A colony of Spanish Moss
Despite the name, this plant is neither Spanish nor is it a moss. It’s natural habitat ranges from the Southeastern US all the way to Argentina, where it can enjoy a warm and humid climate. It’s been introduced to similar locations around the world, including Hawaii.
There are colonial-era reports of it being found in southern Maryland, where no populations are known to exist today.
There’s a misconception about this plant being a parasite, however it is actually an epiphyte.
It lives on the surface of other trees, but sources its water and nutrients through its own leaves from the rain & air. This plant occasionally grows to be so thick that it shades the leaves of the host tree, stunting its growth.
It can sometimes grow on artificial structures as well, like telephone lines and fencing.
Spanish Moss is sensitive to airborne contaminates, and has receded from urban areas due to high air pollution.
Spanish Moss is important to the ecosystems they’re found in, it’s a home to a variety of creatures.
Rat snakes, which help control rodent populations, can be found nesting in this plant. Three species of bats also call this plant home. One species of jumping spider is found exclusively on Spanish Moss.
Thousands of other arthropods can be found as well, making this plant the host to a vast micro biome.
It’s been used by people for various purposes; including building insulation, mattress stuffing, packing material, mulch and fiber. In the early 1900s it was commercially used in the padding of car seats, with 10,000 tons processed in 1939. Today, it’s sometimes dried and used in “evaporative coolers”, which are used to cool homes & offices at a lower cost than most air conditioners.

This is the first sight I saw when I stepped out of my motel the day after arriving in Colorado Springs in 2019.
Growing up in flat Florida, seeing a mountain range for the first time had me shook. Even more so once I got closer to it.
After driving 12 hours and 850 miles (through a tropical depression) from Jacksonville Fl to the border of Texas and Louisiana, I stopped at a truck stop and caught some rest.
The next morning, I bodied the last 14 hours / 885 miles. I lost sunlight near Amarillo in Texas, so driving through the pitch-black American Midwest was definitely an experience for someone who’s barely driven up a hill before.
I remember wondering what it all looked like, but I definitely wasn’t ready for what I saw when I woke up. Shoutout to everyone who was along for the ride, and the ones who had a room ready and a warm welcome for us when we got there.
P.S. New Mexico smells like cow poop 🐄 💩
