i'm pretty sure that gordon freeman might be the single most broken man in any piece of media, quite possibly ever. i know this isn't exactly a hot take i kinda just wanted to talk about it. if you accept the hypothesis that he was actually, y'know, wandering around while in stasis (which i do) he lived years and years in utter nothing after killing a god in a dimension he tore open a portal to, that resulted in the death of most of his friends and colleagues. he saw untold destruction, ran from government death squads, and quite literally stared into an abyss that stared back at him. then he is offered a non-choice by a seemingly all-powerful interdimensional entity, and gets locked away. again, whether or not you think he was awake, that's utterly horrifying and would cause most anyone's mind to shatter. and then he re-appears after a short monologue from that entity about how he destroyed the entire world. everyone he knows is either dead, or an old man. the vortiguants he fought and the people in the cities he incited the destruction and subjugation of see him as something like a messiah, following him with an almost religious fervor. not a single person understands what he's been through, everyone's just happy to see him, and he can't bring himself to say anything. and then, after fighting his way through alien monsters, zombies, biomechanical weapons, and a multi-dimensional empire with technology he can barely understand, he gets locked away again, if for but a moment. he then gets saved by those vortigaunts, which he killed hundreds of, and has to just, keep fucking going, trekking through forests, caves, abandoned cities, fighting all the same foes over, and over, and over again. and then one of his last friends dies, only for him to suddenly not. and the woman that has been one of his only consistent companions is gone, and he knows. he knows exactly what happened to her. i don't think anyone can imagine the sheer, utter loneliness that would come from being in that situation. ignoring the complete and utter horror he's faced, gordon is just, completely fucking alone in next to everything he's experienced, with eli being the only person to know who g-man is. at that point i don't think you'd have the capacity to speak, much less process what you'd been through. you'd just have to keep walking. and walking. and walking.
