And even though he noticed the man’s incredibly beautiful eyes right away, he absolutely did not expect to fall in love with him as hard as he did. But as circumstances force him to come back to the only place he swore he would never return to, Castiel is finally forced to face everything he once knew and loved. After twelve years, Dean is as mesmerizing as Castiel remembers, but the scars of what was broken still run as deeply as the marrow of his bones, and Castiel will do everything he can to protect himself. As for Dean, he’s trying civilian life on for size, and it’s going well so far—he’s the top student in both of his courses at the community college. Rating: Teen & Up Word Count: 5,503 Main Tags/Warnings: Purgatory, Dream Walking, Memory Alteration, Hell Trauma, Suicidal Thoughts Summary: He’d always wondered, before: what happened to a monster that died in its own afterlife? And yet, above all else, above the symphony of death flooding his senses and the sound of his erratically human heartbeat drumming in his ears, the voice that rang clear above the din, the spark that kept him going through the thick of it all wasn’t the voice of God or any other divine revelation. It was Dean Winchester’s. Sometimes just the sound floating through the aether, the certainty that Dean was still out there fighting, praying, was the only thing that kept Castiel fighting too.

What with Sam being my brother and, and, Jack would just be weird, so…yeah.” Castiel’s face remains blank. “I think you were a bit brusque,” he says, slowly, at last. cas doesn’t quite understand the human custom of kissing. it’s a foreign concept; something that he just can’t quite grasp. what were the parameters for kissing? why were some kisses placed on foreheads and some on lips?
did kisses apply to only lovers? what about best friends? what about angels? could angels like himself share kisses?
he decided to test the theory for himself.
late at night, when dean’s head was dropping against the table from exhaustion, cas stood up, and, after a moment of hesitation, he placed a kiss to dean’s forehead.
“whaddya doing?” dean mumbled tiredly, tilting his head towards cas.
“a good night kiss,” cas confirmed, mentally checking off the list he’d made in his head of types of kisses he’d found on the internet.
dean smiled, sleepy and mellow as he murmured, “thanks cas.”
cas tried the next kiss on his list a few weeks later. dean’s shoulder had been injured during a run-in with some werewolves, and once dean had thrown a bandage onto it, cas stopped and pressed a quick kiss to the bandage.
dean quirked his eyebrow at cas. “whatcha up to, buddy?”
“healing kiss,” cas said, half statement half question as he didn’t quite believe the logic behind this type of kiss.
when dean smiled, it was tender and fond. “it worked. all healed now,” dean said as he let his fingers linger against cas’ elbow as he guided them back towards the impala.
the final kiss happened during movie night, the end credits of a romcom scrolling across the screen. the romance kiss was still playing in cas’ mind, and when he glanced over at dean, he felt the urge to attempt the last kiss on the list.
“the big kiss at the end. all the romance and the happy ending,” cas said, eyes darting towards the screen. “what does that feel like?”
dean gave him a soft expression, quirking an eyebrow as he asked, “do you want to find out?”
cas nodded. they leaned in together at the same time, and when their lips brushed in a soft kiss, cas quickly determined this was his favorite type of kiss.
that first kiss on the lips merged into a second kiss and a third, until cas truly understood the concept of kisses and the way dean’s mouth felt against his own.

They finally stumble into bed at three in the morning, uselessly shushing each other as they fumble off t-shirts and flannels, clumsily shimmying out of jeans and boxers and socks. It’s been a night of good food, friends and beer, and despite knowing the world will spin the moment he’s horizontal, Dean throws himself towards the headboard, wriggling his brows lecherously as Cas’s pants get caught on his heels. “Ha!” he crows, kicking them off indiscriminately. They land on the dresser.
“Cas!” Dean shushes him at full volume.
Half their rag-tag family sprawled across the living room, with Claire and Kaia camping out in Jack’s room in an impromptu sleepover. The kid was so excited he almost pissed himself.
Cas crawls, uncoordinated, up towards Dean and captures his mouth in a sloppy kiss. They’re both exhausted, but they’ll rally; the kid had them up at 5:30 this morning, banging around the kitchen to make Dean breakfast in bed. Despite several close calls with the stove, the house is still standing when Dean starts 43 with burnt pancakes and a smile on his face.
And now, after a kickass party, he’s gonna get fucked within an inch of his life, drunk on his birthday, like every other boring couple that does birthday sex. Cas is hot and sweet and a fuckin’ firecracker in the sack and he’s… he’s…
Asleep. He’s totally asleep.
Dean considers waking him up for about as long as it takes for him to shut his own eyes. In the haze between sleep and wakefulness, he threads their fingers together with a grin.
Fuck yeah, 43.

Xōchipilli's curse
"I checked the lore. This can be only reversed by the touch of true lo…" Sam stops still in his tracks and takes in the picture before him.
His brother lies under the sheets, still naked as he left him more than an hour ago. But he looks relaxed, with Castiel's hand on his arm, cheeks still flushed but breathing calm and eyes closed.
"Is he sleeping?" Sam asks.
"Yes," Castiel answers, still only looking at Dean. "I helped him get better. Now, he only needs to sleep the rest of it off."
***
Two hours earlier
Sam looks at the door of the motel room, trying his best not to stare at his mattress-humping brother.
"It must be a curse or something," he states.
Dean groans into his pillow. "It was a god. And he blew this gross flower stuff right into my face. It's like a very stupid pollen allergy."
Sam nods into the void. "Okay. I'll check the lore. I hope there's something about Aztec mythology that relates to this. You… you think you're gonna be good?"
"Better without my little brother in the room," Dean croaks.
"Yes… of course. I'm gonna…"
"Go, Sammy!"
Sam clears his throat. "Sure."
Dean presses his reddened face into the pillow and waits until the door clicks shut behind Sam. With a groan, he turns on his back and kicks the blanket away. His cock steers in the cold air.
Dean has seen weird shit but being unbelievably horny after sneezing his heart out is probably the strangest thing ever happening to him. He takes himself in hand, hoping to find relief, but it's only getting worse as he can't get himself off.
He doesn't understand why he got into this mess. He thought, Xōchipilli—also known as the flower prince—would be thankful for what the Winchesters had done for him. A god promising him a special thank you gift had sounded awesome, but as soon as Dean had inhaled the pollen, he had felt arousal swirling through his body. His cock filled out in a second, painful and uncontainable, even if he had all the willpower in the world.
Sam drove him back to the motel, trying his best to calm Dean down, to no avail. He needed release but that was hardly possible with his little brother in the driver's seat next to him.
Sam is gone now, but Dean's erection just won't budge. After a few minutes of whacking off and getting nowhere while becoming even more desperate—if that was even possible—Dean lets go of his dick and stares at the ceiling. He feels like burning up from the inside out, a fever muddling his brain and torturing his body. Dean is well-adjusted to being in pain, but this is completely different.
He's longing. Not only for release. Does this pollen work like a cupid's arrow, just more potently?
Didn't he tell Castiel that he was well-fed back when Famine ran rampant? What could he long for?
"Hello, Dean."
The hunter's eyes shoot to the angel suddenly standing on the other side of the room. His hands shoot to his crotch, body curling up in an attempt to cover himself. First Sam, now Castiel. Just great.
"What are you doing here, man!?"
Castiel cocks his head to the side and scrutinises him. "You called me, Dean."
"I didn't," the hunter bites as another wave of arousal overtakes his body.
"I felt your longing… so intense."
Dean's already flushed cheeks turn crimson. If Castiel could feel it, how strong does it have to be?
"Sorry. I'm a bit… indisposed."
Castiel looks at him, face infuriatingly neutral. "I can see that."
Dean sighs and gathers the blanket from the floor. "An Aztec god gave me sex pollen or something."
Castiel's mouth falls open for a long moment before he catches himself. "Xōchipilli?" he all but croaks. Dean has never heard the angel like that. He sounds devastated.
"So bad, huh?" he presses out, the weight of the blanket painful on his still raging boner.
"I… I might be able to help you," Castiel says, suddenly not looking like the mighty Angel of the Lord, but much more like Jimmy, insecurity and worry battling on his face. But Dean is too out of it to want to make it sense.
"Then hurry. This isn't exactly great here. If your mojo can make it go away…"
Castiel winces and looks down at the foot of the bed. "It's not my grace, Dean. It's… touch would help."
Dean doesn't like the sound of that. "Touch?"
"You need someone to touch you. Can I… check something?"
Dean works his jaw, his whole being fighting against the possibility of Castiel doing what Dean fantasised about too long for it not to mess with his head. But his body aches and the wave of arousal that washes over him as the angel walks closer is enough to blow his last working brain cell. He nods shakingly and sinks back into the mattress.
Castiel sits down on the edge of the bed and lays his hand on Dean's chest. It feels cool against his skin and Dean breathes a sigh of relief, the touch calming the turmoil inside him. It's still a stiff breeze blowing through his mind, but no storm anymore.
"How?" he breathes.
"Oxytocin," Castiel says calmly, his flickering eyes betraying his stoical countenance.
Dean's brain tries to catch up. Simple biology? It can't be that easy. "But Sam touched me, too. He helped me out of my clothes."
If it weren't impossible, Dean would think that Castiel is blushing now.
"Probably because you don't see your brother as a sexual option," Castiel says after clearing his throat.
Dean nods. Right. That makes sense. He tries hard not to think about the fact that Castiel seems to know that he considers him a sexual option. Is it so obvious?
"Dean, this kind of touch will only soothe the symptoms," Castiel explains and pulls his hand away from his chest. He hovers his hand over the place where Dean's dick is tenting the blanket. "I could help you."
Dean's eyes grow wide. It's not that he hasn't thought of this in weak moments, but the sudden wave of need sloshing through him surprises him still. "There's gotta be another way," he croaks.
Castiel bites his lip. "Unfortunately, there isn't."
Dean nods in understanding, eyes flickering through the room. "What exactly do you need to do?'
"I will bring you to release, and then, you can rest to regain your strength."
Dean swallows hard. That's not how he had imagined their first time to be. Not that it is truly 'a first time'. Castiel only offers it to help, clearly unaffected by the whole ordeal. And Dean isn't really well enough to get up and pick up a girl to take care of his not so little problem.
"O-okay. Let's get this over with," Dean presses out. He closes his eyes and feels how the blanket is lifted and strong fingers wrap around his shaft. Castiel's hand feels so perfect around him, moves in ways that press tears against Dean's eyelids. He wishes it would mean something, that it wasn't just 'lending a helping hand' in the most fucked up, literal way.
It takes only a few minutes until he comes with Castiel's name on his lips. Dean can't find it in himself to be embarrassed about it. He's exhausted and finally found release. He's dead tired, and the whole ordeal is over. "Thanks," he whispers before he falls into a deep slumber.
Castiel looks at the sleeping man for a long moment before he removes his hand and cleans him tenderly with a washcloth that he fetches from the bathroom. Grace just doesn't feel right to use in this fleeting moment of intimacy.
He tucks Dean in and watches over him as he has done so many times before.
***
"The article I found states that this curse can only be lifted by a very specific person," Sam says, considering Castiel carefully.
"That's correct," Castiel states matter-of-factly.
"So you're…"
"I am."
Sam pushes his hands into his waist and exhales loudly. "I'm glad you came."
Castiel smiles sadly. "He didn't even know that his soul was screaming for me."
"Does he know now?"
Castiel looks down at his hand lying on Dean's arm. "No." He gets up from the bed and cups Sam's shoulder. "Maybe, one day, he will." Castiel gives his shoulder a strong squeeze before he lets go. "You'll look after him for me, won't you?"
Sam nods. "You sure you don't wanna stay?"
Castiel turns and looks back at the man he loves. "He'll need you more when he'll wake up. Goodbye, Sam." And with a flapping sound, Castiel disappears into thin air.
Sam startles and huffs a laugh. He pulls a chair to the side of the bed and watches his brother sleep for a while before he opens his laptop and rereads the article that he found.
Only the touch of true love can lift the spell. The pollen isn't meant as a curse but as a gift to find one's soulmate.

we’re the stars; light after death
Miss me? It’s been way too long since I’ve posted a fic, and even longer since I’ve posted a destiel fic. Well, here’s my @november5bigbang fic!!
If you’re familiar with my angel wing headcanon, then you’re in for a treat ;)
With wonderful art by @transbijedi and @roxyandelsewhere!!!
Read on Ao3
summary:  Castiel sits in the Empty under a night sky, talking to his siblings. The Empty just wants to sleep. Or: 5 times Cas fought for his love +1 time he didn’t have to
preview:
“We’ll lose,” Dean stated, as if it was already decided. As if they weren’t the ones who’d rewritten the story countless times, against all odds. Then we’ll do that together too, Cas wanted to promise, but the words were stuck. He wanted to promise that he’d stay, he wouldn’t leave Dean, but something in his gut told him that this wasn’t how it ended.
“I just led us into another trap, all because I couldn’t hurt Chuck,” Dean continued, “Because I was angry and because I just needed something to kill, and because that’s all I know how to do.” The dry, broken tears in Dean’s eyes ripped right through the angel’s heart.
“Dean,” he pleaded softly, sternly. That’s not true.
“It was Chuck all along.” A broken chuckle escaped those perfect lips. Particles moved up to soothe the frown on his forehead, the splintering words. Dean swatted them away, as if they were no more than annoying flies. He looked up at him, a plea in his eyes. Dean was at the end of his rope, so sure he’d die, and Cas wanted nothing more than to tell him everything’s gonna be alright. It would be a lie, and they both knew that.
“We shouldn’t have left Sam and Jack. We should be there with them right now. Everybody’s gonna die, Cas. Everybody. I can’t stop it.” He should’ve seen it, Castiel thought. Should have seen the signs, the foreshadowing, the malicious, obvious plan. It was stupid to think that they were untouchable. Dean’s panic seeped over into the angel, particles suddenly blinking sirens.
“She’s gonna get through that door.”
Cas’s heart was hanging by a thread, looking into the abyss almost numbly. “I know,” he whispered.
“And she’s gonna kill you, and then she’s gonna kill me.” There was nothing they could do. Worse yet, the guilt Dean carried for the situation was palpable. They were cosmic play balls and Dean took it all on his conscience. “I’m sorry,” he said, breaking his heart’s rope.
The crease in his wings softened as he widened them almost invitingly. A midnight feather came loose and slowly spun toward the ground. Cas looked away from Dean because there was nothing he could do to change their fate. They were doomed. A firefly caught his attention as it flew between the shelves, falling down into the shadows. It was almost like—
“Wait, there is—,” Cas started, going over the idea in his head. It would work. It would hurt something awful, but if it meant saving Dean, he’d take on everything. “There’s one thing she’s afraid of.” He looked up at Dean with a wild fire of hope in his eyes. “There’s one thing strong enough to stop her,” Cas continued, desperate to explain, to see his hope mirrored in Dean. It would be the last he saw of him. Oh, what grace would it be if he saw him smile one last time.
“When Jack was dying, I made a deal to save them.”

It’d be a shame to not drop a destiel fic on thee destiel anniversary, right? On thee most destiel friday of all destiel fridays. So, for the @november5bigbang I present to you a fluffy normal life Destiel AU, starring Beekeeper-Dadstiel and Closeted-dumbass(affectionate)-Dean. There’s a little shop, locally grown food, a bunch of bees, delicious honey, and two idiots in love with each other. Enjoy!

Summary: Initially, Dean came by that little shop to get some locally grown food to cheer his brother up. And frankly, that was a great decision: The honey really was tasty, and that illegally cute shop owner slash bee-keeper? Breathtaking. In theory, it would be so easy to just casually ask him out one day. So damn easy. That is, if Dean just wasn't a closeted coward. And honestly, he felt rather comfortable in the closet. It was safe in there. But on the other hand, the warm feeling that this cute bee-keeper's smile sparked inside him, and his incredible blue eyes ...    - A normal life Destiel AU. Cas is around. He’s tucked away in the library right now, insisting on doing research. For a couple hours every day, Castiel declares his intent to scan lore for a way to fully restore his grace. The Empty nearly stripped him of it entirely and even after weeks of rest, he’s still nearly human. Dean tries not to think too hard about Cas’s search. He hadn’t thought about the consequences of running into The Empty, guns blazing to pull him out - if he had he might have tried to find a way to keep Cas’s grace intact.
When Cas doesn’t have his nose buried in ancient tomes, Dean makes it his responsibility to keep him entertained. Usually it’s mundane things like running to the store, but he lets Cas drive sometimes. At least once a week, Dean will take Cas to the diner just inside of town - he and Cas were regulars now, complete with their table tucked away in the back corner and servers that greeted them by name. Almost every night they end up in the Dean cave, where Dean and Cas take turns picking movies. Sometimes, Jack will find his way into the room and sit nestled between them on the couch. Dean doesn’t dare say it out loud, but those days are his favorites.
Since they’ve rescued Cas, he hasn’t left the bunker. Dean thinks a lot of that can be contributed to Jack’s choice to give up the God thing. Cas had hauled him off to his room and talked to him in a hushed, serious voice for a long time. The next day Jack moved back into the bunker. He’d arrived on the doorstep, looking a lot more like a four year old than he had before.
And Dean’s been loving it. It means Cas won’t just disappear somewhere for weeks on end. Dean still hasn’t just asked him to stay. He isn’t sure why the words get stuck in his throat every time he looks at Cas. Maybe it’s because he knows Cas loves him. He can’t say it back, not yet at least. And asking him to stay feels a lot like saying it back.
So he’s just basking in the calm before whatever shitstorm he’s sure is coming. His family is all safe under one roof. Cas keeps him company while he does chores. Sam’s in and out, usually trailing after Eileen, but he keeps in touch. Every once in a while there’s a hunter looking for a place to crash for the night puttering around. Dean’s loathe to disturb the routine.
But, he knows Sam’s right, so he tries to find a case.
“Some weird cattle deaths in Indiana,” Sam says, looking up.
Dean frowns over at him. “Isn’t there some weird bovine flu going on?”
Sam blinks and taps at his keyboard, clicks a few times, reads silently, and then looks across at Dean. “How did you know that?”
“Saw that one like half an hour ago. I didn’t think it was worth checking out,” he says. “Do you?”
“No,” Sam says, leaning back in his chair. “I mean. We should keep an eye on it, just in case, but it’s not worth sending you out on.”
They fall back into silence. Dean’s about to give up and tell Sam that he’ll just hang out at the bunker like he has been doing, find something here to keep him busy, when he sees something promising.
“Sammy, I think I got something,” he says.
Sam looks up at him and nods, indicating he’s listening.
“There’s this little town outside of Raleigh,” Dean starts. “Two couples, both married in the last six months, have turned up dead. The first two kind of went crazy and went at each other’s chests.”
“Gross, you thinking werewolves?”
“No,” Dean says. “It doesn’t say anything about getting to their hearts. Obviously, I’d have to check that.”
“Okay, and the second couple?”
“Ate each other’s faces off.”
“So, our kind of weird.”
Dean leans back in his chair. “Yeah, looks like.”
Sam shuts his laptop. “Sounds kinda like Famine.”
“Sam, we killed him. He’s gone, Dean says, going over possibilities in his own head.
“Yeah, I know. Might be a good starting point, though.”
“I gotcha,” Dean says, pushing himself away from the table. “I’m gonna go find Cas and tell him to get ready.”
“Yeah, you’re right.” Sam smirks over his laptop at Dean. “It’s probably a good idea you don’t take this one alone,” Sam says. He recomposes himself and levels Dean with a serious look. “Call me if you need anything.”
Dean nods before ducking out of the room. He steps into the doorway leading into the library. His gaze falls on Cas. He’s sitting in an armchair with his feet planted firmly against the ground. He’s got a book propped open against one of the chair’s arms with his body firmly angled toward it.
The light above him makes his eyelashes cast shadows down his cheeks. His lips are pursed ever so slightly as he stares down at the page in front of him. Clearly, he isn’t getting whatever answers he was hoping to find. Dean shook the guilt off - he did his best, and is still doing his best, to get Cas’s grace back.
There’s a half full cup of coffee sitting on the end table next to him. Dean can’t help but smile to himself. Despite the guilt, he’s incredibly endeared to how human Cas looks right now. He’s well aware of the fact that his best friend is an angel that’s older than he can fathom who once held the ability to smite him down with the flick of is wrist, but sometimes he just looks like a dorky little dude.
Cas looks up, like Dean’s presence and the weight of his watching pulled him out of his focus. Dean looks away for a moment, not quite able to meet Cas’s eyes. He feels a rush of embarrassment at being caught staring; it’s not like he meant to.

Dean doesn't say 'I love you' back right away. It's the first thing he thinks when he sees Cas back from the Empty, but then the words get caught in his throat and won't dislodge.
He kisses Cas instead and hopes that gets the message across.
In the end, it takes him three weeks. It's constantly on his mind, every time he looks at Cas, an endless litany of I love you I love you I love you but the words won't come out.
They kiss a lot in those three weeks. They also have sex and it's weird and awkward and wonderful. Most of all, they touch each other nearly constantly. Dean feels like he's been starved of it for years, this intoxicating warmth, and now he's gorging himself and can't bring himself to stop, no matter how self-conscious he is about it.
The nights are the best and the worst; even when they don't have sex they still spend every night completely wrapped up in each other, bodies intertwined as if they'll never be parted.
It's one such night, three weeks in, that Dean says it back. Cas' arms are wrapped around his waist, their fingers resting intertwined against Dean's chest. Cas somehow finds the space to wriggle even closer, nose brushing against the back of Dean's neck and then he's pressing the smallest, barely-there kiss into Dean's skin and Dean feels something come unfast.
"I love you."
The words slip out effortlessly, barely a whisper and yet echoing in the silence between them.
Cas goes stiff against him, for just a moment. Then he's squeezing his arms around Dean even tighter, taking in a shuddering breath.
"Sorry it took me so long to say it," Dean feels the need to add, after the silence stretches on for too long.
"Don't be," Cas says, voice hoarse. "Don't be sorry. I would have waited-"
He doesn't say how long. Doesn't need to; they both know how that sentence ends.
"I love you, too," he says instead.

he said yes
"He said yes?" Cas asks.
Jack nods. "He said yes."
"In those exact words?"
"In those exact words."
The keys are cold in Cas's hands. He eyes the Impala, shining from last night’s wax even in the dim light of the garage, and looks at Jack again.
"You're sure he said yes?"
“I’m sure.”
Cas knows Jack is incapable of dishonesty. Every word Jack speaks is earnest and true. Yet, Cas finds it impossible to believe Dean will allow Jack to drive the Impala.
“We’re married,” Cas says, “and I’m not allowed to drive it.”
“I did ask him directly.”
Cas runs his fingers over the edge of the key, letting it tickle his skin. “Maybe I should go ask him.”
Jack smiles, as kind and earnest as ever. “Okay. I’ll wait here.”
Cas leaves the garage and takes the familiar route down the bunker’s hall to his and Dean’s shared room. When he enters, Dean, sitting on the bed, looks up from his laptop with a raised eyebrow.
Holding up the keys, Cas asks, “You said yes?”
“I said yes,” Dean says.
“Without coming with us?”
“Buddy, it’s just a trip to the grocery store.”
“But it’s your Baby.”
Dean smiles and set the laptop aside. He stands from the bed and steps in front of Cas. Dean’s eyes are sparkling.
“She sure is,” Dean says, cupping Cas’s face between his hands, “and who better to keep an eye on her than you?”
“But you never let me drive it.” Cas tries to protest but his words come out breathy as Dean closes in.
“Because you look so pretty in the passenger’s seat.” Dean leaves a soft kiss against Cas’s lips and pulls back. “But, hey, if you wanna drive so bad, consider this your trial run. Get my Baby back without a single scratch and I might consider it.”
“Jack has driven twice, Dean.”
“Well,” Dean says, leaning in for another kiss, “I guess it’s a challenge then.”
Five minutes later, Cas returns to the garage. He tosses the keys to Jack, who catches them just before they hit the ground.
“He said yes,” Cas says.

For most couples, the six month anniversary means that you’re still in the honeymoon phase, that you don’t mind picking their socks up off the floor yet, that you’re still trying to figure out how to use that salad spinner someone got you because it was the cheapest thing on your registry, that you’re going to go on a nice date with flowers and be sappy.
For Dean Winchester, it means that he’s doing laundry because Cas’s favorite sweater has blood all down the front and now Dean absolutely must get the stain out, even though he told Cas not to wear it on a hunt.
(Now would be a great time to mention that at least it’s not Cas’s blood.)
Cold water, lemon juice, and baking soda on the stain and then Dean lets the sweater sit, spread out on top of the closed washing machine, while he tries to figure out this at-home dry-cleaning kit thingy that Sam got recently, because apparently Sam now wants to wear clothes that you can’t just throw into the washer with the agitator on the highest setting.
Cas disappeared after they got back from the hunt, muttering something about errands, and by the time he gets back, the sweater has been through a wash cycle and is laying across the ironing board to dry so that the neck doesn’t stretch out, and Dean’s almost caught the dryer on fire with the dry-cleaning bag.
Cas peers around the laundry room’s doorjamb, holding something behind his back. He’s clearly trying to be sneaky, but since Dean’s facing the door while folding laundry (matching all of Jack’s fun patterned socks should be an Olympic sport, he thinks), he’s spotted immediately.
“Whatcha got there?” Dean asks, studying two socks with fish on them. They’re different. Maybe.
Yeah, one’s got a blue background and the other is…teal?
“Nothing,” Cas hedges.
“Liar.”
“Well I was hoping you’d be in the library or something so this could be more romantic.”
“Oh, you want me to move?” Dean rolls two yellow-and-orange striped socks together. The kid’s getting his fashion sense from Cas, obviously, because these days Cas essentially wears every thrift store reject. “Stage your romantic gesture perfectly?”
Cas rolls his eyes (he should be nicer, Dean got the blood stain out of that damn sweater) and pulls his hand out from behind his back, placing a vase of flowers on the counter where Dean’s folding.
“Oh,” Dean says.
The bouquet is so very Cas–a spray of yellow and white and pink that doesn’t exactly go together, but looks great anyways. For some reason, Dean thinks he might cry.
He realizes that he is crying when he drops the socks as Cas pulls him into his arms.
“I’m sorry,” Cas says, “I didn’t mean to–”
“No, no, this is–” Dean has to swallow. “No one’s ever gotten me flowers before, dude.”
Cas steps back. “Oh.” Now he’s rocking a sad smile too.
“If you cry, I swear to god–”
“I’m going to get you flowers again sometime,” Cas says.
“Okay, great.” Where are those socks he dropped?
“Dean.”
“Mmm?”
“Look at me.”
Dean looks at him.
“I love you.”
“I love you too, sap. Now are you going to help me fold laundry or not?” Dean conveniently ignores that he might still be crying, which makes him the sap.
The flowers go on the dresser in their room, and they do end up having a date that night, even instead of a fancy restaurant it’s burgers and a double feature in the next town over. Maybe for Dean and Cas the six-month anniversary is also about a nice date with flowers and being sappy.
Just on their terms.

The summer Dean is ten and Sam is six, they stay at Bobby’s for a month.
John doesn’t ask Bobby if they can stay–he pretty much just dumps Dean and Sam on the porch and drives off. Dean hears the squeal of Bobby’s front door opening as he watches the Impala’s tail lights fade into the distance.
Bobby didn’t plan to take care of them, so they end up going to the grocery store at nine pm. Sam gets excited about everything–riding in the cart, getting to choose what kind of bread they have, carefully holding the egg carton, telling Bobby how this is the most they’ve had to eat in weeks.
(Dean carefully avoids Bobby’s gaze when Sam says that.)
The next day is a Sunday, and at breakfast Bobby tells them that he’s signing them up for some free summer program at the Boys and Girls Club downtown.
“There’ll be other kids your age,” Bobby says. “It’ll be good for you.”
The first day, Monday, Dean lasts until pool time after lunch.
“You can’t drown the other kids,” Bobby says sternly in the truck, a dripping-wet Dean in the passengers seat.
“They were pullin’ Sammy’s hair,” Dean complains.
“Ignore ‘em.”
Tuesday’s not much better–some other kid at lunch says they’re “weird” because they don’t have a mom, so Dean dumps his milk carton out onto that kid’s head.
“You just said I couldn’t drown anyone,” Dean says to Bobby’s stern face when he picks him up.
“I also said to ignore ‘em.”
Wednesday: Dean shoves someone on the playground for teasing Sam about the soles of his sneakers falling off.
Thursday: another boy makes fun of Dean for “eating too fast.” Dean leaves with a split lip.
Friday: the secretary at the club tells Bobby regretfully, “We can’t keep Dean anymore.”
“What about Sam?” Bobby asks.
“He’s been an angel.” The secretary beams at Sam. “You can go inside the gym with the other kids.”
Sam’s lip wobbles. “I’m not goin’ without Dean.” He grabs Dean’s hand.
Dean bends down to his brother’s height. “I’m sorry, Sammy. You gotta go by yourself.”
“Don’t wanna.”
“Sucks.” Dean ruffles Sam’s hair. “Go on, go play with your friends.”
The secretary really does look sorry.
The whole ride back to Bobby’s, Dean’s sure he’s gonna get it. If his dad was around, well…
Dean’s glad his dad’s not around.
“Get out of the truck,” Bobby says after skidding into the drive, and then he gestures for Dean to follow him into the house.
Bobby pours himself some coffee.
Dean waits.
Bobby drinks his coffee.
Dean waits.
“I got a Pontiac in the yard that needs work,” Bobby finally says. “You wanna help?”
“What–help?” Dean stares at him. “You’re not mad at me?”
“Oh, I’m mad, but shoutin’ at you ain’t gonna fix anything.” Bobby stoops down to Dean’s level, mirroring Dean and Sam’s conversation from half an hour before. “When a kid says shit about you or your brother, that ain’t a reflection on you. It’s a reflection on them. But you can’t just lash out at ‘em every time, okay? You wanna be frustrated? That’s fine. Then you gotta find another way to get that frustration out.”
Dean keeps staring. The room is getting blurry.
“You can cry, too,” Bobby says.
“Dad said–”
“Screw your dad. Boys can cry, and if you don’t you might explode.”
Dean cries.
Then they go fix up that Pontiac.
(Years later, Dean smashes the windows of the Impala in that same scrapyard. He cries then, too.)
