一年前に「youは何しに日本へ」に出ました。We were on a kind of big TV show all across Japan last year, making beats out of weird stuff. I think I’m better at it now, but doing the thing with them under a quick quick deadline kind of sparked my first interest in cutting up videos like drum beats. 楽しかったです! Also I was really surprised to find out that quite a few TV shows here still shoot on mini DV tapes. People always talk about Japan loving fax machines, but I’m not sure too many people know about this mini DV video business. Crazy! Like a mix between watching someone play pong on an old iPod and wind chimes in a whirlpool, the “Perpetual Melody Machine” is a really simple prototype I came up with about 20 years ago while trying to think of a way to make a record that could be a never-ending loop but also have enough randomness to not become annoyingly repetitive. The pendulum-like swing of the mallet was kind of a nod to the minimalist music of Steve Reich and Kousugi Takehisa, with the way ideas are sometimes better than finished products like John Cage, and the somnolent spinning of Alexander Calder (I had to use a thesaurus to find a good word that started with s), mixed with the playful experimentation in the “Useless Machines” of Bruno Munari. We’ve used it in the background of live shows all over the world. More than just adding a subtle layer of haphazard notes, it is just kind of hypnotizing to look at. Anyway, I want to explore more of these kind of off-beat ways of making ambient music this year. Computers are great, but sometimes it is nice to see what is happening. I’m not sure if it is really music or art, but it is an idea. And despite what people who hustle too much will tell, ideas aren’t nothing. I sampled a handmade steel tongue drum into the OP-1 to be able play lower octaves and arpeggios. I really like the simple, pure tones this drums makes and they translate incredibly well into the OP-1’s built in sampler. There is a hint of low-bit-rate high frequency artifacts that work well with the original subtle mid-range timbre of the drum. The drum is called a Sazanami drum @sazanami_drum It was made by hand in Wakayama, Japan. The creator, Hasegawa-san, sent it to us as a present because he liked our albums. But, I ended up loving the drum so much I bought an extra one. They are great have a really poetic tone. He is making really special things! さざなみドラムめっちゃ好きです。 Anyway, I’m not sure if this tiny experiment is a song or not, but I do like it as a little melody memo to maybe use somewhere one day. LINK IN BIO (sample sets): I made a sample set and instrument patches for Kontakt, Ableton and the OP-1 of our piano with every single note recorded in the voice memos app on an old iPhone. We could have recorded it with better microphones, but then it might might just sound like a lot of other piano plugins out there. There is something kind of charming about this voice memo tone. They feel like ideas ideas you are just sketching down. There are also bonus patches that sound like a micro-cassette and and a drippy droney tone too. It all has a really nice handmade lo-fi sound, perfect for adding character and charm to cold computer recordings. There are Ableton (.alp), Kontakt (.nki) and individual sample files of the notes (for other samplers). There is a longer video about it on our YouTube channel too. My favorite part of yesterday’s video was finding out that “scary T. rex” sounds the same pronounced forwards as backwards. One good thing about doing these seemingly pointless experiments is learning new (seemingly pointless) stuff.
