More Traveling with Murtagh Headcanons (staying at an inn together edition)
Please be aware that I haven't read Murtagh's book yet (haven't been able to afford it), so no spoilers please! Enjoy!
Bad weather forces you and Murtagh to abandon your camp on the ground and make for the nearby town with an inn for the night – and neither of you can deny warm food, drink, and a roof over your heads sounds lovely.
Of course, he’s an absolute gentlemen as you two scurry through town, holding tight to your hand so as to not lose you in the crowd and make sure you don’t slip in the mud. He grabs your hand instinctually and seems a bit embarrassed when he realizes. He’s halfway through an apology when you only cling tighter to him as he tries to pull away, and you didn’t realize anyone could be that red aside from Thorn.
If you don’t have a good cloak to keep you dry (or even a cloak at all), he insists you take his, even though he’s getting drenched. At best, you could convince him to hold his cloak over both of you like an umbrella (do those even exist in Alagaësia? Who knows but suspend the disbelief here) until you get to the inn’s door.
No matter how safe the inn looks inside or how demure the patrons, Murtagh still sticks to you like glue, just in case (especially if you’re fem or a bit on the physically smaller side) to keep away “unsavory characters,” keeping a gentle hand on the small of your back or your shoulder the whole time to the point that you two keep getting mistaken for a couple and eventually give up trying to stammer out an explanation.
He keeps acting like he’s avoiding your gaze, but you keep catching his stare.
If the two of you are separated or you finally convince him you can look after yourself, lord help anyone that tries to flirt with you. If you asked for space, he’ll honor your request, but is glaring a hole into the back of the other person’s head.
If this person is giving you trouble, he materializes by your side and puts himself between you and the perpetrator, telling them to back off. If they still refuse, he puts a hand on the pommel of his sword as Thorn growls low, but clear in the distance enough to make the whole room rattle before the innkeeper steps in.
Yes, this is the tropiest of tropes, but I don’t care Lo and behold, of course there’s a limited number of rooms available that all only have one bed. Murtagh of course, being the gentleman he is, immediately offers to take the floor with the bedroll he snagged downstairs – even if he’s sick or injured. Depending on where the two of you are in your friendship, you either can’t convince him to take the bed with you at all or he begrudgingly agrees.
Cue the “I mean, but if you’d rather the floor, I don’t want to force you – ” “no, that’s all right, we can…um…,” “I mean, you can have the bed and I can take the floor if you want – ” “No, we’ll both just…this is fine.”
If he refuses to share and you get stubborn enough to climb into his bedroll while he’s in the washroom, he’ll come out with a sigh and simply carry you back to the bed.
If he does share the bed with you, he’s very stiff and tense while he lays with his back to you and refuses to budge.
Of course, he insists on taking the side facing the door.
If you wake up in the middle of the night, you can catch him spooning you and snuggle into him a bit more before falling back to sleep. On the flip side, if you snuggle into him, he’ll sleepily relax and lean against you with a small, contented sigh.
When it’s time to leave in the morning, he of course lets you sleep in while he quietly gets your packs ready and gets some breakfast from downstairs, even bringing it to you in bed after gently shaking you awake. You wake up with your hair suspiciously tidy and can’t help but wonder if he was playing with it before he woke you.
When Thorn confirms this later in the day via teasing comment that you happen to overhear, Murtagh of course, is not amused.

I know multiple people in the fandom have talked about how murtagh gives them violin vibes, but imagine Murtagh realizing how good you are at the violin (or any instrument, or even singing) and he’s just all 🤯 😍 🤤

Ok but putting a cloak on someone is so personal. The other person has to wrap it around you in almost a hug-like position, then readjust it on your shoulders so it sits right, then get in close to clasp it around your neck, and just imagining Murtagh wrapping his cloak around you UGH

I was wondering, you said you'd be down to DM about Murtagh - would you also be down to DM about Inheritance Cycle OC's? (One of them is actually entangled with our boy!) Need to yell about them somewhere so this is worth a try :]
Of course! I have an inheritance OC too, who may never see the light of day at this rate lol, but I love talking anything related to OCs and fanfic!

One thing that alway drives me crazy about Angela's prophecy and Eragon angsting about "leaving Alagaesia forever" is that there's NO time frame Angela gave him.
Like yeah maybe you'll leave forever one day. But who said anything about WHEN? You're a fucking RIDER, you can live FOREVER.
This "leaving forever" thing can happen in a hundred years. Five hundred years, hell a THOUSAND years!
Kiddo, chill and go visit your cousin. He misses you.

What is fascinating about Murtagh's use of magic, beyond his obvious lack of education compared to Eragon, is how much he relies on intent to direct his spells.
During his studies under Oromis, Eragon learnt to always use precise wording to get the results he wants. And due to his prior unintentional cursing of Elva, this is sth he remains very conscious of through for the rest of the series. It, of course, helps that he is basically fluent in the Ancient Language after his stay in Ellesmera.
But Murtagh knows only a handful of words (at least before he finds the dictionary), so throughout most of the book, he mainly uses short simple phrases and sometimes straight-up single word spells. And outside a couple of times in which other magic users' wards interfere with his spells, they turn out to be surprisingly reliable despite being incredibly vague.
While Murtagh is obviously behind Eragon in terms of magic, I think it is fascinating to see how much use he is able to get out his very limited knowledge of magic theory and the Ancient Language through his own creativity.
In a way, his lack of a formal education in magic really allows him to try new things (which is not always good due to the obvious danger of magic experiments ).
It also makes me think back to Brom starting to teach magic to Eragon. He explains that a true master would be able to create a gemstone just with the use of the singular word "water".

Eragon and Saphira summed up. And it becomes even better when she tells Thorn about it and he starts doing the same thing to Murtagh (Firnen isn’t brave enough and everyone understands).
the thing that bothers me about dragon riders is that the dragon absolutely does not have to let you climb on its back. your ability to 'ride' the dragon is entirely dependent on the dragon allowing you to do that. it could fly just fine without you sitting there. which means you are not a dragon rider, not really. that beast is not your pet. you're the dragon's pet. you're its trophy wife.

I think he has one in the fork? I haven’t read it in awhile, so not 100% sure. I actually took screencaps of Garrett Hedlund (Murtagh’s actor in the nonexistent movie) from another movie where he had a beard, and used a photo editing app to make his hair dark specifically so I could see the fork vibes 😅
Tumblr media
I couldn’t really figure out how to color his beard without making it look super janky, but if anyone else knows how and wants to reblog with it, feel free!
Feeling very brain empty, but in the mood to talk about Murtagh, so feel free to send in your thoughts!

Yeeessss I love it. I think he’d be wary at first, but confident he could get himself out of the situation if need be and lowkey enjoys the excuse to spar with someone who probably will be less inclined to play fair so he can sharpen his skills. I feel like he’d actually be more likely to flirt/flirt back if they beat him in the duel (cuz I headcanon both he and Eragon have a thing for someone who can hand their ass to them).

Murtagh = good boy who deserves a fucking break.
YES. Like please someone just give him a secluded little house on Eragon's Rider Academy where he's welcome to either come out and help teach or allowed to just enjoy some solitude and self-care time with Thorn.
Like can you picture a little cottage backed by woods in a clearing. Thorn's just sunbathing and there's smoke coming out the chimney while Murtagh reads a book by the fire or cooks something (I headcanon that he actually loves cooking and is really good at it, especially on the road). Maybe he's adopted a stray cat that lives in the woods.
And if it's a reader insert/OC situation, he insists Thorn tells him once you get close and runs out the front door to hug you, pick you up, and spin you around cuz he's so happy to see you.

In response to your request for Murtagh thoughts:
I have an Inheritance OC named Rionach who has a strong platonic bond with Murtagh, to the point they call each other siblings. When Rionach’s dragon Ophelia hatches, some months after Thorn, that familial titling extends to the dragons. For example, if Murtagh is talking to Thorn and says “my sister,” he means Rionach, but if he says “our sisters,” he means both Rionach and Ophelia.
I love this anon. I know he's got Eragon as a blood relative, but I feel like chosen family would still mean so much to him because it's someone who's not obligated to choose him choosing him anyway (same for Thorn).
