one of my absolute favorite things about fanfiction is the the way it just “i will take this shamelessly self-indulgent/ridiculous as absolute crack concept and i will treat it seriously.”
because my god it lets you explore those really insane contrived ideas, or the ones that 14 year old you would have sighed about but been embarrassed by, but in a way that really examines it all, lets it have depth and nuance, lets you turn it over at every angle to find the surprises and the touching moments and the painful parts and the ways it both is and isn’t silly or exactly what you want it to be.
it takes all those ideas and just lets them have dignity.
fanfiction will let you write or read about two dudes accidentally raising a baby while running their coffee shop which one of them uses as a front for their assassin side gig all while they slowly fall in love, or about a woman who is just like you and so many like you, even in the embarrassing, not-cute-quirky ways, who survives an apocalypse and has to do so at the side of the actor she loved so much but would never have looked twice at her before the end of the world.
and it lets you do all that while plumbing the emotional, moral, philosophical depths, and the ways the dream holds up and where it wrinkles, how you can let realism in, but not in a way that ruins the fantasy, instead only enhancing it.
mainstream literature and published genre fiction has been doing a lot of this kind of thing for straight, white, cis men for a long, long time now, and it has strongly boxed out everyone else and fostered a culture that ridiculed anyone else for wanting to have that for themselves.
but fanfiction lets us all have that, and it doesn’t ask us to present it with a wince, with a shy mumble; it never asks us to be embarrassed by what we love or what we want.
just take it seriously, fanfiction offers. because you deserve to.

No but seriously as I’ve gotten older I realize more and more that although white gays do face certain levels of oppression they are still white people.....like does that make sense?

How did I not hear about France banning hijabs? What’s going on?
long story short, there’s legislation in the process of being passed that would
ban girls under 18 from wearing any form of religious head covering in public, and although it’s obviously aimed at muslim women, it would also affect other faith groups that practice similar forms of modest dress
ban islamic swimwear in schools and public (there is already a modest swimwear ban in place at public beaches, this just extends it)
ban mothers wearing hijab from entering schools or participating in school field trips or extra curriculars
ban the slaughter of halal poultry - the cheapest and most easily accessible form of meat protein for the muslim community
extend school hijab bans to universities
prevent muslim women from choosing healthcare providers based on gender (which many muslim women prefer to do, since many exams require removal of clothing, etc)
ban muslim parents from homeschooling
force halal markets to sell pork and alcohol or face closure
ban foreign flags at weddings

sometimes i really love my fics. i wrote that because i wanted to read it. i love it. nobody visits my fics more than me. they remind me that i’m a hard worker, that i created something. it’s mine and i cherish it and love it because it’s exactly what i wanted so i made it.
and other days i’m crippled by self criticism and hate everything and can’t bear to look at my own work because i know it’ll never compare to the greats
but i live for the days i love my work. because it’s mine, and i made it. i didn’t wait for somebody else to make what i dream about. i went and did it myself.
so don’t feel like your work is awful
it’s the stuff you dreamed about. it’s the stuff you decided to make a reality. it’s not about quality, or poetry, or how perfectly your sculpt your words or keep it so deeply in character; because it’s what you dreamed and it’s what you wanted to see, so you made it.
keep writing; it’s yours, and you made it. and if you want to continue to sharpen and improve yourself? then do it. it’s all yours and you can make it whatever you want.
keep writing.

Me: wow I’m way too attached to fictional characters
Me: *sees y’all send death threats to writers because you didn’t agree with their decisions*
Me: never mind I’m attached the healthy amount

before tfatws comes out, i just want to get this out there (a rant):
disclaimer: i am not hating on bucky barnes or sebastian stan.
the show is called falcon and the winter soldier. it’s not called the bucky show. it’s not called the winter soldier show. i’ve seen too much of this out there even before the show has come out, where people have been complaining about the lack of lines bucky has, or how it feels to them like sam’s getting the focus of the show.
sam is currently one of the most visible (read: only) black superheroes in the mcu, as anthony mackie has touched on in multiple interviews. as of right now, he has a responsibility and a job that bucky does not, so the question that basically amounts to “why’s the black guy getting so much screentime” is tone deaf and appalling.
and to the people who direct these sentiments at anthony mackie as an actor: anthony mackie is finally getting the recognition he deserves, with the support of all his castmates (including sebastian stan), and it is not the place of primarily white fans to tell him he doesn’t deserve the spotlight just as much as sebastian for whatever reason, however dirty you feel bucky has been done in the mcu.
Tumblr media
this breaks my heart. he has done nothing to feel this way aside from having mainly white costars, but that pattern should not continue for this show as well.
to continue the tangent of “bucky deserved the shield” or “sam isn’t worthy of the shield” or any of that to anthony mackie’s face, to disregard and downplay his so far incredible portrayal of sam wilson, a character that has been canonically disregarded by people to the point where most of america united behind the “not my captain america” movement (which is likely something he will struggle with in this show as well), only proves the purpose and validity of his role.
so when the show comes out, i want to see everyone put some respect on samuel thomas wilson’s name. i don’t want to see sam sidelined for yet another white man, not when this is the show that was built to put him in the spotlight. i don’t want to see sam slander when he’s “taking away bucky’s spotlight.” they are sharing the spotlight. sam has as much of a right to it as bucky. and that is a fact.
i yield my time. <3

In many cultures, ethnic groups, and nations around the world, hair is considered a source of power and prestige. African people brought these traditions and beliefs to the Americas and passed them down through the generations.
In my mother’s family (Black Americans from rural South Carolina) the women don’t cut their hair off unless absolutely necessary (i.e damage or routine trimming). Long hair is considered a symbol of beauty and power; my mother often told me that our hair holds our strength and power. Though my mother’s family has been American born for several generations, it is fascinating to see the beliefs and traditions of our African ancestors passed down. We are emotionally and spiritually attached to our hair, cutting it only with the knowledge that we are starting completely clean and removing stagnant energy.
Couple this with the forced removal and covering of our hair from the times of slavery and onward, and you can see why so many Black women and men alike take such pride and care in their natural hair and love to adorn our heads with wigs, weaves, braids, twists, accessories, and sharp designs.
Hair is not just hair in African diaspora cultures, and this is why the appropriation and stigma surrounding our hair is so harmful.
