An Ode to Aziraphale
Aziraphale,
Yes, I adore you because you are an angel.
A literal angel from Heaven and yet you are not perfect.
I love that you try and do the right thing even when you know your superiors will not like it, even when your plans go awry.
I adore your sassy ass.
I think you are odd and brave and entirely too wrapped in your own head sometimes.
I love the joy you find in Earthly, human things you don't need.
You are adorable when you get annoyed.
It's very, ahh, affecting.
Your silliness makes me giggle and persuades me to be more open and free and unashamed in my own rl.
Your huge heart and openness to learn and to consider others' experience and point of view are themselves a miracle.
Angel or not, you care for the humans you don't entirely understand.
I adore that you fell in love with a demon not because he's handsome, but because he's kind and considerate, and because he cares.
I adore how much you rankle each other and yet you are each others' worlds.
I love that you pay attention. To things that may seem as ephemeral as an actor's enjoyment in playing a role, or the playwright's success with it.
I adore you for trying to cheer up a friend who you knew was very likely doing things you should be wanting to punish him for.
I love that after 6000 years with humans, watching them murder each other in increasingly innovative ways you still melt at signs of love between them.
I adore that you are happy to do things imperfectly even though you could miracle everything to be impeccable every time.
This goes for your worn, loved clothes as well.
I adore that you implicitly trust a demon.
And that you taught him to trust more as well.
I adore that you pay attention to what others do and not what they say.
I adore you for not giving up.
I adore you for making the hardest decision to have a shot at the best possible future.
You deserve to be happy angel.
And adored.

What is love?
Well, according to Neil Gaiman...
And I'll just drop this here...
You know, just in case the Good Omens fandom hadn't cried enough today.

Ok so the ONE thing I will give Crowley a little bit of shit for ( and even then I’m so sorry bbg but just listen) is the “ no nightingales” line.
Cuz that was so unnecessarily cruel?? Like at this point they’d already broken each other’s hearts. This is before his last hurrah to communicate via smooch. So like just why?? Why throw that in his face? Your song? The symbol of your love? Yeah it smushed our hearts but it cut Aziraphale deeper than all of us combined. Look at his face after Crowley says this. He’s not just hurt. He’s angry. He’s pissed that not only has he been rejected ( his POV) but now Crowley is just kicking salt in the wound. I think this is the only time on their whole entire history Crowley has truly and willfully been cruel to his angel. Which like.. Crowley you dumbass! You can’t just say the worst possible thing to the person you love most in the universe and then kiss him!! On what planet was that going to work?!?!

Spare a thought for Con O'Neill who, for months, went to comic cons and had to listen to people telling him how important Izzy is to them, how they see themselves in him and how, if something bad happened to Izzy, they would be absolutely devastated. Man deserves an award.

So Anne Bonny is unironically right about Stede being a heartbreaker, like just look at how he interacts with Hellcat Maggie, Anne herself, Ed. This man just goes around dropping utterly cheesy lines without even a hint of awareness that he's flirting. I know there's some random saleswoman in the republic of pirates who fell madly in love with him because he was the first man to ever treat her like a lady and then she saw him and Ed on a date and now she's sobbing to her friends like "I can't believe he was gay the whole time"
Stede "why are all the good ones gay" Bonnet. Stede "the first man to bother to treat Blackbeard like a gentleman" Bonnet. Stede "got taught how to treat a lady of good breeding in etiquette class when he was 15 and autistically applied it to every woman he ever met regardless of social class for the rest of his life" Bonnet

Ed watching Stede kill for him is a parallel to Stede freaking out over Ed shaving his beard for him. Ed thinks Stede has lost some of the kindness he admired in the same way stede thought ed lost some of the toughness he admired. They both see something they want and idealize in the other person and struggle with the parts of each other that they hate in themselves. And that's a gorgeous meaty dynamic to explore.

say what you want about him but black pete didn’t miss even once this season. “oh look, running water” “i can’t do it. i’ve never even seen one of these things before” “you have impeccable balance, babe” “they must’ve been really into geometry” “you’re making it really hard to look up to you right now” “come find me when blackbeard isn’t living in your head rent free” “i never hear anything about the fact that you lived” “we’re sort of in the pre revenge window” just absolute bangers all around, no one is doing it like him

the first kiss meant "i like you" (ed to stede)
the second kiss meant "i've missed you" (mutual)
the third kiss meant "i want you" (mutual)
the fourth kiss meant "i love you" (ed to stede)
and the fifth kiss meant "i know" (stede to ed)

Seeing some chatter about people being disappointed that Stede didn't say I love you back to Ed, and while I get it on the level that it's always just nice to hear the words, I actually really love that Stede's response was "I know. I know that."
Because Ed just went through (yet another) traumatic event where he thought Stede had died, and not only that, but he died and the last words they shared were of anger. Think about the grief and regret of that, how it would have consumed him if he had to spend the rest of his life thinking about how the love of his life died and the last thing he said to him was that the only time they had sex was a mistake, and that they should just stop talking before they say something they'd regret.
He sees Stede, and he sees that he's alive, and the first thing he needs to do is make sure Stede knows he loves him. He needs to erase all the bad memories from their last interaction.
Because compounding this is Ed's old belief that he's unlovable. And if you fear you're unlovable, you don't want to give the people you care about most reason to stop caring about you. He's saying "I love you, I'm sorry I acted that way, please, I didn't mean to hurt you, I love you, I love you, I love you."
And Stede, so gently and reassuringly, says "I know that." It doesn't matter that Ed's not perfect. It doesn't matter if sometimes they argue. It doesn't matter if Ed needs time to himself. It doesn't matter if Ed's still sorting out who he is and what he wants to do in life.
Stede knows Ed loves him. He will always know Ed loves him. Even when things get difficult, which they undoubtedly will again, he'll know Ed loves him. Ed doesn't need to do anything to prove that. He doesn't need to be afraid that if he slips up, Stede will stop loving him, or think for one second that Ed doesn't love him with all of his heart.
He just needs to... be Edward.
We've seen all season how much Stede loves Ed. Ed has seen it, too. It's what gave him the courage to begin opening up to him again and being vulnerable with him.
But this reinforcement that Stede accepts him, all parts of him, is what Ed really needs to hear in that moment.
And that's why Ed smiles.
