Seconds and Seconds of InfoSecond
Tumblr media
Winter months in the Northeast are notorious for wild weather fluctuations, replete with rapid changes in temperature and precipitation that breeds a level of uncertainty among its residents that we'll simply never get accustomed to.
One thing that is certain during these long winter months, however, is continuous output of IBM's weekly web series, The InfoSecond, which I conveniently write and host.
In the past few episodes, we’ve highlighted a plethora of rising cyber security threats by attempting to infuse a bit of humor to the glut of information in an effort to attract and maintain audience interest. While not everything is a 'hit’, the misses are incredibly valuable learning experiences which are helping us mold a better end product.
We’re continuously learning and experimenting with the format in an attempt to discover the best possible way to deliver this information in a way that resonates with our audience and I’m excited about the future for it (and video storytelling for brands in general).
Check out the past 4 episodes and check back on IBM Security’s YouTube account every Sunday for new ones!

Sharing Stories with Godzilla
After a 4+ week hiatus, the IBM InfoSecond web series is back with it’s first all-new episode of 2016 - and we went BIG. I mean really big.
Hear me share stories about how Japan’s financial sector is under an all-out cyber assault, learn how everything from trains to cars to Smart TVs are at risk of being hacked, discover ways organizations can incorporate encrypted mobile messaging into their overall strategy, and hear about the surprising trend of cybercrime customer support. Watch it all now!
youtube
You can also read in-depth into all these stories here: https://securityintelligence.com/the-infosecond-week-of-jan-18-2016/
And if you prefer to listen to your security stories, check out our InfoSecond podcast on iTunes and be sure to subscribe!
As a reminder, this is the current weekly video web series I’ve created and host, so be sure to keep checking back at the start of every week for more cyber and mobile security news in every format.

Encryption and Mobile Messaging in the Enterprise
One of the biggest hot button topics over the past few months - and one that'll undoubtedly continue through an eventful 2016 election process and beyond - has been around encryption, which in it's simplest definition, is a security process that encodes and secures sensitive information, making it readable only by it's intended, authorized recipient.
It's a process that has helped keep our private information, well, private, stopping nefarious parties in their tracks from accessing and exploiting the personal data that we hold dear.
While the dominating talk right now revolves around the demand from Government agencies to Tech companies to include backdoor access (bad, and wholly unsafe idea), I won't be delving into that.
Instead, I've written an article extolling the benefits of organizations instituting secure, encrypted mobile messaging to drive collaboration, efficiency, and productivity in the workplace.
Read up on how it impacts you and your company right here, right now.

Mobility Bling
youtube
Come for the dance moves, stay for the mobile news in this week’s edition of ‘Mobility Minute’.
In an effort to leverage the popularity of Drake’s most recent video, ‘Hotline Bling’, we’ve attempted (emphasis on attempted) to parody the song, dance moves, and general feel in our newest MM episode.
One of the main focuses of this show is to make mobile news more easily digestible and capture the audiences’ attention through a more entertaining feel vs. just a droll, talking head video series. A key way to do that is to weave pop culture references into it.
If you like this week’s episode, be sure to share it across your social presences. Considering we live in a mobile world, the information is useful for the majority of users. Plus, if you’re not entirely interested in mobile news, you can still point and laugh at my terrible dancing/singing skills. Everybody wins!

Cyber Security, Mobile Security and Twin Peaks
The owls are not what they seem. Neither are the mobile security videos. Well, this week at least.
In a continued effort to make mobile security news more interesting for our audience, we head up to Twin Peaks in our latest episode, in search of news around the new Android Marshmallow OS, the iOS 9.1 update, mobile payment statistics and a case of mobilephobia.
Fire walk with me to the video below and watch it now:
youtube
On the other side, in the infosec world, we’ve ramped up a new episode of The InfoSecond featuring stories around banks, bitcoins, and blockchain technology, polymorphic malware, new EMV credit cards (and the security around them), and tips for creating a culture of security in the workplace. Check it out!

Old Friends, Pork Roll Egg and Cheese, and the Real Jersey Shore #VLOG
Tumblr media
“The results of a new study are out this week saying that New Jersey is one of the most livable states in the country. The study has a margin of error of 100 percent.” - Conan O’Brien
There is perhaps no other State in the Union that finds itself the butt of more jokes than New Jersey. It smells. It’s dirty. It’s full of snookies. It’s the armpit of America. I’ve heard it all.
I question, however, if any of the people so disgusted with the state have actually visited, and not simply driven through en route to New York City or beyond.  Of course when your only exposure is driving up and down the Turnpike you’re not going to associate your experience with something positive. I get that, and admit that the views on the Turnpike, especially as you get towards Elizabeth, are not becoming.
But as someone who grew up in New Jersey,  I wholeheartedly differ from them in their negative declarations, as I find the state to be incredibly diverse and beautiful, featuring bucolic hillsides and mountains, vast farmlands yielding a plethora of sumptuous fruits and vegetables year after year  (it’s called the Garden State for this reason, not the Zach Braff movie), burgeoning urban life and of course, mild, yet content suburban communities.
And perhaps the most divisive feature of New Jersey over the past few years is the Jersey Shore. Most of this planet’s only exposure to the area was a short-lived phenomenon of a reality show revolving around self-centered “guidos and guidettes” in a small but raucous, summer beach town.
That representation, I assure you, is not accurate for even a fraction of the Jersey Coastline. Missing are the quant towns, chock full of small businesses, genuinely kindhearted people, and awe-inspiring views of the vast, deep blue Atlantic Ocean. That’s the Jersey Shore I remember, the refreshing sight for sore eyes on sweltering Summer days. And that’s the land I visited for the first time in 3 years this past weekend, soaking up and capturing each memorable moment with my good friends I grew up with.
Watch this week’s vlog and catch a glimpse of just a few of New Jersey’s comely features, including the light sand beaches, contrasting foliage, small-town feel, pork roll egg and cheeses (LEGENDARY), and more.
vimeo
Hope you enjoyed this weekend’s vlog. I’ve got plenty more over on Vimeo for you to check out if you haven’t, including trips to Southern California, Washington, D.C. and more.

NEW Vlog: Timelapsing Around Philadelphia
vimeo
Timelapses. So. Many. Timelapses.
That’s probably the best way to summarize the story of this weekend’s vlog. Streets, alleys, parks, the skyline - I timelapsed it all as I wandered around Philadelphia. Sure, I might’ve gotten overly excited with them, but this was my first weekend with an actual tripod (Joby Magnetic Gorillapod - it’s great), so it shouldn’t be much of a surprise. You don’t quite understand the value of steady shots vs shaky ones until you have tangible, visible evidence to compare.
Personally, for these montage/vlogs, I find a mix of both steady and shaky shots to be important. The steady ones allow for me to add beautiful scenes of what I see and hear, while the shaky ones allow for a true, POV experience, ideally allowing the viewer to connect  with what’s going on. At least that’s what I see in it.
If you haven’t watched the vlog yet, I’d highly recommend you take just 2 minutes to check it out. At the :48 second mark, you can see a kid jump over the fence and into the dog park, leave the frame, then return a second later chased by two dogs, leading him to climb/fall over the fence, and finally falling one more time while I tries to run away from the park. It’s pretty hilarious.
You can check out my other vlogs on my Vimeo page. I do them every weekend, so check back each Monday for a new one!

Video and Blogging: A Convergence
My last two posts have centered around video and writing, separately. Now, it's time to marry them.
Scroll down this page just a few stories and you'd discover that I happen to host two web shows centering around Mobile Security and Cyber security. The shows, Mobility Minute and The InfoSecond, are initiatives I've created at work that combine both video and blogging in an effort to present stories on pertinent topics in the industries in an educational, informative, and entertaining way.
youtube
Mobility Minute

The InfoSecond
The combination of video and blogging is a way of helping us differentiate from the majority of competing content the audience has the option of consuming, and it's an approach I fully expect to be become increasingly commonplace on most blogs in the coming years.
The way I see it, all organization's are transforming into their own media companies, particularly in how they get their message out and create content. When social media popped up, companies in all sectors hopped on board, creating and contributing content on any platform that they could. They simply went to where the customers/consumers are.
Now as consumers turn to more visual based social platforms (Snapchat, Periscope/Meerkat) and existing social networking stalwarts introduce new video features (Facebook Video competing with YouTube, Twitter Video, Facebook's Live Video broadcasting), and streaming becomes faster/cheaper, I believe we're in for another seismic shift in content creation.
Personally, I'm excited. Are you?
Be sure to subscribe to IBM Security’s YouTube channel and catch each new episode as they premiere. I’ll also be sharing the episodes on here weekly, but you should still subscribe to the channel. Or not. I can’t make you do anything.

Mobile Challenges and the Articles to Help You Solve Them
Tumblr media
Outside of my adventures in video and vlogging, I continue to write each day, including 3 pages every morning at the bare minimum. On the professional blogging side, I still manage to contribute weekly and have had three articles published recently.
The articles all revolve around mobile, and delve into various topics including the productivity and security impact of Fantasy Football, securing smartphones and tablets in retail settings, and how the most regulated industries can embrace mobility.  Each article takes a unique look at the challenges posed by mobile in the enterprise and defines solutions that can be implemented immediately.
Even if you don’t believe these topics impact you in the now, chances are they will eventually, especially as our lives become more ingrained with mobile technology. Check out the three articles below!
Scoring Points with Mobility Management and Fantasy Football
Did you know 75 million users play Fantasy Football? Did you also know that these 75M users will contribute to a total loss of productivity to the tune of 14B this year alone?
RAMPing Up Mobility in the Most Secure Enterprises
Regardless of the myriad of regulations or compliance checks an organization faces, their is still an opportunity for them to securely and successfully enact mobile strategies.
Shopping for Secure Mobility in Retail
Retailers are embracing mobility in their business practices in order to better cater to customers - but they must now solve the resulting security issues.

Blogging? How about some Vlogging?
vimeo
It’s been quite a while since I’ve last published a blog post on here - but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been busy creating content. Aside from the articles, blog posts and videos I’ve been producing at work (more on that in tomorrow’s update), I’ve been experimenting with video blogging, or vlogging.
As you can tell from my video above, unlike talking head pieces with rants on current events or updates on my personal life, I’ve decided to try out a different approach.
Each vlog that I’ve produced has been a snapshot of what I see, hear, and experience over a weekend. It’s the story of 72 hours condensed into under 2 minutes. In just 8 weeks of vlogging, I’ve already been so fortunate to have captured some incredible moments, including waves crashing onto a California beach, construction and beautification of the U.S. Capitol, and even Pope fever in Philadelphia!
vimeo
So far, each of the vlogs i’ve produced has been filmed on an iPhone 5 (except my most recent one which was on my new iPhone 6s) and edited in iMovie. There are simpler, and more ideal programs to edit videos on, but, as a novice, I’m working with what I’ve got - and thoroughly enjoying it!
My vlogging experiment has been an enriching one, as it provides me with a creative outlet on a new medium. I look forward to it’s continued evolution, especially as I pursue introducing more conversational aspects to it, timelapses, and whatever else I’m able to learn as I go.
As technology advances (primarily mobile), our ability to consume high quality video content becomes easier and easier. I don’t foresee vlogging overtaking blogging per se, but I do see a future in which both elements are incorporated into each other on nearly all blogs. These are exciting times, and I can’t wait to see how individuals and brands alike embrace video!
To see more of my weekend vlogs, be sure to check out my Vimeo page. I’ll be sharing each of my new videos, so don’t forget to stop by at the start of each week!

The Grand Re-Mobilening
Tumblr media
We can rebuild it. We have the technology. We have the capabilities to make the world’s first one minute mobile security show. Mobility Minute will be that show. Better than it was before. Better. Stronger. Faster.
For the millions* (*hundreds) of viewers of the Mobility Minute, you might’ve noticed quite a difference in the format this week. In an effort to differentiate from The InfoSecond show, and genuinely live up to it’s name, we’ve decided to explore the idea of actually presenting the series’ episodes in just one minute. One take, 60 seconds, 4 stories on mobile.
This new approach is certainly challenging and may seem a bit audacious, but we believe we can rise to the occasion and tell the story of our top mobile news from the week within the time frame through the video medium.
With an immeasurable stream of content competing for attention today, we’ve opted to leverage the road relatively less traveled (video) in an attempt to inform, educate, and occasionally entertain viewers on the subject of mobile security and mobility in a short burst. There are others doing similar recap videos in this space, but this is the first one attempting to highlight key mobile stories in a one minute span.
Watch the video below and let us know what you think. It’s fun to recognize opportunities to improve and we’ve already spotted several ways we’ll be tweaking the series moving forward, but we’d absolutely love outsider input on how to create a better series.
And before you ask, yes, I requested that we re-shoot the intro for the show as a shot-for-shot remake of the 6 Million Dollar Man. It was denied.

Feature Presentation: The InfoSecond
Tumblr media
Oh hey there. How’s your summer going? Do anything cool so far?
Me? Why yes, I have done something cool. I’ve help create and launch an all-new weekly video and web series for IBM!
The new series, The InfoSecond, is aimed at bringing the week’s top stories around security - information security, mobile, cyber-attacks, etc - to our targeted audience in a clear, quickly digestible way.
You can learn more about the show is and what to expect by clicking anywhere in this sentence. Seriously, anywhere.
Recognizing that audiences prefer to consume via different mediums, we’ve created three options to keep up to date with the latest stories: a blog post, video, and coming soon, a podcast.
Creating a series like this is no simple feat and requires a lot of trust and collaboration. I’m incredibly fortunate to have many great individuals to work with to help build this out and ensure it’s successful.
Like any first episode, there are plenty of kinks to work out and improve upon. This show will evolve over time and we’re excited to institute some new ideas already to enhance the experience.
Even if you don’t know much about cybersecurity, I genuinely think you’ll find it rather informative and a bit entertaining (tiny bit?). If you have 3 minutes free, I urge you to check out the episode and let me know what you think. If you don’t have three minutes free, FIND IT! Or not. It’s your choice, really.

it’s a perfect world
Tumblr media
Two years ago, I set out to capture what started out as a tumultuous year, one second each day. Using my handy iPhone 5, I ventured out every 24 hours to find something unique to do and film. It was a tremendous opportunity for me to reflect on the things I was grateful for and learn from new experiences, something I previously wrote at length about in this post i put together on Medium.
Overall, the project helped me open myself up and value each day. You can watch the video from last year here.
At the conclusion of the 365 days, I wasn’t sure if the project would finish with that year or continue. Well, it continued - and for that, I’m happy.
Last week I completed my second ‘One Second Every Day For A Year’ video. This video captured the highs and the lows; the exciting and the mundane; the old and the new.
In it, you can take a visual journey with me through 7 countries, countless new friends and experiences, and of course, shenanigans. Hope you enjoy!

Now Launching: The Mobility Minute
Today is an exciting day. After months of pitching, approvals and testing, The Mobility Minute, a weekly web series I've created for work, has finally launched!
youtube
The show, which revolves around sharing pertinent mobility and mobile security news for the industry, will be released every Monday with the intent of informing, educating and (hopefully) entertaining our audience.
In an attempt to differentiate from other shows in the space, we're trying/attempting to inject a bit of humor into the storytelling to make it a bit more easily digestible and interesting for viewers.
There are still lots of kinks to work out in the show, and I recognize that it will naturally evolve over time, but considering this was my first time ever in front of the teleprompter, I'm quite proud with what we were able to cobble together.
It's always exciting to work hard towards an opportunity that allows you to get creative, especially when it involves a new medium (video). Considering the dramatic leaps and bounds in terms of performance our smartphones have achieved, mobile video has been able to flourish in recent times and represents a growing opportunity for any person or organization interested in creating around it. Barriers have been lowered and stories can be created in an instant. It's certainly a challenge to stand out, but consistent, quality content will rise to the top. You just can't be discouraged with your video not going viral the instant it's released. Patience is key.
I'm wildly excited to watch The Mobility Minute evolve and progress over time and will continuously explore new ways to get creative with storytelling via the video medium. For those of you who are interested in seeing how the web series grows over time, be sure to follow me on Twitter: @kevinolivieri or check the Security Intelligence website every Monday for the latest webisodes!
Before I go, I'm curious to know if there are any web series that you watch on a daily/weekly basis. Why do you watch them? What is it that keeps you interested/coming back?

Exciting Things to Come and Stuff You Might’ve Missed
Tumblr media
Although I can’t say anything yet, I have a very exciting announcement coming next Monday (May 11th). It’s something I’ve been working diligently on for a while now at work and the fruits of that labor will be revealed shortly. I assure you, it will be glorious. Or it won’t. We’ll see.
In the meantime, be sure to check out some of the more recent articles I’ve written on Mobile and March Madness, Smartwatches in the Enterprise, and Mobile Malware Threats in the Health care Industry.

App Security, Mobilizing Workers, and some Unfinished Business
Tumblr media
Curious to learn about the latest developments revolving around mobile application security? Or how organizations can securely leverage mobility for temporary workers? Well, fantastic news: two of my articles on these captivating subjects have been published this week on IBM's Security Intelligence site!
2 Articles, 1 Week
Two weeks ago, I was fortunate enough to the pick the brains of two of IBM's top app security experts for an interview on the state of mobile apps, which I fashioned into a doozy of an article, if I may say so myself (I can't? Well, it's my blog so I'm doing it anyway).
Additionally this week, I tackled the issue of granting mobility to temp workers in another article that went live on Tuesday, addressing the security risks and providing steps organizations can take to get their contingent workforce the secure mobile access they need to be productive outside of the office.
They're both pretty easy reads, so if you have even the slightest inkling of interest in the topics, check 'em out.
Is that who I think it is?
If you've somehow been away from the internet this week, you may be wondering why that guy in the stock photo at the beginning of this blog post looks an awful lot like Vince Vaughn. Don't worry, you're not going crazy - it is in fact Vince Vaughn, and it's all part of a clever little marketing campaign behind the upcoming movie 'Unfinished Business'. By simply superimposing the heads of it's main cast (Vaughn, Tom Wilkinson and Dave Franco) into stock images and making them freely available, the movie has gotten what I perceive to be a significant boost in awareness, press, and word-of-mouth.
It's a cool, low-touch idea that's clearly targeted towards the LinkedIn crowd, a social network that movies tend to avoid vs Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, etc. Come to think about it, this might be only the 3rd campaign I can remember seeing make an impact on LinkedIn (Wolf of Wall Street and Nightcrawler were the other two).
I know personally I've already seen countless individuals using the images on LinkedIn and in blog posts, did you?
Have you seen these images used by any companies? Got any good examples to share?
