This made me think immediately of how childhood trauma changes how you grow and still has an impact in adulthood. In the same way a tree will retain an unnatural shape and scars from growing around a fence even after the fence is removed- the shape we have had to grow into to compensate for trauma still remains long after the trauma itself is gone.

Healing takes time and even then, for good or ill, we are still changed in some ways that are permanent.

But most importantly, despite the rock, despite the fence, despite the contortions we’ve had to put ourselves through, we can still blossom, we can still hold strength, we can still grow into something strong and beautiful.

Growing.

This is such a poignant comic. I have struggled with depression since adolescence. It is not like tv’s romanticised artistic depression where I elaborately paint my feelings on giant canvases and lament over how misunderstood I am before having a really successful art exhibition (if only)... It is a grey dread that this is it, I will never have another creative thought or feeling ever again. I have to work really hard to remember that this is a phase, that I will not always feel this way and that I need to trust my sense of wonder and creativity will eventually return.

Being trans definitely adds some fuel to my worries over not having a place in this world. Reading those thoughts in someone else’s artwork is at once really sad but also strangely reassuring. It serves as a reminder that while I might not be able to see I am sharing a space in this world with other people I have lots in common with, it doesn’t mean they aren’t there. Sending compassion and cups of tea to anyone who needs one x

I came to the Magnus Archives only last year, drawn to it by the fan art. Now with the new Magnus Protocol, I wanted to doodle the characters how I picture them before I see any fan art or look up anything about the voice actors. I remember Alex and Jonny saying how they really liked seeing early fan art before Jon, Martin et al had more fixed appearances in the fandom. I’m so interested to see how the fandom’s depictions of the new cast will grow and change as the series goes on and we see more artwork (: now I’ve drawn my versions, I can feverishly start searching for everyone else’s fan art! XD
