New Honda Accord Sport Hybrid. I nicknamed her Tohru. As in Tohru Honda of Fruits Basket. Got a keychain of her for my new car as well. I’m an anime otaku, duh.

Thanks to some Twitter discussion tonight it made me think more deeply about Winter Schnee, the eldest of the Schnee children, daughter of Willow & Jacques. We know from her backstory that she abandoned the Schnee family hierarchy, abandoning her claim as Schnee Company Heiress, which then fell to her younger sister Weiss, one of the 4 chief protagonists of the web series RWBY. From a character design standpoint, I've always thought Winter's Eyebrows are something she paints black with thick mascara as part of her military grooming practices, e.g. are not naturally black. But I never stopped to think WHY until tonight.....then it HIT me....she wears her black mascara because consciously or even unconsciously she's trying to emulate her surrogate father figure, her commanding officer, General James Ironwood, and his naturally black eyebrows and facial hair. His head of hair betrays some grey, salt and pepper on the sides, but it was once solid black. He probably dyes his beard and eyebrows so they remain solid black leaving only the sides of his head with a bit of grey showing. In Winter's complete rejection of Jacques, she altered her appearance to be more like the new father figure she replaced him with, James Ironwood. This is probably an uncomfortable truth that would come up if Winter ever had time to go to therapy, but alas, with a war to stop the End of the World on, that's sadly unlikely. But if Winter did take a moment to reflect on it, I think in that case it would mean if we see Winter again in RWBY Volume 10, we might see her revert back to her natural white eyebrow color, like her sister Weiss and the rest of her family. Or maybe, even if she does recognize what she's doing and why, she'll ultimately decide to keep them black as the new head of what remains of the Atlas Military chain of command in exile. She was Ironwood's right hand, after all. Atlesians are going to have a hell of a time with their Vergangenheitsbewältigung nach der Untergang (Wrestling with the past after the Fall of Atlas), especially those who made it to refuge & exile in Vacuo....but also the remaining outpost of Atlesian culture and technology, aka Argus Base. Hopefully Caroline Cordovan will read the writing on the wall and throw her support behind Winter and not try to become a rival in a power struggle for who leads the legitimate Atlas government after Ironwood. Though given her proclivities, she just might.

The pictures don't do it justice, and last year's Fall colors in PDX were even more impressive, but Autumn in Oregon is really, really beautiful, sometimes breathtakingly so. You can even appreciate it when your plane is on final approach into PDX, descending.

Images from this years Kumoricon 2023! Portland is such a fun city, and my good friends Deb & Brian drove down from Seattle to hang out for the weekend. I got to meet voice actors Dani Chambers and J. Michael Tatum (he's really TALL by the way!). Happy to see RWBY cosplay still out there in the wild (Ruby Rose, Blake Belladonna) as well as Old and New Vash the Stampede. Even some Barbie cosplay! I flew out on Thursday to PDX (after several delays and a VERY bumpy ride until we passed the Rockies), at lunch at PDX in the same bar & grill at PDX (Hopworks) with the same bartender, whom I greeted. I then went straight to the Oregon State Convention Center after a quick ride on the Red MAX Line Train (light rail). It was late enough in the day that I was able to check into my hotel room at the Hyatt Regency without delay. I dropped off my things and promptly got on TriMet Bus #77 to the local Safeway grocery store, and came back with 2 six packs of PNW craft brew in tow and some distilled water for my CPAP. I got snacky late at night and had a Tuna Poke Bowl at the hotel bar in the Lobby, then I went back upstairs and binged Blue Eye Samurai on Netflix on my iPad until like 4am, then snoozed for a few hours before getting up for the breakfast buffet to start my day at the con. Unfortunately the viewing room had technical issues so some of the anime content I wanted to watch I couldn't at the scheduled times, which was annoying. I got to meet Dani Chambers and had her autograph a character print of a Chibi version of Chise from Ancient Magus Bride, then had a California chicken sandwich at Red Robin and then met my friends at the hotel. They had to go to pick up their badges so I got in line for the AMV Contest screening. It took my friends 2.5 HOURS to clear registration, which was a nightmare. Deb ended up catching only the final category, so we made time to watch the encore AMV Contest screening Sunday morning. They went back to Seattle on Sunday after lunch but I attended the AMV Contest Winners reveal screening which was also fun. We did at least watch the AMV Aftershow on Saturday before grabbing dinner at the hotel restaurant. We watched Kaze-san and Morning Glories (English Dub) in the viewing room Friday evening then went out separate ways. Saturday we did shopping in the Dealer's Room/Artist Alley, then took the Blue MAX Line train over into the West bank side of Portland. We had a sushi lunch then appetizers at Deschutes Brewery (a Portland institution!) then rode the streetcar back to catch the Red MAX Line train back to the hotel. We attended a panel called Laugh Out Loud AMVs that was actually more like a game show and not very good. We did get a few laughs at the end but we kinda wish the whole panel had been that way. We got some to-go dinners from Burgertime and unfortunately Deb & Brian were pooped out and retired to their room while I attended the AMV Classics panel which was GREAT. All in all, it was a great trip and I still love Kumoricon (my 2nd time, back to back) and I really like Portland, Oregon. It's probably one of my favorite out of state cons now. I even worked up the courage to Cosplay as Lum's Dad from Urusei Yatsura. Not the best, I know, but best I could throw together as an amateur on my budget. I did that Friday when the weather was best.

Images from this year’s Oni-Con XX in Galveston, Texas. Sorry for the dearth of images this year, as I had to cut my time short at Oni-Con this year (again). Too close in proximity to Kumoricon next weekend to give it the full con experience. It was my intention to, but my Mom whom I live with and care for raised a big stink about it and just wanted me to skip altogether. We argued about it and I said if I cancel my hotels I'm still driving down there each day, despite how exhausting that is. We finally compromised on my just spending Friday night in Galveston then staying as long as I wanted to on Saturday. I even managed to snag a parking spot in the Galveston Island Convention Center this time (which used to be well nigh impossible in years past) and this year I stayed at the Hilton Resort Hotel right next to the convention center. The weather was crappy this weekend in Galveston, as it often is for Oni-Con, but this definitely dampened my mood. It started raining when I turned off Broadway onto 45th street on Friday and didn't let up at all until late Friday night. I did some last minute Christmas shopping in artists' alley for my cousins (once removed, the closest thing I have to nieces and nephews as an only child), and in the dealer's room. The dealer's room was pretty sparse on Friday but more robust today (Saturday). I enjoyed the AMV showcases presented; no where near as well attended as the OG AMV Contest back in the day, but glad at least SOME kind of AMV content has returned to Oni-Con. It was like Anime Toronto did this past Labor Day weekend. Curated presentations of favorite AMVs throughout the years, no specific categories or competition, just a random sample of curated favorites. The only categories as such were "Old School Anime" and "New AMVs"...the Old School ones ran Friday night around 9pm, and the "New AMVs" segment was today at 12:30pm. So Oni-Con XX a mixed bag for specifically me. Parts were enjoyable but it also engendered a lot of melancholy. Bittersweet.

Attended the English Dub screening of The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes (Japanese: 夏へのトンネル、さよならの出口) last night courtesy of HIDIVE. 2nd watch in my native language was an entirely different experience than seeing the Japanese sub version at Otakon 2023 this summer (premiere). From the voice performances to the ADR script choices, this 2nd watch I actually believed their growing relationship...I got a better sense of her falling for him, and his developing fondness just spending so much time with her all the time, investigating the nature of the Tunnel. When I saw the subtitled version her falling in love seemed under-developed...but rewatching in English helped to sell me on it; I believed it this time. It's a happy ending if we hand-wave past the reality of a woman in her early 30s reuniting with her long lost High School love who is still a teenager...something something time dilation, transcendent love, yada yada. Same vibe as RaXephon...in the RaXephon movie Haruka even bears him a child. The female lead is an aspiring Manga artist who is disowned by her parents for wanting to pursue that dream because her grandfather was also a manga author who never found commercial success despite his artistic merit. The male protagonist encourages her not to give up. He also proceeds into the magical Tunnel to reunite with his long dead sister. If their dead parakeet could come back from the spirit world then maybe? But alas the Tunnel does not seem to allow that....and his sister's ghost tells him she wants him to go fall madly in love with a girl in the real world. He's finally able to make peace with his sister's death and leaves the spirit realm to rejoin his long lost love, who in the meantime has become a successful magaka but is hitting writer's block just before his return from the great beyond. Both of them are alienated from their parents. Kaoru's parents divorced in the wake of his sister's death and his abusive father fell into alcoholism. Anzu's parents, as mentioned, disowned her and now she lives in her uncle's condo while he is away. The main cast are largely newcomers to HIDIVE productions; I did recognize Shelly Calene Black as the voice of their homeroom teacher, but that's about it as veteran VAs go that I could pick up on. Shannon Emerick voices adult Anzu's assistant but in the theater I though it was Meg MacDonald. Had to check later and I was wrong. The show is beautifully animated and it was nice to see it on the big screen a second time.

I'm really really enjoying the One Piece (Netflix) live action. I like it better than the actual anime. 5 episodes of One Piece anime: Meh. 5 episodes of THIS? It hits me in the feels & I'm crying manly tears. The flashbacks & backstory add depth and make me care that much more about our protagonists. It also condenses the story and launches straight into the main plot without much delay. Luffy's goofy powers in live action make this feel like a Comic book Superhero movie, like it actually WORKS. The acting, the script, all of it...best live action #anime adaptation I've ever seen.

Watching Iria: Zeiram the Animation (イ・リ・ア ゼイラム ジ アニメーション, I.R.I.A. Zeiramu Ji Animēshon), stylized as I・Я・I・A ZЁIЯAM THE ANIMATION....these scenes are from the 2nd episode, Visage. *****Spoiler Alert***** . . . . . . . While played for comedy as a fanservice moment, this initially accidental but ultimately intentional grope by Kei of Iria is sapphic...because Kei is actually a girl; something not revealed until a few episodes later. Kei is definitely a tomboy, so her being a budding lesbian isn't particularly shocking. Iria is naturally irritated by the non-consensual grope regardless of Kei's gender, plus the age difference with Kei on the just on the verge of puberty with all the emotional and physical development that entails. Iria is still perceiving Kei as a precocious little boy and Kei hasn't corrected her misperception as yet. It is Fujikuro (フジクロ, Fujikuro) who later susses out that Kei is a girl, by her smell, he claims (ewww). This revelation made me remember this scene and how it changes some things with the new context. I definitely don't "ship" these two, but they do rather develop into a Senpai - Kohai relationship, with Iria mentoring Kei in the ways of becoming a professional (bounty) hunter.

Oni-Con in Galveston, Texas is my favorite local anime convention. I've been going for years and years. This year will be Oni-Con XX (20th anniversary). I drive down and get a hotel on Seawall Blvd near the Galveston Island Convention Center. It's an easy & fun weekend getway, usually Halloween or Veterans Day.
