mat added in a more serious tone.
“Yeah, What’s up?” I replied. My heart beat began to strengthen as I worried what the question could possibly be, or if Dennis had spoken to him about last night.
“I️ was wondering if maybe you wanted to go get lunch with me now that practice is over.” Mat proposed. Instantly my insides jolted in happiness as a prominent smile carved into my features. I tilted my head down to face the ground hoping the people surrounding me didn’t notice my sudden, extreme excitement.
“I️ would love to.” I happily accepted trying to sound as nonchalant as possible.
While I was on the train we agreed to meet up at a simple little sit down restaurant close to my apartment. By the time I arrived he was already there. We sat down in a booth with Mathew directly across from me. The restaurant was cozy. There was a good amount of sunlight coming from the windows that reflected off tiny pieces of colored glass throughout the room. It wasn’t a fancy restaurant, it was very modern, but nonetheless it was the perfect spot for a first casual date.
I couldn’t help but have a warm feeling at the fact Mat wanted to take me out to lunch. Finally being able to meet outside of the house with no one around to stop us, and not having anything to worry about.
“So did you make it out alive this morning?” Mat joked while scanning over the menu. I laughed at his comment.
“Barley, not without having several heart attacks first.” I responded, taking my own menu into my hands.
“What do you mean?” Mat added, his eyes meeting mine over the top of our menus.
“Rebecca saw me leaving then proceeded to explain that they have security cameras.. everywhere.. and she just happened to check up on us “watching” our movie.” I explained
“Damn it, we got caught?” He questioned. I could tell he wasn’t that worried about it as his tone of voice stayed fairly neutral.
“Yeah but she said they don’t care as long as the kids don’t see us.” I continued before looking back down at my menu.
“Well that makes this a lot easier” Mat implied, returning his sight to his own.
My facial features tightened as I didn’t quite understand what he meant. If he meant sneaking around would be easier, or if the relationship would be. The waiter came over to take our drink orders, cutting the conversation off. After they stepped away I decided to actually take some time looking at the food options to make a decision on what I wanted as I was too distracted by the conversation earlier.
I began to feel oddly uncomfortable. In a weird way. Like, one of those situations where you’re walking down a street and it feels like someone is following you. It felt like there was a presence around me. I looked up from my menu and scanned the restaurant to see if there was someone or something that could make me feel this way. It didn’t take long before my sight met with a boy, who I would say was around my age, staring at me intensely from across the room.
He was attractive, but his eyes were glued onto me. His elbows rested on the table while his hands covered his mouth as he talked to his friend in the seat across from him, who was clearly not paying attention. I shook it off hoping maybe he was watching someone or looking at something behind me, as there were plenty of distractions in this restaurant.
However, the feeling never eased. I then peaked behind me to see if his sight could be locked onto something else, but there was only a couple of empty booths before a plain cream colored wall. So, if he was still staring, I knew it was at me, which upon turning around I noticed it continued.
His eyes scanned up and down without looking away once. Even as he picked up his drink to take a sip. His stare felt like it was shooting through me like spotlights. I couldn’t figure out why he was watching so intensely, or what exactly to do about it.
“Cassandra?” Mat said while snapping his fingers in front of me, clearly trying to get my attention, pulling me out of the trance.
“Uh yes?” I responded while shaking my head attempting to shake the thought of the boy.
“Is everything okay? You’ve been spaced out for a moment and you’re beginning to look flushed.” He inquired. I figured telling him wouldn’t be a bad idea, and maybe he could switch seats with me.
“There’s a boy over there staring me down, it’s really weird.” I explained pointing directly to the man, making it obvious that I was speaking about him. Mat looked over the side of the booth to catch a glimpse of who it was.
Mathew immediately stood up which made my stomach crush into a little paper ball, nervous that he was going to make a scene in the middle of the restaurant. But instead, he came over to sit next to me on my side of the booth.
“Well then, let’s give him something to stare at.” Mat proposed while wrapping an arm around my shoulder. I turned to face him and noticed he was leaning over to connect his lips with mine.
I expected it to just be a small kiss due to the fact we were in public, but Mat was determined to give this boy a show. Next thing I know we were in a fairly intense make out session for a good minute as I hoped in the back of my mind that the waiter didn’t walk over in the middle of it.
Once Mat slowly pulled away I attempted to steady my breathing and heart rate once again. I forgot where I even was for a moment. I looked up towards Mathew and immediately met his eyes studying me, making sure I felt ok. I flashed him a smile of appreciation before turning to see the boy again, whose gaze was no longer to be seen as he was getting up to leave the restaurant.
“Thank you.” I said sincerely to Mathew, wanting him to know I strongly appreciated his actions. He planted a kiss on my mouth one more time.
“Anything for you.” He confirmed. I felt safe under his arm that was still around my shoulder. I was relieved to learn that he was protective, but not in an unreasonable way.
He decided to remain on my side of the booth for the rest of the evening, specifically so I’d feel comfortable. Every once in a while his hand would lay on my thigh with his thumb rubbing on the fabrics covering my skin. Not in a seductive way, it was more of a silent form of him reminding me that he was there for me.
The rest of the evening went beautifully and he even walked me to my apartment building before calling a taxi to take him home. After returning to my room I laid on my bed as the events of the day replayed through my head. I regretted not inviting him upstairs, but I figured that would be better for another time.

8:45 rolled around. The kids were all tucked into their beds. I’ve read them their favorite stories and they’ve drifted off into sleep. I’d hate to admit it but I was just as tired. I’ve done a lot today and never got a break.
I now stood in front of the door that lead to the basement. Contemplating how long I was going to wait before opening. I was nervous. Besides the fact Mat made it obvious he was interested in me, something in my gut was trying to convince me it was wrong.
Ignoring my instincts I opened the door anyway. Walking down the stairs as quietly as possible even though I knew very well the kids wouldn’t hear me. The lights in the basement were turned off but I noticed flashing LED lights, obviously coming from a television, illuminating the space.
Once at the bottom I saw Mathew sitting on the couch watching the first IT movie. His focus left the screen and was now on my presence as a small smirk of admiration appeared across his face. He patted the sofa next to him without saying a word, where I promptly moved to relax next to him, kicking my feet up on the ottoman mimicking his current position.
After seating myself comfortably on the couch he shifted himself closer to mine. Placing his arm around my shoulder while I rested into his side. That wonderful sweet aroma filling my nose once again, making it easy for the tension in my muscles to release.
“Are you into scary movies?” Mat questioned. He had clearly hoped I wasn’t, wanting me to be scared and jump into his arms every minute on the minute. But unfortunately, that wasn’t the case.
“I️ love this movie actually. I’ve seen it three times and read the book.” I admitted. Snuggling myself further into him that way my head now rested on the top of his chest. I knew very well that wasn’t the answer he wanted, but it was the truth.
The sound of the movie and his breathing was all I could hear for several minutes passing, and it was peaceful. Being able to sit with him and enjoy his company was all I could ask for. Well besides, you know, wanting to stick my tongue down his throat.
However, a gruesome part that I didn’t enjoy watching eventually appeared. It didn’t scare me at all, it was just really gross and I would rather not see it. I turned my head into Mathew’s chest and held up my free hand to protect my eyes from catching a glimpse.
“I️ thought you liked this movie?” Mat teased noticing my actions.
“I️ do. I️ just don’t like watching this part it’s gross.” I muffled into his shirt. I felt him chuckle underneath me amused by my statement.
“Don’t laugh at me.” I said playfully, lifting my head up to look at him. What I didn’t realize is that his face was dangerously closer than I had anticipated.
Both of us had froze and taken a moment to admire the small amount of distance between our faces. I stared into his hazel eyes as they shone bright from the LED reflection of the television. His lips a soft pink like rose petals. His skin was hydrated and smooth with a couple of scars on his nose and cheek.
I watched as he studied me as well. His gaze scanning my features carefully, flickering his sight between my eyes and my lips. Reassuring himself that he wasn’t crossing any boundaries. He looked into me domestically while his fingertips slowly brushed against my cheek before situating around my jawline.
Before I knew it, my eyelids were fluttering shut as his lips gently connected with mine. My heart pounded so hard I thought it looked like one of those cartoon characters where it beats out of their chest. My insides sparking into flames of excitement.
The first contact lingered longer than either of us had expected. It just felt sooo, right. The second kiss was a little more comfortable. This time we both had time to adjust our mouths into the perfect position.
The sound of our lips separating echoed through my ear as he leaned his forehead against mine. I couldn’t help but bite my bottom lip as we looked into each other hungrily. We had been craving this moment for days now, and we finally had it.
His eyes darkened to a more seductive haze while his mouth shined in greed.
After only a few seconds, our mouths were connected again, but this time more passionately. His tongue had slipped between my lips mid kiss and it began to play with mine. His hands traveled up and down my back, leaving trails of fire wherever they touched. His fingertips were trying to memorize every curve and divot of my body. Meanwhile my own touch was on the toned muscles of his torso. Familiarizing myself with the movement of his skin. Being able to imagine it in my mind while I examined with my finger tips.
His taste was refreshing. I could tell he had planned to do this. It was evident that he recently brushed his teeth, due to the flawless minty flavor I was experiencing. Which, I thought was flattering. He was trying.
His lips were soft like cushions. He knew exactly how to move them on mine. He figured out the tempo from my mouth and followed it.
He eventually began to use his teeth to nibble at my bottom lip. He did it sporadically that way it would catch me off guard, to which he enjoyed my reaction every time. It was usually an accidental quiet moan, but I loved it and I knew my bottom lip would be sore tomorrow.
I then moved my hand to cup his jawline. He had a small amount of stubble that scratched at my fingertips. His hand pulled the bottom of my thigh up, that way it would rest higher on his lap.
It felt like a tornado was in my stomach. I enjoyed all the small details of the kiss. His taste, gentle touch, and the way he felt underneath me. We had missed a lot of the movie and our moment lasted way longer than anticipated. However, I was thoroughly enjoying each aching minute of it, and so did he.
He slowly backed off which caused my eyes to slowly open. My lids were heavy from being closed for so long in my own little world. Once opening, I noticed Mat had a confused look on his face that was directed towards the stairs.
“What’s….” I started but he quickly covered my mouth with his finger making a ‘shhhh’ sound.
“Did you hear that?” He whispered not removing his sight from the stairs. The only sound I could hear was his breathing and the soft sound coming from a quiet scene of the movie. I had no idea what time it was at this point but I remembered the parents saying they wouldn’t be home until midnight.
Then, we heard the sound of the stair door creaking open. I quickly jumped up not sure of what to do next. I just knew you had to get off Mathew, no matter how bad I didn’t want to. Borderline panicking, I looked around the room for places to hide but no where seemed safe enough.
Quickly, I felt Mat grabbed me from behind, pushing me into his bedroom that was adjacent to the couch. I followed his movements, closing the door behind me. I locked the knobs and waited impatiently on the bed for any signal that the coast was clear.
I noticed the light in the basement had turned on as it now shined under the bottom of the door. I stood up and placed my ear on the inch thick wood. Ready to eavesdrop on the situation from the other side.
“Dennis! Hey! You’re home early?” Mat yelled from the couch. Purposely so I could hear exactly what was going on.
“Yeah, we were hoping the rain would let up but it didn’t so we skipped the movie and just did a long dinner. Where’s Cassandra? Did she head home?” Dennis then questioned. I felt my stomach drop as if I had just gave birth to it. The blood was rushing through my body like it was running a marathon.
“Yeah, she has class early tomorrow morning. Once the kids were in bed I️ offered to hold down the fort for the rest of the night so she left.” Mat explained. It felt like a weight lifted off my chest. Mat was smart, he knew exactly what to say to pull this off.
“You didn’t scare her off did you? I’m sure she didn’t appreciate being pinned to a hockey net at three in the morning the other day.” Dennis then added. There was a moment of silence traded between the two. Mathew clearly couldn’t think of a response to his accusation and honestly, I was shocked he said anything myself.
“Calm down I’m just kidding. Have a good night.” He finished, followed by a faint sound of footsteps ascending the stairs. I waited patiently on Mathew’s bed for him to enter the room signifying that we were in the clear. I occupied myself with my phone until the door opened approximately five minutes later.
Mat walked in looking stressed, yet relieved once he saw me relaxing on his mattress. His hand combed through his hair while I wished it was my fingers intertwined with the strands.
“Good answer.” I spoke to break the silence, referring to his initial answer to Dennis about me going home. He placed himself on the bed next to me then wrapped his arm around my shoulder.
“So, what are we going to do now?” I questioned. Wondering how I was going to make it out of the house without either parent noticing.
“Looks like you’ll have to stay here with me for the next couple of hours. They’ll definitely be in bed by one. So, we’ll have to wait them out.” Mat responded before pulling himself up from where he was sitting. He crawled to the top of the mattress where his pillows laid, then held both of his arms out, opening and closing his hands to signal for me to follow.
Smiling, I turned around and followed his actions. I decided to climb over him and rest myself onto his lap. His fingertips were quick to rub up and down my back gently, erupting goosebumps on every inch of my skin.
I took his face into my palms for our mouths to play some more. My hips rested comfortably on his lap, almost as if I fit him like a puzzle piece. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t the slightest bit turned on. Due to how great he looked and how well he’d be treating me, I was shocked my mouth wasn’t where my hips were resting already.
I began to slightly grind my hips into his craving at least a little friction. Our make-out session had intensified as we both deprived each other of as much air as possible. His hands gripped tightly onto my sides steadying my pace on top of him. I felt him become hard under my body and excitement over flooded my senses.
Mathew started releasing breathy moans that he couldn’t control proving that he was enjoying this immensely. But shortly after his hands held me in place to where I couldn’t move anymore. His body shifted, flipping me over as a quiet squeal came out of my mouth, due to not expecting it.
He now rested on top of me with our lips still connected. He gave me a couple more soft kisses, before he lowered himself on my body, resting his cheek on my chest. My fingers immediately moved to his hair, playing and gently pulling at the strands. He then closed his eyes and looked like he was about to fall asleep.
It was peaceful and we were both enjoying every moment of it. After playing with his hair for a while, I noticed he had dozed off into a sleep. I smiled and admired his presence until my own eyelids became heavy, falling asleep myself.

Chapter Three
Ch. One ~ Ch. Two ~ Ch. Three ~ Ch. Four ~ Ch. Five
Word Count: 2,573
Warnings: Mature Language
Wattpad
As if going to school wasn’t boring enough on its own, Mother Nature decided to give us a rainstorm today. Thankfully the MTA station was not only directly in front of my apartment building, but also outside of where my class was being held for the day. Allowing me to avoid being completely drenched from the torrential downpour.
I didn’t mind the forecast too bad, I actually love storms. However, I enjoy them the most while I’m at home watching from the comfort of my own bed, using it as white noise to take a nap. Yet here I sit in my uncomfortable plastic seat watching droplets race each other down the glass window while a professor fifty feet away speaks gibberish into a microphone.
My class this morning was of course, one of my least favorites. Not that I hated it due to being difficult, only because I knew practically everything already and I could teach the class better than the professor himself. So, for entertainment before I passed out from pure boredom, I decided to occupy myself by texting Mathew after his morning practice had ended.
Similar to how he is in person, he was great with holding a conversation. In fact, I almost forgot I was even in class. He decided to explain more in depth on his life back home in Vancouver, telling me about his parents, sister and even about their dogs that he’s apparently terrified of. I was so invested in the stories he was telling that as he was confessing some embarrassing ones, I accidentally let out a giggle that I had to quickly cover with a fake cough to not disrupt the class. Although I couldn’t trick the people closely surrounding me as I had a permanent smile plastered on my face that my hand couldn’t even hide.
As much as I could through text, I made my potential feelings towards him obvious as he did the same for I, but after last night I couldn’t help but worry if this would work out or not. The money from nannying was the only thing covering my student loans and necessities. I was living on my own in one of the most expensive cities as a full time student. I’m fortunate enough that my distant family owned my current apartment and allowed me to reside there as long as I maintained at the very least a 3.8 GPA. However the cost of my loans, food, transportation, miscellaneous bills and school supplies were a lot to handle and nannying was the only thing flexible enough for my schedule.
Class finally released and I made my way back to the subway with only getting slightly wet from the rain. It was torturous underground as the fahrenheit was roughly around 50° and the humidity still found a way to crawl under my skin. Once on the train I took a corner seat next to the exit while a business man in a suit relaxed on my right.
My phone vibrated which I had assumed was Mathew, but to my surprise Rebecca’s name had appeared at the top of the screen accompanied by a glowing ‘slide to answer’ bar across the bottom. My heart started pounding through my chest wondering if Dennis had mentioned the event from last night. My mind imagining the worst case scenario of her telling me I can’t talk to him anymore or even worse, having them fire me.
“Hello?” I spoke nervously into the line after subconsciously sliding the white call circle with my thumb.
“Cassie! I️ hope you’re doing well!” She responded excitedly. I released an agonizing breath once hearing the positive tone she was using. She’s not the type to be passive, she’s one of those people where if she was upset or disappointed, she would let it be known.
“I’m pretty good, how are you?” I answered sweetly, now beginning to question why she would be calling mid-day like this.
“I’m wonderful, and I️ would be even better if you could do me a huuuge favor.” She suggested. Nine times out of ten this meant she needed me to babysit with short notice. However, the unusual part was she normally texts me instead of calling.
“Yeah of course, anything for you guys!” I replied joyfully. I could definitely use the extra money with the holidays slowly creeping in. Plus, I couldn’t help but still be curious if Dennis had spilled the beans yet or not, and the only way to find out was to see them face to face.
“Can you sit the kids tonight? Dennis and I️ want to have a little date night before the season starts. Mat said he’s going out with a friend but I trust you more anyway. I’m sure you probably have plans tonight but I️ figured it was worth a shot.” She explained.
‘Mat said he’s going out with a friend.’
Immediately I knew that I was ‘the friend’ since we had planned for him to come check out my lonely apartment tonight. I was bummed that I would have to cancel, but my job and income will always come first. I’m sure Mathew would understand, and if he didn’t then that would be enough verification for me to end whatever relationship we have anyway.
“No problem at all, I’ll be there!” I confirmed enthusiastically, now exiting the train that was at my stop. I covered my vacant ear with my index finger to better my hearing as I have now joined the exorbitant amount of people on the staircase back to ground level.
“Oh my gosh you are literally the best. Be here by six?” She requested. I looked down at my watch and the hands sat on the twelve and two. This gave me plenty of time to get ready before catching the LIRR in time to make it there.
“I’ll see you then.” I confirmed before we said our goodbyes and hung up the phone.
Once returning to the comfort of my warm and dry apartment, I opened a text message to send to Mathew explaining the cancellation of our plans for the night.
Cassandra: “I’m sincerely sorry I️ have to cancel tonight. Rebecca needs me to watch the kids so they can go on a date. I️ figured it’s the least I️ could do after upsetting Dennis last night.”
I pressed the send button and a little pit in my stomach started to grow. I was disappointed. I was highly anticipating hanging with him and getting to know him on a more personable level. But maybe being alone at my apartment was too quick at the moment anyway. I guess having a simple restaurant date first wouldn’t hurt.
It wasn’t long before I felt a vibration from the device in my hand. His name playing across the screen directly underneath the time. I wasted no time before entering my passcode and revealing the message.
Mathew: “Don’t worry about it I️ understand. Besides, now that I’m not going anywhere tonight, that means we get to watch the kids together ;)”
As if Dennis wasn’t skeptical enough, there was no way he was going to be enthusiastic about the two of us alone with the kids. Although, this could be the perfect opportunity to prove to him that I can maintain self control. Let’s just hope it’s the second one.
It was now a quarter till six and of course, it was still raining. I quickly sprinted to the porch where I could be protected from the precipitation. I rang the bell and it was only a matter of seconds before Rebecca opened the door, completely taking my breath away with her appearance. Wherever Dennis was planning on taking her tonight was clearly going to be elegant.
Once entering into the foyer the three kids, already dressed in their pajamas, ran up and attached to my legs. Giggles echoing through the large house as I tried to keep my balance. It warms my heart every time they do this. It doesn’t matter how much time we spend together or the short amount of time from when I last saw them. I was basically just an older sibling to them. Even the parents watched in awe as they saw the genuine joy pour out of their children.
“Alright, alright. We know you’re excited but try not to break her legs.” Rebecca recommended causing them to ease off my legs that way I could stand normal again. Dennis then appeared from the hallway handing Rebecca her purse. Nervous, I felt my body begin to sweat as I was still unsure of where we stood.
“Since it’s raining, no going outside. Also, there may be no school tomorrow, but you still have to be in bed by eight. Deal?” Dennis acknowledged the kids. They all nodded their heads before running off to the game room down the hall, instructing me to follow them. Before I went with them I turned to Rebecca as she usually has some sort of instructions to give me for the night.
“They’ve already eaten so no need to feed them tonight. If they start asking for ice cream, no problem, just make sure it’s before seven. You pretty much know the deal.” She explained while grabbing her umbrella and walking into the garage, entering their car. I nodded my head in agreement.
“Cassandra” I heard Dennis say walking up from behind me, and suddenly I wanted nothing more than to melt through the floor and disappear. “Just to let you know, Mat isn’t going out tonight anymore so he’ll be home. I️ instructed him to stay downstairs so he shouldn’t bother you guys.” He continued.
I could feel my whole body freeze when he spoke Mat’s name. I was waiting for him to say something along the lines of “If I see you with him again, we’re firing you.”, but luckily that didn’t happen.
“We should be home by midnight. If it gets too late leave Mat here with the kids and you can go home. No need to stay overnight.” He finished before entering the driver’s side of the car. I shined them a smile and waved goodbye as they left and finally I could now relax knowing Dennis is going to let this slide.
I played board games with the kids for what felt like hours but was only forty-five minutes. I allowed them to win every time because, well they’re kids, but it made this quite boring for me. However, right before seven o’clock rolled by, they began begging for ice cream just like Rebecca had foreseen.
I grabbed each of them a bowl, filling it with their desired flavors before they took off to eat in the living room while watching television. I remained in the kitchen, keeping an eye on them over the half wall, and began to rinse off the ice cream scoop before placing it in the dishwasher.
I grabbed a paper towel to dry my hands off when I felt the presence of fingertips wrapping around my waist. I quickly turned around in panic not sure of who it could be, but then I was met with a smirk that I’ve grown very fond of. A long sigh of relief escaped my mouth after seeing Mathew. My muscles relaxed and my hands that were up in surrender fell onto his chest. I could feel him giggling underneath my fingertips.
“Oh I’m sorry, did I scare you?” He teased, with his arms still around my waist as he pulled me closer to him. Between his toned muscles under my palms and the way his features crinkled in laugher, I was lost in a daze. I never thought I would see the day where I would be this attracted to someone. Especially someone I had just met.
Suddenly, a loud noise from the television reminded me of the kids in the next room. I quickly pushed him off of me looking towards the children to make sure they didn’t see anything that had just happened.
“You can’t do this around the kids.” I whispered anxiously to Mat.
“I️ can’t hug you? Come on it’s not like we’re sticking our tongues down each other’s throats.” He instigated. I rolled my eyes and ignored his comment. Moving out of his touch and beginning to tidy up the kitchen once again.
It wasn’t long before his hands found their way around my waist once again. This time feeling his entire body against my back, and his breath near my ear. My heart stopped.
“But I mean, we totally could if you wanted to.” He whispered in my ear erupting goosebumps down my arms. Of course I wanted to. I wanted nothing more at the moment, but this was not the time and place. It took everything out of my to pull from his touch. I lightly tapped my elbow onto his torso behind me before stepping out of his arms. I didn’t want to make an actual impact, just enough that he got the point. I turned around and sent him a dismayed glare.
“I️ was joking! Partially.” He continued as I tried my hardest to fight back a smile.
“Dennis made it clear he didn’t want you around us tonight. The last thing I️ need is the kids telling him we were hugging in the kitchen.” I explained, turning Mathew around and playfully pushing his back towards the stairs that lead to the basement.
“Oh no, not hugging. Only married people do that.” Mat snidely joked. I scuffed behind him as I struggled with my attempt to push him towards the door. I got him halfway there before he decided to bend his knees and lay all of his weight onto my arms, his head falling to my shoulder.
“Oh no, my knees gave out. Looks like you’re going to have to carry me.” Mathew played as I used all my strength to keep both him and I from falling over. All while trying to keep my laughing to a minimum so he couldn’t hear.
“I️ came here to babysit them, not you!” I teased finally getting him to the basement door. Yet, he didn’t let off any of his weight.
“I’ll go down on one condition.” He then added, turning his head that was still on my shoulder towards my face, where his nose now tickled my cheek.
“You have to join me down there once the kids go to sleep.” He whispered so low to the point I almost didn’t hear it.
This sent me into a whirlwind of thoughts. I wouldn’t have to worry about the kids seeing, since they’re the best sleepers ever and never come out of their rooms. Plus, it's always quiet and lonely after they’re asleep. I normally just sit on the couch and watch TV anyway. Dennis told me to head home after they were all in bed, but staying another couple of minutes couldn’t hurt right? Especially since they were expected to come home late. It sounded almost foolproof.
“Ugh my legs!” Mat said, clearly becoming impatient for my answer, as he leaned even more weight onto me.
“Okay okay okay! I’ll see you down there at 8:30.” I answered almost toppling over onto the floor. “Can’t wait.” He stated while finally standing up straight, freeing my muscles as he quickly and happily descended down the stairs.

The next morning I woke up and started getting ready before planning to go see my family next door. I decided to shower in the guest room because I liked their bathroom better than the one in my parents’ house. After getting ready, I left my hair out to air dry, changed my clothes and started walking down the stairs.
Upon entering the kitchen I noticed Mat was sitting at the table reading the daily paper. I stopped in the hallway and began to contemplate whether I wanted to walk past the table to the side door that was closest to my parents' house, or avoid him and walk out the front door.
“Good morning.” I heard Mathew speak from the table. I jumped as I was not expecting him to notice me. I peeked farther around the corner and his sight stayed locked on the newspaper. Not even looking up when he spoke, so then I was left to wonder if he was even talking to me.
“Good shower?” He questioned, peaking an eye over the top of the paper he occupied himself with. Yeah, he was definitely talking to me. My mind began scanning for answers. I didn’t know how to respond, and I was still shocked he was even in the home.
“I️.. uh.. yeah. Yeah, it was nice.” I stuttered. Kicking myself in my mind for being so awkward. Normally, I was very confident and didn’t have problems speaking to people. But for some reason he throws me off. Especially since he’s staying in the house.
He found my stuttering amusing. Giggling after I finished speaking, leaning his head further down to hide his smile behind the paper. “So, what are your plans for today?” He inquired once containing his light laughter. Sparking loads of questions I began to ask myself.
“Why is he asking me that? Do I appear to be doing something? Is he asking me to hang out? Wait, no. He wouldn’t. We just met. Do I tell him I’m hanging out with my parents? Or make up some cool story? I don’t want him to think I’m boring or something. Ugh.” After staring off into space for several seconds too long, I decided the easiest route would be to tell the truth.
“My parents live next door. I’m going to go hang out with them for the day.” I answered. Beginning to walk closer to the side door in hopes of a quick escape from the awkward tension I accidentally created.
“Aww, you’re not going to stay here today? Maybe you should come over later for a game of street hockey?” He proposed placing the paper down onto the table. My heart began to beat so loud that I thought he would be able to see it. So many thoughts started to flow through my mind that I couldn’t even understand myself anymore.
“I️ just figured it would make it an even 2 on 2.” He added. “Plus, the kids said you were pretty good.” He continued, this time leaning back in the chair, crossing his arms. An instigating smirk plastered across his face, making it clear he was trying to compete with me, and boy was it intriguing.
“I don’t know. I️ wouldn't want to embarrass you.” I retorted. Finally, the confidence I knew and loved coming back. I crossed my arms over my chest, giving him the exact same smirk he had just given me.
“Well then maybe you’ll just have to play on my team.” He proposed. At this point the organs in my body felt like they were melting. He was so damn good at knowing what to say and I’ve only known him for less than 24 hours. But it was fun to have a little competition around.
“That wouldn’t be fair to the kids.” I acknowledged. Even though I wanted to be on his team more than anything else at the moment, I wanted to make him work for it.
“In that case, we’ll just have to play one on one after dark. That way no one would be around to see you get embarrassed.” He teased, fueling the fire that had started in my stomach.
“Driveway at midnight. I’ll meet you there.” Mat concluded. Picking himself up from the chair and walking out into the other room. Refusing to break eye contact with me until he was behind the wall that covered the hallway.
Once he disappeared around the corner all my senses started coming back to me. I can’t figure out how he makes me feel that way. Almost as if I was floating and the room is spinning around us. This was definitely something I wasn’t used to.
The rest of the day I spent enjoying time with my family. We took a trip into the city to do a little shopping and find something good to eat. However, no matter how much we did that day, Mathew sat in the back of my mind. I wouldn’t say I was thinking about him constantly, but whenever my mind had a break, it would anticipate the date we had semi planned for the night.
Midnight rolled around, and not wanting to seem too thrilled about the meet up, I decided to be ‘fashionably late’. Which, only ended up being about five minutes past midnight due to the anticipation building up inside of me.
Looking out from my parents side door I saw Mat occupying himself already by shooting pucks into the net. It may have been dark out, but I could still notice him in the dim moonlight. Covered by a tan jacket and again, black skinny jeans.
Quietly, I walked out of the house and headed to my parents garage where I had kept some of my old personal sticks. I used to play when I was younger. Always stuck on the all boys team either by myself or with one other girl. I absolutely loved playing but once I started college, I didn’t have time anymore. Either way it earned me enough skill to not embarrass myself tonight.
“You’ve got your own sticks, eh?” Mat questioned as I began walking to where he was standing. He hesitated shooting a ball he had prepared to give me his full attention.
“I️ played a little bit in my days.” I admitted, taking a tennis ball and stickhandling to show off a little bit.
“That’s cute.” Mat said giggling under his breath. Turning his back to me so he could assemble his shot once again. He then hit the crossbar deflecting his shot. That’s what he gets for making fun of me.
“That’s cute.” I imitated before taking a shot of my own, sending it straight through the right corner of the net. He then turned around to face me with an impressed grin across his face.
“So, where are you from?” He questioned, leaning against his stick to watch me. His cheek gently resting on his hands that sat on the top knob. I couldn’t help but smile due to the soft appearance he had. I felt comfortable talking to him, his personality made him inviting and it seems as if all the first impression butterflies had now settled.
“Here. What about you?” I responded, continuing to take shots from the pile of plastic pucks and tennis balls on the concrete.
“Canada.” He answered continuing to admire my company from just a mere foot away. Luckily no lights were on outside, that way he couldn’t see my features. As they were probably equivalent to someone who just found out they had won the lottery.
“I’ve always wanted to go there.” I confessed now focusing only on my stickhandling to avoid possibly staring at him absentmindedly like I did last night.
“I️ can take you one day if you want. I’ll bring you to a game. Take you around the city.” He offered. I paused my actions then stared up at him. Unfortunately, there was a confused demeanor across my face due to his proposal as it wasn’t something I was expecting, since this was the first real conversation we’ve truly had.
“I️.. uh.. I’m sure the kids would love it too. They seem to like hanging out with you.” He attempted to correct himself, making it seem like it wasn’t only for me. I began to snicker under my breath, flattered.
“I️ would love that actually. I️ mean.. we would love that.” I stated with a smirk, which Mat clearly took a liking to. He started smiling from ear to ear, looking towards the ground that way I couldn’t notice his cheeks blushing.
Throughout the night the conversations never stopped. He was very curious to figure out my personality and see the things I liked. Comparing and contrasting to his own personal preferences. There were lots of laughs and smiles being exchanged, making it feel as if this was something out of a fairy tale.
After a while Mat had positioned himself in front of the net to block the shots I was making. Purposely to upset me. So, I kept getting closer to the net that way it'd be harder for him to stop them.
After about three more shots of making it past him and into the goal, he dropped his stick and started walking towards me. He grabbed me from behind and wrapped his arms around my body that way I couldn’t shoot anymore. Both of us began laughing like little preschool children.
“You’re cheating you can’t do this!” I argued in between cackles.
“Goalie interference! No goal!” Mat began to yell back in between his own laughter. Butterflies infested my stomach as I felt his body up against my back with his giggles in my ear. Eventually, I gave up trying to fight him off as it was impossible with the grip he had on me. I allowed him to basically just hug me from behind, enjoying our intimate moment.
His grip eventually loosened releasing me. Still giggling, I turned around with my back now against the side post of the net and Mathew standing in front of me. Once steadying my breathing, I looked up and noticed his eyes reflecting seduction, accompanied by a smirk that made my body feel hot even with how cold it was outside.
He was standing only centimeters away when we found ourselves staring amusedly into each other’s eyes, wondering what was going to happen next. His eyes watched every move my eyes and mouth made. Studying me. Making me want to kiss him desperately, but I refused to make the first move.
He started inching closer making my mind race a million miles a minute. I felt his curled index finger gently lift my chin up towards his while his opposite hand pulled my back into him, causing our stomachs to touch. My eyelids slowly began to shut but before either of our lips made contact we were blinded by two headlights pulling into the driveway. My hands shot up to cover my face and protect my eyes as I couldn’t see anything other than the beaming white orbs. Mathew quickly backed off to watch the lights himself, wondering who was coming home this late at night.
The car pulled up almost as close as it could get to us as we simultaneously observed the vehicle waiting for answers. I heard the engine cut off yet the lights were still too bright to even make out what kind of car it was, no longer who was in it. Soon enough the driver side door opened and shut right before Dennis walked around the front, blocking one of the lights, making it possible to see him.
“You guys are out pretty late huh?” He inquired while his hand was fumbling his keys and sight flicking between Mat and I. My body practically froze. Not only from trying to process almost making out with Mathew, but now from being caught alone with him at 2:30AM.
“Believe it or not, she was showing me some shooting tricks.” Mat spoke attempting to cover the ground with Dennis. Thank god he could speak because I couldn’t even think of a single letter in the alphabet at the moment.
“At 2:30 in the morning?” He continued to press leaving Mat speechless. Damn, now I didn’t have a choice but to say something.
“I️ was with my parents all day, so we didn’t have a chance until after they went to bed because I️ didn't want to neglect them.” I added in hopes of sounding convincing enough to be left alone. Which, it seemed to have worked.
“Understood. Just try to keep it quiet, the kids’ rooms are right above your heads. Also, you should be heading to bed soon Barz. You’ve got practice in seven hours.” Dennis finished before entering the door to his house, the car lights finally shutting off.
Relieved, Mat and I both sighed after he entered. Happy we didn’t have to go through a lecture. Knowing very well he saw what was going on, letting us off the hook, for now.
Ignoring what had happened, I began to retrieve the tennis balls to help clear the driveway for the night while Mat moved the net and our sticks over by their garage. I finished putting the last ball in the bucket and noticed him fiddling with the sticks nervously as I walked up the concrete to place the bucket next to him.
“So, I’ll see you tomorrow?” Mat questioned. Turning his body to face me as I grabbed my stick from the top of the net.
“I’ll be back home and at school tomorrow.” I admitted just above a whisper, beginning to walk towards my parents side door.
“Back home? I️ thought you lived here?” He then questioned apprehensively. Following by my side to make sure I arrived home safely.
“Well, my parents live here..” I said pointing to the house. “I️ live in an apartment in the city.”
“By yourself?” He continued to ask. I laughed at his curiosity while we now stood at the destination with my left hand on the door knob.
“Yeah, by myself. You might have to stop by sometime.” I offered, hitting the side of his arm with my elbow trying to deplete the uncomfortable tension Dennis had created that had clearly made Mat nervous.
Unexpectedly he pulled me into a hug. The aroma of a fresh cologne taking over my senses. I relaxed myself into him as I wrapped my arms around his waist. Resting my head on his chest, allowing my eyes to shut for a moment and enjoy the embrace.
The hug loosened so I dropped my arms down by my side and when to open the door next to us, but before I could turn the knob Mat placed his hands on either of my shoulders, positioning himself to speak into my ear.
“So basically, I'll see you tomorrow.” He whispered, then placed a kiss on my cheek before quickly jogging across both driveways to his own house. Once he got to his door he turned around and waved one last time while we both entered our heated homes. I shook my head and rolled my eyes while a flattered scoff left my lips. My cheeks feeling sore from the amount of smiling I’ve done throughout the night.
After entering the dark kitchen, as I was kicking my shoes off, I noticed my stick was still in my hand and I had forgotten to return it to the garage. Too tired and lazy to go back outside, I placed it in the corner by the door planning to put it away when I leave tomorrow. However, something at the foot of the stick caught my attention. It had distinctive black markings across the tape, which was strange since I had only played with plastic pucks and tennis balls. Curious, I flipped it towards the dim moonlight shining from the window to get a better look. I then noticed Mathew had written his phone number followed by a winky face across the tape on the foot.
A permanent smile plastered onto my face that nothing could prevent. I felt the interior of my body warm up like an oven with excitement. Now knowing 100% that Mat was just as interested in me as I was to him, and I couldn’t wait to see where this was going to go. Especially with how amazing tonight went.

Chapter One
Ch. One ~ Ch. Two ~ Part Three ~ Ch. Four ~ Ch. Five
A/N: Yes, a lot of you may recognize this specific title/player combo from a blog who no longer wishes to associate with writing. I privately messaged them and requested permission to read their previous work that has always been my favorite. Not only did they give me access to read everything, but they’re allowing me to have all of their series and tweak them into my own. The story line will remain the same, but I have decided to change the POV that way I can slightly customize the story. I apologize if you dislike not having “Y/N” in a story but as I continue to study creative writing, I believe it makes a story easier to read. I hope you enjoy, I greatly appreciate feedback!
Check out my Wattpad where I will be posting this series and others as I go!

________
I’ve been nannying the Seidenberg’s for a little over a year now. My parents lived in the house next door while I went to a university in the city, living in an apartment close to campus. Dennis and Rebecca figured since I was a familiar face to the kids, with always being invited to small holiday get together parties my parents would hold, that I would be the best option to take care of them. That way Rebecca could go on road trips, or have fun with the other WAGs without worrying about the kids.
I got along with the three kids very well. After being with them for over a year, they feel like my own siblings. The boy, Dakota, was the youngest and he always loved to play street hockey with me in the driveway. The girls would play along as well, but he’d always be the first to ask. The two girls, Natalie and Marisa, always brought back memories of my old dancing days. Wanting to stay downstairs and do gymnastics or make up dance routines until they couldn’t stand anymore. As you can see, the kids kept me very busy and active.
Normally, I would only nanny on weeks when Dennis went on road trips and Rebecca wanted to join. Or random nights that the WAGs decided to hang out. However, over the summer I found myself at their house quite often. Sometimes only because the kids just wanted to hang out and play.
The summer was coming to an end and the hockey season was about to pick up once again. College was unfortunately beginning to get rough as it was now my senior year, but the kids always knew how to ease my stress and bring the child out of me, which is why I enjoy being with them so much.
Tonight, Dennis and Rebecca had gone out to attend the season kickoff dinner. They requested that I sleep over their house as they planned not to be coming home until after midnight. They have a guest room on the upper level that I usually sleep in during the road trip weeks. The room is comfortable, I love it. They even allow me to customize it and accent the walls with pictures that the kids have drawn for me.
After a couple hours of driveway street hockey, once the sun started setting, I then settled on the basement couch with the kids, popping in a Disney movie. The time was inching close to midnight, but we all ignored it. The girls laid on either side of me, with my arms around their shoulders while theirs crossed my stomach. While Dakota laid on the floor by himself in front of us. It wasn’t long before all three of them had dozed off into a sleep. Not wanting to move and wake them up, I figured I should drift off into sleep as well.
I heard a sudden noise which broke me out of my sleep. My mom instincts kicked in remembering the kids were with me. I quickly jumped up to see who was in the room, ready to attack if it was an intruder. The lights were still dim in the basement as the television asking if we were still watching was the only thing to illuminate the space. It took a moment for my eyes to adjust but soon enough I heard Dennis’ hushed voice.
“Sorry! We were trying to be quiet.” He whispered tiptoeing down the last stair. After his statement I was blinded by the overhead lights being turned on. My hands quickly covered my eyes, rubbing them to regulate my sight once again. I then heard the kids simultaneously groan “daaaad” behind me as they woke.
“Come on. Go on up to your rooms. I️ know Cassandra would love to be laying in her bed right now.” He continued. He definitely wasn’t lying about me wanting to be in my bed at the moment. Laying on the couch left a kink in my neck that I couldn’t help but absentmindedly attempt to massage out.
Once the kids retreated up the stairs, I noticed a male, averaging the same age as me, walk out of the spare bedroom adjacent from the couch. He had long, dark, slicked back hair. He was wearing a T-shirt that showed off his toned veiny arms, paired with black skinny jeans.
I’d be lying if I said he wasn’t attractive. In fact, he was almost unreal. His face was perfectly chiseled while his body looked like it was carved by angels. I couldn’t help but stare at every little feature on him. It was almost as if he had just walked out of a movie. Next thing I know my eyes trace back up to his face and he’s staring right back at me. I felt my heart beat rise as a genuine smile that could light up the whole room pulled across his lips.
I was guessing he was one of Dennis’ teammates. As if the Islander t-shirt didn’t give that away. But, he definitely wasn’t one that has been invited over to the house previously as I’ve clearly never seen him before. So, I figured he was a rookie and Dennis invited him over for dinner.
“Cassandra, so sorry I️ probably should introduce the two of you.” Dennis began once he returned from bringing the kids upstairs. I hadn’t noticed earlier, but I was staring at the boy in silence for an uncomfortable amount of time. Causing heat to immediately flood my cheeks in embarrassment. Figuring there was no way he didn’t take notice to my lengthy admiration.
“This is Mathew. Mathew this is Cassandra.” He introduced. Mat was quick to hold his hand out to me, stepping closer. “Hey, it’s nice to meet you.” He stated with a distinct Canadian accent. I took his hand into mine and shook lightly as I silently prayed he wouldn’t notice how sweaty my palm was.
“Same to you.” I responded. Not nearly as confident as I pleased. In fact, I’m pretty sure I sounded like a shy 3rd grader introducing themselves to the whole class on the first day of school.
“Mat is a rookie this year. So Rebecca and I️ decided it would be smart to allow him to stay here for his first season. Just so you don’t get confused when you see him walking around.” Dennis exclaimed.
As he finished, I was pretty sure all of the color in my skin sank, just like thermometers do when the temperatures drop. The thought of having this painfully attractive boy around the house excited me in all the wrong ways. The last thing I needed was a distraction. However, he would be gone on road trips the same time as Dennis. So, hopefully I wouldn’t see him that often anyway. Even though I’d hate to admit that I really wanted too.
“Welcome!” Was all I could say as I was still in shock from the whole situation. I attempted to sound as enthusiastic as possible. Mat sent me a sympathetic smirk. Almost like he felt bad for being here even though it wasn’t even my house. Making me feel self conscious of possibly sending him the wrong vibes.
“Well Mat, I️’m going to go grab your other suitcase. Make yourself feel at home.” Dennis offered before making his way back up the stairs. Eternally I began screaming for him to come back. Not wanting to be left alone with the boy whose bones I was ready to jump at any given moment.
“Does your neck hurt?” He questioned. My gaze shifted from the stairwell to Mat who only stood about a foot away from me. My head cocked to the side in confusion, while my face muscles tightened, wondering how in the world he knew about the kink that had formed in my neck.
“How did you…?” I began to ask before Mat cut me off to explain.
“You’ve been rubbing it since you stood up.” He answered, pointing to his own neck to imitate my movements. He spoke low and cleared his throat. Making me feel slightly better about this situation seeing he seemed to be just as awkward as I was at the moment.
“Yeah. I slept wrong on the couch and now I️ have a knot in my neck.” I responded while rolling my eyes, annoyed with the pain.
“Want me to try and rub it out?” Mat proposed. A moment of silence fell over the room. My mind immediately wanted to respond with ‘Boy you could rub whatever you want’ but obviously that wasn’t reasonable. I tried to stay calm as my heart began to race even faster to the point I would bet he could hear it.
“Can you please?” I replied as my mind began to contemplate if that was a good enough response or not.
Mat then moved behind me. His fingertips, oh so gently, braced themselves on my right shoulder. His thumbs then started making small circle movements into my skin causing goosebumps to rise that I hoped he didn’t notice. But taking by the deep chuckle I just heard behind me.. he noticed.. and is flattered.
The pressure from his thumbs found the perfect spot on the knot. Kneading it away as my facial expressions tighten in pain. Knowing that it has to hurt before the muscles will relax.
“Am I️ getting it?” Mathew questioned. He knew the answer. He could tell by my face, the goosebumps and the way my shoulder was slowly moving farther away from him. He knew I was enjoying it, so he was instigating.
“Yes.” I groaned with my teeth grinding together. Features still continuing to tense. However, he slowly and gently removed his fingertips as I then felt total relief over my neck and shoulder. I circled my arm around a couple times to ensure the pain was gone and behold, Mat had magical hands.
“Thank you a lot, it feels so much better.” I spoke relieved, turning to face Mat who was standing much closer than I had anticipated.
“No problem. Anytime.” He whispered due to the small amount of space separating us. His statement was followed by a wink that was powerful enough to blow me off my feet. But to maintain my authority, I plastered a smirk on my face, and winked back.
“Have a good night.” I said before confidently turning around to walk up the stairs. Proud of myself for appearing unfazed instead of the sweaty mess I was on the inside.
“Oh, I️ will. Goodnight.” Mat responded. Thankfully I was facing the opposite direction, that way he couldn’t see my eyes roll through my head at his sly comment.
Once reaching my bedroom on the upper level I laid in my bed staring at the ceiling fan. I knew it would be unprofessional and a risk to my job if I even thought about attempting anything with Mat. But at the same time, he was almost impossible to resist. Who knows though, he might not even be interested at all and I’m wasting my time thinking about him for nothing. Yet, it was also so hard to get him off my mind.

___________________________________________
“Y/n come on you’ve been in the house all day!” Stephanie shouted as she gripped your wrists trying to get you to follow her outside.
It’s been a week since you and Auston had made it “official” agreeing to give him a chance. Things had been going great and you’ve been spending a lot of time together. Although, you’ve been friends for years, you began learning more about each other. You were both sharing a deeper, more domestic side of yourselves.
You felt bad however, because you definitely started hanging around him more often, and the girls took notice. They weren’t offended or upset, they understood, but they definitely wanted some time with you before you all left to go home.
“It’s supposed to rain any minute I don’t feel like getting wet!” You argued in between giggles. Stephanie, Sydney and Lexi were trying to get you to lay out on the dock with them. Since the clouds were mostly covering the sky, it made it much cooler that way you could enjoy the sounds of the waves. However, a storm was ready to hit any moment.
“Stop being a baby the dock is literally a three minute walk!” Sydney returned coming up from behind you to push your back towards Steph. Finally, you gave in, figuring a little rain would hurt anyway.
“Fine!” You sighed easing your strength from Steph’s pull. You left your phone and your watch on the kitchen table that way they wouldn’t get ruined in the rain before following the three girls out onto the beach.
The sun was completely covered and there was a strong breeze that whipped across the beach. The forecast didn’t call for rain for another two hours, but you could feel the humidity outside rising fast, making you believe it was coming within the next twenty minutes.
You tried to ignore it as the four of you finally arrived at the dock, the echo from the wood mimicking the sounds of your feet as you walked down. It was a private beach so the only people that went on it were the ones that lived here but due to the weather, everyone had stayed inside.
You made it down to the end and you all sat with your feet dangling off the edge. The waves were slightly more rough than usual, thanks to the wind, but it made for a very calming sound. The water crashed against the poles of the dock spraying the bottom of your legs with the room temperature ocean. At first you didn’t want to come all of the way out here especially with the rain, but now you realized how soothing it was. Between the breeze, sound and water, it felt peaceful.
Within the last couple of days, you’ve worried about returning to Toronto. Sure, this week that you’ve spent with Auston has been amazing, but you knew things would change once returning to the city. You’d have to return to your work and he with his practices, and soon enough, games would start up again. Yeah it was easy being friends during his past seasons, but you also didn’t crave to see him as much.
The thought wondered in the back of your mind constantly. It was one of those things you would worry about until you get in the moment and see how it actually is. But for now, the ocean was enough of a distraction to keep those thoughts at bay.
“Y/n?” Sydney questioned tapping the side of your arm with her elbow. You turned to look at her and noticed all three girls were giving you a confused stare.
“What?” You asked, clearly missing something.
“What has you spacing out like that? We’ve been talking to you for the past two minutes.” Lexi jumped in. Obviously while focusing on the waves and Toronto you were too concentrated to hear anything else.
“Oh nothing. I was just listening to the waves.” You said looking back at the white caps below the dock.
“Why are you lying? Is it Auston? I swear if he hurts you I’ll personally get Matt to kick his ass.” Sydney added. Her comment made you laugh as you shook your head.
“He didn’t do anything Syd, it’s nothing I promise.” You said in between giggles, laying down onto the dock behind you. You watched the clouds move swiftly above you trying to make shapes out of them.
“Well just know as soon as he does, I’m flying back to Toronto, and I’m bringing Matt with me.” Sydney continued laughing on her own. Sydney was your closest friend out of all the girls. She acted like a big sister to you. When you found out she was moving back to New York it definitely hurt you a little, but you knew she was ready to go back home so, you were happy for her.
As you were laying down you felt a drop of water land on your cheek. You decided to ignore it until another one hit, and then another. Eventually they started falling by twos, then threes, and that’s when you knew the rain was coming and coming fast. You sat back up and turned to the girls who were occupied in their own conversations. You then noticed a wall of rain coming fast from over the ocean.
“Do you guys think we should head back?” You questioned looking at the rain wall with wide eyes. It was pouring only a near mile in the distance and if you left now, by the time you got back to the house it would be here.
“Oh, come on it’s just a little rain.” Stephanie said nonchalantly. You almost wondered if she had seen the rain or not but there was no way she didn’t. Moments later a loud crash of thunder echoed across the water and waves of the ocean that made all four of you jump.
“On second thought, Mitch is probably looking for me, let’s go back.” Stephanie quickly said standing up on the dock. You laughed at the fact nature worked in your favor before getting up yourself and following the girls off the dock. By the time your feet stepped off the wood and onto the sand, the pouring rain had reached you guys, beginning to soak your bodies.
You all started laughing and running towards the house seeing who could get there the fastest. You weren’t scared of the lightning or thunder as it was still far out over the water, so this was more of a fun time to let loose. The cold rain cooled you off of the humidity as you guys started singing and giggling along while retreating back to the house.
~ Auston’s POV ~
“Y/n?” I called as I walked through the silent house. Most of the boys were still sleeping in as they usually do on their days off. Sleep in until 2pm and stay up until 2am. I normally wake up around noon and hand out until everyone else awakens. However, usually the girls are up by 10am talking in the kitchen. But this morning it was quiet.
I walked upstairs to her bedroom and the door was open with the room was vacant. I headed back one more flight downstairs to the kitchen/living room area and not a single person was to be found other than Mitch eating away at a bag of chips on the couch, flicking through the channels on the television
“Where is everyone?” I asked him while walking over to the fridge to grab a water bottle.
“Sleeping.” Mitch answered sarcastically as if I should have known that. I rolled my eyes taking a sip of water before questioning again.
“Where’s y/n.” I inquired walked over to stand beside the couch.
“Oh, her and the girls went out to the dock real quick.” He answered unphased, not removing his sight from the TV that now played some old 90s cartoon.
“Isn’t it about to storm outside?” I questioned looking out at the clouds in the sky that looked like they were going to drop water any minute.
“Not for like, another two hours.” Mitch stated clearly annoyed that I was interrupting his cartoon show. I rolled my eyes again at him before moving to look out the patio door windows. There was a clear wall of rain moving quickly towards the sand that obviously wouldn’t take two hours to arrive.
Before I could think anything more of it, I heard a loud vibrating buzz come from the table behind me. It was a symphony of echoes playing through the hallow wood. I turned and noticed y/n’s phone laying on the table, lit up with a call. Mitch paused the television to grab himself a drink when he heard the sound as well, walking over.
“Whose phone is that?” He inquired leaning over the table to snoop at the call.
“Jack? Like y/n’s ex Jack?” He continued squinting at the screen. The moment he said his name I felt my heart drop down to my stomach. Not believing him I looked at the screen myself seeing his name lit up across the top.
“What the fuck does he want?” I mumbled under my breath, eyebrows tightening in confusion. It took everything out of me not to answer, but I had no business to.
“I don’t know, why don’t you ask him.” Mitch said sarcastically, laughing at me noticing how defensive I got once seeing his name. Finally, the call stopped, and the sound seized.
I began walking away from the table to sit on the couch when the vibrating started once again. His name playing across the top of the screen just like it did moments ago.
“Dude, why are you so bothered? They’re still friends you know.” Mitch accused bumping into me as he retreated to the couch.
“I’m not bothered.” I spoke shrugging my shoulders to seem unphased, moving away from the table to sit next to Mitch.
“That’s not what your water bottle is saying.” He teased, I looked down at my hand that was clenching my water bottle to the point it would probably pop soon. I eased my grip and took a breath to calm myself. I couldn’t even explain why I was so bothered. I know y/n wouldn’t go back to him. He lives in Europe now. Maybe it was just the years of jealousy building up.
Suddenly a loud clash of thunder sounded from the outside scaring both Mitch and I. We then turned to each other with wide eyes realizing the girls were still outside. Soon after the sound of rain began tapping on the windows and balcony outside. Both of us ran out onto the covered part of the balcony to see the dock in the distance and make sure they were all okay. We had a sigh of relief once seeing they were all frolicking in the rain towards the house, clearly enjoying the rain way more than they should have been. Matt showed up behind us shortly after hearing the thunder as well and worrying about Sydney.
“So, we all agree not to let them do that again, right?” Matt said while looking out at the storm that was approaching. Mitch and I nodded our heads before going to get towels to dry them off once they came in.
They eventually stumbled into the house soaking wet, still laughing from how much fun it apparently was. I was happy to see y/n smiling and laughing but if they could do that while not out in a storm, that’d be better.
“Glad you’re ok.” I whispered draping the towel around her shoulders.
“It’s just a little rain. The storm won’t hit for another half hour.” She argued. She then started shivering and her teeth chattered due to the air conditioning in the house since she was soaking wet, so I definitely needed to get her warm.
~ Your POV ~
At first you didn’t notice but the whole house felt like an ice box once you stepped in. Normally you wouldn’t feel the breeze from the vents but now it felt as if you were on top of a mountain. You tried to hide your shivers, but your jaw and shoulders couldn’t help but jitter.
“Come on, let’s get you warmed up.” Auston stated guiding you to your room. You could tell he had obviously been nervous thinking the storm was a lot closer than it actually was, but it made you feel good that he cared.
You stepped into the bathroom alone to change your clothes and dry off. You figured you’d let your hair air dry and hung the towel up over the shower curtain pole also to dry. After finishing up you walked back into the bedroom and saw Auston sitting on the side of your bed, with concern still written all over his face.
“Oh, come on, there’s no way a little rain and thunder scared you that bad.” You laughed, placing your hands on his shoulders to steady yourself as you climbed onto the bed to straddle his lap. His arms immediately wrapped around your waist to hold you secure onto him. His face pulled into a smirk admiring your presence, but you could see there was something still bothering him.
“What’s wrong?” You whispered, not needing to speak loudly with the small amount of space separating you two. You could see in his eyes there was some sense of fear or doubt.
“I know it’s none of my business, you don’t have to answer if you don’t want to, but do you still talk to Jack?” Auston questioned. Your face immediately tightened in confusion. You didn’t know why he would ask that or where it was coming from. The question didn’t bother you, sometimes you wondered about his ex too, you just had no idea why he was asking.
“He’ll text me and ask how I am every once in a while, but nothing more than that. I haven’t been responding at all this week.” You explained studying his facial features as you spoke. You noticed they relaxed once you answered.
“Why do you ask?” You continued. He looked down not wanting to make eye contact. You could tell he didn’t want to bring it up or talk about him, but he was curious.
“You left your phone on the table and he called a couple times. I was just wondering if that was normal or not. But I know you guys are still friends, I trust you. Curiosity just got to me.” He explained himself. His statement reminded you of the call he had made to you in the restaurant. He never called twice, and the one time he did it was to tell you he missed you. So, maybe it was a good thing you weren’t there to answer.
“Well trust me you don’t have to worry about him. He’s in a whole different continent doing busy and important things.” You admitted, leaning in to plant a kiss on his lips. You felt them pull into a smirk again after you made your accusation and your lips pressed against his. You could feel the stress ease off of him as the kiss lingered. His arms tightened behind you as it prolonged with him slipping his tongue between your lips.
His breath was becoming more steady and you could feel his heartbeat against your chest. Your fingertips rubbed the hair on his neck while the kiss continued. You completely forgot about Jack as the sounds of your mouths moving simultaneously filled the room and the touch of his warm body against yours rose goose bumps.
Another loud crash of thunder shook the house causing the two of you to get startled and break apart. You both giggled due to the scare, then you decided to hop off his lap to lay down on the bed. You patted the comforter next to you for him to lie down before resting your head on his chest and listening to the thunder storm until you fell asleep.

Part One ~ Part Two ~ Part Three ~ Part Four

__________________________________________
You all arrived at the restaurant and it was a little fancier than you had expected. The lights were dimmed with rare artwork covering the walls. The tables were covered in black threads accented with custom made china and an origami cloth napkin. It wasn’t the usual for this part of the shore, usually the venues were more casual. It was still a family owned restaurant, they were just a little more exquisite than the rest.
Your eyes scanned the area in awe not being used to the dramatic high class scene. You didn’t mind it. It was beautiful and chic, but definitely made you feel pressured to pay more attention to crossing your legs and keeping your elbows off the table. Your friends around you didn’t seem phased at all as they walked through in their own casual conversations, but you couldn’t help to admire the classy structure surrounding you in shock.
Luckily, Matt and Syd had requested a private room away from the rest of the restaurant easing some stress off of you. Not needing to worry about people judging your manners or the way you dressed or anything of that matter. The room overlooked one of the marinas in the Little Egg Harbor on the other side of the island. The windows were wide open allowing the sweet smell of the ocean flow through the room along with the wind. The sun had saturated the sky in several different colors that reflected off everything in the space.
You snapped out of your trance once you noticed Auston pull a seat out for you to sit in. You sent him a smile before picking up your dress from behind you and sitting on the soft cushion of the chair, scooting it in until you rested directly in front of the table. Auston took the seat on your left while Sydney sat in the one on the right. Directly across was Stephanie with Mitch in front of Auston. At first you were unsure about Mitch sitting so close knowing he was ready to tease the two of you at any given moment, but you figured Steph would hit him for bothering you if permitted.
The waiter came around and dropped off the menus in front of everyone while filling up the crystal glassware with sparkling water. The restaurant definitely took you by surprise not being what you were used to, but it felt nice to be spoiled for a night. Besides the waiter seemed very laid back and nice as well. You opened up the menu and took time to read everything on it. It wasn’t much and majority of it was seafood but eventually you found a meal that sounded intriguing and something you’d definitely want to try. The prices caused you to almost have a heart attack but luckily Matt offered to pick up the tab.
Everyone occupied themselves in their own little conversations while you remained silent listening in. Normally you would start a convo with no problem but today was one of those days you wanted to relax and listen to everyone else speak. You were also trying to avoid overthinking about Auston. There was a lot of emotions involved. You were happy and excited to finally be with him but also nervous that something could go wrong. You don’t even know what could possibly go wrong but of course your mind had to think that way anyway.
Stephanie and Sydney were talking about a new boutique that opened in Toronto while the boys argued over which celebrities would win in a wrestling match. They definitely kept you entertained and distracted which was perfect.
Eventually the appetizers came to table and the conversations broke off, having everyone stuff their mouths with food instead of words. The starters were small dainty foods, but they were good and you enjoyed them. After you had finished off your last one, not wanting to eat too much before dinner, you heard your phone start to buzz on the table in between you and Sydney.
You looked down and noticed Jack’s name light up across the screen and immediately it felt like your stomach hit the floor. You stared at the device as it continued to buzz not knowing what to do. Thoughts flooded your mind. What did he want? Did he need something? What was he calling to talk about?
You looked up to Sydney next to you who noticed the name as well since she was right next to you. Her eyes just as wide as yours in shock. She began shaking her head to say ‘no’.
“Don’t do it y/n. You know better.” She stared while continuing to shake her head. She was right, but you didn’t want to listen. It was taking everything out of you not to answer that call in that moment. But finally, the torture came to an end as the phone stopped vibrating and your lock screen was present on the front once again occupied by a missed call notification.
You looked up at Sydney once again with a clear expression of distraught on your face. She returned a sympathetic glare knowing you were hurting inside. She hated it but she knew there was nothing at the moment she could do to help.
Then, the phone started vibrating again. He never calls twice. If you didn’t answer the first time then he texted you, proving that this was more important. “Y/n I don’t think it’s a good idea.” Sydney emphasized seeing you stare at the screen in desire once more. You then felt a grasp onto your left thigh causing a gasp to escape your mouth as you weren’t expecting it, being lost in your racing mind.
“Hey is everything okay?” Auston inquired seeing you in a strange state. You watched him as he studied you concerned and eventually you were overwhelmed to the point that you had to excuse yourself.
“I’ll be right back.” You said quickly as you stood up from your chair leaving Auston’s hand to fall. You grabbed your phone off the table swiping the bottom of the glass for the answer option.
“Hello?” You whispered into the bottom of the device as you walked swiftly to the bathroom. Luckily, it was a single stall allowing you to be in there by yourself.
“Why are you whispering? Are you busy?” Jack inquired. It felt as if the room was spinning. He hasn’t tried to talk to besides a “Hey how are you doing?” ever since the breakup. His voice, gosh you missed that voice so much.
“Yeah no I’m fine I was just in shock.” You responded trying to cover up the fact you were with other people. Especially Auston.
“How are you?” He added. You could hear the resistance in his voice. You dated him for two years, you knew him well. He had more to say and was trying to ease into it. However, his simple remark helped calm you down knowing he only wanted to talk.
“I’m good, what about you?” You answered trying to hide the nervousness in your voice.
“Yeah I’m good.” He replied. There was an awkward silence shared between the two of you, not knowing what else to say. You hadn’t heard each other’s voices since the breakup. Only seen texts. But you knew you had to make the phone call quick before your table became concerned by your absence.
“I hate to rush you, but I am a little busy. Was there something you wanted to say?” You inquired. You didn’t want to be harsh or rude, again there was no reason to hate him. But you knew this wasn’t good. You knew you had to move on and running away to take a phone call was only going to make you fall for him all over again.
“Yeah I’m sorry I just… I miss you a lot.” He started. You could feel your throat tighten up in sadness. That was the last thing you wanted to hear. The sincerity in his voice threatening tears to your eyes.
You heard a knock on the bathroom door figuring it was someone that needed to come in. However, Sydney’s voice followed shortly after proving she had followed you.
“Y/n come on the food should be here any minute!” She shouted. Between her yelling and the banging, it was loud enough for Jack to hear.
“Who was that?” He asked. You figured this was the perfect escape from the phone call you accidentally trapped yourself in. Knowing you needed to get out before you begged for him back.
“Sydney and I went out to eat and the food is here. I’ll talk to you later bye.” You said swiftly before hanging up the phone, not giving him a response to his statement nor allowing him enough time to say anything else.
You let out a huge sigh, a pit in your stomach growing with uncertainty. You finally became excited to be with Auston and of course Jack shows up back in the picture at the same time. You didn’t know what you wanted to do.
You walked out the door of the bathroom and Sydney stood outside with her hands crossed over her chest. She held out her hand and made a grasping motion as soon as she noticed you.
“Phone. Let me have it.” She stated. She wasn’t being crazy or over protective, she simply was trying to help you knowing that you should focus more on the friends you were with instead of your ex you knew you couldn’t work it out with. You rolled your eyes and handed her your phone figuring she was right. She then put it away in her purse that was over her shoulder.
“What did he want anyway?” She inquired as you walked back to the table. At the moment you didn’t feel like sharing his comment expressing that he missed you. You wanted more time to think about it before speaking of it.
“He just asked how I was and if I was busy. I told him you and I went out to eat and hung up the phone.” You explained casually.
“You didn’t tell him Auston was here, did you?” She continued. You shook your head no. “I wouldn’t mention him. Although I’m excited for you and Auston, Jack would have a cow if he found out.” She finished.
“Wait, how do you know about Auston and I?” You asked stopping in you tracks. You hadn’t made mention to her yet and it wasn’t as if the two of you had done anything in public to prove you were trying out a relationship.
“Please, Mitch couldn’t keep a secret even if it would save his life.” She laughed opening up the door to the room everyone was in. She had a point. Although Mitch didn’t run around telling random people, his immediate friendship circle would know anything and everything before it would even happen.
You tried to shake the thought of Jack moving to sit next to Auston once again. You sent him an apologetic glare as you sat down in your seat once again.
“Are you sure everything is okay? Do you need to leave? I don’t mind taking you home.” He whispered into your ear that way no one else would hear. The thought was sweet and caused a genuine smile to pull around your lips. Having that safe, secure feeling that Auston tends to always give you.
“Yeah. I’m good, just hungry.” You admitted nodding your head. He believed you nodding his own head before turning back to his friends to engage in their conversation once more.
“Y/n now that you and Auston are together are you coming to the season kickoff dinner?” Mitch interrupted. Of course every person at the table heard the question and now turned to watch you as you answered. You never thought about going to events with Auston. In fact, you were really trying to keep it a secret. However, the dinner doesn’t involve press and is fairly private.
“If Auston wants to take me then yeah.” You responded nonchalantly. You could see him blushing beside you clearly wanting to have asked you in a more proper form.
“Even if he didn’t want to take you I still would.” Morgan teased from beside Mitch. You and Morgan were fairly good friends as well. Not as close as you were to Aus, Matt and Mitch but the two of you often cracked jokes with each other.
“Woah now, I’m taking her. No need for that.” Auston spoke up offended by Morgan’s comment. He knew it was a joke and his own statement was semi sarcastic, but he also wanted to make a point that you were his date for sure.
“Well then I guess I’m going.” You said happily finally answering Mitch’s question. The conversation was then stopped since the waiter began bringing the food to the tables laying them out in front of everyone. You were a little nervous to attend the dinner, but you figured it would be fun. Besides Steph would be there and you were friends with a couple of the other WAGs. How bad could it be?

Part One ~ Part Two ~ Part Three ~ Part Four
Word Count: 2.3k
___________________________________
Eventually you made it back to the house and started unloading the groceries into the pantry. Auston hadn’t made any more sly remarks on the way home, only casual conversation talking about what he’s done this summer. Of course, interrupting your conversation only after ten minutes of entering the house, Mitch was onto the two of you with questions.
“So, where’d you guys go?” He started. At first you looked at him as if he has three heads. There was no way he had forgotten the phone call this quickly.
“The grocery store?” You spoke concerned, but something in the back of your head was questioning if he was teasing or not.
“Anywhere else?” Mitch continued. Yep. Definitely teasing. You scuffed and rolled your eyes knowing he was trying to catch the two of you in an act, also knowing you were now single.
“Mitch, cool it.” Auston added while putting something away in the fridge. He didn’t say it sharply, just enough to get his point across.
“Fiiiine.” Mitch dragged before grabbing a bag of the chips you had just put away and retreated back out onto the patio.
“Maybe it’s a good thing we weren’t gone for too long. I couldn’t imagine what story he would have told the whole house if we took any longer.” Auston exclaimed through a giggle while he finished putting the last grocery away.
“See I am smart.” You reassured feeling good about your last minute decision on what to tell him over the phone.
“I never said you weren’t.” Auston continued with a smirk, moving to stand right next to you. It was actually more in front of you. Your back was resting against the wall next to the pantry. His hand rested against the wall above you while his body hovered closely to your side. That same domestic glare staring into you once again. But this time you didn’t get hypnotized by it. It was too much of a risk with everyone being on the other side of the glass windows.
“I’m going to get changed for dinner tonight.” You whispered on accident. You didn’t mean to, he was just so close you were afraid to speak any louder.
Of course, it was only about 2:00pm and dinner wasn’t going to be until 7:00pm but in the moment it was all you could come up with. You quickly moved from under his arm and walked up the stairs to your bedroom and into the closet. Once arriving you sighed. You hated the fact you kept running from him. You wanted him, you really did, you were just struggling to accept the fact you did. You were trying to ignore it.
You changed into your clothes for the night anyway, then cracked open the porch door to be able to hear the sound of the waves. Luckily, since you were so close with Sydney, she scored you one of the two upstairs bedrooms that had a balcony to look over the beach while everyone else stayed downstairs. The sound was relaxing and the cold breeze that would peak through every once in a while brought a sweet aroma of fresh air.
Eventually you decided to sit out on the balcony and look over the ocean and sand. You noticed all of the boys had returned out onto the beach once again. You even noticed Auston followed as well. You sat on the wooden rocking chair enjoying the beautiful weather as they occupied themselves in a football game giving you some entertainment.
It really showed you just how competitive the boys were. Every other play someone was accusing someone of cheating. They had to restart several times and they had you in a fit of giggles almost the whole game. It was funny how easily they became bothered and how serious they took a beach football game.
You didn’t notice how tired you were and wound up drifting off into sleep and taking a small nap on the balcony. You woke up taking a deep breath while searching around you before realizing what had happened. It seemed as if everything happened so fast. Last you remembered you were laughing at the boys doing their touchdown celebrations and now the sun was half set and they were all gone. You rubbed your eyes to help awaken them before continuing to try and steady your breathing from the sleep. You stretched out your body batting your lashes several times to adjust to the light before standing up to head back inside.
Matt and Sydney had planned a fancy dinner for everyone tonight at 7pm. The clock was now at 6pm only giving you half an hour to get ready, which shouldn’t be a problem, but you definitely were cutting it close.
You walked through your room and the cold air made goosebumps rise to your skin. Your body had adjusted to the warmth of the sun and once that air conditioner hit, it felt like you walked into an ice box. You tried to shake it off walking into the bathroom to fix your hair in the mirror not knowing what kind of damage the wind had left. Luckily it wasn’t much, and you only needed a brush to fix it up.
“Y/n.” You heard followed by a knock on the door. You had left your bedroom door open from before, so it was nice that someone had the courtesy to still knock. You walked out from the bathroom and noticed Auston standing in the frame, his features showing awe once you came into sight. Your outfit for the night was flowy but chic. It was a gorgeous white beach dress with watercolor hibiscus flowers spaced around it. Your hair had a sexy windblown texture while your make up was light and naturally beautiful.
“Hey, uhm.” He stuttered eyes wide open still glued on you. Your cheeks became hot and flushed as you turned your head into your shoulder to hide your smile. Pulling yourself together before saying something.
“Yes?” You questioned trying not to laugh at the fact he was completely trapped in a daze. He shook his head and blinked his eyes a couple time pulling himself back to reality.
“Do you mind if I come in? And like, close the door?” Auston inquired still semi stuttering. Your brows pulled into a confused expression. You weren’t sure what his intentions were, but you figured it was nothing to worry about.
“Uh sure. Go for it.” You responded. His mouth pulled into a shy smirk as he closed the door behind him. Immediately you could feel the tension string up throughout the entire room and you didn’t notice how silent the room sounded until it was only the two of you.
“We need to talk.” Auston started while turning around. This time way more confident. It was almost as if he collected himself while he was closing the door.
“About what?” You returned while crossing your arms over your chest. The muscles in your face now becoming sore from tightening in confusion.
“About us. You and me.” He continued stepping closer to you. The expression on his face was hard to read. Auston was never one to express his emotions easily. He loved making sly comments but never truly opened up to anyone.
“What about us?” You asked almost in a whisper. Your stomach started doing backflips. Your skin began to heat up. Auston had already made it clear he was interested. You’ve always known he was interested, you just couldn’t believe that it was finally, actually happening. It wasn’t what you were used to. You were used to him hiding everything because of your relationships but now that they’re both gone, he’s finally letting out everything that built up inside of him.
“I know you and Jack just broke up I get it. I know you’re still sad and upset. I know you’re a little lost right now because of it but please… let me in.” He spoke frantically clearly wanting the conversation to already be over with. Again, he hates expressing emotions.
“Auston I know but…” you began. The thought of Jack flooding back to your mind which you were trying to avoid. You missed him without a doubt. It wasn’t like there was an argument or an affair to fall back on to convince yourself you were over him. You both ended on such a good note, he was just gone too often. That was the hard part. There was no reason to hate him or get over him. He was simply too far away. There was also that small glimpse of hope in the back of your mind that maybe one day it would work out and you could get back together with him.
“But what? What’s stopping you? I know feel the same way about me y/n. I see it, I can feel it.” He added. His tone was soft. He wasn’t pushing, he was just desperately trying to get you to explain to him what you were feeling.
“I can’t do that to Jack, Auston. What if we get back together one day? He knows you and I had feelings for each other. Imagine if he saw I turned around and started dating you two weeks later?” You explained. You didn’t want to bring him into the conversation, but you felt if you didn’t then Auston wouldn’t understand.
“We can keep it a secret. We don’t have to let anyone know. Please y/n I just want you to officially be mine.” He said, taking another step closer to you making him only about an inch away from your body.
“It doesn’t feel right.” You accidentally whispered to the point you didn’t believe yourself. You wanted him more than you could explain. You wanted this to work. You wanted to push him back onto the bed and jump on his lap in this moment but for some reason the fear of Jack finding out held you back.
“Y/n, let me treat you right. You deserve every bit of happiness you could possibly get, and I hate seeing you this way. Let me fix it.” He continued moving closer to you again. His hand wrapped around your back and pulled your body into his. You couldn’t look up at him and make eye contact. You knew you would cave if you did. You didn’t need to see him to know the pure desire sparkling in his eyes at the moment.
“Auston.” You whispered again. It was the only thing you could say. It was almost as if your subconscious was begging him to keep going, which he did. His free hand slipped under your chin lifting it to look up at him. You caught a glimpse of his puppy eyes staring deep into you clearly asking for permission to continue. You looked down at his lips that were hungry for you and couldn’t resist. You pushed your chin up to connect his lips with yours as your eyes fluttered shut.
It felt as if a duster had tickled the inside of your body once your lips connected. You felt the breath from his nose fan over your cheeks as his soft lips suctioned onto yours. One of your hands trailed up to the back of his neck pulling him in closer to you. Your mouths simultaneously opened allowing his tongue to slip between your lips to play. Both of his arms wrapped tightly around your waist pulling you as close to his body as possible.
The sound of your lips smacking together filled the room as the kiss became more frantic. You had wanted this forever. It was almost as if years of desire were peeling off your insides like wallpaper. The hairs on your skin were standing straight up as all the need and want for him poured out of your mouth and into his. You forgot about every worry in the world. It was only the two of you.
As the kiss continued it only proved how bad you wanted him. You never wanted to disconnect from him in this moment. You felt safe. You felt like you were at home. Years and years of waiting for this and you were not disappointed.
Slowly he backed off the kiss and you felt dizzy coming down from your high. The two of you looked deep into each other’s eyes and traded relieved glares, both of you finally destroying the tension. His bottom lip glistened from the friction of your tongue on it previously as it pulled into a smirk staring down at you.
You heard a loud knock on the door causing the both of you to jump. It was clearly a pounding of someone’s fist. You looked at the clock by your bedside and noticed you guys were supposed to leave for dinner in five minutes.
“If you guys are done making out in there it’s time to go!” You heard Mitch tease from the other side of the door. Distant giggles could be heard clearly from his friends surrounding him. Mitch didn’t need to hear or see a thing to know what was going on and there was no way of hiding it. He knew the two of you too well and it didn’t take a rocket scientist to know what would happen when you were both single in a room alone together.
The two of you shrugged it off and laughed on your own, mocking Mitch once leaving the room. A couple of the boys gave you an impressed glance of their own once seeing how beautifully you were dressed causing your cheeks to heat up, flattered. Finally, everyone got together and you headed out of the house and to the restaurant for dinner.

You sat in the passenger seat of his car gazing out the window at all of the different beach houses on the strip, spotting the waves in between each home. Matt and Sydney’s house sat only a mile from the end of the island, leaving all the restaurants and entertainment about five miles down the strip, and with all of the stop lights on the island, it would take you about fifteen minutes before arriving anywhere.
“These houses are something else aren’t they.” Auston mentioned, sitting up farther in his seat to get a better view through the windshield.
“Says the millionaire professional hockey player as if you’ve never seen houses like this before.” You teased turning to look towards him. He rolled his eyes knowing he couldn’t argue with you on that one.
“I like how they’re all customized. How people put their home state flags up. Some different countries flags go up. Some people name their houses. It brings character, I like it.” He explained. He had a point. Matt & Sydney’s house had three flags. New York’s, Canada’s and America’s to represent where they were from. Although they didn’t name the house, Auston proved a point saying there was a lot of character brought to the neighborhood.
In fact, his statement shocked you. It showed how he pays attention to where he goes. He may have flown and lived in several different places around the globe, but he never takes it for granted. His words replayed in your mind as you now watched the houses through his perspective. The different colors, names, flags, they all told a story.
“I wish I could customize my own.” You admitted softly. You spoke into the window and honestly didn’t think it was even loud enough for Auston to hear, yet he did.
“I believe one day you can.” Auston added nudging your arm with his elbow. You chuckled at his comment, these houses ran in the millions. You believed it was almost impossible.
“You have too much belief in me.” You joked with a scuff. You faced his body once again that was focused on the road, his profile pulling into a confused glare.
“What? Why do you say that?” He said as if he was offended but the comment even though it wasn’t about him, cocking an eyebrow.
“I could never afford one of these houses.” You explained mimicking his expression.
“Y/n are you serious? Good things happen to good people I promise. Yeah you might not be able to afford it right this moment but you’re a really successful person. I’ve seen your potential.” He confessed changing his sight between you and the road. You couldn’t help but stare at him in a daze, trying to intake his words. He’d never really spoken to you that way. He’s always supported you, but never went out of his way to explain why.
You didn’t know how to respond. You started looking down at your hands fiddling with them not knowing what else to do. The tension was building up through the car as he awaited a response, but he eventually caught on that he wasn’t going to get one.
“You need to give yourself more credit y/n. Don’t let people make you feel any less than what you are. I know you’ve been off lately and not feeling yourself, but just know that I’ll always be here to support you no matter what.” He continued while stopping at a red light. You could feel his stare running through you like lasers. Once finally looking towards him you could see the sincerity in his eyes. He meant every word he said. You smiled at him and nodded acknowledging that you appreciate him.
His mouth pulled into a smirk seeing that he’s caught you speechless. You were pulled into a trance glued onto his eyes as the two of you sat in silence. His sight started switching between your eyes and your lips as he slowly leaned over the center console. You mimicked his movements as your mind raced a mile a minute.
You wanted him. There was no doubt about it, but you weren’t sure if this was the right time or not. You haven’t even forgotten your last relationship no longer having to jump into a new one. However, you also didn’t want to miss out on this opportunity of finally having the boy you’ve always wanted.
A loud vibration came from your phone in the cup holder. The two of you held eye contact for another moment before you looked down to see who was calling. You noticed the light you were stuck at had turned green but Auston was still stuck in his daze.
“The lights green.” You whispered, pointing awkwardly out of the windshield trying to pull him back to reality. You picked up your phone and saw Mitch’s name across the screen. As you swiped your finger across the screen to answer you felt the car move forward once again. Hearing a slight grumble escape from Auston’s mouth.
“What’s up?” You questioned to Mitch through the phone. You’d hate to admit it, but you were slightly upset. You were glad this gave you more time to think about taking the next step with Auston, but now you’ve realized you’re probably a little bit more interested in him than you thought.
“Where did you guys go?” Mitch asked. Due to the sound of his lips smacking you figured he had gone inside to grab a snack seeing neither you or Auston were still in the house.
“Uhhh” you paused turning towards Auston. You had no idea where he was taking you and you didn’t exactly want Mitch knowing that the two of you were running off somewhere secret just yet.
“We’re uhh we went to go to the grocery store.” You finally managed to get out. Auston immediately sent you a confused glare wondering what Mitch was questioning.
“We have a ton of food in the house?” Mitch continued clearly skeptic.
“Yeah maybe for the girls but not enough to feed us, plus six giant hockey players.” You argued and luckily you had a valid point. Matt and Syd didn’t go grocery shopping before everyone came over so the only food in the house is what they normally keep supplied.
“Good point.” Mitch spoke in between chews, clearly having food in his mouth. “Just make sure you guys don’t have too much fun.” He teased before hanging up the phone, not allowing you to respond. He knew you would quickly retaliate from his accusation, so he pressed the end button before you could speak another word.
You rolled your eyes clicking your phone screen off then placed it in your lap. You rested your head back onto the seat now knowing if you didn’t come back with loads of groceries, Mitch would be on to the two of you. Which you didn't want since you weren’t even sure what was going on.
“The grocery store?” Auston questioned clearly trying to hold back a laugh, thinking this whole situation was funny.
“It was the first innocent thing that came to mind.” You argued knowing that it was a better response than he could ever come up with.
“Yeah but now we have to go grocery shopping otherwise he’s going to tell the whole world how we hooked up in a parking lot or something.” He stated sitting up farther in his seat to now try and find a store the two of you could stop at.
“I’m very aware. Where were you taking me anyway?” You asked. Clearly the plans had been ruined but luckily you didn’t know where they were going to be in the first place.
“Can I be honest?” He started, you nodded your head yes in response. “I didn’t really have a plan. I was just going to wait for something to come up. So, I really hope you like shopping for milk and bread.” He teased with a smile plastered across his face from his own joke. You giggled and shook your head. It was a weird situation but at least the tension from the interrupted kiss was gone.. well so you thought.
“As long as I am with you I don’t really care though.” Auston barely whispered under his breath. You knew you weren’t supposed to hear it. At first you almost asked him to repeat it, but then figured it should be dropped. Besides, you didn’t want to think too far into it anyway.
Eventually Auston found a store a couple more miles down the road and pulled into the parking lot. This part of the jersey shore was your favorite. There were no commercial companies. It was all local family run businesses and it really made the area special. The grocery store had a gorgeous mural painted on the side of a farm with all different kinds of crops. You couldn’t help but stare at it for a while before following Auston who was watching you amusedly, halfway through the door already.
You jogged to catch up with him and was immediately hit by the cold air from the produce section that was off to the right. You grabbed a cart and followed Auston who you believed was pretending as if he knew what he was doing. It was your idea to go grocery shopping in the first place and it wasn’t like either of you knew the layout of this store, but he seemed to know exactly what aisle he wanted to go down.
He turned down the bread aisle picking up hamburger and hot dog buns, tossing them into the cart as if he was playing basketball. Obviously, you flinched a time or two not knowing how accurate his shot would be which caused him to laugh, so of course now he was going to do it the entire time you shopped.
He did it with the meats as well but this time you’ve stopped flinching now knowing he wasn’t going to hit you. You picked up a different variety of snacks as you followed him down each aisle and the cart was shockingly becoming quite full. Yet, the whole experience was becoming boring. You guys didn’t talk much besides “Hey do you think this would be good?” Followed by a yes or no answer. But the whole point of it was to get your mind off things and it seemed to have been working.
Auston picked up a carton of eggs and made the motion as if he was going to toss them into the cart with the other items. This caused you to have a borderline heart attack thinking he was actually going to do it, foreseeing the yolky mess he could have possibly caused.
“Auston I’m literally going to kill you.” You stated wide eyed holding your hand over your chest as you caught your breath. He couldn’t help but lean over the cart laughing hysterically at your reaction.
“Oh, shut up.” You teased slapping him lightly on the shoulder with the back of your hand. He stood up eyes still squinting from laughing as he held his arms out to you.
“Oh, come on you love me.” He accused wrapping his arms tightly around you, rocking your bodies back and forth. Of course, he was wearing your favorite cologne why wouldn’t he be? The scent filled your senses as you leaned your head into his chest and enjoyed the embrace.
Once his laughter had turned into only a smiling you looked up at him and shook your head not enjoying being startled, no matter how funny it was. His smile was contagious, causing you to smirk as well. Then, a domestic feature washed over his grin and his eyes looked as if they were studying you in a very loving way. You couldn’t help but feel the blood in your stomach begin to rush feeling as if a flower had just bloomed inside you.
“Come on. Let’s go back home.” Auston spoke, but it was in a soft seductive tone. Man, he was terrible at hiding his emotions. He slowly released his arms from around you and took the cart pushing it to the front to check out.
The way he looked at you moments ago was practically implanted into your mind. Every time he looked back at you to make sure you were following it reminded you of that soft glaze that had covered his eyes. You might not have been ready to move from your old relationship at the moment, but he was making it quite hard to resist. You knew it was about to be a long night.

Part One ~ Part Two ~ Part Three ~ Part Four

Fic Type: Series
__________________________________________
You decided not to go out to the beach with everyone else. You weren’t in the mood. It was only two weeks ago you broke up with your boyfriend of two years. The worst part was, you didn’t break up because he cheated, or you got into an argument or anything like that. It was simply because he had moved out to Europe, which you weren’t able to do, and the long distance became intolerable. You tried your hardest to keep the relationship going but couldn’t. You only ended up hurting each other more.
Your best friend Sydney invited you out to her and Matt’s beach house out on the Jersey Shore. You figured it would be the perfect way to get your mind off of things. Besides, you were friends with Matt and all his old Toronto teammates as well, they decided to have one last get together before Matt runs off to New York, so it was a flawless recipe to happiness. The house could fit twelve which promised plenty of distractions from the argument going on in your mind anyway.
However, today the break up was really bothering you. You arrived at their house midafternoon yesterday. Everyone else was planning on arriving the next day so you were able to spend some time alone with Matt and Sydney that night. As wonderful as it was to hang out with your friends alone once more, it reminded you of your past relationship. No matter how much you tried to push it away, you envied the simple things like how they would look at each other or even the caring questions he would ask. You missed being cared for and you were hoping a good night's rest would fix it, but it didn’t.
Everyone else arrived early this morning. Not being able to hold in their excitement, before even unpacking, they all decided to take a quick run to the beach. You opted out due to feeling unwell, deciding to settle in the kitchen. You grabbed a drink from the fridge, resting your forearms on the marble topped island as you watched the waves accompanied by your group of friends busying themselves with either football, tanning, or boogie boarding.
You rested your head into your hand as you continued to watch. A light breeze cooled off the air in the house through the screen door and you closed your eyes with the peaceful sound of the water crashing, allowing the wind to gently blow your hair off your face. You took deep breaths to relax your body and intake the sweet salty aroma. It had been a while since the last time you were at the beach. It was your favorite place to go with your ex, so you tended not to go without him, but you were hoping this trip would change that mindset. However, you couldn’t seem to stop the memories replaying in your head of how much fun the two of you used to have. Almost as if a movie was playing in your mind.
“Is everything okay?” You heard a male voice from beside you. Your head fell off your hand and a loud gasp escaped your mouth. Your heart beat felt like it could be seen out of your chest and if it wasn’t for your arm resting on the marble, you probably would have fell over. At first you believed it was an intruder due to the fact everyone had left for the beach. However, you were theory was proven incorrect when you saw Matt’s ex teammate Auston grabbing a drink from the fridge behind you.
“Sorry I didn’t mean to scare you.” He said while trying to hide his giggle. He even left his head facing the inside of the fridge a little longer that way you wouldn’t see the giant amused smirk across his face.
You and Auston knew each other very well due to Syd and Matt. You were from NYC which is how you originally met them, but before Matt was even traded you took up your dream job in Toronto. Once he got traded it was effectively the best day of your life since they were both your best friends.
Auston and Mitch were the first two teammates Matt had introduced you to since they were practically inseparable. You and Auston hit it off immediately. It wasn’t even that you had a lot in common, your personalities just clicked. You became really close friends but due to your boyfriend, you've always kept some distance from Auston since he was very attractive, and you knew he thought the same of you. Everyone said the two of you had a thing for each other, but at the time Auston was with someone as well. So, you mutually decided to only to hang around friends and talk to each other sparsely in respect for your significant others.
There was no denying that there was a spark between you two that you had always ignored, but you figured it would never work out. Even now. Rumor has it Auston left his girl a couple months ago, and even though you’re single as well, you knew it would still take a while to rid your mind of your own ex. Besides, his lifestyle may not be ideal for your liking either. Considering your recent breakup was due to distance, this wouldn’t be much different.
“Other than the heart attack, yes, everything is fine.” You responded holding your hand to your chest. Auston turned around from the fridge, a huge smile still evident on his face revealing his flawless pearly whites. He still had some stubble growing around his mouth and his hair was wet, lying lazily over forehead. You bit your bottom lip in hopes of stopping the possible drool about to escape your mouth from his appearance as his newest addition to his tattoo sleeve peaked out from his T-shirt. God, you were such a sucker for tattoos.
“Somethings wrong why are you crying?” He questioned. You hadn’t noticed it but two tears had escaped your eyes while lost in a trance about you past relationship earlier. You didn’t want Auston to know that was the reasoning, so you quickly had to come up with an excuse.
“Probably because you just scared the hell out of me.” You teased. As you spoke you noticed your voice sounded slightly nasally due to congestion from crying. Before Auston responded he lifted his hand to rest on the side of your cheek. As a reaction you turned towards his body that was adjacent from yours now. He watched you cautiously as he wiped away the tears with his thumb. His eyes studied you carefully as you watched his sympathetic features above you.
“Who hurt you?” He asked, the muscles in his face tightening as he tries to solve his own question in his mind. His hand continued to rest on your cheek and you tried your hardest not to lean into him for comfort. His hand was so warm, and it sat perfectly on your cheek like a pillow. You wanted to give into him. Forget everything about your ex and finally move forth with Auston but it was too soon, and you were aware of that.
“No one Auston. Seriously, I’m fine.” You reassured. Moving your head away from his palm, turning to face out the window once again. Knowing that if you stayed there any longer, you would fall for his touch.
“Listen I may not be a fighter, but I’ll still beat someone’s ass for you.” He admitted. You couldn’t help but let out a breathy chuckle from not only the accusation, but also the thought of it. However, your giggle released another tear onto your cheek followed by a sniffle. You were in such a tough situation. The boy you’ve known and loved for years is now thousands of miles away, and the one who seemed to be your true pairing was standing right in front of you with arms wide open, but you couldn’t get your distractions out of the way. There was no way of hiding it now as you watched Auston stare at you concerned. You knew that it was time to face the truth. Maybe telling someone would help ease the pain.
“Jack and I broke up.” You whispered staring at the counter in front of you. Your lips folded into your mouth as you attempted to prevent a frown. Hoping it’ll keep more water works away from falling. Your hands were resting on the ledge of the island and Auston mimicked your moves adjacent from you.
“Why?” He asked sympathetically. You couldn’t pull yourself to look at him in his face, so you decided to only watch his hands.
“Distance.” Was your short response. You didn’t need to explain. Auston wasn’t foreign to your relationship. He knew the distance was always an issue between the two of you. Hell, you may have told him almost every issue your relationship had. But he also understood how much he meant to you.
“I’m sorry.” He apologized. As if he had anything to apologize over. But you knew he was trying to be nice and supportive.
“No need to be sorry. Let’s just hope it was for the better.” You responded in attempts to stay optimistic. Finally looking him in his eyes and flashing a sincere smile. Yet he watched you with a poker face. You couldn’t tell if it was sympathetic, happy, sad, mad. His emotions were lost as if he was in deep thought over something.
“What are you doing in the house anyway? I thought you went out with everyone.” You questioned in hopes of breaking the awkward silence but also wanting to know why he decided to stay back. His eyes blinked before responding, proving he was daydreaming.
“I wanted to unpack first knowing I wouldn’t have if I went down there. I was about to head out but then I saw you.” He explained. He bent over the marble resting on his elbow facing you as his head leaned onto his hand indicating he wasn’t leaving until you did.
“Well don’t let me and my sobby attitude stop you.” You admitted lifting your hand to signal out towards your friends on the beach. He gazed out the window for a couple seconds watching them as he pondered what decision he was going to make.
“Come on.” He suggested standing up straight. He turned half his body towards the stairs that led to the exit while holding his hand out for you to take.
“No Aus, it’s fine really. I’m not much of a beach person anyway I just came to hang out with everyone.” You explained shaking your head back in forth to deny him. He was always one to include you in things. He thought everything was more fun with you around but at the moment you really wanted to be alone. Especially since confessing your break up didn’t exactly make you feel better.
“Who said we were going to the beach?” He inquired, opening and closing his palm to emphasize he wanted you to take it. Your head tilted in confusion.
“Didn’t you just say you were about to go out onto the beach until you saw me?” You inquired. Your sight was flicking between his hand and his face that was watching you enthusiastically. He had a plan. You didn’t know what it was, but you knew that expression he was giving.
“I changed my mind. I know somewhere better.” He said widening his eyes attempting to intrigue you. You wanted to. You wanted to so bad. You didn’t even know what was holding you back at this point. You’ve always wanted to get alone with him and now was your time.
“I can see you’re thinking about it too much. Just trust me. Please.” Auston spoke softly. He was right. You had no reason not to trust him either. You wanted a distraction, and this was the perfect one, so you finally pulled yourself together and placed your hand in his.
His face lit up in a large smile. He pulled your hand down to his side and intertwined your fingers to hold hands as he guided you out of the house. You weren’t expecting it, but you’d be lying if you said you didn’t like it. He pulled you quickly, clearly impatient about what he had in store and you couldn’t wait to find out.
