Now that I’m leaving HK there’s things I will miss, but they don’t outweigh the need to leave. I’m moving forward in a positive direction using my past experience, (in my personal perspective) it’s what life is all about. Beetles are intrinsically linked to japan. From 100+ year old samurai armour designs to modern day summer holiday kids projects, they are part of Japan’s society and appreciation of nature. My personal favorite insect is the hotaru, firefly 🥰 I’ve only ever seen the larvae in Japan (that also glow!) and 2 lone fireflies in HongKong, unfortunately these bioluminescent insects are threatened as they require quite pristine and precise environmental conditions, those conditions are becoming rare. Some Japanese wind chimes 🎐 Located in Nikko’s world heritage site filled with historical and stunning shrines and temples submerged in a pristine forest 🌳. A furin is a small Japanese wind chime, which is traditionally hung from the eaves of a house during the summer. It has the shape of a bell with the clapper in the center of the chime. A strip of paper, called the tanzaku, hangs from the clapper. When the wind blows, the tanzaku causes the clapper to strike the sides of the chime, thus making the furin toll. I have always been interested in the lanterns outside of Japanese restaurants, I just found out what they are! Chochin (lanterns) serve a purpose: to acknowledge businesses that have contributed money to a local matsuri (festival). Unless only one company has chipped in — unthinkable in festival-crazy Japan — you are guaranteed to see a wild array of characters. Like everything else in Japan, chochin follow protocol. Sensō-ji is an ancient Buddhist temple located in Asakusa, Tokyo, Japan. It’s Tokyo's oldest temple, and one of its most significant. This shot is actually of one of the gates (tori ⛩) directly in front of the actual temple’s main body. I seriously cannot overstate how stunning Nikko is. Clean air, fresh local food and stunning environment, I left feeling refreshed and wishing I could of stayed longer. The pictures in my profile of Nikko are actually taken in the off season, normally the weather is rather bad, I can hardly think of this area looking anything other than stunning. These huge sake casks are called “kazaridaru” - decorative barrels. They can be found across japan 🇯🇵 in Shinto shrines ⛩, they are normally hollow and for decorative purposes. Sake is deeply rooted in ⛩ Shintoism in Japan (similar to the wine in Christianity) as it supposedly allowed people to become closer to their gods. This connection has proliferated over the 100’s of years and even today it’s considered an important part of the culture/religion. There’s even a special council (called shuzokeishinkai) that’s main purpose is to make sure that all the appropriate shrines in japan have the correct sake containers and quantities of ceremonial alcohol. But from slightly different angles, as I was walking slowly taking is such a splendid sight. ⛩This is a beautiful toad in Nikkō Tōshō-gū, a Tōshō-gū Shinto shrine located in Nikkō, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. Together with Futarasan Shrine and Rinnō-ji, it forms the Shrines and Temples of Nikkō UNESCO World Heritage Site, with 42 structures of the shrine included in the nomination. Five of them are designated as National Treasures of Japan, and three more as Important Cultural Properties. ⛩ And this beautiful toad was grabbing the same attention in it’s little hole at the side of the stairs going up to an kings tomb. A Stunning amphibian! There was even a small group of people gathering around it taking pictures, myself included. 🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸 I believe this toad to be a Japanese common toad or Japanese toad (Bufo japonicus) is a species of toad in the family Bufonidae. It is endemic to Japan. A flag bearer in Asakusa area of Tokyo. There was an Okinawan dance/parade in a part of the main road. The Okinawan eisa dance was being played, it has a lovely beat and in Okinawa everyone is encouraged to join in when it starts dance. Even this man was singing along with a few moves holding this seemingly heavy flag. The shimenawa is a special rope tied around or across an object or space to denote its sanctity or purity. Tassels usually hang from the rope at intervals. Shimenawa are believed to act as a ward against evil spirits and are often set up at a ground-breaking ceremony before construction begins on a new building. They are often found at Shinto shrines, torii gates, and sacred landmarks. They are also used around yorishiro (objects capable of attracting spirits, hence inhabited by spirits). These notably include certain trees, in which case the inhabiting spirits are called kodama, and cutting down these trees is thought to bring misfortune. 🌲🌲🌲⛰🌲🌲🌲⛰🌲🌲🌲⛰🌲🌲🌲 I’m not sure what it is about this tree that makes me feel calm, is it the moss, the seemingly large silentness of the tree or something else? The harvestman spider 🕷 A little bit of a surprising customer when you’re not expecting one, and I definitely wasn’t, on my leisurely stroll around some of the shinto shrines in Nikko. ⛩🌳🌲🌳🌲🕷🌳🌲🌳⛩ The ones with the red bodies (second pic) are some of the largest I’ve ever seen, easily having a individual leg over 10cm!! Complete harmless and extremely fragile, but not one of the animals I’d “handle”, appreciation for afar is my motto with these odd beasts. ⛩🌳🌲🌳🌲🕷🌳🌲🌳⛩ As a side note, I did see a large amount of insect in Nikko above their standard size compared to the manny I’ve seen in and around Asia.
