i don’t really want to go on and on on twItter about the am* n*min drag performance issue because it’s already saturated with think pieces left and right + i’m lacking of sleep right now to have a full discussion with people so i’ll just share my thoughts (context can be found on tw*tter)

a lot of devout c*tholics, i think, don’t understand that lgbtq+ folks aren’t outraged about how people may find the drag performance to be extremely offensive and blasphemous—they’re outraged about the conditional allyship and tolerance towards the lgbtq+ community. no one is (or very few are) saying you shouldn’t be offended.

if you feel offended, insulted, and angry over the drag performance, you are valid to have these feelings and you can’t exactly have an off switch for the emotions that have risen from seeing someone you hold in high regard being “mocked”. you are allowed to feel offended. 

it’s not homophobic to have those feelings. what’s homophobic is that in response to the drag performance, you say: “kaya walang rumerespeto sa inyo eh (that’s why nobody respects you [lgbtq+ community])”, “gusto niyo ng respeto eh wala namang kayong respeto sa amin (you want respect but don’t respect us)”, “i retract my support for the lgbtq+ community”, and just all sorts of hate and anger that were, to me, excessive and disproportionate to the "crime" committed. some even went as far as to suggest that the drag performer in the video receive the death penalty or that because of this (nice separation of church and state there btw /s), the SOGIE bill shouldn't be passed.

when i first read the outrage on tw*tter, i thought someone did something akin to burning the image of Chr*st. all i saw was someone performing a rock remix of am* n*min while cosplaying J*sus. that's it. i find it so ??? that this one incident, this one short clip made people go "oh!! so now you don't deserve rights because you'll just abuse it." as if you aren't the same people to share j*sus memes and tiktoks with remixes of other r*ligious songs, wear tattoos, eat pork, go to ch*rch on sunday, etc. i don't know, i guess it's better to throw stones at others than to look at yourselves in the mirror.

#again you are ALLOWED to be offended #it doesn't mean that lgbtq+ folks should be denied the right to EXIST and that going beyond EXISTING is “too much” #also don't get me started on how you guys insinuate that m*slims are violent by saying “you wouldn't do this with a *slamic figure” #as if you aren't the same people who would make allahu akbar jokes and bomb jokes #please

just thinking about kurapika again and how tragic his whole life is. like, when i was 12, i didn’t really realize how traumatizing it was for kurapika to lose everything. i’m 21 now and i think i can grasp a little bit of his pain.

if you think about it, he didn’t just lose his home and his family and his clan and their scarlet eyes. he lost his language, his culture, their food, their traditional wear, their customs—everything. it’s like an ancient library burnt to the ground and the only one left to keep the knowledge of the kurta clan is kurapika and him alone. never again will he find another kurta who could cook the meals he grew up with. never again will he find another kurta elder who would teach him the stories of his ancestors. never again will he find another kurta he could speak his mother tongue.

so i'm taking a linguistics course this semester and we're currently reading about dead languages, and i'm equal parts furious and devastated bc i've realized that the kurta language is technically a dead language now. because even though kurapika still knows and speaks it, he's the only native speaker left - which means even if he were to teach it to someone else or have kids and teach it to them, it wouldn't really change its status, because they aren't technically native speakers who grew up in the kurta clan and learned it as their first language. for a language to be considered a living language, there essentially has to be a community that naturally speaks it as one of its official languages, and it would ideally continue to be passed down and undergo normal changes over time and be used organically and primarily by the community. so since that's never going to be possible again (unless kurapika somehow managed to repopulate/reinstate the kurta clan, which would be a large feat as the only remaining kurta), the language is, by linguistic definition, considered dead. so not only did chr*llo kill kurapika's entire clan and family, he literally killed their language, too.
